+geoff lucado Thank you so much. I'm going after it every day. Please check out my new videos and let me know if there's anything you'd like me to post? I'm trying to be original.
+Nathan Sletner will do brotha. I got mad respect for your style. keep killin it. I liked and followed the links you posted down below and I'll be on the lookout for anything else you put out.
This is my absolute first thing I'm learning and it actually seems like a pretty solid exercise. I'm amazed there's even any lessons for my favorite drummer at all let alone ones that seem possible for me to try. Thanks
Zach Hill is one of the most complex drummer's I've seen in my LIFE. Kudos man, you do know your shit. If you're learning his fills or licks, you'll be going places. keep it up bro.
Also, I hope you don't let any of the negative comments discourage you. Post of video of planting the tree, and someone's gonna have something shitty to say about it. As far as I can tell, this is the only video of it's kind out there, so it's much appreciated!
Thanks man. I want to post a bunch more videos soon, but my cameras battery charge is missing. I'll be doing some high quality stuff very soon though. Thanks for the support.
Nah man, I really appreciate this. Even listening to him as much as I do, I can't discern the majority of his licks because he down-tunes his toms so much that it's really hard to differentiate between them and his bass drum (which I'm sure is at least partially deliberate, though I doubt they'd stay tuned anyway with him going all 'Hulk smash!' on them constantly). Same with his cymbals, he plays so fast on them that, especially with the ride/crash patterns, it gets all washed out. Keep it up!
damn man. you are very inspiring to me as a drummer. zach hill is one of my favorite drummers. i've watched your other vids and enjoy them a great deal. you should post more!! maybe i'll post my vids and you can tell me how much i suck! ha!!
hi Nathan, i like the video. it made me think outside the box. as a drummer you get so locked into your own shit licks.. this made me think in other ways. its nice to learn something new or at least get my brain into a different dimension. thanks man. FYI My fav drummers: neil peart, Nicko McBrain, dave lombardo, phil collins, john bonham, john stanier, jay lane, zach hill, damon che, jerry fuchs, Andee Connors, and jon cook.
good skills man, and very good analyzation of his technique. i understand what you're doing, people just wanna be blind ass fans and say that you're copying him...but he's got cool shit, so you use him as an influence. nothing wrong with that. electric wizard would've never been around without black sabbath, and no one would be around if not for the rolling stones. keep up the good work, and keep helping out people who want to learn.
Zach Hill is definately awesome, but this made me think that some of the more detailed licks he has would work a bit better for my taste in a slower tempo. But in my opinion, he's doing that on Death Grips. which I've been obsessed for a while. But dude. great lesson, made me appericiate Hill even more than I used to!
@TeddyBearIsRed Thanks bud. I'm really glad you liked this video. I figured it would be a good idea since I haven't seen anyone breakdown his licks at all on youtube, or anywhere else for that matter. If you mean just how to get stronger legs in general, do squats and deadlifts with proper form and stretch a lot...and of course, play a ton of drums. :D
@Marleyaagaard I learned by listening mostly. I have a program to slow down the track that was useful for the cafeteria bananas lick. Gotta do both though.
@Nateytracks thanks.....now if only i had his right foot, i'm stuck in the habit of twisting it side to side rapidly...it is so hard....the most helpful video was jojo mayers, is there a certain pedal that is best for this technique, i think i may just need a new pedal cause it like drops very slightly, but if i'm doing that technique the pedal bounces up and it goes slightly higher than it is when it's stationary, so it kinda wobbles between the stationary height and the maximum bounce!
......i was feeling so confident. feeling so good that i could actually do this......then you sped up the cadence, and made me sad. it was then that i realized, "there are only few people in this world like zach hill. brian chippendale is one, chris penny is another and this may by that fourth". then i put my drums away.
Just that Les Claypool actually manages to do that beat almost solely on the bass guitar. Come to think about it, a band that would have both Zach Hill and Les would be fuckin' insane.
Sweet video man! I’ve been practicing the first one but having a hard time with the double foot part, did you practice with a metronome going or did you just do it without one?
While these licks are interesting in terms of technicality, I just don't get the buzz about Hill's drumming. It requires a ton of stamina and finesse, but it's typically centered around speed and accuracy. This definitely needs tons of practice, so props to him anyway. Maybe it's just not my thing.
+Devin Mulvey You'd don't necessarily have to enjoy the music he is a part of to appreciate his mind for drumming. The way he thinks about drums is totally different from other drummers. He's unique and worthy of study, even if you dislike his ideas, you should be able to find something innovative in him.
Where would you direct me to for learning how to generally play math rock drums? I've been playing for about 7 years and I'm 17, and I've been listening to Don Caballero, Hella, Chon, and a few other math rock artists for a while, but just can't get the general style down.
do NOT fret, man. if you have enough time and energy, just play it every day... start at that first speed, and inch a little faster every day. I guarantee you can play this if you just keep at it.
@xxxslayerxxx666 I'd rather not make another Zach Hill lick video, but I'll break it down for you. BsBBSbSBBrBr That's the pattern in the second half of the bar with the double strokes. 's' is a grace note, while the 'S' is the accent. B obvious is bass drum and 'r' is rest. Have at it. :D
i'm not a drummer, just a Zach Hill fan. sweet video.
duuuude right on you murdered it with that set up. you're goin places my man.
+Nathan Sletner some Thomas Pridgen would be badass too. he's super technical but super talented as well.
i always come back to this video it's such a classic
What’s wild is, this is the only video of mine that’s ever done any kind of numbers.
I like this dude's style for some reason.
Hah, thanks dude. Check out some of my newer videos. I've come a heck of a long way since making this, and I have tons I can't wait to improve on.
Will do, mate! Keep on challenging us haha
This is literally Zach's setup during the nldw tour (minus the high hat of course)
who needs hihats anyway
i give you major props for even considering attempting trying to analyze zach hill's drumming.
Damn when is this from? 1980's? Louis CK looks so young here.
Damn in a year a lot of things change. Haha I don’t think he likes being called Louis Fap K haha
Hahahahahaaha
nah no sperm on the high hat
Nice try, Zach, but we know this is your channel
Baran Kayim hi from three years in the future. I also love Zach Hill and the Ziggurat
nice ziggurat pfp dude
Lmfao just another person here to mention the ziggurat pfp, have a good one
Zach here, this guy is good but not me
Zach Hill is so creative with his licks, it's so great. Awesome video.
Also, I hope you don't let any of the negative comments discourage you. Post of video of planting the tree, and someone's gonna have something shitty to say about it. As far as I can tell, this is the only video of it's kind out there, so it's much appreciated!

