It doesn’t matter how many times I see it, the scene of Zuko and Iroh reuniting turns me into a tearbender, EVERY. TIME.
Can confirm. One of the Most Important lessons on forgiveness I've ever seen in film.
And, one of the strongest emotional bonding moments between parent and child.

It took me, like, watching this show three times to realize just how right Bumi was about Aang needing Momo with him.
Hey don't feel too bad. I only just noticed this year while rewatching "The King of Omashu" because Bumi said at the end that Aang would need his friends and he would need Momo too and it just hit me.

I think when Katara says "Goodbye, General Iroh." is an incredibly important moment for her and her growth. She has never once respected someone of the fire nation enough to call them by their rank, or anything other than just another monster, but here, she addresses Iroh by his full honorary title, she has overlooked her internal hatred for people in the fire nation to acknowledge Iroh as well as the fire nation with the utmost respect.
Damn never even noticed that bit. This show just get better on every rewatch

Facts. I like the resolution Aang found, and I like how it played out. It was within Aang’s character, felt sincere, & more importantly, the writers dropped hints about lion turtles in S2, so the story flowed well.
Yea but to be fair, self defense is a little different than killing someone premeditated. Kind of interesting he wasn't thinking of this during the invasion though.

Why do people care as if the fire lord was gonna directly die either way. They could have just defeating him by knocking him out or restraining
@@jefftonsman Ideally thats was what Aang wanted to do, but they weren't even 100% sure Aang could beat him. Harder to take someone as powerful as Ozai alive than kill them, especially when they're trying to kill you. Gotta remember, Aang didn't even think he could go into the avatar state.
I love Iroh's reasoning for if he did defeat Ozai it wouldn't end the war peacefully. That's why it gets me that people get pissed at Zuko for not taking out Ozai during the eclipse despite Azula being the first big hurdle as to why that wouldn't end the war. I love when there are perfect in universe reasons to counter the loud complaints people have with certain actions characters take.

I mean, they will build new colonies on the conquered land and cities and make it their own. Just like the ottoman empire did with Constantinople (they would probably do the same with Ba sing se), or how the USA or China expanded, or basically almost any nation on our earth came to be. And most likely kinda like The USA and Britain the colony would eventually turn out to be way more powerful, so it was actually a smart decision of Ozai.

Avatar Yangchen’s wisdom is the most interesting to me. She believes, as Aang does, that all life is sacred and that the taking of life is morally wrong. Yet she still counsels him that ending Ozai’s is necessary for the world to balance itself.
Despite popular opinion, a wrong can make a right. Being bound to one set of morals and ethics limits and constraints your actions, and becomes just another weapon to be used against you.
Perfect ideals are only achievable in a perfect fantasy. One should strive to be as moral as possible, but the real world is a complex, messy place, and you will eventually be forced into situations where you only have bad options. Choosing to do evil is not a sin if every other option was also evil. Abiding by an inflexible moral code is not justice if doing so makes you commit a greater evil than breaking it.
It's also interesting given that she, even as an Air Nomad, is still not on the same position as him from the perspective as being tue sole remnant of his culture. It's really interesting to to see the disconnect even though they share the same philosophies and upbringing.
I think that Aang has the hard stance against killing, because he was so young, and not fully trained as an Air Nomad. It is far easier to teach a child that all life is sacred and killing is wrong, then when they are older, teach them that there are exceptions. Rather than try to teach a child that there are times when killing is justified, or necessary. His old friend Monk Gyatso, killed many fire nation soldiers in defense of the temple.
Mind you, I am not complaining about how they wrote and set this story out. It was fantastic and I have no complaints.

23:15: Zutara was actually a really popular ship back in the day, so much so that the creators actually said a few less than nice things about the shippers who backed it. I guess these days it's either not so popular or at least not as loud.
The thing about Roku’s advice is it’s “Monday Morning Quarterbacking”. It’s based on pure hindsight.
Well yeah but its still true, he should have been more decisive. He had the resources to conquer the world and literally opened fire on Roku.

