I do not own or take any rights to this song
Full of cruel sea captains, Giant angry whales, crazy schizophrenic revenge seeking mariners what else could you ask for in a song Видеоклипы
Confucius once said "Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves" and the fact that they both ended up in the same place that would essentially become their grave is some mad symbolism that I almost didn't even notice
He wouldn’t have wanted to go out any other way, I’m sure

Don't really know why I find this so darn interesting, but his mother's voice sounds stronger and livelier after she is dead.
As she is dying, her voice is thin and raspy as she loses strength.
However when she sings to the Mariner on the ship, her voice sounds stronger and fuller.
I'd like to think that in her death, she finds strength and purpose to watch over and protect her child as he travels to avenge her.
It's very sweet in a strange, twisted sort of way.
I like to think that it is only his imagination and he has gone crazy so the whistle on the wind becomes a voice driving him to murder a man he only knew as a 3 year old
But I also like to think it's just a fun song to sing and play guitar to and to tell a story
Also with the ship one it has an echo as if she's communicating from the afterlife
I just think it's because there's multiple voices because he hears it in the breeze
@@hannahnewnham4220 theres multiple voices because they had 2 backup singers
@@kingamity1985 yeah I know that now, I saw the live recording 😂
Nothing like a song on Mothers Day about a man avenging his mother against the man who destroyed her!

Somehow I too ended up finding this song on a Mother’s Day through a series of coincidental events

I love his singing style. It's EXTREMELY distinct.
Reminds me of the singer of the mountain goats sorta
@@steveking9146I was thinking the same
Why you gotta yell? Yes, Colin is awesome, a story teller and a poet.
After that last line, the song goes into instrumentals playing the melody of the mother's last words, which are instructions on how to kill the man. Do you get what I'm saying? As that melody is being played over and over, faster and faster, the mariner is shattering the man's fingers, and burying him alive (somehow accomplishing that inside a whale).
he practically did bury them both by allowing them to be eaten by the whake
+Tabbi Cunningham whale I meant haha
Tabbi Cunningham I suppose so.
+Shenyi Yang well its possible idk tho haha
That's exactly what is happening. The musical equivalent of cutting away just as the knife plunges down.
Cool song. It's not every day that you hear one that tells a continuous story without cryptic lyrics!
"When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that not only do the gods exist; you're doing their will."
That’s a raw line where’s it from?
@@yaboi8130 Kill Bill, actually.
Shot in the gut, slumped against a wall, about to be executed by some German Catholic bitch quoting Kill Bill. Truly, a traitors death.
Reminds me heavily of that new-ish animated show "Blue Eye Samurai". The main character is clearly not a good person and repeatedly states that she doesn't consider herself a Samurai, but rather a rouge swordsman on a quest of revenge. Despite this, all of those around her are constantly dismayed when she refuses to follow the honorbound Samurai code, especially whenever it conflicts with her primary revenge quest. However, she does seem oddly lucky. Often, the people she's after, or others with useful information, just so happen to cross her path with surprising regularity. Obviously, it's a fictional show, so these unlikely coincidences happening rather often are part of the viewer's "willing suspension of disbelief."
It DOES seem to suggest/imply, at least to religious folks, that there is a certain amount of divine intervention or approval in her mission.
I can definitely believe that Bishamonten at least (Shinto god of War and Good luck) smiles on her quest for revenge, yeah. I'm trying to see if there's an actual god in Shinto dedicated to revenge/vengeance but I'm not finding one. But it's easy for me to believe that a god of war might pull double duty as a god of vengeance/revenge, as it is a form of conflict and thus easily falls within the wheelhouse of "war".@@1lovesoni
I love this song so very, very much: the poetry, the vocabulary, the story, the composition! This is a very precious gift, thank you all so, so much!
this needs to be a movie

Reminds me of the canceled cartoon, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack
+Nick Wright I’ve always said that the creators of flapjack should make a short for this with captain knuckles as the antagonist, and flapjack the protagonist. Bubby could eat them it would be perfect.