Zach here, keep it up man
Thanks Zach
Thank you, Zach. Very cool
Zach here as well, thanks man
You actually kinda LOOK like Zach Hill
Ryan Heiss The me from this time was doing that intentionally.
Actually, in 2011 I was riding that same train. Except it was long hair Zach Hill. So I guess we we're doing the same thing.
This you could make a video showing off some death grips beats? full moon or world of dogs in particular
nice video! you have a calming and solid way of presenting yourself while staying focused, its easy to follow you, gj
Sick job! Not many people out there making an effort to recreate, or respect his style.
Best of luck to your musical future!
i was surprised in a positive way. good job man.
Dude, I laugh every time I read this. You just won.
Never heard of Zach Hill before, but those are some nice licks, Thanks :)
damn man. you are very inspiring to me as a drummer. zach hill is one of my favorite drummers. i've watched your other vids and enjoy them a great deal. you should post more!! maybe i'll post my vids and you can tell me how much i suck! ha!!

Nice i'm gonna learn these licks .. Zach Hill FTW! Good job and i like your snare bro..
Hey wow, this is awesome man. I’m trying to learn even though with my position in life I can’t get behind a kit for at least another year.
I highly recommend a practice pad and pillows. It's what I practice on every day, since I live in an apartment.
this was sexy, my dude. i dig the little changes you made with that last lick
Those drums sound sick wtf
Zach Hill is definately awesome, but this made me think that some of the more detailed licks he has would work a bit better for my taste in a slower tempo. I may eventually. Hopefully if/when I do, people won't think I'm pretending to be Zach Hill.
@Marleyaagaard I learned by listening mostly. I have a program to slow down the track that was useful for the cafeteria bananas lick. Gotta do both though.

