The one thing Katara did that really shocked Hama was that direct blocking move. It was not waterbending style at all, which involves flowing, pushing, pulling, and redirecting. Katara developed it from watching Toph's earthbending techniques; a solid, immovable stance.

What I always loved about this episide, is how masterfully it juggles the "Halloween TV special" tropes, by making us believe that nothing scary is actually going on, and the characters are just making it all up and being paranoid of the poor old woman.
So when we least expect it, brushing every scary vibe as "Nah, this is just a Halloween episide!", the reveal hits so much harder

    First, Happy Holidays Melon!
    Avatar Extras
    The Puppetmaster
Hama acquired her Inn years ago when its former owner mysteriously disappeared …
Hama is the only known southern waterbender in existence besides Katara. Hama was the last known waterbender in the village until Katara was born. That was almost 50 years without a waterbender at the South Pole. The Fire Nation took the waterbenders because they posed the biggest threat.
5:56 This is actually Kanna. Katara and Sokka’s grandmother. Hama and Kanna were friends.
Tress MacNeille, the voice of Hama, also voices Dot from the show Animaniacs as well as other prominent roles such as Daisy Duck.
10:14 This is an Owl Cat. You can tell by its distinctive meow-hoot.
This episode does a wonderful job of answering a question that many fans had since the beginning of the show. Since blood is made up of roughly 70 percent water why don’t waterbenders just use this method? Bloodbending is considered a dark form of waterbending and is sometimes referred to as the "puppetmaster technique". This episode is considered an Avatar Halloween story.
Fact: Those who practice this technique open themselves up to madness. In other words, they go crazy with power.
Bonus: the fire nation ship that you see Hama and the other waterbenders trapped in ice during this episode, is the same exact ship that Katara and Aang explored in the first episode of the series.

Out of all the main characters, Katara is by far the one most guided by her morals and principles. Had any of the others learned or been forced to use a similar ability, I suspect they would have been less distraught. So here are some spoiler buffers.
      Another one.
      Maybe enough.
      This should be enough.
Eh, another buffer line, just in case.
So part of why you can only Bloodbend under a full Moon is because to Bend you need to move your chi out of your body and still control it.
When the finale occurs and Spiritbending is explained, it's mentioned that to control the energy of another your own spirit must be unbendable.
So from these we can deduce that people have inherent control over their own chi. To overrule their control requires immense skill and power.
Controlling someone's blood or freezing the water in their brain would require similar levels of control and power.

      @thekamotodragon 9 месяцев назад +2

it all sounds op until you realize, lore-wise, they way they balanced it was that very few people are powerful enough to do something like that. Very few waterbenders can do bloodbending at all, and only during a full moon because it's like an ability that's at the absolute top limit of waterbending in terms of skill/power. Only a couple characters in the second series (won't spoil) are shown ever using bloodbending outside of a full moon, and that's only because of their inherited genetic traits that made them extremely, unusually strong waterbenders. So unless you win the genetic lottery and train for literally years and years, you aren't going to be able to "freeze someone's brain".

One of the really dark episodes of the show. Not many think highly of waterbending since unlike the other 3 elements water is not readily available, but this shows the dark potential of it, Hama’s story was also tragic being from the same tribe as Katara and Sokka who like them grew up constantly fighting the Fire Nation raids on their village slowly watching as her fellow waterbenders dwindled slowly then spending years as a prisoner of war. Its hard not to see why she developed her extremist views to the point she targeted innocent Fire Nation civilians. Katara also had it bad wanting to learn more from a southern waterbender only to be cursed with knowledge of an art she doesn’t want but had to use to save Sokka and Aang.

keep in mind, it took all of Katara's experience and journey to start tapping into all the water in the environment. Water that dwells in life, and expelled from her own body. Hama showed her more, but it still takes a deep understanding and practice to command....because the element is less abundant and more dispersed. Oftentimes in bending, concepts and knowing are half the battle, but its never a complete lightswitch effect. You've seen, it takes proper form and concentration to control the element. The more its done, the more effortless it "looks," but the principles still apply. It's true that a little water can become a deadly weapon, but even with all this, its still not Katara's style. Like, she won't be making ice nails on her fingers for example. Katara cuts and fashions weapons and attacks, but she essentially uses it as a tool

There's one other technique that you could theoretically use with waterbending that would be super OP, and nobody ever uses it as far as I know. Waterbenders are able to control the temperature and the state of water so that they can freeze and thaw it at will, right? So shouldn't it also be possible to heat water until it's scalding hot or make it turn into steam? With hot water and steam, you could replicate the effects of airbending and firebending, and with ice, you can replicate the effects of earthbending, so it seems really OP if steambending is possible. You could even replicate combustionbending (what Combustion Man does with his eye) by causing water to flash to steam and explode, which is how phreatic volcanic eruptions work.

    • @houseofaction

no none of that would be possible steam can explode but no where to the level of combustion bending and steam is not hot enough to replcate the effects of firebending and you couldn't replicate the effects of airbending by steam bending steam doesn't have the airpressure and would instantly rise

Honestly I don't see anything wrong with bloodbending. I mean, it can be used for wrong yes, like Hama did. You can kill with it or capture. But you can also stop people from fighting, which I think is good. As long as you have good intentions you can use it for good and that kinda applies to all bending.

And remember, blood bending is not an evil technique. Violating someone's free will or taking away someone's agency is not always an evil or unethical thing. Cops do it all the time when handcuffing or putting a criminal under arrest. This bending can come in handy for self-defense or defending others.
Also, I can say the same about carrying and using a gun for self-defense.
