Anthony and Drew, that was a awesome collab. Anthony, dude, I’m 39 and have been playing for 20 ish years off and on. The last couple years I have tried to train and get better. You have inspired me greatly. Thank you. Drew, thank you as well.
I’ve been at Bodanza’s distance for about a year now, and this series has finally spoken to me in a way I understand. The “feels” you describe to Anthony are exactly what I have needed, and I have already achieved similar progress as Bodanza just from using these tips.
Gift him a big discount for Christmas and get together for a part two along the road. These series highlight the best in both of you! Really enjoyed the journey.
Uh, I’m sure Drew hooked it up already with this series, all things considered. Bodanza basically went to disc golf camp- flew in, lived with the guy, trained with him for 5 days, and even had some home cooked meals thrown in! All on like 3 days notice… I’m sure what ever Drew charged was plenty generous enough.
There are normally four stages of competence as you learn a new thing: Unconscious incompetent, Conscious incompetent, Conscious competent, and Unconscious competent. However, I think there are two more which need to be added in my view: Conscious Expert, and Unconscious Expert. Why? Because these two extra stages decide whether or not a person can (or can't!) be an effective teacher. It is certainly true that extremely physically talented players will progress directly from "Unconscious competent" to "Unconscious expert" without ever passing through the "Conscious expert" phase - and these people are incapable of teaching anyone anything, because they literally have no idea what it is they do to achieve their success. A great example of this is Paul McBeth, whose teaching style boils down to, "Watch what I do, and do it like me." Whereas, players who work hard to pass through the "Conscious expert" phase must develop a fundamental understanding of their own form, in order to progress it. And so it is ONLY these players who are able to become good teachers of the sport - especially at the top end of the game. Drew - I think you are a player who worked hard to make your way through the "Conscious expert" phase.
I couldn’t agree more with you Drew, my dad was a country club pro and when he taught me he would always say don’t worry about distance until your golf swing was correct. He was right and so are you. I loved hearing old men say “I can’t believe a little skinny kid like you can out drive me”. Thanks Drew and Bodanza, get series!
Was cool seeing this Collab, it's ironic that this series started right as I was considering getting some coaching to help my disc game. Maybe its a sign haha. Keep up the good work man the good content.
It was all very in depth and extremely informative. I can totally see someone being obsession with distance getting in the way. I also agree with the Feel statement. When the timing is correct you feel it no matter how far you are trying to drive the disc. Thanks for letting everyone in on your training sessions.
This is Bodanza's "Hamburg Crucible". Same as the Beatles playing a pile of shows in Hamburg night after night to perfect their craft and setting up their launchpad before they rocketed onto the international scene.
Enjoyed the series. I got into the form journey myself over the summer recording myself a lot and making changes. It definitely takes a lot of practice to make lasting changes. Took me years to build a good ball golf swing, no different with disc golf.
I love how honest you are about people's game. Constructive with encouragement in all the right places. Great and helpful content from both you. Nice work boys!
Thank you both for sharing these videos! It has been a real eye opener for me being able to see the changes needed from both of your perspectives! watched some of the videos and checked out overthrows review of it. i took the mental cue of keeping my feet parallel onto the course and had a big improvement to my consistency. the course is a very scoring course but i threw more park jobs in both of the rounds than i have on easier courses. something like 60% birdie rate. so i appreciated you guys getting together and sharing the time together for others to use as a platform for form discussion. you have more of an impact than you know.

The process of that series and the time you two spent together was excellent. You two had almost conflicting personalities, though, which was also fun. I hope there is a 6 month or 1-year check-in video that is a follow-up. I would love more content like this. Thank you both again!
I’ve been in the same boat as Anthony. Playing three years, throw 420-430 consistently, 450 on a mash and my absolute max has been 471/72/74. I’ve been changing up my form doing a couple small things one thing at a time. It’s slowly working but I really enjoyed you talking about the “feel” of it. You see a lot of these bigger form guys and they talk about the mechanics of it, and I totally respect the ability to be a coach. But sometimes the “feel” of it is a huge deal as well. Like sure there’s a lot of mechanics involved but at a certain point you seem to have to have faith that your body will figure it out as well.
