Zuko's confrontation with Ozai, is one of my favorite moments in the show. Zuko finally rises up, and steps away from the path his cruel father set him on. He calls him out on his treatment of him, and the wrongs that their nation have committed, and vows to help the Avatar correct them both. And then we get the icing on the cake, when Zuko showed Ozai that he could've killed him right there if wanted to; since Ozai didn't know lightning could be redirected.
It's not unreasonable to think that some form of astronomers exist in this universe. They Mayan's were able to accurately predict celestial events hundreds of years in the future.
Yeah, predicting eclipses isn't super difficult, especially if you may be firebenders who fully know that eclipses take away your powers. They have had thousands of years to notice this stuff.
Of course, he is GENERAL Iroh- he would know the best time to invade the Fire Nation. Now, I'm guessing he didn't know, but took a guess, and that's why he planned his escape at that time- and invasion is a pretty good distraction.
I would imagine it's because he's so spiritual. He has access to information a lot of people don't. The air nomads were the most spiritual people, and they've been wiped out, and the Avatar has been gone for a long time. The human connection to the spirit world is basically gone, meaning if Iroh (before Aang's return) was the most spiritual person, it's safe to assume he has a LOT of knowledge others don't, considering he's been to the spirit realm.
Since i dont think someone mentioned it yet, i guess this time ill get to be guy that points something out. Ming, the guard who is nice to Iroh, is voiced by the literal GOAT of womens tennis Serena Williams. She contacted them in the hopes to get a small role because she loved the first two seasons.
Neat detail: The Duke gives Toph his helmet to throw up in, then when the surface he's washing it out. Little details like that makes the show a touch better than anything else.
The Earth King told Azula and I assume after taking over Ba Sing Se she got full access to detailed plans and all the dates and everything. Maybe when she captured Katara actually. She was carrying the plans that needed Earth King approval at the time.
Ozai was 1000% ordered to kill Zuko so he would know the pain of losing a son, but he's a sociopath so he wouldn't have felt anything and Zuko's mother knew that and decided to intervene
The Dai li earthbenders are very formidable. They are some of the best earthbenders in the entire earth Kingdom. Alone, toph can handle them easily, but working together, they are crazy good.
Toph fought dozens of them simultaneously in previous season. Now she is even stronger, but, this time Dai Li agents didn't try to fight with her. They dodge, run away, and were as well protected by Azula's taunt ability as she was protected from eathbending by them.
@alarichrul6639 That's also a factor. But I'd like for you to also watch her previous fights with the Dai Li again. She only fought 3 or 4 of them at any one time, and they did not go down easily. She constantly had others helping her, and the Dai li got the advantage on her multiple times. They have never been fodder compared to her, especially when they were in 2 or more. We also can't rely solely on what we have seen prior in the show. This means that just because we see toph get stronger and learning, it does not mean the Dai li have not also learned and improved significantly. Toph's main source of growth has been her training with metalbending. Not regular earthbending. So, while she is still the greatest earthbender, her only real improvement is on her expanding her bending to a new element. The Dai li improved their earthbending and tactics. And yes, it helped that their goal was distraction and evasion. But just because we see toph's journey doesn't mean you believe no other character has grown in the background. The Dai Li have always been a good fight for Toph.
everyone is always angry and hurt with zuko's decision at the end of season 2, myself included, but he had to make the wrong choice there so he could make the right one here when it had more weight. in ba sing se zuko had nothing and would have mostly just been following his uncle. here he had everything he always thought he wanted and decided to sacrifice everything to do the right thing.
And a lot of people say that him choosing to side with azula was unrealistic, and I disagree. Imagine being presented with the opportunity of finally achieving what you’ve wanted for more than 3 years. By this point in the story, Zuko had only been good for like some days and maximum a week. You truly think that the work done in less than a week is enough for you not to want to go back to what you’ve always wanted? It’s like the people that start going to the gym all hyped and by the end of the week they’re out. Zuko’s decision was the most realistic, especially when what he would obtain by choosing to side with Azula were things that is humans value a lot: love from loved ones, appreciation, honor, and a life with privileges. If anything Zuko’s choice in ba sing se made more sense than him siding with Aang. It also is the best decision form a narrative standpoint since it adds another level of complexity to the psychology Zuko’s character.