So Yangchen kinda proved that while the lessons Aang learned from Guru Pathik were helpful, the last chakra of giving up earthly attachments was not right for Aang. I think Pathik just knew a lot of air nomad stuff and made some assumptions that Aang would need the same thing but didn't actually know teachings for an Avatar (to be fair Yangchen was probably like 400 years before Aang so any air nomad Avatar teachings would probably have been hard to find). The Avatar cannot give up his earthly attachments because his whole duty is to the world.
Also none of the Avatars actually said Aang had to kill Ozai. Roku said be decisive, Kyoshi said only justice would bring peace, Kuruk said actively shape your own destiny and the destiny of the world, and Yangchen came the closest with do whatever it takes to protect the world.
Avatar has a motif of unconditional love and especially this season. In ep1 of this season you are shown the two sides of it when you see Katara and sokka with their dad. And the opposite side of that with Zuko and Azula with their dad cause the only way Zuko was accepted back into the fire Mario was under the condition of killing the avatar

I think the real reason Ozai appointed Azula as Firelord was because she was just crazy in the head. The betrayal between Mai and Ty Lee, frontal assault on Team Avatar at the Western Air Temple in broad daylight, and trying to kill Zuko on the spot. That would mean she lost her mind.

Avatar was one of the first animation shows, especially in the West, to have a shipping culture. The kataang vs zutara shipping wars were intense on the fan forums. The last few episodes have poked fun at that dynamic. Obviously, the Ember Island Players, but Toph bringing up Haru and Katara is another fanfic reference.
Dude, the campsite in the morning scene is a scene that isn't talked about as much as it should be. Starts out with a funny little gag (which I like to think was a small oopsie from Dante in the booth that they just decided to roll with), then judt turns into a masterclass of writing arcs and their payoff. Zuko finally learned what he needed to learn and heard what he needed to hear. We also get the payoff of The Southern Raiders, in which Katara came to accept him as a changed person, now resulting in them teaming up for their final effort. Sokka showcased that magnificent brain in determining his path, and Toph showed all she's learned about being a good teammate ("we'll be right there if he needs us!"). Also, notice that Iroh shows his wisdom and understanding of people so well, guiding Zuko and reassuring someone who has suffered and lost so much, while prompting Sokka to come up with a plan more independently. At the end you have them preparing with that soaring music and that absolutely flawless final line from Iroh. So much comes fill circle here with a little bit of everything we've come to love about this show and these characters.
God, I love this scene.

Sozin’s Comet Part 1 and Part 2
Alright, we made it!
First, I am glad for undertaking this journey with you Melon and sharing with you some interesting facts along the way.
Second, I hope that you enjoyed learning some Avatar Extras.
1:46 Snail-sloths are a cross between a snail and a sloth and are the Avatar World's slowest animal.
Fact: Aang, since he himself is also a firebender, will also have increased power during the comet.
5:00 The meeting took place in the episode, "Nightmares and Daydreams". But we never saw what happened during the meeting.
6:10 (6:58) a second genocide. Hence why Roku warned Aang all the way back in season one, to stop the fire lord BEFORE the comet arrives because even the Avatar would not be able to bring balance back to the world if the comet came.

The title of the second part of the Sozin’s Comet finale, “The Old Masters” has a double meaning: referring to the past avatars that Aang discusses during the episode as well as the members of the White Lotus that the rest of our main characters reunite with as well.
If you notice throughout Aang’s conversation with his past lives, none of them give him a straight answer. It showcases their experience and their understanding of how complex Aang’s position is and, though they are offering counsel to him, it’s his call to make since he is the Avatar. It’s also a nice criticism of their past actions as avatars as each of their advice is a product of their actions while they were alive (nobody’s perfect).
32:04 Zuko waits for Iroh to wake up even though he's anxious to apologize. The very first episode of the show ends with Zuko rudely ordering someone to wake up Iroh just to give news that could have waited anyway.