This is such a good video; your outlook and review of the sessions is what a ton of people need to hear. Expectations need to be realistic, and you need to be okay with where you're at and understand that it doesn't come overnight but will come with the right work ethic and mindset. Thanks!

Meeting, observing and playing with a great athlete is definitely a big way to be influenced and expedite growth. You guys are awesome! Its a solid series. Now that my tournament season has ended i intend to try to improve my form. If the distance comes that's great but its not my main goal. Im 47 and will be able to retire at 53. I want to be able to play more tournaments at that point and not be worn down and ready for a nap after my rounds are over. Haha
I’m don’t think you directly answered the questions infered by your video title: What did you expect from coaching and what did you actually get? But, I think we got the gist of it from what you said. It’s good you understand Anthony and you clearly like him. His videos, while generally good, make me crazy becauase he talks fast and doesn’t stop talking, saying things that are not needed. It’s like there is no filter, he’s just thinking aloud. The same is pretty much true when he was being coached. Not to say he shouldn’t ask questions, but he would do better by listening more and focusing on what you had to say. You were so good to listen to him and try to respond to his concerns and then bring the conversation back to what you were trying to teach. Your maintaining focus is why you were able to help him improve. In looking at the other comments, many others think you helped them, too. And that is a big positive. Well done, Drew.
With filming my form it almost always breaks down when i go out to play a round as opposed to when I’m throwing into my net. Still need to take a deeper look into why 🤔. It would be nice to be able to translate my good net form to the field more as Anthony was looking to do.
One of the hardest things to coach is for someone to essentially eat shit for a bit to ramp it up later. They wanna push to hard to quick. Just gotta slow down and get the control and slowly build the timing. It takes time to build that power and control it. Cant jump steps. Gotta get it solid.
lol I edited this 😂 400-430 consistent golf lines was generous but I def could throw it before, just had to count on a bit of luck with my timing hahah
I would recommend to throw more understable discs in to the tailwind, you can then throw more towards to up, and not getting early fade, because the disc still wants to turn over. In the tailwind a faster disc is harder to handle when comparing to putter or middlerange. Slower disc doesnt want to fall to the ground same way as the faster disc.
How much of an effect do you think altitude of CO or dry air of AZ has on distance? Think there’s a chance he would’ve hit 500 if you guys did this boot camp in Missouri or somewhere more humid?
@@DrewGibsonI tend to agree, altho I’m about as far from pro level as one can be. I have a son in Denver metro, I live in Houston… I really enjoy getting up there to visit and throw (love the high altitude courses), and discs do fly differently at my arm speed, but not really for distance more just shot shape. He’s a much better disc golfer than me, but when he comes down to the humid flatlands he remarks on the changes in shot shape as well - but just in pure distance he mostly doesn’t see much difference. Just needs to adjust stability choice a bit for a given shot shape. As for the form series, I mostly watch content from both of your channels (Bodanza’s and yours) as they’re some of the most engaging content out there. It true what u say u have to have a fell a throw. That result in your angle and form. I can get sometime in the zone but take alot of practice. Suck cause you can never be in the zone for so long.
I watched most of the videos and the point of your whole though process was don't worry I'll make what you have better and 500 feet will come by itself if you work on this in the manner I want you to go.
I think he is waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy to hard on himself and expects waaaaaaay to much of himself. I'm not saying it's bad to set goals and infact it's extremely inspiring and just overall amazing but I do think he expects to much. He's been playing for what maaaayyyyybe 2 years? I don't even think it's been that long and is already telling himself he plans to make the tour and win a mpo event?!!! While that's an amazing goal and is great that he has it people like him who expect to much of themselves scare me because I'm that SAME EXACT WAY and it's soooooo easy to get discouraged and beat yourself up and then get burned out. He's amazing for only playing for such a short period of time. It has taken me well over 10 years to even scratch the 500 foot mark so to see him getting close is amazing but I do worry he sets himself up for failure sadly. Although I can absolutely relate because I'm the same exact way and if anyone ever tells me that I almost get offended so I shouldn't really be saying anything 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
lol I relate to this comment because it's exactly how I'd react to someone who was like me. But I think you'll get that to me, the big goal isn't intimidated but exciting. I understand it could (and maybe should) be a years long process, but trying to expedite it is always fun, and will likely get me closer! (also to the MPO win point, peep a future vid, or just check my PDGA I guess ;) ) I understand my relationship to goals are different than many, and less of expectations than opportunities! Hope you feel a kindred spirit in that :)
@@BodanzaDiscGolf yeah I definitely understand all this lol. I can whole heartedly relate to everything you just said. You're definitely crushing it man and I'm very excited to see what comes of it! It's always exciting to see someone get so invested in something whatever it may be. Also I know the feeling of being truly intrigued by something and falling head first into. When u find something I love doing I'd say I go waaaaaaaaaay to overboard to the point where normally my girlfriend has to bring me back down to earth and make me calm down lol. But yeah man you're truly a joy to watch and I'm sure you're going to make something of this regardless of where the road takes you!
