    As a disabled woman this actually helped me understand some of my experiences. I've had a few encounters that left me asking, "was that sexism or ableism?". Hadn't considered that it could be both.

      Phoebe as a fellow disabled woman I can affirm first hand that yes, it definitely can be, & often is. I’m so glad the video - which was excellent - helped you to better realize this b/c imo understanding is necessary to more effectively combatting the mistreatment, discrimination, stereotypes, etc. Keep on keepin on!🔆

      @@Mel-pb5xw , not understanding can lead to a feeling of being gaslighted by society because you're always doubting yourself. You can't really combat anything if you're in that state.

      Thank you so much for making this comment. As a white woman, I kinda needed something else to help it sink in I guess.
      I’m in a relationship with someone with a significant age difference as well as a difference in race, and I’ve often wondered, when we get disapproving looks in a small Midwest town, if it was because of our difference in age or ethnicity. Yeah... I’ve always told myself that the answer is “it doesn’t matter,” but sadly, “it’s both,” is probably true as well.

    • @jinmushui1soul
      @jinmushui1soul 5 лет назад +12

      That might take more than one video! Especially since "post-colonial theory" most accurately refers to a particular historical philosophical moment in the mid 20th century (the end of the "Age of High Imperialism" as Said called it). Currently active theory (especially in regards to global blackness) would be better understood as "anti-colonial" as it is build around an understanding that colonialism hasn't ended, rather simply that (for some people and in some contexts) it's structures and demographics have evolved (for other people, it's still the same old colonialism). I think a video on "decolonization" (what it is and what it ain't) would be possible.

    thanks for this really informative video, kat. one of the reasons intersectionality is so important that i find people don't often focus on is the idea that, while -isms do interact with each other to create unique experiences of oppression, they also coexist with privileges that people also have to be aware of, despite being a minority. you see this a lot in terms of people saying "i can't be x (racist, sexist, ableist, etc.) because i'm y (queer, a woman etc.). make no mistake, i'm not trying to argue that poc have the social capital to perpetuate racism or anything like that. but i think it's important to acknowledge that while you can be privileged on one axis, you can also be marginalized on another. the experiences someone has in one facet of their identity don't cancel out or invalidate the others.

  • @kevincurrie-knight3267
    @kevincurrie-knight3267 2 года назад +1

    By my understanding of the term, intersectionality also means not only that racism+sexism is worse than either on its own, BUT that the two together mean that each may be DIFFERENTLY experienced when someone experiences both.
    The example I always think about is that while women are subject to harsher beauty standards than men, black women aren't just subject to arguably harsher beauty standards, but somewhat different beauty standards. To get even more specific, women are expected to do more and spend more time and care on their hair than are men. But black women, who may have very different hair than white women, will often have very different hair care options than white women, and will be judged quite differently for their hair than will white women.
    So, not just "two forms of oppression are worse than one." But "two forms of oppression - because of how they interact with each other - may equal quite a different experience than one."

    We are Hispanics. I feel that if you’re not white the you get the short end of the stick more often than not.
    At one of my older jobs, I did more than one role without the pay increase. When my old boss turned in her retirement I decided to apply. Suddenly, they had a freeze on hiring, weeks later they gave me my old bosses work without the pay. I eventually quit.
    My sister was encouraged by a white woman to apply for a role. My sister did admin work. She did a lot of the executives presentations and the white men took credit. When she went to interview, the same lady that encouraged her was in the room too. An executive white male came in, looked at her, looked at her resume, and said “what makes you think you are a fit for this role? Maybe you should apply for a warehouse job. McDonald’s is also hiring down the street.” Then he walked out. The lady looked at him and my sister in shock. It broke my sister.
    As Hispanic women, the stereotype is that we are cleaning ladies, warehouse workers, breeders, and what not.
    It’s like for some white people, it’s a shock for a non white woman to be educated and smart.
    I don’t know how many times people have assumed that I work in customer service. I have a high level position paying a lot of money. I don’t like having to prove myself. We shouldn’t have to.

    Do people get discriminated based on multiple traits, yes. Is it right, no. I acknowledge this, yes, and agree it's awful awful stuff. Done.
    Now when it comes to the workforce with me it's about preformance and production. If you can't make the cut, your cut. If you can't make the sale, see ya. Don't care if your guy, girl, straight, gay, or bi. You will gain respect by hard work, results, and positive attitude towards work in the right environment. If they discriminate you for this when your numbers are above satisfactory, then get out of that company as soon as you've got a solid job opportunity lined up. It may take sometime and you may have to relocate your living arrangements but in the end you and your employer/employees will be in a happier, better place when you find the right fit. If they can't see a golden goose when ones in front of their face then it's their loss, right?

    Thank you for the video, great explanation and information!
    On a somewhat related note I feel a number of white people, who want to do the right thing but don't understand fully all the issues involved (myself included,) are having a hard time knowing how to be supportive with the Surviving R Kelly documentary. I want to support and encourage black women without overstepping in criticism of R Kelly and thus inadvertently forcing people to defend black men. I don't want to attack black men or black culture, just the actions of R Kelly. (I feel I'm not doing a great job at this, if my paragraph above didn't prove it.)
    If you are thinking about doing a video on the documentary or a similar subject could you also please consider touching on this issue? Thank you!

    On a related note, we in the atheist community can sometimes fail to take seriously concerns raised by ex-Muslim atheists or African-American atheists or female atheists.
    For example, here in Western countries, ex-Muslim atheists are in a peculiar position. Because they have the same last names and the same appearance as Muslims, to the extent that anti-Muslim bigotry exists, they get subjected to all the same crap as Muslims.
    When Muslims complain of anti-Muslim bigotry, you have to carefully examine the claims because, like Christians, Muslims will often misrepresent legitimate criticism as bigotry, but when ex-Muslim atheists in the West complain about anti-Muslim bigotry in the West, that is time to pay more attention. All too often, the atheist community just responds with "It's not bigotry because Islam is not a race" or whatever ridiculous bumper sticker argument they got from some right-wing free speech warrior on RUclips instead of taking our fellow atheists more seriously.
    Ex-Muslim atheists are number one on the infidel kill list. They are among the fiercest critics of Islam, but when ex-Muslim atheists start complaining about anti-Muslim bigotry, that is precisely the time to listen to their concerns.

    Intersectionality is a term that stands against the idea of Judge not a person by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

    I've been hearing and reading about complaints from non-white feminists since I was a child (I'm 50). I'm ashamed to say that I didn't take those concerns very seriously until 2016 when 54% of white women voted for a pussy-grabber because they happened to like his racism. That was when I had the unpleasant realization that I should have been taking those concerns much more seriously than I had been (double shame on me there as I'm half white).
    When I went to the woman's march following Trump's election, I saw a lot of protest signs mentioning intersectionality. I didn't quite grasp what the signs were talking about. I kept meaning to read about intersectionality, but never got around to it. Thanks for your summary as it finally gave me the kick in the rear to go and read the thing. This is exactly what I should have been more aware of long before the 2016 election.
