  • If you want to be left on the side of the road, then you should buy a BMW 550i with the notorious N63 engine.
    After we added the JB4 tune, the car ran great for a day, but then started to have issues. We found multiple misfires and noticed that the high-pressure fuel pumps were barely registering any fuel pressure. So, in this video we will be going through the parts that we are going to be installing and explaining why they are essential to fixing this BMW. Stay tuned! I imagine there will be more parts and money thrown at it shortly down the road!

    My 2011 550i original n63 with the 6 speed manual just got past 96k miles and with no repairs other than one leaky coolant hose which was a cheap fix. But so far it runs as smooth as glass and never failed me once. Just change oil with Motul full synthetic every 6k miles.

    Sorry to hear about your experience. I've owned a 2015 550xi with the N63TU for 4-1/2 years (bought it used) and it's been great. Mine is completely stock, and the power is ample, The original PCV lines crumbled after 5 years of cooking in the hot V, but they were replaced by BMW with redesigned parts under an extended warranty. The high-pressure fuel pumps are also covered by an extended warranty. Oil consumption has been minimal since switching to Liqui Moly oil. I would buy another one as long as fuel cost isn't an issue. I get about 18 mpg around town, and mid-20's on the highway, but if I drive it like a race car the mileage suffers accordingly.

    Bought a TU Variant (2014-2016) with 60k on the odometer. Now at 75,300 and so far had two issues. 1) Bank 1 HPFP. The second is partially my fault for not checking differential bushings, but my driveshaft destroyed the splines going into the diff when launching. Currently awaiting a replacement driveshaft. (BMW wants 1900, eBay got your back for about 15%-20% of that, thank god. But other than that, she’s been a pleasurable experience.

    Interesting project! I’ve had my ‘15 N63Tu for about 60K miles trouble free, but that may just be in my experience. I did have to DIY some rubber coolant lines near the turbochargers at a point in time, which is actually quite easy. I had a HPFP fail in one of the banks as well, but they were replaced under warranty. I’ve been tuned for about 30K miles at 580ish whp on just 93 octane from BM3, but I primarily use this car as my road trip car as I travel cross country for work, my daily is a 2020 X3 M40 which actually feels about similar in power stock per stock!

    I'm interested in getting a 2014 550i manual in the next year or so. Most likely it'll be completely stock and I dont plan on doing anything crazy with it besides an exhaust, intake, and wheels. Is there a list of things, like a top 5 or 10, that you would recommend to replace for preventative maintenance? I've been told and read that BMW likes to use a lot of plastic parts and as everyone knows, over time plastic becomes brittle and what not. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  Год назад +4

      first thing I'd do is start it cold and look for a puff of oil. secondly, take it for a drive and come to a stop in a parking lot, etc. wait about 10 minutes then stab the gas and watch for smoke. those are two tell-tale signs of valve stem seal issues.
      past that, I would replace the PCV system (tubes / diaphragm. whichever the year has) along with plugs, coils and run slightly thicker oil (5w40).
      past that, it's all basic maintenance and service. I'd bet a pre purchase inspection however to make sure the valve cover gaskets, upper and lower oil pans aren't leaking. etc. they're very hard to diagnose without a lift.
      hope this helps! a manual would be sweet!

      I can't think of many times I'd tell someone to buy one of these vehicles. 2012 is marginally better but you'd have to do you're due diligence ensuring its clean without issues. like valve stem seals, etc.

      @@tony.nextlevelrides, so is the 2012-2013 good years for the 550? Especially I love manuals only so I’m sure a 2011-2012 535i would probably be better of course ?

      @silvaunit7663 depends, both have cast cranks so not sure either is better. N55 for. most things would be easier to work on though.

      @@tony.nextlevelrides , so would it be safe to say the 2011-2012 335i would be a safer choice . I have talked to 335 guys who say the 335 is more reliable than the 550 650 and 750 . The biggest debate is between who is more reliable between Audi and bmw guy told me the 09-2011 s4 v6 was a good car possibly more reliable then the bmw that is always the debate that I look for honest opinions and not biased opinions. I had a 02 Saab 9-5 a couple of years ago 5 speed manual that was a great car didn’t give me any problems but I had to give it away unfortunately Saab was awesome cars possible more reliable than bmw that’s a debate

      we did! we happened to have a faulty JB4 somehow. it was great for the first day and some then for some reason started giving us issues.
      the car itself had its own set of issues but after this service, it wasn't that bad. we flashed xHP in the meantime but the owner found an e90 he really wanted and traded it.

    • @tony.nextlevelrides
      @tony.nextlevelrides  Год назад

      the valve stem seals are very weak on these engines and always dry up and harden with the turbos being up top and in the middle. when they harden they allow oil to get passed the seal, slip down the valve and burn inside the engine causing the smoke. it's a huge job to repair because the engine needs to come out.
      it could also be the PCV system in some cases. after changing the PCV on this car, most of the smoking stopped.

    • @jaybomb5022
      @jaybomb5022 Год назад

      The seals are only when starting the engine after resting it.
      DP's are naturally a little smokey, especially w/o a DP specific tune.
      Those fumes are what the Cats are cleaning up.
      My N63TU did this w/10k on a healthy motor and it worried me at first until I got it Dyno tuned.
      Now it smells raw but no more smoke, especially after accelerating harshly and slowing down when exiting the freeway.
      If you see a cloud of smoke when you start up, then you need seals.
