All genders, regardless of how defined (biologically, culturally, psychologically, et al.) should have equal rights. I don't mean this in the distractingly dismissive "All lives matter" way, but in an earnest, honest everyone matters way.
I want the full episode!!! What did you wanna talk about Lucy and from then until Mary Wollstonecraft?? I wanna know!!! What are you holding back from us!!! hehe, thanks for all the knowledge showcased though
I was 2 English credits short of graduation & workerd with a professor who was literally packing for vacation while we spoke. I had 3 days to put together something she felt worthy of 2 credits. I wrote a 14 page paper on feminism in Frankenstein & the influence of Mary Wollstonecraft on Mary Shelley. It still astonishes me that such a deeply complicated concept was created by a teenage girl in direct response to a challenge by men in such a brief period. I don’t think just any talented writer could have developed the layers Shelley did. Both her parents had tremendous influence on her. Much has been written about Wollstonecraft’s influence on Shelley but I’d love to have seen Wollstonecraft’s response to Frankenstein.
I love the sections on intersectionality and how a lot of feminist movements have historically left entire groups of women out of their feminism, because this really isn’t talked about enough. I especially appreciate the opening example of a trans woman too, particularly given the current political climate. One day, feminism by default will include all women. I know I will fight for that day.
last time i received a canadian long form census there was a full sheet attached at the end pointing out that most of us aren't ethnically canadian. so for my answer to the question about: list all your ancestor's ethnicity i said something about lucy being my oldest ancestor and that i wasn't sure about her ethnicity since it wasn't invented then
Feminism helps men too by helping us see how we also suffer under patriarchy and how it impacts the ways we are allowed to feel, express, and operate in the world. Bell Hooks (who was also mentioned in the video), has done some great work in this area. Great series and awesome video everyone.
Exaclty. Patriarchy is a system that hurts everyone. It hurts women more, which puts men on top, but we would all be better off without the patriarchy.
Toxic power structures are everywhere. Seeing some from a position of privilege and some from a position of problems helps us understand other things. Seeing how Romani people were treated in Bulgaria helped me understand racism in the US, for example.
Is it the patriarchy or is it that the very ambitious exploit those that they think they can use? I honestly feel like this argument is missing the true source of the issue, because even when you get rid of the patriarchy you're not going to change how wealth is distributed amongst people, or how political and social power is used by people to benefit only themselves and oppress those beneath them.
It can help men too, but it is not an adequate replacement for [good] men's rights advocacy. Not every societal problem men face are the result of or directly related to "patriarchy".
Thanks for this insightful series, Crash Course team! I'd love to see sources added to a doc or even blurbs like the European History series. I'm hoping it's possible since you'll likely already have the bibliography for the series/each episode script!
Nice series! For the next episode, the slogan surprised me cuz i have always said and done the other way around : "think globally, act locally". Which in my opinion is a way of . saying " think broadly and considering as much nuances and possible, and then implemented them by example in your everyday and local life. "Thinking locally and act globally", since to me a bit colonialism, like kins od "think in your local narrow world, and act imposing it to the rest of the global world", So I'm very curious and look very much forward for the next episode. 😊❤
Thanks for all the work you do to help philosophy reach people so we can transform with it. In case it matters the slogan is: ‘Think Global act local.’ Not the other way.
@@joideegacoizeega8329 For example, just today a federal judge in Kentucky struck down the Title IX provision protecting transgender protections. The religious right that is empowering Trump's election and new Administration is aiming to get the USSC to overturn the Obergefell decision. There is a long list of stated goals by religious right activists and throwbacks that they intend to try once Trump is in office and appointing more judges.
As a person who has rather strong distaste for the modern feminist movement, this video convinced me to read some Bell Hooks. I think this video did a good job at highlighting the different perspectives within the feminist movement. Kudos!
If we were to assign monetary value to the labor female family members perform in the household, who would bear the cost? Would male family members be the ones obligated to pay? Does this mean that familial relationships are, in essence, capitalist relationships? Is my wife my worker? Am I her boss? What exactly is being said by calculating labor value of a woman's household work in terms of wages?
Every person of conscious should Read "Feminism is for Everybody" and "The Will to Change" by bell hooks. The best books I've ever read about the topics at hand. Especially if you're a man read the Will to Change, incredibly insightful, incredibly useful and well researched.
I would like to see a longer version of this as well. The subject becomes so much more complex when we begin to realize that our entire economy and society is structured around the idea of the man getting paid and the women working at home for free. It will continue to funnel all the money and power to men until we can change our society, but it is difficult to know how to make things better. Maybe more funding for college should be available to women only, to help balance everything out.
4:56 I don’t think anyone was ever saying that work didn’t have value. House work has to get done and it will never be paid regardless of who does it. Caveat is women have not had control of their finances until very recently and men were “supposed” to take care of the woman’s needs and wants.
Female or male are biological realities. Gender identity, like any other form of identity, is a social construct and depends on the social group's acceptance of the identity that a person wishes to present.
We say just "Basketball" rather than "Men's Basketball", because it's far more popular. The difference is huge, and Women's Basketball is not even close. It's the same with other sports where the men's category is overwhelmingly more popular. Nothing to do with sexism, it's just numbers. There are sports where this is not the case (for example, swimming).
Saying "it's just numbers" ignores the historical content women weren't allowed to play when the game was named, or the inherent sexism in WHY its more popular
I think that maybe we are supposed to also examine why it is that the numbers are such. Why is it that there is a larger audience for Men’s sports? Do we perhaps have some internalized misogyny that sways the masses so?
@TheWaffleDad sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Sports that emphasize power over technique are probably going to naturally draw more interest when its males. Honestly I think calling it internalized mysogyny is just needlessly provoking people. Humans gravitate to familiarity. It's just what people are used to because people like what they are used to. Not giving different stuff a chance is not a moral marker. You like what you like for whatever reason but that doesn't mean it's not valid to have a preference.
@@trevinbeattie4888 I agree that complete equality should be the goal, but some people are trying to disregard ANYTHING done by males, which is just a backward way of looking at it.

