Motorola RAZR+ Review: The Flip Phone You Don't Need To Open

  • Small phones are dead. The iPhone mini is done for; Sony's Xperia Compact is long gone; and even the Pixel A-series is a fairly big 6-inch candybar. Unless you want to import something like a Unihertz Jelly, the age of the miniature phone is over.
    That is ... unless you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior, the Hinge.
    Yes, it's foldable time again - and Motorola's new Razr+ is the very definition of the best of both worlds: it's a clamshell flip phone that lets you spread out on a big 6.9-inch screen, then fold that screen in half to produce a phone that fits in almost any pocket.
    "Sure," you're saying, "but so what? Flip foldables have been doing that for years." Well, the thing that sets the Razr+ apart is how much it can do ... without you ever needing to open it.

    [ABOUT MRMOBILE'S MOTOROLA RAZR+ REVIEW/RAZR PLUS REVIEW]
    This video was produced following two weeks with a Motorola RAZR+ review unit provided by Motorola. Pre-production device running pre-release software.
    In exchange for early content capture with the RAZR+ and a one-hour exclusive head-start on the review embargo, MrMobile provided Motorola with his first impressions of the device several weeks ago.
    However, Motorola did not receive any feedback after review devices were seeded; the company is seeing this review at the same time as the general audience. No payment was provided and Motorola had no editorial input or copy approval rights concerning this review.

It's the clear passion of the subject he's talking about, the fluency of his speech, the balance of using a rich vocabulary and being easily understood by the average viewer, the interjections between different sections, the on-point short clips that perfectly display the current sentence in video form, and many other factors that combine to make a video that is both entertaining and informative.

    I honestly think phones will keep trending in this direction. Flip phones didn't go away because people didn't like them, they went away because we couldn't fold our smartphones. The future is definitely in form factors that can change in size. Once Apple gets onboard it'll become the default mainstream style and we'll get to see even faster improvements from the likes of Samsung and Motorola.

      @@MuciatnehThat was the past. In 2007, the technology was barely there to even make touchscreen phones. So I feel like in 2024, Steve Jobs would be all for foldable smartphones. But I feel like it would’ve been a much different approach compared to Samsung. I know Steve Jobs would’ve still kept the iPhone Mini line up, because he was all for lightness and portability. And some people still beg for that, because these new phones are insanely massive and heavy.

      Foldables like the Z Fold 4 are the headline for a reason. They actually solve a problem aka they serve a purpose.
      Clamshell foldable phones are COOL and FUN but they don't solve a problem. They're just regular slab phones that can fold in half to become twice as thick. You're not getting a bigger screen in your pocket. They're basically smart make-up mirrors for females which is why females love the Z Flip so much.

      @@TheMrMobile I think it's funny that with non-folding smartphones, we want larger camera sensors (= better photos+video) and thus a phone thickness of (0.32-0.34) but with a folding phone we want the opposite, we want it to be slimmer, (because it doubles the thickness when it's a foldable), so I'm hoping for when I get my 1st folding phone, it has a balance of what is feasible to put in a folding phone, but with great optics and photo quality. Just a thought.

    Excellent review. Even though I've never used one personally, I think the problem with outer screens on many recent flip phones really never been the size but how you've been allowed to use whatever space the outer screen had. With far too many of the limitations feeling artificial, not being able to read messages and sending to anyone of your contacts are a few quite frankly baffeling ones.

Never had a lot of issues due to the small chip, choppy pics or crease on screen, was way less than any Samsung foldable. I really miss the hinge, which help me hold the phone without smudging the screen, create a small cave with my hand which resonated more volume towards me. I'm interested in the new + model. Seeing how on hold calls are hung when closing the screen may be related to settings glitch, really hope the camera gets updates to fix those little details. I will have to wait till I get mine. Hey, that cell reception thing you did in there? Even if it's just a 5 second segment in every video, let's keep that. Especially with all the problems that people have had (including myself) with the Tensor G1 and G2 from the new Pixels. For whatever reason, in all these mobile phone reviews on the internet....we never really take a look at signal strength.
    As always, great review.

      I'd say if you already have a big screen mobile device, flip style is the way to go. But, if you don't have one and want a "do everything device, then a good fold phone should be cool as heck

    • @greensabr200
      @greensabr200 10 месяцев назад +2

      @awsxedc3 I have the fold 4 currently, but the more usable outer display and all of the pixel features with their fold is really tempting. On the other hand, the flip 5 is going to be considerably cheaper, and a unique experience. I only really consume media on my phone, I'm not a big multitasker. I'm gonna wait and see how the flip is before deciding on any of these 3 or just deciding to stick it out with my current phone for another year

    • @superiortoall22

      The first two manufactures have experience in the foldable department. Google has a bad track record with 1st gen stuff also the Tensor G2 is pretty bad with battery efficiency and the Pixel is touted as the slowest charging phone series’s, so probably wait for the Pixel Fold to hit the bargain bin (I don’t see it holding its value well) or wait for second gen.

    • @greensabr200
      @greensabr200 10 месяцев назад +1

      @superiortoall22 I had the pixel 6 pro and that was dogshit but I've heard better things about the tensor g2. Google has had years to observe the competition making foldables so I don't think the pixel fold will be as bad as the 6 pro was

    Tempted to get the RAZR, but going to wait until the Z Flip5 is officially announced before deciding. It's expected to also have a big front screen, the teardrop fold design, plus a Snapdragon Gen 2 processor and adapted Google apps especially for the Flip5 front screen. Also hoping Samsung feels the heat from the Razr and drops the price to $899 for preorders.

    Totally agree that this is for people who want a small phone. I get annoyed when reviewers compare the flip and fold. Theyre completely different markets. The folding phones are for people who would take a whole desktop computer with them if they could. Flips are for people who want a phone that can fit in a small pocket without losing any screen size.
