Great job. This is better than 90% of pointing work out there. I'm a roofer, and I'm so sick of all the negativity and useless criticism in this industry. Thats why I work alone, with my own business.
Fellow tiler here from NZ. Decent finish mate not bad at all. Still blows my mind you guys need water over there to get a smooth finish. Must be the heat huh
If the same exact tile roof is at an elevation that receives a foot of snow on the roof during the winter time would you still recommend having weep holes on the ridge or would that be a water entry point for a roof with sitting snow on it?
In Australia only mate You can buy it at Bunnings Warehouse, mate. Selleys Point Work Advanced Formula Terracotta Colour. Dunlop 10L Roof Pointing Terracotta.
In my rented house I can see 2 thin lines of daylight both sides of these ridge tiles all along the roof and the loft is damp. Is it normal to see daylight next to the ridge tiles or has the cement disappeared?
If you can see sky in a direct line looking up, you have a problem - rain can definitely get in. There should however be weep holes (you can see these guys install them when re-pointing) which can let daylight in through holes. You have to determine which is the cause in your place. Best to get on roof and check if you can - if not possible flying a drone is useful and half the neighbourhood kids have them lol.
Beautiful work mate. I work on roofs everyday doing solar and roof maintenance (gutter cleaning, panels cleaning, solar bird proofing and minor roof repairs), don’t do much repointing at all but work around it and make small repairs sometimes. I would say the way you guys do it is only some by about 10% of roofers. So many roofs I work on are peeling from the top already when the pointing looks almost new. You can see underneath that the new stuff that the customer payed $3500 to get done is only 2mm thick with zero prep. It’s criminal. I guess that’s not surprising when anybody Is allowed to do it with no qualification or experience. As long as they don’t charge the customer more than $5000 per job they could be hiring a guy who has never stepped foot on a roof before. I saw that once haha. We hired a guy to fix a few broken tiles under the ridge and repoint and when he got up the first story roof he froze. Couldn’t climb the 8 foot ladder up to the second story. I had to go. Up and down it for him while he passed me stuff. This guy had a full van with all roofing and maintenance tools and long ladders and everything. Very odd. With the high demand for roofers these days many companies are saying no to a all jobs m, leaving a gap in the market which will be filled by unqualified guys with no experience. It’s just too much money to pass by if one is open to ripping off their customers and that’s a large proportion of tradies as you know. Luckily there are still plenty of customers who are willing to pair a fair price for good work. They way you guys do it may well actually save the customers money in the long run even if you are charging more than double.
thats not entirely true if the roof is 5k it requires a licensed personnel with anything over 3.3k past the handy man pricing so must have qualifications for it... its just that people don't check for tradies qualifications often, or fear of offending the tradie which i'm always happy to show
The day after Ridge caps have been Bedded or re/bedded you can lift the caps off with your finger tips. It doesn't hold the caps it is more a bed for them to sit on before the top coat is applied
@@jacobblack7841 lol that’s a hilarious response, I don’t know what sand cement ratio you use but you definitely shouldn’t be able to lift the ridge caps with your finger tips a day after bedding them in, to say they’re only bonded by the Flexi is an absolute joke, the ridges are BEDDED into the cement mix and should remain bonded for at least 20 years if the correct sand cement ratio is used
The water travels down the back of the bedding mortar and goes into a water course of the next adjoining tile on hips. Only the very to rodgecap of a hip is weepholed
Good to see quality tradesman doing a thorough job. There's too much laziness and greed creating poor service and results in all trades. Keep up the good work and all the best.
Very Neat , you have a lot of paperwork over there ,here in blighty roofers just show up and get on with it no question asked. Obviously complying with health and safety ie correct ladders ect
This is how cowboys point ridges in the UK and is classed as a very poor job.. need to take the old bed out or at least take the mortar back more to give the new mix more thickness and more to space to grip under the tile.. pointing is becoming less now anyway due to dry ridge systems which are far better
@@ETH85 I could understand that trying to repoint butted tiles would be considered lazy. I've never seen lapped ones supposedly from Britain before. I've also never seen a dry ridge system that I'm confident would stop wind blowing water up under the tiles and over the end of the half length tiles at the peak of my roof. The whole "tape is an adequate modern substitute for good building design of the past" also doesn't sit well with me either, if it weren't for those I'd ditch the mortar and go dry ridge too. Do you guys use flexible pointing? I could understand it being deemed not necessary with the relatively stationary ground you guys have up there.
No you idiot, re laying ridges and repointing are seperate jobs. Your rhinking about relaying when you can just as easily repoint them and does the same job
I can see you take pride in your work nice job the problem with roofers too many cowboys out there they just want to make as much money as they can ?? you can't see what they're doing when they're up there no I don't trust a lot of Roofer's because of this ??

Roof repointing is causing more harm than good. Rain water would back up into the interior should the cracks after some years. My 45 years-old roof does not have any pointing cement and there is no leak ever. Repainting the roof should be good enough to make it last longer, maybe 10 to 20 more years.
Licensed Roof Tiler here. Repointing is an important part of Roof maintenance. Flexible cement holds the ridgecaps and cut tiles in place and prevents ridges shifting or blowing off in heavy storms. Also, a 45 year old roof is not an old roof and you will likely end up with long term issues such a ridges slowly and making gaps. Aussie roofs come under fierce heat and flexible cement moves with the tiles as they expand when they get hotter Also, REPAINTING a roof does nothing to improve the roof or increase its lifespan, its 2 coats of paint, so it's purely cosmetic. No problem with that, but painting won't stop your ridgecaps blowing off the roof in a heavy storm, correctly applied roof pointing will.
I only grind if the cap is rough or if obviously the old pointing is wild. Just a pressure clean with a little electric cleaner suffices for prep

Why not just re-bed and point? You could see the ridges were no longer bonded to the original mortar it would last a lot longer
if the ridges arent moving I understand just repointing, but yea if it's pretty solid may as well just repoint it 👍🏼
