- The BAFFLING Soft Image MYSTERY: Can YOU SOLVE It? A few weeks ago I purchased the older Fuji XF 23 1.4 R. I was pretty excited about it and started making some photos. One morning I found this great composition and waited for someone to walk through it, which eventually happened. I processed the image on my phone and zipped it out to Instagram. A few days later I loaded it into the computer and found it was not crisp at all.
This shocked me because it was made at 1/4500s at 1.4. So in this video I process this image in Lightroom Classic and Capture One 23 to see if I can fix it. Eventually I put it into Topaz AI Sharpen and all is good.

Great video Kirk. Never used their software. Interesting.
It could be that the lens is naturally softer at F1.4, or it could be that the image was focused either closer than the subject or slightly past infinity. One thing you can do is to right click in Lightroom and use the "Enhance Image" function before doing additional sharpening; it uses AI like the Topaz software, but in raw, and then you can sharpen additionally with Topaz for more natural detail.
The focus was right on the front of the building. And it’s pretty sharp at 1.4 definitely not as soft as it was. Thanks I’ll have to check out your processing tips.
Check out Christopher Frost his review Kirk. He also mentioned this issue. Focus is not always 'spot on' with this lens he tested on a X-T3.
I’ll have to take a look.
Hi Kirk, first of all thanks for great content that You do!
Secondly , in this case about soft image I think it could be a problem with Image Stabilization. At 1/4500 sec. shutter speed, IS can do more wrong with sharpness , its too fast to You use it. Anyway , did You use electronic or mechanical shutter?Greetings from Poland, Robert.
Hi Robert - I’m tending to agree with you. Mech shutter not electronic. So that could very well be the issue. I had a feeling that might be it. Interesting that so far you are the only one to mention it.
I think fuji gets a little confused with where the focal plane is when under exposed. In this picture anyway. Shooting at 1.4 and under exposed I think it thought the focal plane was closer to you and thus the building behind the focal plane was out of focus due to the 1.4. If you look at the blue sign it looks like it might be a little more in focus and it is closer to you (but might be just the contrast making it look more in focus, hard to zoom in with out the actual file). It would be an interesting test using Auto Focus vs Manual focus with a similar scene and settings.
Kirk - Very interesting I’ll have to check into that. If that were the case then the guy should have been tack sharp though given the distance away from the subject. He is also very close to the sign. I’ll look into that so thank you for commenting.
Just curious, why f/1.4? Certainly not for selective focus or action stopping. Two stops down and you'd still be 1/1000th, enough to stop a step, but with more sharpness overall.
This looks like a prime candidate for the "f/8 and be there" cliche'.
I like the image. I saw a similar small pointy roof building between larger structures in St. Augustine and posted up for an hour waiting for the perfect pedestrian to cross. It's all timing and luck, and your image works great.
Albert - I was out playing around with wide open. So I this scene presented itself and I gave it a shot. I figured that by focusing on the building everything would be sharp especially the building given that I was across the street. So I’m curious why the building I focused on is soft. Ummm
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography I have the 23mm f/1.4 and find it is better when used at full aperture at moderate to close distances. Maybe it's the contrast of the in and out of focus that gives this impression, the pop of the sharp against blur.
The old 18mm f/2 is the same. People that shoot at infinity says its soft, while people that shoot close in at f/2 like the subject pop and think.the lens is fine. I'm in the second group, I like it.
Did you try sharpening it in capture One it’s self? It’s a really good sharpening tool. Try amount 200-300 radius 1.5 threshold 0.1 and play around with the halo suppression. Always works for me :)
Wow I’ll have to try that. I think I did try ramping it up and it was way over done but I’m not sure exactly what I did I’ll have to try that. Topaz did a pretty awesome job though.
It's apparently a somewhat well-known issue that supposedly got better with the latest firmware update. Fuji apparently denied the AF issue for years but now recognizes it and is attempting to fix it.
I’m not sure it’s a focus issue since the whole image is soft. But good to know I’ll have to see about the firmware for the lens.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Apparently the issue is more prominent at apertures 5.6 and higher.
I like the intro guitar music! Mellow 😎. But I digress I guess 😆
Thanks Mike I should have you do an intro for me!
😆 No that's nice music. I like the house photo
I have had a similar issue with the XT5 and my 16-55 2.8. I got back from summer vacation and like 10 to 15% of my pictures are soft. I'm talking about shooting scenes similar to yours with large objects and in mostly good light with adequate shutter speeds. For no good reason the entire image is soft. I have not experienced this at all with my 16-55 2.8 on older Fuji bodies. I don't notice it as much after firmware update 2.03 on the XT5 but I still seem to get soft images on the XT5 for no good reason.
Dan - I think what is going on is with IS and the amount of mega pixels on the sensor. I know with the larger mp sensors you can’t handhold the camera in certain circumstances. I’m going to try and replicate it. I made three frames all in single frame at a time. I’ll try it with out IS on and see what happens.
Did you have face detect on?
Haha no it was off.
What's your favorite manual focus lens for Fuji? Been looking at the Voigtländer 23mm but the reports on field curvature prevent me from purchasing it
I purchased that lens and did a recent review on it so check it out! I liked it but for some reason the camera and lens would not stick to the same focusing aid. I like split image and it would not stay with it.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography thanks a lot, these are really interesting insights! Appreciate your amazing content
Just a thought arising from @albertsmith9315's comment about contrast levels maybe affecting issues; is the Astia "soft" simulation having an effect here? It deliberately lessens contrast "in camera" and the applied simulations in C1 and LR presumeably work in the same way. I'm not a recent LR version user (still on old-school Version 6) so can't help there, but in C1 If you process the raw file using the "linear response" curve, do you get enhanced sharpness compared with Astia?
Martin some good suggestions. I’ll have to take a look. However the problem was the original file being soft not the processed versions. Something is wrong with how the image was made and how the camera and lens made it. The problems were major issues with chromatic aberration that were not corrected by either software. Then the softness issue which neither software helped. Handheld at 1/4500s what I focused on from across the street should have been razor sharp even at 1.4 and it was not. The mystery continues!
