I work at a Ford dealership, have driven both of these generation trucks... The newer one has more tech and a slightly better laid out interior, and I think it looks better. But the older one just feels a little more special, it's hard to describe it. I think the 6.2L V8 has a lot to do with it, MUCH better sounding engine to go along with the aggressive look. If you listen closely, he's NOT just trading trucks for the (less powerful but better sounding) V8 engine.
He's planning a lot of mods that would not be "financially" wise on that new $70k truck.
He's buying the older one because it won't be a financial loss to do major modifications.
He wouldn't be getting $60k for his 1 year old truck if he had major modifications that altered it much from factory.
He'll need to do engine work to the older one to get the performance of the 3.5 EB.
I just happen to have a 3.5 EB in my personal truck and a 6.2 V8 in my work truck.
So I get to drive both on a regular basis. 😁

Not true. The 6.2 V8 is a stronger package than the EcoBoost. You are comparing a light duty passenger vehicle engine to a 3/4 ton duty truck engine here. 6.2 is a big bore cast iron block with cross bolted mains in a naturally aspirated setup. The EcoBoost or any half ton motor for that matter isn’t running with the 6.2 on longevity. The 6.2s are overbuilt for their purpose and Ford built them to work hard.

If a guy cant afford to throw a bunch of money at modding a 70k truck and decides to downgrade and mod an older one, great thats his choice, but its damn obvious that such choice was made with personal finances in consideration. I'll take it a step further and would argue that if you cant buy a car/truck outright, you have no business buying it. Financing vehicles is a link in the slave chain which keeps the middle class poor in America.

Yeah, once you've enjoyed a good V8 exhaust note, you can't go back (or if you do, like I had to at one point, you'll be back to a V8 when you can, like I am once again)

Love my Gen 1 raptor. Great to see the comparison. BTW, the spare tire on the gen1 is lose. Could see it when doing the exhaust comparison. Might want to tighten that up. (mine come lose from time to time)

Gen 2 looks far better in my opinion. More "robust" looking. And I can appreciate that the V6 makes as much power ad it does. And with some exhaust mods you can make it sound mean. But you just can't beat the V8.

Very comprehensive overview of the process on both trucks. The only thing I’m curious to know from the owner is are there any plans to address the front end difference? Speaking strictly aesthetically the Gen 2 front looks so much better than the Gen 1.

Ford could have avoided a lot of bullcrap if they would have just included an optional V8 for the new Raptor. Any time I've ever heard anyone talk about the new generation the V8 always comes up. That was sheer stupidity on the blue ovals part.

Doesn't include the tax title and reg he paid. Ultimately he lost 10k from the truck alone but an additional 12k+ on fees and more on the 2014 replacement. Clearly he can afford it but still. His argument is its more cost effective to have the old when he just shelled out 30k in depreciation and fees. Wish I could afford that ignorance lol

Could't agree more with this decision! I've got a 2012 Raptor and put 145k miles on it thus far, driving all over the USA. Nothing like the sound of that V8! Once this baby hits 250k miles on the odometer I only see two acceptable options as upgrades/replacements: MegaRaptor or BA350!!

I don’t own a Raptor but I do own 2011 Lariat Limited that has the same engine as the 1st gen Raptors. I like to tell people that my Raptor is wearing a tuxedo! You know, there are certain cars/trucks that just should not be messed with and Ford did this to these 2 icons by getting rid of the V8 in favor of V6s and these 2 vehicles I am speaking of are the GT(40) and the Raptor…now, I know there are others but these 2 jumped right to the forefront. If the same engineering went into the V8s as Ford did with the V6s then I feel Ford would have kept the V8.

He likes fast off roading, so he goes for the slower raptor with less advanced suspension and known problems with the frames bending.

    • @T4nkcommander

Logic. To be fair, only the 2010 and 2011 models had the regular f150 frames. It got reinforced in 2012, so he should be good.
He also said Raptor Assault was impressive, so 'fast' is 30-40mph to him.

I'm concerned that they are still having VVT (cam phaser) problems. The v-6 is starting to show signs of problems. I was a long time Ford customer who had catastrophic failure of the 5.4 liter 3-valve. Eating a $7,000 repair was not good, plus dealing with a Ford lawyer and customer service was not good.

  • @digi63

The way the money lost on the v6 truck was described is kind of misleading. Saying he paid about 70k and is being given 60k sounds like he lost 10k but there are other factors. If he financed it then the first year he really did not pay down the principle on the truck much and most of the payment went to pay interest so he most likely still owes close to 70k. He already paid sales tax on the 70k vehicle and now has to pay tax again on the 30k vehicle. Expensive lesson learned.