Him after years of hunting for "honor" being presented with this should be quite tempting. Second what i love in this scene is that it is not rage, like it is often presented. He had to think and make plans, he is talking with his emotion in check and making this decision out of logic. He didnt just burst of or acted being pushed to the corner, he made that choice with full understanding of consequences. Also it is hard to see that your only parent is a monster and you would do a lot for love. He needed more time with his father after his time with Iroh to see that it is wrong. So I felt bad that he went with Azula I never "hated" or saw it as "bad writing/behawior out of character"
For no good reason I assumed that this video was just the first part. I was so happy to see that it was both episodes. Zuko confronting his father is amazing. Zuko could not turn against the Fire Nation in Season 2, because he still didn't understand how wrong Ozai and the Fire Nation were. Zuko confronting his father is one of the most satisfying story developments I've ever seen.
For clarification, Zuko isn't a Lightningbender. He used the technique that Iroh taught him to redirect lightning. It's too bad he never does become a Lightningbender though. He could probably do it if he tried now that he's more emotionally stable.
I always figured that if a nation's security depends on the position of the sun and moon, they'd probably get pretty good at astronomy. They likely knew the eclipse was coming way before Team Avatar ever found out.
I love how Ozai is so attuend to his element that he instantly knows when he can firebend again, even Azula only realises once she hears the explosions and she is a prodigy.
I agree that walking in knowing there is half a season after this two parter is a bad sign for our characters. Still such an emotionally brutal loss. I love Zack Tyler’s performance as Aang. Oh man what a two-parter! The Gaang’s plan is executed so well, but because Azula knew about it, the first part ends in a gut-wrenching cliffhanger! And part two ends on a somber note… But no entirely without hope. Zuko confronting his father is still one of the best scenes in the show to this day.
So Zukos mom. Ozai told his father, Azulon, that he should be made firelord because his brother, Iroh, was devastated about the death of his son. And Iroh chose to abandon his would-be victory in Ba Sing Se. So Azulon told Ozai to kill his son. Azula wasn’t lying about that. Ozai then convinced Ursa that instead of, she should kill Azulon to save Zuko. And we know Ursa would’ve done anything to save Zuko. So she visited Zuko in the night to say goodbye and went to kill Azulon and fled. With Iroh gone, Ozai was made the firelord. He stole the throne from Iroh who was next in line. Ozai doesn’t care for family so long as it brings him power

It's kind of insane how important Sokka was for the war effort. His impact was arguably comparable to Aang's The dude literally invented air travel and submarines Also, this episode really brings it home that they're in a war: they go into battle not knowing if they'll die or not (we know they don't because Nickelodeon, but they don't know that) and not knowing what their world looks like after the battle (if they survive), then most of them are POWs by the end of it. That scene where Aang thanks the soldiers for their bravery before leaving is devastating. The fact that they managed to deliver the gut punch of the gaang getting completely defeated for the second time in a row (season 2 end and then day of black sun) in a Nickelodeon show is also amazing, the writers trusted the viewers to be able to handle the hero going down repeatedly without any pay off in between and it benefited the show so much.
when Sokka the rest went the Library the fire nation had been there and burned away all information about themselves they probably learned about eclipse before they left the fire nation part of the library in ruins

And just when you think all hope is lost--it's just been one terrible moment after terrible moment-- Zuko leaves to join the Avatar, leaving a glimpse of hope for their future. Though I consider the season 2 finale the empire strikes back of the series, many people consider this episode as the most crippling to our characters and so much greatness destroyed. Overall the perfect halfway point for the season. Bonus: Fact -This episode marks the closest anyone has ever come to taking down the Fire Nation.

The invasion of black sun is here, the invasion force is ready, the fire nation will be powerless for a few minutes and Aang and the gang and zuko are ready to face their destinies. The whole thing with Azula pisses me off. There's no way she can out run Aang who's has been shown and we have been told is supernaturally fast due to his airbending.
Azula was also very fast, and her agility is only second to Tai lee. It wasn't so much that she was faster, it's the fact that she kept evading and maneuvering in ways that made it difficult to catch up to her. The Dai li were also shifting the area around so that she always had perfect pivot points and places to leap from. Though Aang should have definitely been much faster, you also need to remember he was not in his right mind. He had one singular focus and Azula was just an obstacle. He wasn't thinking about the time he had left, so it wasn't much worry about how far she ran.
I honestly couldn't believe no one realized the fire nation knew they were coming. I mean Katara knew she spilled the beans to Azula and didn't think she would tell her father?
The Earth King spilled the beans about the invasion. Katara only told Azula about Zuko and Iroh being in Ba Sing Se. Though someone pointed out she was carrying a scroll with the invasion plans when she was captured. Though I think they might not’ve taken that into consideration since it isn’t brought up, and double checking when that happens, the plan scroll disappears when Ty Lee takes her down. It looks like she might’ve thrown it aside, but no attention is given to it. Other’s have pointed out the fire nation likely would have astronomers who could figure out the date, especially when they already had to deal with an eclipse at least once before. So even if the earth king didn’t supply the exact date, they could find out themselves, maybe even before they knew about the invasion
The invaders not at least concidering it a possibility in advance that the firebenders would now of the invasion, especially after they took ba sing se, its generals and the dai lee, or that they at least would know of the eclipse as a nation that depends on the sun for its main strength and take necessary precautions on such a day, is one of the few atla things that has never quite fully sit right with me.
Toph was dumbed down for sure during that fight with the agents and Azula. One of the sour spots of the whole show, really. But I think it only stands out because she's so f'n OP
You'll learn what happened to the ones that surrendered in a few episodes, but if i were the Fire Nation, i wouldn't be taking any prisoners... Let's see what they choose, shall we? 😈🔥🔥🔥

