We can all agree that Kratos only wants to be a good father for Atreus and all, but it kinda hits differently when Kratos believes his days are becoming limited before Ragnarök. So he's trying to spend as much time with his own son as possible before his prophesized end because he fears to leave Atreus alone in the world when there was still so much for him to teach his son and so much to do that he'd never have the chance to do if he waited too long

Atreus' mocap actor did really well
After Kratos yells at Atreus saying to not lie to him again you can see Atreus flinch and blink. 0:18 Then you can see Atreus clenching and moving around his jaw to pacify himself since he's in a stressed situation. You can also see he's kind of swaying side to side and moving around a lot because he's most definitely stressed and it's a pacifying movement and he's trying to steady himself and find his footing. Later in the conversation he steadys himself when he talks back.
Also throughout this entire encounter each time Kratos raises his voices or grabs him Atreus flinches and looks scared but when Atreus gains confidences and talks back he stops these pacifying behaviors.

The only time we witnessed it in this game was through a single punch against Thor. Which is a blessing. If Kratos's true rage came out, he know he'd have the power to change landscapes and destroy the land like before, which is what he literally is avoiding. He took it easy on everyone in this game... Because he wants to be better than what he was. What a brilliant game.

Nah, it was definitely his old rage. Case and point: the moment he starters to choke out Heimdall - Heimdall looks him in the eyes with his power of foresight. One word then seals everything:
      *”Monster”*
He presumedly saw Kratos back in his prime, during his most brutal kills in the franchise. @@chickbowdrie4750
Kratos didn’t directly tear apart the land and drown the citizens of Greece, those were merely byproducts of him killing the deities.
His fight against Poseidon in particular was rather anticlimactic compared to the actual battle with the Hippocampus. He merely beat Poseidon down, gouged his eyes out, and then tossed him off a cliff.
Hades? He slammed him against the ceiling using his own talons, after ripping a few chunks out of him. He then stole his soul.
Heracles? Beat his face in after tearing apart his armor.
Helios? Curb stomped and then decapitated.
You’re over conflating Kratos rage with his slaughter of the Greek Pantheon. Kratos killed gods which then caused the nation to be demolished, he didn’t directly do so with his bare hands. The gods he killed, the ones that were responsible for holding the world together are the reasoning for the nation being demolished.
Heimdall’s death was exceedingly reminiscent of his GOW III kills, straight down to the excessive brutality before finally killing him. That brutality is what characterizes Kratos rage, which he himself reflects on in his Codex entries. He states that Thor, unlike Balder craves the bloodlust of battle - craving the fight as opposed to the causing pain like his brother. Kratos mirrors Balder in this sense, as his old self was brutality personified - he didn’t seek to kill quickly, he made sure it was slow and painful for those that got in his way. Just look at his kill on Theseus in GOW II, he slams his head into the doorframe *excessively* before finally ending him, unnecessary brutality towards the foe in his wake. The only people he kills without said brutality would be Athena - as it was accidental, and Prometheus, who wanted to die _and_ hated Zeus, much like he did.
Kratos by the end of his conflict with Heimdall even states that he found satisfaction in killing him, which mirrors his sentiments towards the end of the game, where he states that everything comes back to vengeance for him - which he later turns his back on in favor of justice.
This kill against Heimdall was about as old Kratos he was going to get. He slams the young god into the ground face and back first several times before going to choke him to death. He looks Heimdall directly in the eyes, teeth gritting as he kills him. He even slaps his arms away so that Heimdall can’t retaliate until it’s too late.
It shakes him to his core just how much he regressed in that one moment. He was so caught up in his rage struggled to pick up Gallahorn, and refuses to respond to Mimir, only grunting. He even stares as his handiwork, taking a moment to come to terms that he lost control - again. Not dissimilarly like how he behaved in the previous games (as we can see him do the same behaviors after killing the Hel guardian in GOW PS4), and moreover how he acted in his early life with Faye as seen in the flashbacks. Her pet name for him was grumbles for crying out loud, a trait he would spend a majority of his new life attempting to not do - as it was a behavior he came into due to how he mouthed off during his previous ventures as the God of War. This fight was him literally regressing in progress, giving into his rage for just a moment.
Actually show some evidence to the contrary and analyze the events of the franchise instead of repeating the same unsubstantiated claim of “he demolished an entire country”, which in itself is a misleading statement.
      That’s poor analysis.

No. But being overprotective can be just as bad. Gotta find that balance. Even Mimir says that he’s gotta let the boy breathe or he’ll chase him away. Also, it’s implied that all they ever do is train. During a side mission in Alfheim, Atreus seemed genuinely shocked that Kratos just wanted to spend time with him. No training. Couple that by the fact that even when Kratos does what Atreus wants he still is very doubtful and critical about him, Atreus wants to impress his father but the man is not impressed at the slightest, Can you imagine? Atreus adores his father and this whole giant/realm saving thing is motivated by Atreus wanting to be someone Kratos would he proud of, yet his father complains all the time that he’s putting himself in danger and what not, Atreus might come off as annoying or complaining all the time, but put yourself in his shoes, wouldn’t you also be exasperated for having a Father that 90% of the time doesn’t even believe in you or have confidence in your abilities or independence?
