*What is Android? [Back to Basics]* Read the full post: goo.gl/xZSi8p Today, we'll be starting a new series of videos which should help you, or someone you know who is new to this OS, get started with Android. This is Part 1 of our Back to Basics Android video series. Let's get started! By The Tech Ninja (Kevin Nether) and Ankit Banerjee
I would be very interested in an updated video for 2019/2020! Everyone assumes that everyone already knows everything, but people are getting smartphones for the first time all the time.
Android Authority just oozes quality. I love it. You guys do very comprehensive and different videos compared to every other blog. Production quality is awesome. Hosts are likeable and friendly. Manage to stay very objective yet still some level of subjectiveness for that personal touch. Every video is a treat. I find myself watching these videos even though I know it's going to tell me things I already know, but I watch them anyway because they're great! Keep up the great work! Happy New Year everyone.
A video I strongly recommend for new android users, people wanting to switch to android and people wanting understand android better. All simply explained and in depth. Awesome work Kevin!
Thanks for making these videos. I recently made the switch from IOS to an android phone after being an isheep for a long time. And since it's a whole new OS i have to get used to these i find these videos helpful :)
Your video is being used in my classes curriculum. I've seen your videos before for other android app tutorials such as Tasker. Thanks for your contributions to everything I've been learning Android Authority and Kevin the Tech Ninja!
I'll say this- I still don't get Android because technology is really hard to figure out, but you did a much better job at explaining it than most so you get a thumbs up :)
One of the best feautures that Android has and other OS don't have, is the Google Contacts. I don't have to store all my contacts and email addresses on my SIM or phone memory since they're all synced in the cloud anytime, anywhere!
Hey. I came to android a year ago and am self-taught with a lot more to learn. Your video was very useful, however I feel that a newbie to android smart phones in general, still risks being a little confused after watching it. For instance, you indicated that "at the top we have our notification bar ....". You didn't point out exactly where at the top as you swiped through pages. That could confuse folks. "We can use our finger and drag the status bar down ... ." This should have been shown the instant you started discussing the notification bar. I guess what I'm saying is, it would be good to ensure what you're saying is in direct sync with what you're doing. Other than that, a very useful video. Thank you very much and really looking forward to the next instalment. Cheers.
I am watching this and still confused, so I came to the comments to see if anyone else is. Some language is taken for granted amongst people who know what they're talking about.
I love both systems so I do have both,I've got to know iOS fairly well so going to android for the first time and tuning in helps me, I wonder what else I don't know how exciting, thanks guys
Dankie/Merci 4 this video. Kevin Nether. The video is very educational. In South Africa stealings was with Cattle, cars and that stuff. Now it is moving to smartphones and a person must know this stuff.
Thanks for this, coming from iPad and iPod 5 using Apple IOS, I am not finding my new Nokia 5 using Android at all intuitive, for instance, I can’t even work out how to setup my Hotmail email account. I have my Gmail account for the sake of google and RUclips but it’s not my normal email provider.
I have a gmail account, but i don't know if it's linked to this youtube account. This whole google+ shit made everything so confusing! I don't want to have my phone linked to my youtube profile. Is there any way how i can do this?
Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open-source software, designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Android is developed by a consortium of developers known as the Open Handset Alliance and commercially sponsored by Google. It was unveiled in November 2007, with the first commercial Android device, the HTC Dream, being launched in September 2008. Most versions of Android are proprietary. The core components are taken from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which is free and open-source software (FOSS) primarily licensed under the Apache License. When Android is installed on devices, ability to modify the otherwise FOSS software is usually restricted, either by not providing the corresponding source code or preventing reinstallation through technical measures, rendering the installed version proprietary. Most Android devices ship with additional proprietary software pre-installed,[4] most notably Google Mobile Services (GMS)[5] which includes core apps such as Google Chrome, the digital distribution platform Google Play, and associated Google Play Services development platform. Over 70 percent of Android smartphones run Google's ecosystem; some with vendor-customized user interface and software suite, such as TouchWiz and later One UI by Samsung, and HTC Sense.[6] Competing Android ecosystems and forks include Fire OS (developed by Amazon), ColorOS by OPPO, OriginOS by vivo and MagicUI by Honor or custom ROM such as LineageOS. However, the "Android" name and logo are trademarks of Google which imposes standards to restrict the use of Android branding by "uncertified" devices outside their ecosystem.[7][8] The source code has been used to develop variants of Android on a range of other electronics, such as game consoles, digital cameras, portable media players, PCs, each with a specialized user interface. Some well known derivatives include Android TV for televisions and Wear OS for wearables, both developed by Google. Software packages on Android, which use the APK format, are generally distributed through proprietary application stores like Google Play Store, Amazon Appstore (including for Windows 11), Samsung Galaxy Store, Huawei AppGallery, Cafe Bazaar, and GetJar, or open source platforms like Aptoide or F-Droid. Android has been the best-selling OS worldwide on smartphones since 2011 and on tablets since 2013. As of May 2021, it has over three billion monthly active users, the largest installed base of any operating system,[9] and as of January 2021, the Google Play Store features over 3 million apps.[10] Android 13, released on August 15, 2022, is the latest version.[11]
I see that you have 2 million subs so there is like zero point (insert the number of zeros you want to and put 1 at the end) chance that I reach you, but thank you! Just got my first android phone (Honor 7 Lite) and I am so lost after spending 3 years with LUMIA
I am having problems with google now. The "ok google " works but where you get the information thing does not working. if anyone knows how to fix it without voiding the warranty, please tell me how!
The only thing the Android can't do is be a decent cell phone. I don't like being put through a wringer when I just want to make a phone call to someone that isn't in my 'Contacts'. Using an Android is worse than writing letters.
I don't know about anyone else but I'm running a custom rom and kernel on nexus 4. I get way better battery life than stock. But by turning on Google Now I loose almost 1 hour of screen on time. I save nearly an hour screen on time with google now off. Is this the same for everyone?
Sir i have a nexus 5 is it ok if didnt root it and leave it like that or i should root it because im a normal phone user only. Thank you and happy new year
No, iPhone is iOS. iOS is more secure, but very limited, while Android is a bit less stable but offers way more possibilities. And this video is very old
First and Last Name is incorrect grammar being used by Google it should be Name and Surname the word First is never used because the word Name is First as well you dont introduce your self by ''hi my first name is...."' the same with last name this is only to be use for people with more than one name Maria, Jane .

I already know all this stuff and I wanted to see how well he was able to explain it in the video. This is good so far.
A video I strongly recommend for new android users, people wanting to switch to android and people wanting understand android better. All simply explained and in depth. Awesome work Kevin!

Camera angle seems too high above you. Seems like an uncomfortable angle.
I think this is a great way for people who are considering switching from iOS to get a better understanding of android.
I love both systems so I do have both,I've got to know iOS fairly well so going to android for the first time and tuning in helps me, I wonder what else I don't know how exciting, thanks guys
