Pentatonix Recording of Evergreen gives you a great behind the scenes view of how they record in studio with Ben Bram. It's a must watch! In their earlier days they did a lot of their own arranging. There is more to it but my arthritic fingers aren't working to well on the keyboard today lol.

Disclosure and Naughty Boy are the artists for each song and they featured Sam Smith. They mashed up La La La and Latch. Latch is by Disclosure featuring Sam Smith. La La La is by Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith. It's absolutely amazing how they mash these two up perfectly. I had to go listen to both songs just to know when PTX was singing which song! Thank you for this reaction! They work with Ben Bram to arrange their songs, but I think they do a lot of it themselves. The distraction at the end is Superfruit's Photo Booth video. Hilarious! I vote for you to watch that one! No music, but just funny!

In this mash-up, not only is this arrangement another stellar example of the group's wizardry but it also highlights the ability of the trio to hit high notes with ease - even Scott, the baritone. And of course, you're right to give props to Avi and Kevin. Their bass and rhythm section provide the solid foundation that allows Scott, Mitch and Kirstie's vocals to soar.

Great reaction! They've worked with Ben Bram since the very beginning on arrangements. He and Scott met at college in Scott's freshman year. Ben is the one who encouraged Scott to try out for the Sing Off with Kirsten and Mitch. The rules changed and they needed 5 members and the rest is history. I think Ben worked on the show at the time. He's been called the 6th Pentatonix member.

Great reaction! They usually arrange their music themselves with the help from their talented friend and professional arranger Ben Bram. My entire family's all-time favorite from Pentatonix! When my youngest daughter was a Sophomore in high school her acapella choir sang this song. She auditioned for, and got, Kirstie's part! We were all so excited when they performed it for their spring concert! Pentatonix has been such an inspiration to kids and their instructors in acapella choirs over the years. They enbody innovation, talent and hard work!

There are lots of behind the scene videos and they discuss how they come up with the cover's and mashups. Usually, one of them brings a song to the group....then they collaborate on it, then they take the basic structure to their arranger - Ben Bram to help fine tune it and set it to sheet music. All of them have music theory backgrounds, some from college...others just high school but they all are talented and listen to different genres of music.

One of the reasons the Pentaholics recommend this one so much is because we love seeing Mitch and Scott switch places. However, Mitch never stays in that lower register for very long. We love it when he visits though.

As good as they are as individual vocalists (and they are truly phenomenal!), it’s what they do together that sets them apart. The background they all create together and on which they build the performance is unmatched. Rewind away if you need to, you won’t hear me complaining.

  • @perfectkismet
    @perfectkismet 2 года назад +16

I'm not sure if you figured it out... this was a mashup of the songs "La La La" and "Latch". One was originally by Disclosure ft. Sam Smith vocals and the other was Naughty Boys ft. Sam Smith.
Pentatonix does their own arrangements, often with their "sixth member" Ben Bram, but not always. I don't think there's any story floating around about this one, but New Rules x Are You That Somebody was Kevin's brainchild. The story says Scott heard him playing around with the mashup on his own and asked if they could do it for the group, so they then adapted it.
ALL of their mashups are amazing. Some of my very favorites of what they do. I wish they all had videos, but only about half do.

This is one of my absolute favorites. The way one song becomes the background for the other, over and over, is amazing. The way Mitch and Kirstin make their backgrounds sound electronic, Avi's nimble bass, Kevin's varied and on-point percussion, Scott at the top of his range but powerful even so. This is one of their most sophisticated arrangements. As others have noted, their more recent New Rules x Are You That Somebody is a similarly sophisticated arrangement and also fantastic.

Arranging. Recording of evergreen needs to be next!! That will answer all of your questions about that. Ben Bram known as the 6th member of Pentatonix helps them arrange the songs. He and Scott went to college together the one year Scott went before PTX was formed. But he is in the recording of evergreen (their most recent and 6th Christmas album) helping them arrange. You will see their recording process and arranging process. They did the whole album in two weeks. Ben, Kirstins bf, is their videographer and he did a great job filming it. Caveat: I can't remember if you have done "the prayer" yet but if you haven't you might want to do it first bc that will spoil it for you. You see them listening to the final mix of the prayer in the studio in the short film. I think it is sooo worth it and you will really enjoy it. Second caveat: please don't talk over any part of it bc you WILL MISS SOMETHING. Just pause it as much as you need to to talk. I have seen several reactors miss great things bc they were talking over it. If you want the link let me know.

