Oh I love this! I'm taking a drawing class and my 82 year old teacher warned us about using our fingers to blend charcoal......but I just can't help myself after watching Mad Charcoal! Thank you for your videos!
@@timl8258 It's a good question! Blending with your fingers is fine. The reason, if any, to avoid it is because our skin can be moist (grease, sweat, etc). So just be aware of that. Rules (or guidance from teachers) are there to understand and then to break when you understand them.
@@Hornet_Labs I'm glad you.reminded me of what josh says why not, I was trying to remember the other day, of course he does sometimes but the results are brilliant. I use thin gloves, as the mess on my hands is hard to remove, but you lose something in the technique as regards contact with the piece you're working on I feel.
Hi Fellow Watchers, Awesome isn't it.. 😲😳 I Find it Alright to Use Your Fingers, As Long As Ü Have Washed First.. Right..!! Hope You All Are Enjoying This As Much As I Am.. .. 🇨🇦
You did a wonderful job!! You’re right, definitely an oil painting (lol). The live demonstrations are good. It is always awesome to hear the break down while the art piece is being created. The best part is that you do not waste the time from creating your artwork by taking. A lot of other artists I watch spend too much time explaining something and not enough time showing it…
A beautiful charcoal drawing, so inspiring and expressive. I love using charcoal because there’s a certain freedom it gives you. Thank you Mad Charcoal. Bryony Jordan
This is great! Whenever you do something that surprises me, I think , "Oh no! He has just made a mess of that!" and am always amazed how you pull the art right out of the mess!
Thank you. I find the way you work and method brilliant. Until I chanced upon your content I'd not thought of working with charcoal, as the way we were taught to use it in school was not inspirational. Having taken up my interest in art again after a few years not doing much I have now started working in mediums I'd never tried before.....including charcoal. I always look forward to seeing the notification of a new video from you pop up on my phone.
I love your sense of freedom in your drawing process and style. It's something I hope to emulate in some capacity. I've been doing a lot of figure drawings lately and seeing your approach to it gives me some ideas about how I could loosen up a little with my approach.
You're great, I'm. Loving your videos and actually kind of know what you're talking about. I'm just a beginner but definitely helped me get moving from. Where I was. Thank you
I just discovered you channel and really enjoy your approach and artwork. Quite inspirational. I'm going back to figurative work and this is a great way to experiment and capture almost an ephemeral quality in the human form.
I had dislike toned tan paper. I played with it today and realized the infinite possible techniques of using it. I had dislike D.R.Graves method/technique in his book until I played with the possibilities using him as a starting point(foundation). Nice he did charcoal on gray paper in another book , but I don't do it his way
I am just beginning in using charcoal and graphite, so I do appreciate the tips that you give about your specific style. I am curious if you incorporate other materials to your charcoal pieces, like paint or collage? Do you keep a sketchbook?
great as usual very fast @ about 4:41 you had a finished "painting" wonderful markings, one thing in future videos will you show the model/reference side by side as you work? Thanks so much for posting and informative insightful instruction.
Im in love with all your work, specially women’s portraits, cause you always get that feeling of movement and freedom, and you force the viewer to complete the image you created by leaving hints of whats left to see but… isnt this drawing extremely flat? The towel or bedsheets are cool and have personality but the body doesn’t have any volume at all. I feel like what you draw this time and what you said are in opposite directions: getting the values correct and embracing the different shadows and lights in the image.
how do you find your reference photos? i'm struggling to find any good figure photography on pinterest that evokes the same emotion as the one you used here! really great piece by the way
I get stuck on tiny areas of my drawings for long periods of time, then, when I look at the whole thing, I see the proportions are wrong after all that work. I am going to use your value tips going forward.

Why aren't you supposed to use your fingers for that?

Every time I try to make something it just ends up a blob
Un bien bel ouvrage.
Arrasou!!
The back is not like this. There’s more forms, it’s not just a round surface.
Didn’t know there was only 1 back. My apologies
