I'm surprised you missed Yema (France) whose Spationaute watches went to space in 1982, 1985 and 1988. From their website: "In 1982 a French Spaceman, Jean-Loup Chrétien, flew from the Baikonour base for a 10-day trip into space. On his wrist, he wears the very first French watch in outer space, the Yema Spationaute 1. In 1985 the Discovery shuttle takes off with on board Patrick Baudry and his Yema Spationaute II for the first Franco-American orbital flight mission. In 1988, Jean-Loup Chrétien visits the Mir Orbital Station with his Yema Spationaute III."
When I learned of the Bulova Mood watch I had to have one, and I do.Love it, keeps incredibly accurate time, only changed with the twice yearly time zone change: usually less than 8 seconds off the NIST atomic clock.
That “Bulova” was a Universal Geneve with a Bulova logo. Omar Bradley was president of Bulova ,who owned UG at that time, and tried to pass a UG off as an American Watch. They wanted to get the Gov contact. NASA didn’t fall for it. Also, look closely at Pete Conrad’s wrists in the pictures taken after recovery from his Gemini mission. Left wrist, Speedmaster. Right wrist, Glycine Airman. Jet pilots of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s loved them.
Had a Speedmaster 1861 moonwatch but i prefer my GShock GMWB5000 solar which is the metal version of the 5600. I believe a solar watch would benefit Astronauts without having to wind or worry about battery life
Kind of a "coincidence", that the crystal came off of the Omega, which was worn by the one astronaut, which conveniently had another watch specifically made for and given to him, by another watch company, Bulova!
Speedmaster plexiglass also blew on Apollo 16 Charlie Duke's Speedmaster chronograph... it was reported in the Apollo 16 lunar spacewalk mission report !
Indeed, it was a huge coincidence. Also, wearing watches outside the bulky astronaut suit, on such a tight space as the lunar module, it would be easy to hit the watch on some hard corner.
Suspect or not, I still like, and want to get one of the Bulova Lunar Pilot watches, since it's an order of magnitude more affordable than any Omega Speedmaster and still has that tie to a watch that did work on the moon. Being able to own something even distantly related to the achievements made in the Apollo missions just makes my space nerd side giddy. Probably will grab one of the listed Casio G-Shocks too, no shame in having a borderline unkillable watch, had too many "fitness trackers" and a "Smart watch" that couldn't even withstand daily use, let alone rough handling at far higher prices
Glycine Airman really needed to be on the list. A True 24 hour dial watch. The first true multiple time zone watch ,G.M.T., real historical significance
I just ordered a Glycine, that is similar to the one exposed to open space during Gemini 11. It is a white dial version of the Airman, worn by Pete Conrad during Gemini 5 and 11.
November 1973 William Pogue wore Seiko 6139, first automatic chronograph in space while in October 1985 Reinhard Furrer wore Sinn 141 Black as first automatic chronometer in space...
2020 we now know that astronaut Gerald Carr also wore an automatic chronograph on Skylab-4 ... a Movado Datron, so the title goes to both Movado & Seiko #Moonwatchuniverse
Great video and list. I own 5 of the watches listed and hope to get more in the future. At the end of your video you mention private companies and what watches they may use. I own a Luminox Automatic Chrono that was licensed by a private company called Xcor Aerospace... they are now defunct but hey, it's still a very cool watch and has a space theme. :)
"A famous Soviet cosmonaut G.M. Grechko owned the Vostok Amphibia watch and in 1975 they traveled with him in space on Soyuz-17 and the space station Salyut-4." -Bosdoks Website
Omega flightmaster? Ironically worn by a Russiam astronaut on the Space Lab. Great vid. Also worthy of mention, the Fiyta, (Chinese Taikonaut wore) had a size around 54mm.
It's grouped with the Speedmaster Professional at number seven. It's a completely different watch, so it should get its own place; but it is mentioned in the video.
I know it's just a joke, but astronauts actually never ate freeze dried ice cream, that's just a marketing thing. In fact, these days astronauts actually mostly eat food that's off the shelf from any grocery store, but passes tests for longevity, cooking methods, cleanup, smell, etc.
Falta el reloj de la primera mujer cosmonauta, Valentina Tereshkova . Tal vez haya sido Штурманские" (Sturmanskie -> Navegador), producido por la Primera Fábrica de Relojes de Moscú (futura "Полет" - Poljot). :)
I would not say that a negative display is an update. As a negative display will never be as easy to read as the positive version of the same model. And especially for an astronaut, efficiency will be more important than "but it looks cool".
When Helmut Sinn still owned it a few were . Since the inception of SUG ( Sinn’s casemaker ) in 1999 the vast majority of dials say “ Made in Germany “ .
IN THE LAST 70S OR EARLY 80S THERE WAS A TIMEX COMMERCIAN WHERE THEY PUT A TIMEX ON THE GLOVED WRIST OF AN APOLLO ASTRONAUT, AND THEN THEY DID THE FAMOUS WALK DOWN THE HALL. I HAVE YET TO FIND WHERE A TIMEX WAS OFFICIALLY PUT ON THE WRIST OF AN ASTRONAUT. A LITTLE HELP PLKEASE IF THEY ACTIUALLY DID.
Fortis developed the Spacematic ar (all risks) and have them to the Gemini crews. In their literature Fortis states at least one went up on a mission. I have not been able to confirm which mission it was or who wore it. Looking at numerous NASA photos it is common to see astronauts wearing a watch on each wrist.
Ph MWU I had just about come to that conclusion. Fortis is doing a time honored Swiss watchmaking trick - fluffing up their history. They claim NASA astronauts wore the Fortis Spacematic all risks during training and at least one was worn on a mission. Fortis May have developed the AR and given them to the Gemini astronauts. That gave them a small truth to expand on with creative marketing. At least their link to Roscosmos is legitimate.
Yes, at least an honorable mentioned for the accutron should be on the list. The X-15 pilots wore Accutron Astronauts and got space wings awarded for mission flights. Also, accutron was used for mission clocks onboard the Saturn V moon missions.
10:06 imaging that you’re alone in space.. look down at your watch and it says, “DIE, 13”.
😱😱