Bonus: the Lion Turtle is the oldest, most ancient creature in the Avatar World. The lion turtle possesses timeless wisdom and powerful, spiritual energy and we've actually seen images and heard about this animal previously in the series:
-In The Library Aang finds a drawing of one in an old book.
-General Song and General Fong both had pauldrons representing the head of a lion turtle, as did one of Aang's battle "options".
-In Ba Sing Se, Sokka and Aang stand near a sculpture of one at the Royal Palace.
-In Sokka's Master, Piandao's door knockers are Lion Turtle heads.
-Piandao tells sokka he has a heart "as big as a Lion Turtle",
-Lion Turtle statues are in Piandao's Rock Garden.
The creators drew inspiration for the lion turtle, in particular, while touring in Seoul to find the right animation studio to work on the test pilot. They recall seeing a turtle statue with an engraved monolith on its back, which stirred their childhood memories of Morla, the giant turtle in The Neverending Story, and the collective "World Turtle" myths they had encountered.

All right! Here we go! One of the best finales to any show in my opinion!
I wish that so many reactors wouldn’t fall into this trap and I finally figured out why I never did. You see, I’m talking about “killing the Firelord”. Everyone I watch react to this show goes along with it. As though they haven’t spent three seasons discovering who Aang IS as a person. Zuko is the one who brings it up; first at the end of ‘The Southern Raiders’ and again here in ‘The Phoenix King’. Everyone else just clamps onto it and goes for a ride. I think the reason reactors do this too is because they’re obsessed with Zuko and won’t question him/it. But killing the Firelord is the easy choice; not the RIGHT choice. Aang stays true to who he is and the world provides for his truth by sending him the lion-turtle. Even when his own past lives try to push him to do what he knows is morally wrong, he isn’t fully committed. I wish more people in this world would choose right over easy. 😢
I’d like to add that Aang didn’t want to kill the fire lord because of 2 reasons.
1: he’s just a kid, he still has that level of innocence and doenst want to compromise that
2: he is the only living member of his culture, and him killing someone would go against what they taught. Which it’s why it’s different for him compared to Yangchen, because he isn’t just the avatar, he’s the last airbender

There is a large following for Zutara but just as large for Aang and katara, people are just very passionate about one or the other haha. I’m firmly on the Zutara side, I think that katara is a better friend with Aang than romantic partner but each to their own 🤷🏼♀️

Zutara definitely has some great chemistry. But I’m team KatAang all the way
I was Kataang fan when i was younger and still believed in the "nice guy" trope.
But when i got older and some real life relationships experience, i "switched" to Zutara. It just makes more sense, both character wise and narrative wise. Nowadays im more indifferent, but i grew ever more doubtful of Aang + Katara.
The show just lacks any conclusion on how and why Katara and Aang ultimately got together. Literally the last conversion those two have is their argument about killing Ozai, and their last "romantic" moment is when Aang kissed Katara at the recap-episode without proper consent.
They never clear things up, Aang never apologises, they never talk about their true feelings.
The next thing what we see in the show is their final kiss at Iroh's tea shop.
From rejection to passionate kiss without ANY conversation in between.
Thats the core definition of "forced relationship conclusion".
Yes maybe they did have a conversation in between, but the show gives us nothing to prove that.
Zuko's and Kataras relationship on the other hand comes full circle after so many natural and believable up-and-downs, and their last moment before the finale is full of compassion and self-sacrifice.
But to be fair, im fine with Zuko and Katara not getting together.
I just think with all the show does (and does not) give us, Aang + Katara dosen't work as a couple.
The whole show she is more like an older sister for him, she never seems truly attracted to Aang *at all*. Katara just blushing because Aang did something cute or whatever also is not any kind of good "romantic development". If they had romantic progression, they would also have at least *one* serious conversation about their feelings. They only have one conversation where they finally talk about their feelings... at the Amber Island Players, where Katara rejects him (with the typical "im confused"-card that so many girls play when they want to reject a guy but are just too polite to say it directly). And how does Aang handle the rejection? He goes for a kiss with a girl who made it clear, that she is uncomfortable with the situation. Yes, what 14yo girl would not fall in love with a 12yo boy who behaves that way....
Even Sokkas and Yue's relationship had more progression in just 3 episodes, mainly because they actually talk about their feelings and their situation.
Everyone is completely free to ship whoever they want. I'd say thats even part of the fun of shipping. I also don't think anyone is "wrong" by shipping Aang + Katara, all i say is that the show does a really, really poor job establishing a believable relationship between them.
Yes Kataang is "canon", but that dosen't make their written relationship better - just official. "The Last Airbender" movie from M. Night Shyamalan also uses the official, legal rights of the Avatar universe and it dosen't make the movie an inch better than it is.
The romance is one of the very few flaws this show has. I really hope the Netflix adaptation will improve on this. Either by giving different, ships, or by improving on Aang + Kataras relationship with more believable moments and actual romantic progression. I would even be fine with romance being completely left out of that adaptation, they basically only "need" Sokkas romantic relationships if they wanna adapt as much of the OG story as possible.

