Remember when the gisant selling point for "cable TV" was "no advertising"?
we were so innocent then
Yep, not so gisant anymore.
I called it.
Same thing happened with satellite radio and satellite television.
The problem is the lousy commercials today, they lack creativity, lack variety, and lack memorable experience.
I can watch compilations of classic commercials on RUclips. These were well done, creative, often had good jingles, not boring, not vulgar.
Who can recall the Jingle to McDonalds Big Mac's back in the day? I can still sing it. Car commercials sold the car not the connected, social media hype of it. Kids commercials were so entertaining back then. No pharmaceutical commercials, oh and no social engineering narratives in these classic commercials, unlike all too many woke, bull💩 and boring commercials today.🤔
One can hope that with all this invasiveness in ads that people will turn things off and go out more.
And also hope people will remember there's more to going out than "touching grass."
Remember that old TV show, Max Headroom? In one episode, they were amazed that a person had a TV with an off switch.
The age of the blipvert is here. #network23
That originated in 1984. Winston & Julia were visiting a Party official pretending to be opposed to The Party and were shocked he could turn off the telescreen. Now the TVs listen to us, just like in Airstrip One.
Keep buying physical media, you can't fit the cloud in a faraday cage, but you can fit a Blu-ray player and telly, and you'll have more than fond memories of how things used to be if your services discontinue or lose your virtual library.
Ditto ! CD/DVDs are immune to EMP. The players are not. You can get a lot of Movies, TV shows, magazines, eBooks, on a tiny SD/Micro SD card or hard drive.
without drug commercials how you gonna know what drugs to tell you doctor that you need?
Am I the only one who finds it fascinating, how many of those drugs have side effects that include death?
😅
When have we had enough? That is the question.
It used to be that if you got something for free, then you were the product.
Now, we don't even get that much.
You must believe, you must accept the narrative, you are not allowed to dissent or avoid the dogma they wish to foist upon you... They are the moral busybodies C.S. Lewis mentioned.
We are always the product now.
@@MrTamshin Yeah. Even when we pay for it, we're still the ones getting sold up the river.
You are the wrapper.
I remember when the whole point of streaming vs cable was so we could opt out of ads. Most of the ads are cringe AF and everyone hates them. Media companies are garbage. A stupid ad interrupted this video!
I was shopping for a new Kindle the other day cause the one I've had for ages started having display problems. It was listed as $99 but when I went to select if I wanted it with or without ads on the screen and I selected "without", the price jumped $20. Ridiculous.
Don't forget that Amazon can limit access to the books you "own" and PAID FOR ! They can remove or edit them without you knowledge or consent ! You can download and burn to a CD that cannot be edited.
@@century2298 Never knew that. I did know that they would update a book if something changed but never heard of them deleting books.
That’s always been the case.
That would be ok as long as there's a guarantee they won't figure out a way to get around the not forcing ads on you part.
I've long been a Roku user, but I'm ready to yank my devices and throw them away and replace them with mini PCs running Linux.
You will own nothing.... And be happy....
Blu-Ray And Physical media for your favorite versions.
I collect for free as people downsize.
I purposely avoid gas stations with at the pump advertising.
You can turn those ads off with a push of one of the buttons. I do it all the time.
I see an ad on a gas pump, and it reminds me of what NOT to spend money on.. Thankfully I only have two vehicles that still run on gasoline, everything else runs on ethanol, both E85 and home made E100.
The worst by far are pharmaceutical ads marketed direct to consumers, despite having to legally say, "Talk to your doctor." No one is going into their doctor saying, "Yeah, I saw an ad for XXX, can you give me some of that?"
People have doctors?
People do it all the time. That's why the ads are there. People will tell the doctor they want Medicine X, whether they have what ever it is supposed to treat or not. When the doctor says that medicine isn't right for them, they will change doctors. "No one ever went broke underestimating the American consumer."
Those are exclusive to the United States. Still think we're the greatest?
It's more about name recognition and normalization. Your doctor suggests such and such drug and you're like, "Sure, that sounds good," because the drug name is in your subconscious, and people get used to the idea of poisoning themselves to get better.
Here's a bright idea: Why not turn off the TV, discontinue the streaming services, and go outside and touch some grass?
Or use a service that allows you to download and watch shows offline?
I haven't watched TV for years and I'm not subscribed to any streaming services. Going outside now to pull some weeds.
Which services allow that?
@@lifeonthehillsmith3668 Amazon Prime currently. I've only tried a few shows so far on an Android tablet. Download, turn off WiFi, then start watching. Not the same as on a 40+ inch TV but you can get your fix of "House" without ads.