great video, i like your couch
It was a comfortable couch.
Thanks for the movie. It's inspiring and I think you play good.
......i was feeling so confident. feeling so good that i could actually do this......then you sped up the cadence, and made me sad. it was then that i realized, "there are only few people in this world like zach hill. brian chippendale is one, chris penny is another and this may by that fourth". then i put my drums away.
0:56 sounds a lot like the Primus song "My Name is Mud"
Just that Les Claypool actually manages to do that beat almost solely on the bass guitar. Come to think about it, a band that would have both Zach Hill and Les would be fuckin' insane.
Giraffeman Did you know that they did a song together?
Nathan Sletner
Are you shitting me?? Please please please link or give me a title or explain or something omg
/watch?v=3noqxi9Xsuw les on bass
Lemmy Kilmister

Thx from Denmark
Nice Shorts
nicely done.
thank you zachary hill
@Nateytracks youre welcome! would you mind breaking other songs down as well? e.g. from the new marnie stern record?
Pretty good job dude. Keep grinding bud
holy shit this was 9 years ago
@nondor13 Thank you sir.
So ironical to say have fun when I could barely manage with what was going on! :D
Yeah ! great lesson :)
cool man!
Sweet video man! I’ve been practicing the first one but having a hard time with the double foot part, did you practice with a metronome going or did you just do it without one?
I didn’t use a metronome much back then. I do now.
@Nateytracks do you think you can try figuring out dark art from his band zach hill, just the first beat? i'm terrible at picking up the doubles!
for whatever reason you remind me of Michael Gira
Well, is he a bad ass? He sure looks like he is.
Nathan Sletner he is
are you not wearing ear protection?
NOIDED
Voided
@@tophat4489 you can't viod the noid.
please do more of these
Great job, man. Can we have some more?
Yes. Have you been watching my new videos? If you have something you'd like specifically, I may be able to help.
Holy shit Nate this has over 100k
Yeah, but most of it is hate, and I never got another video to pop off like this one. Oh well. 😅
Hate? Really??
@@logrammmudmurd Yep. People had a hard accepting that those were actual licks Zach used.
Noice
Lol. Have fun!
How many zach hill licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
"If anyone's interested in those"
*Is the most viewed video on his channel by a long shot*
Michael Kim How did you get into my laboratory?
@Nateytracks ok! id be happy about anything ;)
There’s no way we’re in the same grade💀
This video was awesome man. I never even thought of trying to deconstruct that fucker! I feel like taking that shit right on now. Cheers.
nice.

I vote this man gets inducted into the Hall of Mad Chops.
Hey man, can you please do another video that shows some of Zach Hill's licks?
+Андрей Гаджиев I've been asked that so many times at this point...so...yes. :) I'll do it.
ohh yess!!! I'm a self-taught beginner drummer and I'd really love to try out some interesting licks
1:33 "Zach Hill" say it again. say it some more.
Step One: You can't
can you do more zach hill licks
@nicouh Wow. Thank you so much.
Zing! :D Awesome video; haters gon hate!

Well, I do lessons...
Fucking A brilliant. THANK YOU
awesome stool
lol. i haven't, and won't ever. this is just.....so complex. i practice every day, though. only way you can.
Great, thanks!
Daniel Suleymanov I do what I can.
@manneres No sir. Just breaking down the idea and letting everyone take it from there. :)
@nicouh I don't plan to break down songs at this point, but maybe someday. I just like handing out tid-bits. :D
do NOT fret, man. if you have enough time and energy, just play it every day... start at that first speed, and inch a little faster every day. I guarantee you can play this if you just keep at it.
Didn't know that Louie C.K loved drumming
this is great dude
Thank you so much! I seriously appreciate it. Would you like more lessons like this, or more videos with just playing?
something about timing out drums that deliberately is like nails on a chalkboard for me tho
Same goes for your comment. :)
Hahaha you're freaking fast!
@Naytah Hahaha. Nice. Seriously though, he's beastly, but he's still just a dedicated human being.
i wonder if zach hill has ever watched this
@xxxslayerxxx666 I'd rather not make another Zach Hill lick video, but I'll break it down for you.

good vid though
Dude good looks on sharing this man, zach hill is fucking hard. Thanks for this!
is the first one from post ivy league depression?
I believe he does it in Women of the 90s.
@philjes1 You really like me that much? Thank you.
Are you telling us to "just copy it" to "promote creativity" ?
@yahyahyahcool1 A bit.
Bad ass!!!