Korra is okay, and I might be in the minority here, but Korra retcons a lot of stuff in avatar, specifically with bending origins, and I think it brings down ATLA because of it. There’s good moments forsure, but it’s a completely separate series

Thing about Avatar Yangchen (the airbender avatar)
She is the most DANGEROUS avatar in history. She invented the technique of draining entire rooms of air and suffocating people to the point of passing out. She COULD suck the air from peoples lungs and let them die. And she WOULD HAVE done it, if it were necessary to maintain balance, order and peace in the world.
She's DEFINITELY not the avatar to ask when it comes to advice on *not* killing a person.
Sadly, between Pirate Lords, War Lords and Dark spirits running amuck, she did not have much options for mercy in her time
And that lack of mercy caused the Face stealer to target the Avater in the next life
@@ladychrya9379 To be honest, if they decided to keep 'Legend of Whorra' canon, then the Avatar can actually harm the spirits, because of the backstory they give in season 2 of that vomitous ruin of an attempt at a continuity.
However, I am in full agreement with E;R on his opinions of THAT show, so take that comment how you will.
Personally, I would like to think that if the Avatar went into the Avatar State in the spirit realm, they would be able to fight in the spirit realm, and would easily be able to deal with spirits like Koh, but would have to consider the effects it would have on the world.
Regardless, the point still stands about Yangchen. Once she mastered her Bending and the Avatar state, she wanted to actively make more of a lasting impact on the world for the better. Koh's own reaction on the next Avatars wife was just the consequences, which the next avatar simply accepts as his own fault.

In LoK it's represented as those two Kite spirits. Just to name ONE contradiction.

@@ladychrya9379 Additionally, look at every single Avatar State as it's performed by other Avatar before Korra. For them it's EXTREMELY powerful. Creating an island by separating a part of the mainland. Reforming the lands themselves. Fighting Volcanoes and Nature itself. Then we get to every single time Aang himself goes into the Avatar state. *Nobody* stands a chance against him. The only time it is threatened is when Azula gets in her sneak attack. And even after that, when he goes into the state VS Ozai, he becomes an unstoppable force of nature.
For Korra? At best she just... Gets a power boost *up* to the enemies level she happens to be fighting at the time. And even then, she pretty much loses every single time.

Legend of Korra is so good too! If you’re apprehensive about it I’d suggest a break. I hated it without ever giving it a chance and ate my hatred when I watched it because it’s so friggin good! The people who do this animated avatar work at Nickelodeon give you their all putting genuine soul in their work and legend of Korra is another testament to that.
A lot of people don’t like korra for pretty fair reasons. I wouldn’t say it’s as good at the original, but you can never expect it to be. It’s very different from ATLA, and that’s fine that’s what the showrunners wanted. However, unlike ATLA, the show worked season by season. Meaning that with each new season they never knew if they were going to get another one. They never had a clear cut storyline to work through. Not to mention how season 2 of the show is arguably one of the worst season in the entire avatar series. And it doenst help how many believe the show “ruins the previous characters” and “contradicts the lore” ATLA established
