  • Are you that guy? Do you manually override values in a parts list to type in different units? LISTEN, STOP! This is how you do it. Use a proper length unit parameter instead of quantity the proper way, it will show up correctly in both your drawing parts list and Bill of Materials.

Please, do a tutorial on how to set up automatic filename and part number creation for custom profiles (structural shapes) so that they include the size and length parameters that are selected or typed in when they're placed from the content center or using the frame design tool.

Your tutorials are great. I've been using Inventor professionally for over 10 years. I only use a fraction of the tools available to me.
I find your style of instruction easy to follow and very enjoyable too. Well done.
Glad there was no background music. I find that distracting.
    Thank you very much.

Thanks Jim! Most people didn't like the music, some people did, I used it to make the videos less drab as before I started doing vids all the CAD tutorials were silent or had a monotone American, so I wanted them to feel atmospheric. But indeed it was a distraction and on some poor quality speakers the music became overpowering.

They had overridden the parts list to not use the default settings. Following your instructions I have a clearer understanding of the way it works which makes it easier to spot what's going on when they " Dabble " with it. . . . Thanks Neil.. . . Jim

Mate, to let you know... I've learnt Inventor completely through your videos and a lot of fannying about...
    Really appreciate it.

Hi Neil, Watched this a few times now. Just came back and watched it again. Someone at work created a drawing of an assembly with some parts created with the frame generator. The parts list has been formatted to show mm in the qty column. That's fine except some of the parts are not lengths but but number of parts and they show as mm. I think using your tutorial I can go back in an correct it. Thanks.

Nice video! Have you ever thought about creating more time lapse videos, such as the one you did while building the BMW Wheel? I really enjoy those!

Great video. I only found this out recently but good to see it as a refresher. Why does the BOM window always come up so small? It's like it is sized for a monitor from 15 years ago.

Top tip. Never had the time to get my head around BOM and cut lists. Would love if there was a way for the BOM to tell you how many lengths of stock were required. for example a table frame made in 40 mm box iron using frame generator, knowing a stock length is 6m. What's the min amount of lengths needed to be ordered to achieve all the cuts. would save a lot of time for pricing jobs and ordering materials. I wonder is this possible with ilogic?Anyway keep up the good work.

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  7 лет назад

Yea I don't think Inventor will ever do that, they have to make a distinction between what Inventor is for and what other systems are for, stock management is handled by a companies dedicated stock handling program like an ERP package. If Inventor could do things like that, people could then begin to ask why it doesn't then physically raise PO's and where does it end! But you're right someone could probably work that out with a bit of custom iLogic code.

Useful video - thanks. OK, I have item length, the sum of lengths, item mass and sum of masses, how can you get the parts list to add up all the sums of both lengths and the total of the masses to give you an absute total of lengths and mass. I need a total length of say all the 12" pipe and the total weight of all the parts. Please, this would be useful.... also.... when exporting BOM to excel it exports length and mass as text, how can you get inventor to export them as numeric values not text. Thanks.

This is fantastic one. I really like it.
    I have query below
How can we add the A/R (As required) instead of qty -1 ?
Note: It shouldn't edit in part list or blue column!

    Hi.
Tank you for all the great videos you hafe done, it has helpt my a lot.
Can you show how to get rid of all zeros in part list. Because when I put some part into a assembly from content center I always got the "length,000 mm" in part list. Is there a way around it with out effecting other part in the partlist?
    Regards Stefán

    Hello TFI.
Thank you very much for all your wery well explained video, very good job.
I've tried (without sucess) to find how to make automaticaly a sort by part number for example, each time I create a BOM.
I have to do it manually each by editing the BOM, so it's a bit annoying...
Do you know a trick to automate the sort each time I add a new BOM ?
    Thank you

How could I remove the “m” from the QTY column on the BOM?? On my companies drawings we have a separate column for the units.

  • @nathanbug24

    Hello,
Is there any reason you did not type in "d2" for the equation for the length. By doing that if you updated the length in the part it would then update the Parts list automatically.
    Thank you

How do you input something like like this in BOM of a sheet metal assembly for each sheet metal part:
column value -> AREA OF RAW MATERIAL: 400x152 (Length x Width)

Thanks for the video is very good.. I was wondering if there is a way to display several values in one cell in the BOM, let's say.. instead of showing 1/2" I want to show A x B; A would be my thickness and B my width and I would me getting them from my parameters list.. I do not want to multiply them, I just want to show them.
    Thank you!

Hello! Great video. I hope you can help me. Let's say that I have a rather big assembly with a lot of components, so that, I cannot point every single item in one page, and I need to create two pages of the SAME assembly using view levels. If I balloon-mark only three items and use the " only ballooned items" to create table, I get a 3 item table, right?. Now, moving to the next page, If I mark some other three different items and create a table using the same options, I will get two tables with six items, each. And I have to "turn off" the visibility on the unwanted items (table rows). Is there a way to get a table showing what I want without the need to manually turn off rows in every single page? It gets very annoying when making a drawing with many items and many pages. Excuse my English and the very-specific-lengthy question :D. Hope I made myself clear. Thanks a lot, and again, GREAT video!!...

When I'm working on a big assembly and I want to show only some parts on one drawing and the rest of the parts on another drawing. How do I make only some parts visible for the one drawing and then make the other parts visible on the next drawing?

Hello, can you do a video about step and iges files, import and export. Thank in advance.

Hey - that would be possible. What difficulty do you have with import & export of those files?

The differences between the types, and also what to use in what situation. Also, what file is meant to share with others without showing too much. Thanks for the quick response.

Thanks!! now how to i multiply that length to a cost per foot. Seems like a easy one, rofl. We will be heros if we can figure this out. Now i have been designing for 30 plus years, extrusions are purchased per pound or foot, how come inventor does not have this default column, inventor calculates pounds and linear ft for you in frame generator. now come on 20 years of inventor and everyone wanting this and no cost column for frame generator, its embarrassing. Ok i feel better.
