The next Pop os is completely different by the way and they are developing a store for their own (Pop OS is just a modded elementary OS store it will be dropped with Gnome in the next Cosmic version).
I guess they don't want a repeat of the linux gaming challenge form LTT so they are just directing you to the flatpak instead of bundling the deb package from valve or canonical's snap
Pop OS is probably more battery efficient than CachyOS. I don't know if the GPU switcher works at all in Arch based systems. I tried to set up GPU switcher in EndeavourOS and it didn't work out.
Great video, I definitely learned something there. I run fedora silverblue (bluefin to be precise), everything flatpak on Gnome. So our preferences differ A LOT. Okay, that out of the way... It's bad that PopOS didn't install the right package format. That can be a real problem, there are applications that you just can't use as flatpaks. You choose, not the distro. The performance difference is quite interesting to see, I wonder how much I leave on the table by running some prebuild fedora thing instead of an optimized kernel. Maybe I'll try a spin with some custom kernel just to see if it offers any real benefits. Maybe that is more relevant on real gaming systems with high-end graphic cards. I did so in the past but had REALLY bad experiences with the zen kernel on two distinct systems, so I went back to the vanilla kernel to hopefully not run into stupid problems.
I think it's not the right period for testing and challenging Pop_OS! That system is moving away from Gnome, and, as you might know, its new Cosmic desktop environment will be based on iceWM. So, maybe the performance will improve as iceWM is supposed to be lightweight to compare to Gnome. I think you should have used either the cachyos or the tkg kernel in both operating systems to compare the performance (using the same components/drivers). That said, maybe you should give a retry with the same kernel.
After using it last week it feels like it is in legacy mode, just waiting for the Cosmic refresh... hopefully that will help things as i found it nice but sluggish for general use and gaming (and i wasn't chasing fps numbers either). 🙂
I think it is the perfect period to test actually: when I will revisit the Pop!_OS, it will be after the release of their new DE. We will be able to compare then with this base. Concerning the performance, I did install TkG on Pop!_OS ruclips.net/video/3XmFk_0k2vg/видео.htmlsi=juWEstV2R96F9J_H&t=700 and then compared it to CachyOS kernel (which is the equivalent of the TkG one). It might not be clear but the CachyOS Kernel is pretty similar to the TkG FYI.
@@A1RM4X you're perfectly right. I wasn't thinking about a comparison before/after Pop_OS upgrade with its DE refresh. That's the best way to compare it for performance improvements or loss ! For comparison with CachyOS, I didn't know that cachyos kernel optimisations are the same or similar to TKG and in fact comparable.
Great video! Random question: I want to switch to Linux, and I'm considering CachyOS, but for several reasons, I need to use Dropbox and they don't have an official version for Arch, but they do for Ubuntu/Debian. I know there's a way to build from source on Arch. Do you know how reliable, and stable it is on Arch?
Thanks for the comment on the video! The beauty of Arch is its documentation called Arch Wiki. When you have a question towards Arch, there is a high chance the answer will be on the Arch Wiki. In your case wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dropbox Enjoy!
You complained about Pop Os when it comes to multi-monitors but you didn't even use pop os window stacking feature together with shortcuts, which greatly improve productivity especially when you using multiple apps at the same time. I use 5+ in multi-monitors doing web development and it is amazing Pop Os is superior to linux mint is on another level. I used to use mint before and would not go back. The only flaw Pop OS might now is that they skipped a version and now working on cosmic so they have not pay much attention to the main distro.
POP OS i use on my laptop as i use free wifi in Library to set it up. It is basically Ubuntu on a system 76 (A computer and laptop builder) version. My PC has Linux Mint as daily driver. It is listed in BIOS as Ubuntu. It just has more pre installed software and a Windows screen and you can put shortcuts on screen. So its good for a laptop on the moue for searching web and games and stuff. But the PC i want something beefy. But both are simple to setup and easy to run and don't make problems like some more modern OS that i have tried.
There is no concrete answer for this. Between all the gaming related distros, you will see 2 or 5 or 10 fps difference. I personally use Pop!_OS and gaming performance is great.
@@Sunrise-d819i2 I don't like using a DE that was not primary intended for the operating system. I am waiting for Cosmic to become the default on PopOS. I like the comfortable design and also, using flatpak as default is a big win for me. I don' want to be dependent on what packages the distro devs decide to repackage from three levels upstream
Salut. 😁
I would say Nobara is the real "gaming distro" for people who use Linux. For someone switching from Windows, Garuda is what distro they need, even though its Arch based. It comes with all the tweaks, the kernel and applications they don't know about on Linux that they will inevitably need. Those complaining its bloated (its not, it uses 2-3gb ram with minimal processes) can spend literally 10 minutes uninstalling packages they don't want.
I tried Garuda a few years ago, and the OS stability fell apart like a tower of Jenga blocks just by running updates after a clean install. No way would I go back to it after that. I used Pop OS at the time and while it wasn't perfect, it worked properly except for the Realtek sound drivers. Now deciding between either Nobara or MX Linux to try out Linux again.
I've never tried Pop_OS. I ave always read that it wasn't better than Ubuntu or Mint for performance, and Arch-based distros are more performant. I use Arch beacause it is rolling-release. I'm interested to see how Pop_OS will be considered when it's released with its new Cosmic desktop, and how it performs. It might become a serious DE challenger for KDE Plasma, Gnome, Xfce, Pantheon.

I'm no, expert but me steam appears to be installed just fine? Am I missing something here?
Mine did too.
On Cachy OS did you do the same test with TKG kernel ?
CachyOS default kernel is the same as the TkG Kernel I compile on my own.

I don't get it, if people don't like gnome that much they could just switch to xfce or kda
why is it an issue ?

So you would still recommend Mint for windows users? Over Pop!_OS?

Can it run league of legends?