Here's what Drew doesn't understand Anthony comes from a different/covid disc golf generation. Where everyone worked on form critiques through social media form groups. Drew developed his form through competition.
Not knowing all the financial details, I’d say the foundation you gave him to build on could be priceless. I mean you get what you pay for right. I’d say he made a great investment 🤘🏻
He wants to throw 500 foot golf lines . I mean that's kinda rare isn't it ? I mean I know guys get that 500 with huge anhyzer flex shots. But straight bullets 500 plus for someone his size ? I dunno man. I think hes a talented young man that's probably gonna go on to do great things, but I think he's getting down on himself for an added 50 feet. He seems to think he absolutely needs that succeed. He's at a massive disadvantage because of his size and he wants to bomb like the 6 foot plus guys. Yeah that's gonna take more than a week with you. I'm not even sure how possible it all is to be honest.
Hot take: I think you should be able to throw 500+ ft if you want to coach someone else to do it. I've encountered and gotten "coaching" from several more experienced players who actually didn't have a clue what they were talking about. Each of them throw under 400ft. I now can hit 500+. There are a bunch of things that they were telling me that were just dead wrong. Too often people rely on "theoretical knowledge" instead of proven or experienced knowledge.Someone might think they know what perfect form looks like, but chances are if you're maxing a 350, you really don't.
I think asides from fine tuning his form, as a coach should, Bodanza should have spent a little more time doing those practice rounds with you at the pro level events. you're right that him putting the camera down was the best move he could do for himself, despite his whole youtube channel, because all of this form practice and relying on film is only going to set the habit that he cannot fix anything in the middle of a pro tour event without film, which is totally unrealistic.
Well I was trying to help Brodie with that video not help RUclips. Brodie was much less advanced at the time of that video so was harder to help him while also helping others.
i think the coaching was fundamentally flawed, i wouldve started with moving through the correct positions slowly rather than have him just mash until he got it right (and never did)
Was awesome to spend this week with you! Excited to continue working together through the off-season

500 Means nothing if you can’t control it.

(also to the MPO win point, peep a future vid, or just check my PDGA I guess ;) )
I understand my relationship to goals are different than many, and less of expectations than opportunities!
I totally agree! 🫡
Yeah not my place to talk about in reality. I just let most people think they know 😂
❤🤗
I think asides from fine tuning his form, as a coach should, Bodanza should have spent a little more time doing those practice rounds with you at the pro level events. you're right that him putting the camera down was the best move he could do for himself, despite his whole youtube channel, because all of this form practice and relying on film is only going to set the habit that he cannot fix anything in the middle of a pro tour event without film, which is totally unrealistic.
#GoodGuyDrew
Is this a diss video?!?!? Lol
No lmao surely not.
What the hell did you watch it he praised him the whole time
Lolz the pro tour don’t do him like that. I get you are trying to get his audience but come on man.
Huh?
To be fair that video with Brody was one of the least helpful form videos
Well I was trying to help Brodie with that video not help RUclips. Brodie was much less advanced at the time of that video so was harder to help him while also helping others.
i think the coaching was fundamentally flawed, i wouldve started with moving through the correct positions slowly rather than have him just mash until he got it right (and never did)
"Tell me you didn't watch the series without telling me you didn't watch the series"
@@InjuryPreventionGuy I guess I should sau I would've stopped him from over doing it lol
Oh weird where’s your video of you throwing 550
@nickhaines601 I did throw 550 once but it was a huge anhyzer turned over and flew down a hill