Their entire album entitled "The Hazard's of Love" is one big story. It tells an interesting story of a half man half beast that falls in love with women in the woods but his mother, a witch, forbids them to be together. Sounds cheesy but it is excellent. Especially "The Rake's Song" if you want creepy. Hope that helps.
10 years later and I came across this post and looked that album up.
Fucking love it. Thank you.
Thanks for the tip!
And 11 years later I'm writing a fanfiction that not only includes that album, but this song too. I mean the narrator does call this guy he's telling the story to a rake. What's to say that before he became a mariner, this rake didn't try to marry at twenty-one and do all the horrible things that rake did? It'd make the guy even more of an evil bastard.
you can also think that the the ending line “and i will whisper the last words you’ll hear” just cuts back to the beginning “we are two mariners” part and the song just repeats itself in a never ending loop
Best take
His voice is perfect for such a dark little song. I love it
I believe its "Debt ridden, drunken mess". Not "Dead Ridden". If he was dead, this would be a short story/song.
Googled "Dead Ridden" and could not find a single definition of the saying. So why would Colin Meloy quote a phrase that is so uncommon that not even google can define it?
***** Because you said it was a saying. I would imagine if it was something popular enough to be called a "saying" then google would have something on it.
***** Please tell me you're joking. Try it for literally any that actually exist. Dead ridden is not a saying.
***** It really isn't a phrase at all. The first thing google does it try to correct it to "death ridden," then if you don't let it, the first response is an article about cops shooting a "dead cancer-ridden" man. A couple translations of "dead ridden" into greek, and a movie called "Dead Ridden". Even Death Ridden isn't a phrase other than a poem was once titled that particular series of words. Seriously, go look up your facts before making an idiot of yourself.
***** While technically true, there is an almost impossibly strong corroboration between zero relevant search results and such a thing existing. Why would the most used search engine on the planet, with access to unfathomably large amounts of information and stats, have ZERO idea what you're saying? Isn't it nearly infinitely more likely that you are wrong?
I love btw, your ad hominem arguments in both of your posts rather than ANY facts or evidence. lol good luck with those because they matter. I would tell you to google that phrase [ad hominem], but you likely wouldn't trust the results so...
I love his voice
Agreed
I love the accent
At 0:45 It is "But I remember you, and I will RELAY to you..."
At 1:30 it is "...you proved a debt-ridden drunken mess..." which is proven at 1:47 with the line "Your gambling arrears..." (Google's definition of arrears: money that is owed and should have been paid earlier.)
In other words, the dad is and was just a drunk deadbeat
@@matthewgg9286 he's technically a stepfather.
@@kainlocke9934 well.... more like moms live in for a bit till the sea called him home again. Men like that in those times found no home on land or in the arms of a woman but in the arms of the salt breeze and on the rising tide
This song is an absolute masterpiece.
This is a story of revenge but also about the futility of it. The boy spent his whole short life finding his father to kill him in the name of revenge for what? He’s in the same whale as his father in the end. How’s he going to escape?
If you embark on revenge, dig two graves.
@Magnus Antonsen he also says "my widowed mother" so there is that.
Atanacio Garza That was already mentioned in the comment that you are replying to.
Was it really his father?
@@ohmygoditisspider7953 step-father, iirc
Regional colloquialisms aside, the son makes several mentions of financial problems, i.e. gambling arrears, forclosure on the estate, dog racing, etc. The lyric would logically be debt ridden. If it were dead ridden, the translated lyric would be messy drunken mess. A tad redundant.
in the time it wasn't dog racing it was dog fighting, although it makes sense
I believe it was rat baiting you take a pit a bunch of rats and small terrier dog you can see how it goes from there it was actually how rats were domesticated
Its ribs are ceiling beams, its guts are carpenting- do you think they are saying the "whale" is the skeleton remains of a ship or do you think they are literally in the belly of a whale. Love this song, but confused a little at this line. Thoughts?
I think the belly of a whale is emblematic. Genius as well. If one looks at where the "belly of the whale" actually is taken from that is. After hearing this song daily for years now, it is a favorite of mine and I play it for anyone who will sit still long enough to listen and then talk about it afterwards, I find myself referring to a "belly of a whale" now whenever there is a problem. Brilliant song! And the talent of these musicians can clearly be heard during the instrumental part not at the end which renders its own nightmarish problems, but during the instrumental after the second chorus of "find him bind him" Pure talent behind those strings there.
RRFBINH u
This is a self-aware fiction. It's a non-realistic imagining of what it would be like inside a whale if you were swallowed whole and hanging out in there.
Ariel Rozen I don’t think you get symbolism
I don't think it's referring to the ship but rather the house that the protagonist lost as a child. I think this because when i first heard the song i thought the line was "it's ribs OUR ceiling beams, its guts OUR carpeting" like the protagonist had already admitted defeat and made this his new home. idk past that but i don't see much of a connection between the ship and the whale other than the ceiling beams being the large logs that outline the ships structure.
This song tells a great story all the way through. His voice sounds so off key or sour but it is so fitting and still somehow very fulfilling.
just saw them 2 days ago at the majestic in Dallas, TX. Was the best experience of my life. Encored them back onto the stage 3 times, and they finished so strongly with this song. Tons of great crowd interaction and he even had people from the back come to the front to fill in seats even though it was a sold out show. Must have been 700-800 people there. Love these guys.
This is probably my favourite Decemberists' song, but how the blood clot can he see anything in the stomach of a whale?
he lit a match inside
If the ship was swallowed and the crew above deck chewed, then I'm sure a lantern would have been included in the cargo and crew that was consumed by said giant whale..
Are the last words he ever heard the last words the Mariners mother said?
seekee520 yeah
*They are whatever you want them to be*.
The last words would be the entire song as it begins
Wouldn't you love to know?