Personal, I would love to have a longer version of this video
I really wish there was a reading list it feels like 12 min was not long enough
Give us a full fledged Crash Course Sex, Sexuality and Gender! We need a full episodes on abortion, on “what is a woman”, on gendered language.
I want the full episode!!!
What did you wanna talk about Lucy and from then until Mary Wollstonecraft??
I wanna know!!! What are you holding back from us!!!

Would also love that full episode tbqh! Lots of different ideas to talk about tbqh. Could even make a podcast out of it.
This series is actually so good
Inequality among the genders hurts all genders (to different extents), directly and indirectly.
I’m surprised how much they’re able to fit into 12 minutes!
Way more succinct than most university professors.
That's an essential part of Crash Course videos, and Political Theory is one amazing exemplar of their incredibly successful explainer videos style!!

Thank you for your hard work and acknowledging it in comparison to contemporary questions on the subject
I appreciate Crash Course being willing to create educational videos on topics even when it's likely to pull in the trolls. Well done, brava!

This is my favorite Crash Course Political Theory video so far. 💚📚 💜
Let's hope this comments section stay civil lol
I'll return in a few hours... with popcorn
I mean it's crash course I imagine the ones who want to learn will be here and the ones who want to talk mess will not even click lol

Wow. CrashCourse citing Habermas.
I'm pleasantly surprised! Nice!

I found funny that the two current aired courses are each about the two common things you should not talk about in public. Religion and Politics. LOL

thank you for all you do ...

Ah, the oldest argument in the book
I LOVE WOMEN!!! WOMEN NUMERO UNO!!!
2 minutes ago is crazy. Also, I like the idea of equal genders, but I feel like modern feminism sometimes take it too far.
How can equality be taken too far? Anything other than complete equality is discriminatory to some degree.
The loudest voices are always the extreme ones. Most people don't agree with extremist views of any kind.
What, in that context, does "too equal" mean?
