    Luffy is the simple solution to complex problems. Sanji being trapped on Baratie due to a debt is solved by Luffy saying to “just leave”, his solution to Nami’s financially slavery by Arlong is just “ok I’ll beat him up”. His neutrality to everything around him and make the simpliest solutions come true is always wonderful

      @lesten2707 seeing him repeatedly getting his A** beat for his friends and just what lengths he will go to for his friends adds a lot and makes you respect him more. The way he tries to help his enemies as well is admirable. And once Conquerors haki is introduced, it really explains why he can't back down. For example repeatedly trying to punch the inside of the snake 🤣. He is hard-headed, and through effort alone, he triumphs. And later in the story he gets more serious because they are in actual danger being at war with the yonkos and the marine's OP captains.

Where I felt the funny crew interactions were actually more funny rather than the same overused jokes later on.
      I also feel like the later arcs now are quite a bit longer and there's always high stakes & high tension without letting go.

    Luffy has a very subtle character arc, on the surface, he is exactly how you described him, however, as the show progresses and you start to pay more attention to the fine details, it becomes apparent that there is more depth to him than meets the eye. The first sign of inner wisdom was on jaya when luffy and zoro spoke with Blackbeard, as Blackbeard becomes more important, that interaction will also change your outlook on luffy. Luffy vs ussop also sets the tone for how luffy will grow as a character, that was one of his first true tests of his resolve as a captain and we’ll see more of that side of him in the future.

      Nope. He is one of the main shounen protagonists that doesn't change. And theres nothing wrong with that. I hate critics who say that a good character is the one who goes through changes. *Character development.* Thats the problem allegedly.
      What about *character influence?* Naruto, Goku. Talk no jutsu? Luffy doesn't change. They change the people around them. Luffy changed Zoro, Nami , Sanji, Usopp, just to name a few. He got them to join his crew and die for him. That's a solid character. Accepting Ace's death is development. Luffy getting everyone to his side, which is 99% of his character, thats influence.
      You know what's crazy? We don't judge a person's character this way in real life. Because by this standard, a prison inmate who turned his life around has a better character than a person who has no criminal record. *Because character development.* No. You judge unchanging characters from what others say about him. What he did for others.

    I think you have to look back at Luffy’s big moments and see that when he switches goober mode off, he’s so fun to watch. Arlong, Crocodile, Rob Lucci; these fights force him to zone in during the fight and realize what is at stake. It’s not just the fights either, it is also when his crew needs him. Throughout the entire series, any time a member of the crew or a future member of the crew is in need, he fights for their freedom. Nami in Arlong Park and Robin in Enies Lobby are the two biggest examples, but they happen more often than you think.

We aren’t just following Luffy and his crew, people are out and about doing their own thing and making their own moves. It makes the world feel so much more alive. The Ace vs Blackbeard fight was one of my favorite moments. We the audience knew it happened, but Luffy didn’t have a clue. So the tension was immediately raised in the following arcs. I can't really remember myself but I kind of remember myself feeling similar to Charlie, not that I didn't like Luffy but in these early arcs he was basically too strong for what they were fighting so Oda always had to find a way to sideline him to make the arcs longer whcih meant he would fall asleep, get lost, or something like eaten by a snake for half the arc before someone would free him and then the finale would begin. Kind of during and after Thriller Bark I think that starts to change once you're on the Warlords and up enemies. And when you get to the Emperors its almost the opposite where he may come to blows with them early just to show how outclassed he is.

It's the arc where the crew gets challenged as a crew, not a traveling group of friends, and Luffy get challenged as an actual captain, not some adventurer with childish dreams just wandering around. He made the hard decision of kicking his BEST FRIEND off the crew because his opinions would endanger the safety of everyone else and Luffy's always had incredible empathy while being very blunt about it.

In Arlong Park with the hat, the way he immediately looks past the parts of Brook and chopper that they think would scare others. "I still haven't heard you say it" to Robin. At the time that Enies Lobby was airing, the anime was dangerously close to catching up to the manga and running out of material to adapt. The studio wanted to keep up the weekly episodes rather than take a break, and that’s why they added those weird filler episodes in the middle of such a climactic moment. That’s also why Luffy was stuck in the snake belly for so long back in Spypeia. The anime really likes to play up Luffy’s lack of awareness for the sake of padding time.

    One of Luffy's greatest aspects is his emotional Intelligence, he can always read his crewmates emotions, respecting Ussops duel, Waiting for Nami to ask him for help first during Arlong park, Forcing Robin to say what she actually feels despite her sacrifice, The entirety of his relationship with Sanji during Whole cake island arc. That level of understanding keeps his crew together and boiling down his character to this goofy loudmouth idiot that is practically useless for 10-20 episodes before fighting the big bad is understandable but letting that side of his character affect your perception of what truly makes him a great character and leader is a bit undeserving.