@@lifeonthehillsmith3668 Evidently I can't post the name here (my previous reply disappeared) but most of the streaming services will allow downloads to handheld devices for off-line viewing. Not the same as your big screen TV but it can let you binge without ads.
@@quailstudios I literally can't recall the last time I watched a broadcast TV show, or a show on a streaming service (and the one time I recall watching a streamed show was visiting someone else's house)
No advertisement, in any form of media, has ever sold ME anything. But, they have made me certain to NOT buy those products. Fortunately, I live my life as simply as possible. So, to me, 99% of products out there are pure worthless kee-rap.
I am 100% w/ Scott on this one. I'm finding the ads getting more an more vile. Can't stand it and avoid it as much as possible.
In every way - too graphic, too politically correct, too loud and too much assuming the audience is dumb.
Advertising is the Devil's work.
Endless Agitation.

It never ceases to amaze me that even people for whom I have enormous respect (usually Baby Boomers) fail to grasp the central philosophical failure that has led to every one of these sickening developments: the triumph of renting over ownership. Literally every disgusting cultural development being allowed to go forward in our society owes its popularity and penetration to the normalization of paying money (which is itself rented) for time-limited access to experiences, or revocable licenses to content. Is it inconvenient by comparison to purchase optical media or use a video capture card to convert streams into files... of course it is, but that is the trade off, prioritize convenience over control, and you will eventually be controlled. Solution, reject the whole paradigm, from fiat currency to streaming services. Refuse to pay for revocable licenses.
Far worse "planned obsolesce". There could be an hours long program on that.
And don't forget that you don't own a piece of tech until you've broken the warranty.
Bill grabbed the hammer last night due to a windows update... Good to see ya zo!
I have a policy: I don't buy or run hardware or software that regards me as its adversary.
Makes a lot of things harder. ...but at least I don't have these types of problems.
Start a call campaign, start calling to complain to companies that put their ad's on there. Get enough people calling to drown their call centers.
I am happy with my 30 year old tv that I use for watching videos (VHS and DVD'S). I 'cut the cable' decades ago. I use my phone primarily for keeping up with current events and ocassional 'surfing'. I ignore commercials.
Same
When my TV broke I purposely bought a not smart TV.
I need to start a company that removes the ad chips. Their working on an setting that prevents muting the TV during ads.
The rich guy in the movie Contact who built the 2nd machine, that character made his millions off a device that muted TVs when ads came on...
Well when they force install those chips in our head we're going to have 23 hours of ads and 1 hour of content, and you'll be happy for it while you eat your bug and sawdust sandwich.
The good news is they won’t force you to take any chip or mark…. The reason why is because they want less people on the planet…. So they will let you go without it and die of starvation or lack of shelter and clothing…. You would need to make the decision weather or not to give up your sovereignty…
Most will…. Few won’t.
Addiction to the fruits, the world has to offer is what will make most people give in.
But yes… if you did take it… you don’t wanna miss a payment on your subscription… they will just turn you off.
Why would they spend the money installing chips in people's heads when the herd willingly watches ads, does everything they're told, and believes the lies?
Never spend money on something you get for free.
Books, people. (And yet, here I am…)
Samuel T. Cogley, Star Trek TOS "Court Marshall:" said it so well.
Good to see Zo is still alive
DELETE SERVICE & poke your fingers in their eyes.
Follow the $$$$$ kids. It drives the modern world up, above and beyond.
TV commercials are for moving around and doing housework. The only ads I actually look forward to are the Super Bowl ads, and at least they’ve started airing those in separate shows, after the fact, and those of us who don’t watch football can still watch the ads.
While pumping gas, when the ads start, press the buttons next to the screen. One of those buttons will silence the ad.
Considering that every ad is engineered to make you believe that if you just buy the product then you will be a happy person, regardless of the cost…. Commercial interruptions ARE from Satan.
Wait till they give you the alternative of paying extra to have no ads on your no ads subscription service. It's just like taking crowded traffic lanes and setting them aside for "high occupancy vehicles"; but letting you pay to use them anyway. So, basically, as with government/public service: "streaming services" seem to use the same definition of "service" that the farmer uses when he puts the bull to service the cows.
Five years ago Roku used to screen ads on RUclips.
Alternatively, people watch the Superbowl for the advertisements.
In the olden days, we called these videos NAGS...
You can't even get through this video with a prerequisite ad to next followed by one to skip. 😅
The Savanah Bananas aren't so bananas after all.
I quit tv when it went digital. I have an old one to watch vhs and dvd.
Cable offerings are often disgusting and violent and/or woke.