I’ve listened to these so many times and I’ve tried to follow one members part from start to finish and it’s hard, but easier to see in their “evolution of..” videos. Love this mashup. Thanks; this doesn't get reacted to much. Pentatonix is known for their ability to do mashups and medleys combining various songs so smoothly that it's hard to tell where the transitions happen. It's something Scott and Mitch have been doing since high school. You've reacted to Daft Punk and most (all?) of their evolutions. Other good mashups you haven't done -- "New Rules x Are You That Somebody" and "Butter x Dynamite". My favorite is "Despacito x Shape of You" but it's only audio.

When this first came out, i was flabbergasted by the arrangement. I went back to the original songs "Latching on to You" by Disclosure with Sam Smith, and "La La La" by Sam Smith, performed with Naughty Boy. Apologize in advance for the long post:
Kirstie starts with La La La,
La la la la, la la la la la la la la la la,
La la la la, la la la la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la la,
La la la la, la la la la la la la la la la
    ...Scott continues with Latch,
"You lift my heart up when the rest of me is down
    You, you enchant me, even
    when you’re not around
If there are boundaries, I will try to knock them down
I’m latching on babe, now I know what I have found (never)"
...Mitch rolls in with La La La,
    "Hush, don’t speak
    When you spit your venom,
keep it shut I hate it
    When you hiss and preach
    About your new messiah
    ‘cause your theories catch fire"
...and they all deliver a chorus of La La La
I can’t find your silver lining,
    I don’t mean to judge
But when you read your speech it’s tiring
    enough is enough
...Kirstie continues with La La La
I’m covering my ears like a kid,
When your words mean nothing I go la la la
I’m turning up the volume when you speak,
if my heart can’t stop it, I find a way to block it,
I go la la, la la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la la (never)
    ...Scott adds more of Latch
I'm so encaptured, got me wrapped up in your touch
Feel so enamored, hold me tight within your clutch
How do you do it? You got me losing every breath
What did you give me to make my heart beat out my chest?
and now Mitch's turn with Latch
Now I've got you in my space
I won't let go of you
Got you shackled in my embrace
I'm latching on to you (never let go, I won't let go)
... then Mitch and Scott alternate lines
    (I feel we’re close enough)
I can't find your silver lining
(I wanna lock in your love)
    I don't mean to judge
    (I feel we’re close enough)
But when you read your speech, it's tiring
(I wanna lock in your love)
    Enough is enough
... and Kirsty plus the group take us home with La La La
Covering my ears like a kid
And I'm latching onto you la la la la
I'm turning up the volume when you speak
If my heart can't stop it, I find a way to block it
I go la la, la la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la la la la, latching, latching onto
La la, la la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la la, (never)

Ben Bram has been with them since their Sing-Off days and helps them fine tune a lot of their arrangements but most of the time, their arrangements just start with them goofing around and just riffing off of each other randomly. they do a lot of circle jams where one of them just starts something and then the rest join in until they come up with something they want to use. I'm not sure if you've reacted to this or not but there's a video of them just jamming and being silly called: pentatonix random jamming/singing on the fly that I think would answer a lot of this for you and it's super fun. also, you get a lot of it on the PTXperience as well ❤️

Hello Salvo G, Great reaction. Re-winding is OK. PTX does most of their writing and their own arranging. They work together on it and what they want it to sound like and then they clean it up and write the music. They also work with Ben Bram who is a master arranger and he will help put it together. There are a few videos where they talk about how they arrange - like the behind the scenes of Can You Feel the Love Tonight, the advertisement/promo clip for a course they ran last year teaching A Capella, and the Making of Evergreen, which is a mini-documentary on the production of the Evergreen Christmas Album that came out in 2021. You should react to all three f these! Great reaction as always. More PTX please and remember more Messer too.

collaborate? I've heard in interviews and various snippets in behind the scenes videos that they do a lot of off the cuff improvising (using a phone to record their ideas) - they'll often start with Kevin's percussion part, add a bass line, then add harmony 1 & 2 then the solo comes last. But when I've seen the videos of them doing it, it's much more free flowing than that. Then they give the phone recording to Ben Bram (others have mentioned him too) and he writes out the music and starts to put some structure to it. My understanding is that they all offer input all along the way, tweaking and improving it till each song is the perfection we expect :). When I come across those videos of them developing a song, I'll come back and leave a link for you.

Others have given you the low down on their arranging style but I agree with watching their behind the scenes videos (Evergreen is the most in depth bts).
    For songs I vote for:

Can You Feel The Love Tonight
They’re all good, so go for songs you like & please continue the Sing Off journey as it lets you see how they developed & learn each other’s strengths/weaknesses (if there are any weaknesses in this over talented group….I think genre preferences would be a better term).
Don’t apologize for back tracking…we don’t mind & it probably helps with copyright. It lets them know you’re actually doing a reaction/critique as apposed to just playing their videos for clicks 😊