A lot of Luffy's development as well is seen better in hindsight once you've reached certain points of the story. I really think a lot of his complaints about pacing stem from the fact that he’s watching the anime. It drags absolutely everything out, even the punches which you’d tend to imagine as fast from how their depicted in the manga. For example, in Long Ring Long Land they added a whole bunch of extra things that weren’t in the manga, making it like thirty episodes longer than it should’ve been. The manga is just the superior version of the story in my opinion, and I can say this considering that I watched over 200 episodes of the show and dropped it. After that I was told to read it instead, which turned out to be a much better experience. Now it’s one of my favorite pieces of fiction.

      That's fair, the manga pacing is like 10x better. That being said towards the latter half of one piece (mainly wano) the fights go harddd, I'd recommend watching those, plus the special moments when they say smth inspirational or emotional or whatever

      I agree that the manga is overall superior when it comes to pacing, but I still have one huge gripe with it. Oda's artstyle has severely regressed after the timeskip. Current one piece manga has this awful thick linework with messy ink and the shading is often this weird patchy spiderweb. Panels with nice composition are ruined with a bunch of reaction faces, most likely to give the "1 episode of manga to 1 episode of anime" toei pacing some stuff to padd out the episode runtime. Oda also has a nasty habit of adding pointless clutter to his drawing, like a bunch of "energy lines" flying out when a character throws a punch (and I am not talking about haki here). The characters also have this strange white fade around them to help them stick out from the cluttered background, which again he wouldn't even need to do is he didn't clutter the pages with fuzzy ink. Go and look at the latest chapter and then go check out the first. The difference is night and day and it is not a good improvement.

      I started watching it recently and the crew have just landed in alabasta. So far I'm enjoying it and zoro, nami and new addition chopper are all great but genuine question, when do luffy and usopp get more fleshed out? so far I'm with Charlie that Luffy is BY FAR my least favourite character. He seemed more intelligent and emotionally mature as a child in his flashback then he does currently and his "always on" stupidity really takes away any tension the show tries to build if Luffy is in the scene. I enjoyed Usopps introduction and his compulsive lying to make others feel better and liven up his town was a neat switch-up on an otherwise negative characteristic but there has been so many moments already where it feels like he's resolved himself and is going to change and make more of an effort and then next episode he immediately reverts back.
      I plan on continuing the show egardless but I'd mostly like to know if this is something I'm gonna have to deal with throughout or if they actually have a character arc and become more likable people with more nuance to their character, especially Luffy who right now is just "hehe im stupid, I like meat and am stupidly strong" on NON STOP REPEAT. Hell Goku was dense but he was never as outright stupid like Luffy is sometimes which is saying something lmao.

      As for Usopp, he has a much more hidden growth that's hard to see unless you really pay attention to who he is as a character.

    I think the complaints about Luffy are valid, but I think it's more understandable when you know his motivation. Luffy essentially just wants to have fun and go on an adventure. It's why he doesn't bat an eye when Buggy is about to chop his head off. It's why he doesn't go out of his way to kill the villains. Luffy just wants to be free and go on adventures with his friends. One thing i think is easy to miss is how he so readily and fully believes in his friends' dreams no matter how ridiculous. Nami and Sanji for example almost always get laughed at even by their closest friends for having ridiculous goals, but Luffy just believes them right away. To him it's just a matter of fact that they'll one day achieve their dreams even if everyone else would say otherwise. All his crew in turn trust him completely as well. It's his power to bring people together and make them believe in each other so completely that makes him a good protagonist imo.

    It's so cool to hear people's experiences with the show, I personally loved it from episode 1 and I really got invested during Arlong Park arc. I think it was such a great way to show how Luffy has some solid morals even if he's a goof, and showed a very complex side of Nami as well. I have the best memories watching this show and especially the earlier seasons. I know the anime likes to take it's time, but I skipped over the filler especially after the time skip. Some early filler was really good though. If you're looking for a show that will have devastating consequences, this isn't it, but it'll make you feel good and happy inside, which I think we all need form time to time ahaha.

He feels genuine anger on behalf of the oppressed, he sheds tears for his friends gets the shit beaten out of him putting his life on the line for others. He does often put them in a difficult situation, but because his intentions are always to help the oppressed, those people end up joining his side and balancing the scales, resulting in a super satisfying victory after a steep and tenacious uphill climb.