My guess is since the generals all got taken in the coup at ba sing se, Azula got to see the plans for the invasion that the earth king signed. That's the only way I figure she could know the date. But yeah, this season is incredible. I actually started watching the show live starting after the day of black sun and it was so incredible watching the second half of this season live. Things get upped hard from here

Book 1 Chapter 10 after Katara said Aang should be the leader of their group: Sokka: "Are you kidding? He's just a goofy kid!" This episode to Aang: Sokka: "What do you think? You're the one that has to face the Fire Lord. Whatever you decide, I'm with you." Just shows how Aang has grown enough to gain Sokka's respect and Sokka has built up enough confidence in Aang's own leadership and decision making that he's willing to let him decide the fate of the whole operation which was entirely Sokka's idea.

This 2-parter is probably the biggest battle the show has had, at least in the size of people and characters. Practically, everybody you've seen in the show comes together to try and take down the Fire Lord and every conceivable thing that can go wrong, goes wrong. And just when you think all hope is lost--it's just been one terrible moment after terrible moment-- Zuko leaves to join the Avatar, leaving a glimpse of hope for their future. Though I consider the season 2 finale the empire strikes back of the series, many people consider this episode as the most crippling to our characters and so much greatness destroyed. Overall the perfect halfway point for the season.
Bonus: Fact -This episode marks the closest anyone has ever come to taking down the Fire Nation.

The whole thing with Azula pisses me off. There's no way she can out run Aang who's has been shown and we have been told is supernaturally fast due to his airbending.

Azula was also very fast, and her agility is only second to Tai lee. It wasn't so much that she was faster, it's the fact that she kept evading and maneuvering in ways that made it difficult to catch up to her. The Dai li were also shifting the area around so that she always had perfect pivot points and places to leap from. Though Aang should have definitely been much faster, you also need to remember he was not in his right mind. He had one singular focus and Azula was just an obstacle. He wasn't thinking about the time he had left, so it wasn't much worry about how far she ran.

I honestly couldn't believe no one realized the fire nation knew they were coming. I mean Katara knew she spilled the beans to Azula and didn't think she would tell her father?
The Earth King spilled the beans about the invasion. Katara only told Azula about Zuko and Iroh being in Ba Sing Se.
Though someone pointed out she was carrying a scroll with the invasion plans when she was captured. Though I think they might not’ve taken that into consideration since it isn’t brought up, and double checking when that happens, the plan scroll disappears when Ty Lee takes her down. It looks like she might’ve thrown it aside, but no attention is given to it.
Other’s have pointed out the fire nation likely would have astronomers who could figure out the date, especially when they already had to deal with an eclipse at least once before. So even if the earth king didn’t supply the exact date, they could find out themselves, maybe even before they knew about the invasion

The invaders not at least concidering it a possibility in advance that the firebenders would now of the invasion, especially after they took ba sing se, its generals and the dai lee, or that they at least would know of the eclipse as a nation that depends on the sun for its main strength and take necessary precautions on such a day, is one of the few atla things that has never quite fully sit right with me.

My guess is since the generals all got taken in the coup at ba sing se, Azula got to see the plans for the invasion that the earth king signed. That's the only way I figure she could know the date. But yeah, this season is incredible. I actually started watching the show live starting after the day of black sun and it was so incredible watching the second half of this season live. Things get upped hard from here

This episode to Aang: Sokka: "What do you think? You're the one that has to face the Fire Lord. Whatever you decide, I'm with you."
Just shows how Aang has grown enough to gain Sokka's respect and Sokka has built up enough confidence in Aang's own leadership and decision making that he's willing to let him decide the fate of the whole operation which was entirely Sokka's idea.
