    I've been trying to return my Spyderco Sage 1 in Maxamet for 2 years now. It's a liner lock but this piece of crap stays locked no matter how hard I wack the spine on our granite countertops. What a joke! And it's got to be at least 66 HRC. It's dangerous. Who wants that in a folder?

      He scoffed at the idea that an edge could benefit from having a fine tooth pattern. Denied any benefits whatsoever. Now days, it is widely accepted.
      He had a huge following sadly full of bad and uneducated information and attacked anyone who actually had the years of experience in sharpening or Heat treating that he himself did not have.
      He put his opinions above any other and worse, above any actual experience regardless of source. Including some of the most respected names in the Steel business, and actual top Knife Makers.
      Yet he had no actual experience at all. Just a keyboard.
      KnifeMaker

    • @toolthoughts
      @toolthoughts 7 месяцев назад

      @@michaell397 I thought he was pretty clear about being a physicist. He certainly had a good grasp of research methodology. I think a lot of the drama came from him being pedantic about terms used, and also writing in a sort of shorthand way typical of academia, which can be opaque if you're not used to it. He would provided sources, too, but I think people expected digestible quotes rather than references to research literature that weren't necessarily easily available.
      He seemed to be friendly and in correspondence with experts like Roman Landes, and with several respected makers. Sal Glesser for example wrote on Stamp's forum after his passing:
      "A shock and a heart breaker for me. I had more respect for Cliff than just about anyone in the industry, Special and Unique." and "I conversed with him many times in forums and emails. I always learned from him. When Spark cut him off, I invited him to participate in the Spyderco forum which he did for some time. He was a really great asset to our forum --" and offered funds to keep Cliff's site going.
      Larrin Thomas credited him among others with editing his Knife Engineering book.
      I saw him change opinion on things after more in depth discussion, one example being wetstone techniques with Murray Carter, so I don't think he put himself above others. I also had brief private exchanges with him back when YT had a messaging function. We didn't agree on everything, but he was certainly able to understand a different viewpoint and respect it.
      He did make some knives, and of course modify them, and had many knives made to his custom spec. These weren't necessarily master craftsman level pieces, because they were made primarily for testing.
      I can't recall a toothed edge discussion like that. He certainly talked a lot about scratch patterns in his videos and posts later on, so I think he understood them or came to, if he didn't before.
