There is just something exquisite about watching Makarova dance whether is at class or on stage. Her technique and line are impeccable as is her phrasing of the music. A body made for dancing without gimmicks and tricks. Everything about her then and even now is mesmerizing. What I would call a true lyrical dancer and prima ballerina.Her series "Ballerina" was videoed in the 80's and I now have it on DVD. I greatly treasure it.
Seeing Makarova again reminds me of how much I loved her dancing back in the day. I was, and still am!, so envious of her beautiful, absolutely perfect technique and body. Thank goodness younger people who never had the opportunity to see her dance can learn about her now.
this is the importance of technique as precision. the idea of which is to approach basically as fundamentals. breathing through movement, relaxing the body to produce lyricism of movement. beautiful!
Wow! Even with todays legs flying to the heavens and rubber- like flexibility she is still magnificent. And Makarova criticizing herself... It reminds me of the stories about Fred Astaire and his dancing. Where everyone else saw perfection, he only saw things that needed more rehersal. What lurks in the minds of geniuses!
Two specifics: I remember Natasha referring to Ivan Nagy as a "wonderful partner," and I also read that when Baryshnikov defected she had hopes that maybe they could form some kind of a permanent professional partnership, but I guess Mischa wanted to follow his own star, so it didn't happen. A matchless ballerina.
@dianalb81 You don't have to be born with those abilities, I mean, yes it helps to be naturally flexibile, but if you work hard from a young age then to be honest the sky's your limit, unless you really do have no musicality. However, I've been doing ballet since I was 3 years old and I don't think I'll ever be as good as her *sigh*
She herself was indeed made for ballet... but tell me this, who is her male equivelent? Who was her best partner? What boy dared to even come close to rivaling this girl? Anyone... ?
the battlement/kick into the knee was just exquitely done I have to say....bringing her extention forwad...yes control...well shes zodiac sign scorp wth lots of Taurus opposite....so she saying that would be very appropriate in a sense
Sweet Gods in Heaven, the term "prima ballerina absolutta" was practically coined specifically for this woman. She was and is the greatest there ever was, is or will ever be. Greater even than Dame Margot Fonteyn. Than fellow native Russians Godunov, Nureyev and Baryshnikov. She can't be human. No mortal could ever be this flawless. Michael Baryshnikov was her partner for a long time, they looked amazing together.