And I have hundreds of books. 👍
You're so right. The streaming services' top TV shows & movies are ALL ten or more years old. Nobody is watching the woke stuff.
What I like is when the show runs the ad, like in the olden days, when you watched Red Skelton, and he'd do an advertisement in the middle of the skit for Tide. That's T-I-D-E. Tide.
THAT is exactly what is happening now with RUclips ! Ad Blockers stop most of them, so the very producers of content are doing their own advertising in their content.
Even Rush Limbaugh was doing that in his last years.
Steve, give Mint Mobile or one of the other discount providers a look. $15 a month per phone sure sounds better than what you're dealing with.
Steve just can't let the Twinkies change go...
Roku used to be just a device. You paid for it, then used it. Later, Roku started offering its own streaming services. This probably costs money, so - ads!
PBS also had British comedy that was quite good.
Jesus FREAK ZO. Perfect subject line of him. And here we go......

Maybe people will go back to "non-electronic" entertainment... you know the kind that made a person smarter instead dumbed them down!! Read books, play card or board games & cultivate REAL relationships with REAL people. Novel idea...right! 🙄
Great to see Zo again.
Sorry guys Ive had a Roku for years now ans this is not how it works. I paid a one time fee for the device ($50). Ive never once had to pay any extra fees. I dont subscribe to channels, all my chosen Roku channels are free so I dont get upset over adds. Ads have always been part of the free channel service. They obviously were banking on people subscribing to channels for a portion of those fees. So this editorial on your part gentlemen feels unjustified.
Now Amazon Prime is a different story. I pay annual fee for that. And they have added content with adds even though this is a paid service. My subscription ends in September and so I’ll be cancelling it at the end of August. Ive also heard that Netflix for which I pay a monthly fee is rumored to be considering throwing ads on their content as well. If that becomes the case, because like Amazon I was paying for uninterrupted viewing of my desired entertainment I will also cut them loose in that event.
If eventually ads are forced on me everywhere I pay to not be bothered by ads, well if they wont honor their contracts I wont either. I’ll hoist my black flag and sail the internet seas of piracy.
Pay us more money and we'll reduce the ads. Pay us a lot more money and we'll remove the ads . . . for now.

This is the main reason I prefer torrents. I can put the files on any device and play them instantly without ads or menu/loading screens. I see enough ads on the Internet, when I want to watch a show or movie don't bug me.
Plex is the answer. Arrrrr!
Well, Bill finally made it to the moon?
Zoloft
Do they have "adblock plus", for roku?
Bill Whittle has changed his makeup.
My solution has always been... don't stream.
I personally thought it was genius in hope that this would replace the interruptions of the annoying ads.
Like hell. They never replace, always additions.
@@nickswildweather1308 I was optimistic. 😜
Ads on the moon are coming soon!
I bet plenty of money is spent on trying to devleop a projector that could do that.
Heh. No ads on this video. Did yall do that on purpose?
Here's my reaction. Instead of pausing, I will let the TV run while I take my little break, then rewind to where I left off. No pause required.

The constant barrage of advertising and how intrusive it has become is getting very old. The breaks in broadcast tv shows are becoming longer and more frequent while the actual tv content that we are trying to watch is becoming more frequently interrupted and of shorter net duration. Currently the amount of advertising per hour of live tv ranges from 14:32/hour to 17:49/hour, depending on the broadcasting network. Cable networks tend to run towards the higher end of this range, broadcast tv tends towards the lower end.
This particular annoyance may be relevant for me only, but driving around town in my truck has become somewhat like tv advertising since every intersection is now someone, homeless or not, begging for some of my money. And this is even worse when you are stuck at that stop light for 1 1/2 or 2 minutes. It is just another unwanted intrusion into my space and privacy, just like tv commercials.
The nearly never ending, and too regular, intrusion of advertising is why we rarely watch live tv anymore; and that includes sports events. I would rather start a hockey game one hour after face off so that I can watch via the DVR and fast forward thru the commercials. And everything else on tv gets the same treatment as well. Honestly, tv advertising does NOT influence my purchasing decisions in the least, and if anything they are all a waste of my time and patience.
Let me get this right? They are going to put adds on the paused screen??? Who cares!!! This is clearly click bait!!!
Don't like it vote with your dollars toss it in the trash if you don't like it!!!
Roku isn't the only game in town!!!
I have three different kinds I have Googles and I have Roku but I prefer onn wal-marts version and it's $20 about 1/2 of what Google and roku costs!!!!
Never used that stuff. I've never owned any kind of cellphone. Seems like I'm smarter than all of you guys
