  • A bit more of an in depth look to how I go about this specific style and technique. Here are the materials I use for this drawing:
    Generals Compressed Charcoal
    Pan Pastel
    Kneaded Eraser
    Mono Zero Eraser
    Blending Stump
    Paper Towel

8:25 you can tell how skilled he is, by simply seeing how much he is able to demonstrate. Drawing takes more of an internal feeling to get right. Most don't even know what they are doing. Yet he is able to illustrate how he is thinking, and that is a very powerful skill.

Youre doing a great job of converting your thought process into words. It's not an easy thing to do especially while you are drawing/painting at the same time.

I like how you talk about those principles (values + proportion, build those first then refine), instead of simply saying here's step 1 and then step 2. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I'm an older senior. I've done some sculpture and some writing but never any painting, drawing, or charcoal. One afternoon, not long ago, I was watching a young woman in the park encouraging something out of a piece of paper with a chunk of charcoal. I watched and watched this cloud of gray, black and white....chaos, chaos, chaos and all of a sudden... a beautiful face.So far....pretty terrible. I wont quit though...even though you and that young lady make it look unobtainablely simple. Wonderful work. I'll keep watching, listening, and trying to learn. thank you.

One way to explain about the shadow detail is, You want to have a refined focal point so your drawing or painting reads like the natural human gaze. The viewer can only focus on one area for detail. That is natural observation. So you are trying to mimic the natural way the human eyes see. That is why you create a focal point in your work. The lost information gives them something to mentally engage with. Great job! Love your channel.