Sturmanskie chronograph deserves to be on the list IMHO
Love my Casio G-Shock and Seiko watches. Nice video Sir.

You can’t beat a G-shock. Well you beat the hell out of it that’s fine, the durability is ridiculous.

Robert, thanks for the comment. Your watch history is superb.

A Glycine Airman was worn in space by NASA astronaut Pete Conrad. The flight was Gemini 5, on 29 August 1965.

@@phmwu7368 Good to know. I humbly plead guilty of being too cynical.
you definitely will not hear of this in Omega's marketing ;)

Vostok Amphibian went to space on the wrist of cosmonaut Georgy Gretchko in seventies.

What about the vostok amphibia watch worn one off the soviet astronounts

How did you miss the Vostok Amphibia??
Omega flightmaster? Ironically worn by a Russiam astronaut on the Space Lab. Great vid. Also worthy of mention, the Fiyta, (Chinese Taikonaut wore) had a size around 54mm.
Well the first wrist watch in space was a sovjet Pobeda. It was on board with Mushka, one of the dogs send to orbit 1960.

On a D2 mission also a Tutima Nato Chronograph - ( German Airforce Issue ) was used ...
What about the Omega X-33?
It's grouped with the Speedmaster Professional at number seven. It's a completely different watch, so it should get its own place; but it is mentioned in the video.
I was in space with a Seiko only a few years ago. You can really good stuff in those Amsterdam coffee shops. 🙃...excellent video!!
I hope that you can get back into orbit after the lock down is over 🤪

3:57 Leonov.
Rolex GMT master! In 1971 Edgar D. Mitchell wore a ref 1675 on the Apollo 14 mission.
LEONOV , not Lenov. ffs
Cool video :-). Yema Spationaute of course!
Good video but you missed one. Jack Swigert used his Rolex GMT Master on Apollo 13.
Interesting video. Thanks .
I don't recall the mission, and am pretty sure that a US Astronaut wore a Heuer Chronograph early on in the days of space travel. Great vid; Thanks!
John Glenn
The US Military and NASA use UTC/Zulu time. Not the time zone at their home port.

8:18 that's not correct... furthermore what about the Rolex watches that flew in space in April 1970, January 1971 and December 1972 ?
Great!! Thanks!!
Thanks for watching Charlie!

Yes, an 1st automatic Seiko 6139 !
Good video but you forget the omega FOIS and the Douglas WT. 🧐
You forgot the g shock g9000
Anyone know why the Sinn shown has "Swiss made" on the dial instead of made In Germany? Did Sinn at one time have a Swiss factory?

FORTIS never flew a watch on NASA Gemini missions. In 2019, Fortis celebrated 25 years in the Russian manned space program. #MoonwatchUniverse

For 500 $ you get only a Pogue with many aftermarket parts , no genuine 100 percent original !
They have really gone up in price. You could get a decent one for 300 a couple of years ago
Imagine walking into church wearing a watch that says "Sinn"
