Yep: someone missed a trick: remember when the players would walk out into the arena like gladiators from behind the goal across the running track and the sand? When the balls were white? How the players would mount the steps to the Royal box to get their medals? Hold up the FA Cup slowly, with pride and respect, instead of throwing it up in the air to see how far the lid would fly? How the captain would receive the cup and not have to wait until everyone and his dog was up there? Now every ground is the same: No style, nothing unique. Same goes for the kits these days. Call me old - but it doesn't mean I'm wrong.
If you want to know where 'football' was in the late 80's this is a great example - an England/Scotland game with 30,000 un-sold tickets. They really were the grim-ist of days for footy.
In the 1980 we could not see live matches or even highlights of England matches.. but I used to sit at upper room and hear my neighbour radio live matches of England.. those days were different..
you could always see highlights since the 60s, the Scotland match was shown live from the 70s, I can remember the qualifiers for the 82 World Cup being shown live, league matches started being shown live in 84.
Have loved these uploads mate. I'm not English or Scottish, but these matches feature a lot of famous players from English football's past who I've read about but never been able to see enough of so it's been a blessing. Loved having a look at Pete Barnes, Kenny Burns, Phil Neal and Dalglish in your 78 video. This one has provided valuable exposure to Beardsley, Barnes, Stevie Nicol and McCoist (the latter not from English, but anywho) . It's a very important thing you're doing, contributing to the archive of footballing memories on this most accessible of platforms. Keep up the good work :)
@@duckjive1 second that..I'm really interested in the late 1970s and early 1980s period of the English game, the time when Clough and Taylor might have run the England outfit..this has been invaluable...I hope one day he gets a good version of the Euro 80 clash between England and Italy, there is a version of it on youtube but it cuts the winning goal out and some excellent chances that England squandered that night (the only game Greenwood lost in the tourneys he was in charge of and Italy two years later would win WC)..anyway massive thanks..
This is magical history. The ambience, the monarchy, all things that should mean something now as they did back then. There is no England now. The history and power of the empire has been destroyed from within. Thank you for preserving these important games.
@@Ayoung2028 they hit the bar, yep but it was all England really, even roy keane admitted that years later, they were unlucky in that tournament full stop, against the Dutch who were one of the best international teams of all time, they drew 1-1 for 70 mins, hit the post twice before Holland opened..and actually hit the crossbar later on and ruled wrongly offside..

@@Kiltskills I agree but imagine being Scottish eh....now that would be embarrassing. I wouldn't admit being Scottish. They should quit football. Their fans must be so bitter having been so disappointed since the dawn of time.
England players never seemed to perform at the same level as they did with their clubs. Find it excruciating to watch Scotland play, every attack ended with them just crossing it into the box and hoping someone will connect with it. That only works if you have Peter Crouch in there!
Nice peace of work British football is the best I love football that time Now days for me is dead We play fair football and very quick as it should be This is what players train for
Liverpool won the European Cup with 9 English players in the team. The club had an identity then. Now every club is just a global franchise. In Liverpool's case they were sold to the US and Capitalism. Billionaires who their 'Marxist' fans support. Ridiculous.
I always thought England's three defeats though were very harsh, even Roy Keane said if you created the number of chances England did and lose, you consider yourself unlucky..Against Holland it was a tough match, 1-1 after 70 mins, and the English hit the post twice and Lineker the post (though it was ruled wrongly for offside..I always thought Gary Stevens had a very progressive mindset but could be too attack minded...Dave Watson was a good defender who should have gone to Mexico in 1986 instead of the terrible Fenwick but not a Terry Butcher.. there was a lack of pace at the back that was corrected two years later in Italia 90..
This 107th match between England and Scotland and the first staged on a Saturday for seven years was spoiled by crowd trouble outside the ground that led to over two hundred arrests. The high spot on the pitch was a beautifully created first-half goal by Peter Beardsley that was enough to give England victory in this Rous Cup match, which was again a triangular tournament with Colombia the overseas guests. England were far and away the better team, and Jim Leighton pulled off a procession of brilliant saves to prove that Scottish goalkeepers were not as bad as myth suggested.
always seems weird now, watching a back pass and seeing the goalkeeper pick the ball up....I am so conditioned that I just think...why are you picking the ball up???
Heh, been watching the games from the 70s and the contrast in style of play is interesting, this is the birth of boring modern football not nearly so much fun to watch.
Went to this game I think it was a rous cup game ?and I remember some serious crowd disorder ,with fans openly fist fighting at the end I was in. I was with a block of England fans surrounded by Scottish fans ,who were throwing coins at us throughout the game. The segregation was shit and the police lost it outside as both sets of fans clashed all over the place after the game.
@@duckjive1 maybe FA saw the Auld Enemy fixture did not appeal to them as years before. But now I would like to suggest the rebirth of the Home Championship since Scotland/Wales have the the chance to play in the coming WC. so the championship is s perfect warm up for England and the other Home nations.
Watching these matches really does highlight how much the soul has been sucked out of the modern game. I was always football mad growing up. Would never miss a game. Now it is a dull affair to me. On paper football is better now...the stadiums...technical quality of the players...but it is a corporate, overhyped and soulless pile of pony. Thanks for the channel. It's appreciated.
Our Miller/McLeish obsession held us back imo. Meant Aitken in midfield, sidelined Hansen and Gillespie at times. Roxbrough seemed terrified of 2 creative midfielders as well.
@@duckjive1 rmbr Butch Ray Wilkins the Crab 🦀! At Chelsea he played great then at Man U every ball it felt went sideways. Why did he change so. Done well & died too young.
@@duckjive1 Do you notice if you watch a game today - they all seem like 5 a side games. Nearly every goal is scored in the 6 yard box from a pull back.
Interest in England v Scotland had nose-dived. The poor crowds were a talking point in the 80s. Hooliganism at Wembley in 1977 was very bad publicity for the fixture and there was plenty more trouble in the mid-80s. Also, the fixture had been removed from its previous position as the culmination of the old Home International tournament. The annual matches came to an end soon after this one.
If only the new Wembley had the same feel to it.