      Him shitting on skypiea luffy actually hurt my soul because that arc is what made luffy a legend for me
      The entire arc was built around luffy wanting to prove that the sky island exists, that being said we get to watch luffy just explore and have a goofy fuck around of a time on AN ISLAND IN THE SKY THAT WE NOW KNOW DOES EXIST and all the while he is slowly putting together what’s going on around the island, it takes such a long time to build up that you start to think “wow this luffy guy is really just fucking off around this arc” and then you get to the climax of his enel fight and all of a sudden you realize that THE ENTIRE TIME LUFFY WAS FUCKING AROUND ON THIS ISLAND HE ONLY HAD ONE GOAL SHOOTING THROUGH HIS MIND AND IT WAS TO RING THAT FUCKING BELL
      DUDE LITERALLY TUNNEL VISIONED AN ENTIRE ARC JUST TO PROVE TO A GUY HE KNEW FOR TWO DAYS THAT THERE REALLY WAS SOMETHING UP THERE AND HIS LIFES WORK WASNT FOR NOTHING
      it’s just such a grand beautiful payoff, and that’s when I realized luffy wasn’t dumb, he just goes with the flow with only one singular goal in mind and he doesn’t stop until that goal is achieved regardless of everything that gets in his way because he’s just a pirate on his own journey. Skypiea luffy changed the entire game for me and his tunnel vision has held strong through the entire manga and I CANT wait to see the inevitable end.
      Wish Charlie could see the in between where luffy secretly knows what he wants in every arc and accomplishes it 99% of the time

Today that concept no longer exists, productions aim for immediate impact so it's very difficult for someone to cach on with OP. I'm actually watching this with my little sister, and we're almost at water 7 so its kinda nice to see Charlie's around there too. In my opinion, I was on board with the show since episode 1 but Arlong Park made me a fan. The whole One Piece doesn't kill people is a valid point but the stories that it tells for not only its main characters but also its side ones make it amazing. Even the backstory of some random guard dog from the buggy arc near the beginning of the show was so beautiful that it makes you root and worry for them despite knowing that they probably won't die. When a show can keep you engaged and invested into even the most irrelevant of characters without the risk of death. That's the sign of a good show.

    • @can_can9119
      @can_can9119 Год назад +12

      Personally imo I don't see why people think the only stakes a work of fiction can have is someone dying. The entire central theme revolves around dreams, and Oda has gone on record to say Luffy doesn't fight to kill but to crush the villains dreams that harm others. Idk, it's a weird thing for people to get hung up on.

    • @Rodpod
      @Rodpod Год назад +3

      @can_can9119 I agree 100%. Also even if they don't die, the villains like arlong and crocodile are beaten so badly that their lives and goals are fundamentally destroyed, practically killing them off in the sense of purpose rather than in a traditional literal sense. To me, that's more poetic and gives greater stakes as whether they are defeated determines the lives of the islands and world around them. If arlong hadn't been defeated, cocoyashi village would forever be extorted and east blue would pretty much belong to arlong. And if crocodile hadn't been defeated, the people of alabasta mostly would've died from civil war or dehydration. Just cause the main characters/villains lives aren't necessarily at stake cause of plot armor doesn't mean that a battle doesn't have tremendous stakes in the world as a whole.

He's trying to hammer home the idea that crushing the villains dreams, and them being forced to live with the fact they'll never accomplish what they set out to achieve is tantamount to death.
      People can like that or hate it, completely subjective but imo it's perfect for a story that revolves around dreams and the means people will go through to achieve it, no matter who it hurts. I can understand why people wouldn't like that approach in a shonen though.

    I had the EXACT same experience. Everyone I know that I respect their opinions said One Piece is the best story ever told. I tried 4 times to start the anime, would get frustrated or fall asleep (wishing I could somehow catch up in my sleep lol). Made it a handful of episodes and gave up. Eventually I grinded it out while doing art and watching it in the background. By the time Alabasta finishes it stopped feeling like a grind and I started liking it. After Water 7 I started loving it. Im at Whole Cake now and obsessed. I cannot believe something so perfect exists. The more the back stories flesh out and more world building threads are tossed into the mix and more emotional scenes happen it becomes something that no one can deny. Its literally a masterpiece of story telling and yes even the beginning was necessary. You grow along WITH the characters. The SHOW itself matures while the characters do. And Luffy, for all his goofiness eventually becomes insanely beloved. Even though he IS stupid, his heart and passion intensifies and the fact that everywhere he goes people are flabbergasted with his child-like reckless abandon and his selfless defense of the down trodden and his ability to trust in “humanity” while everyone else has been so broken by the cruelty of the world and they cant help but admire someone like that and wholeheartedly believe he WILL BE THE PIRATE KING.