I want this song at the end of a musical about this story
God this song is such a fucking bop. We need more music like this I swear. I love murder revenge songs that sounds like they were played ona pirate ship. It's my favorite genre 😌
This song is perfection to me. Absolute...Perfection. It says how I feel about certain relationships in my life. Great rhyming words, story, EVERYTHING music, not all sounding the same.... Changes yet consistent.. WHAT ELSE COULD YOU ASK FOR? They should play this song more on radios put it in movies... Hell they should make a movie of this song. It's a great story! Yes, Thank you universe for creating this song..........Thank you! ---sobs for feeling complete and at peace--- ---sobs more-- YES!
i'm surprised no one's made a flapjack themed version of this song as an animation
I just got done binging all of my childhood shows and i finished flapjack about 2 months ago and good god was it funny. i didn't remember anything when i watched it as a kid, and when i re watched it, it was so hillarious🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
@@debrawheeler6555 i know right!
I did a vocal of this in a whispery, Cockney accent and sent it to a friend of mine. He told me I was NEVER, EVER to use that voice around him EVER again. I posted it on Facebook, and got the same reaction from a few other people. Apparently, I scared the shit out of them. Can't imagine why...
Ah...The Decemberists. The Mariner has taken me on a wild gypsy dance of the spirit, driven along by the quickening rhythms of the tambourines' frantic jangle. This vengeance is just and righteous, but in the end, the orphan child's life will still be empty.
LOL ...and there's that, too.

But the whales belly wont be.
How poetic.

I FINALLY FOUND THIS SONG AFTER 8 YEARS, FINALLY
I looked up “song about person in a whale with a person who killed their mother” and this was the first video I saw
sound so soothing to my ears.
Yo I would want revenge too. The guy met this woman, became involved with her, gave her a deadly STD even though she had a kid, dumped his gambling debt on her and her only child, left her homeless, broken, and dying, forced to leave her child alone in the world. While the mom did give him a fucked up task, he could've not done it and went on with his life, even sought help from his despair from the holy man. But no, he was just as angry as she was, to the point where revenge completely consumed him.
Easily my favorite song by them. It's so eerie when it goes instrumental at the end... you just know what's happening :D
You can almost hear the screaming at the end
I write short storys. They're more or less just for me. But my friends and family love reading them. I had thought of the idea of writing a story of a man being eaten by a whale and trapped in there for a couple of days but then I threw away the idea and one for something else. After hearing this I think I will continue that story but with different characters.
I fucking love this song
crawling from a grave is hard enough if not impossible. then doing it beaten and tortued and with broken fingers................ gg captain gg.
he didn't crawl out of a grave.. he was "clawing at the ceiling of his grave" 😂
Yeah clean your ear hole
The finger breaking is to *prevent* crawling out of a grave
I love this song so much but it manages to sneak it's way after every single video I watch. GG, my friend; GG.
Having only heard this on radio I didn't know he was saying 'Come Hell.' So thanks. The song makes much more sense.
This video always makes me think this story is real and every second I was talking about it makes me feel like I'm wasting time...regardless...I love this song...
my father would sing this as a lullaby to me when i was a kid
That's a hell of a dad.
Moral of the story: When you have months to prepare, don't wait until the last moment to clean your muskets!
A great song(in my opinion) for inspiration of dark themes, and helps me work on essays involving the matter. Absolutely love it.
During the end instrumental, I just imagine the kid stabbing the guy, and as the tempo picks up, it just gets much faster, until all that's left is the skeleton
I love how the last seconds of the song just sound like straight up murder
I love this song so much. A true masterpiece.
6:10 - 6:12, is my favorite part with the string instrument.
Gotta love a cello. Like blackened syrup
here's what makes this horrifying to me. There's a good chance the guy he's in the whale with isn't his mom's boyfriend just some guy with a bad temper and similar looks. Memories fade even of people we think we know really well.
For example I'm a big Bill Murray fan I watched a lot of his movies as a kid and I was convinced he was in this one family drama movie. I spent months trying to find it again utterly convinced the lead was played by Bill Murray. One day I described the plot to my brother and and he said " Yeah that wasn't Bill Murray it was Kevin Kline." At least I didn't kill anyone over it.
Thats a really interesting take on the end of this song
The captain as this guy is singing of why and he's gonna kill him in this whale where no one can stop him: ha ha. I'm in danger.
Psychotic and obsessive but not schizophrenic
He does have aural hallucinations though
@@aideethaleine Schizophrenia requires more than that, though. Not to mention you can be schizophrenic without hallucinations at all.
Sounds more like a story being told than a song. Very good job, best lyric video I ever watched:D
I keep imagining the singer's wearing a ridiculous smile for most of the song.
Mariner: We are two mariners, our ship's sole survivors... :D
Captain: Quit goofing around, man. This isn't funny.
Until it finally dawns on the captain, of course.
This really is a catchy song.
