Taylor Fritz did this serve in an exhibition at Indian Wells. I have to say yours is better. 🔥
Yeah right
He is right.
@@craigmorgan1617
Yeah right
Tursunov did it first back in the 00s
@@DoDo-ck5gg he is talking about this specific trick serve you do do
I used to do that serve in high school (45 years ago), but could never do it consistently. I always wondered why more pros didn't use it. This guy's perfected it.
I think the top ranks get a read on it pretty quick, and as you say it's a more difficult serve to hit consistently well. It's not a valuable enough tool at the pro level for most to spend time developing.
Yep same here. It is not an easy serve to land in the right spot to get the Ace.
This dude is legit nasty.
@Andy Himes No, the American Twist is just another name for a kick serve. I don't think this serve really has a name, although Screw Ball would be a good one. :D
The simplest reason is that the strain on your arm/elbow will make it impossible to do this serve a lot with the amount of power pro's use. It will leave them with a lot of injuries
@@TheMitchie21 Now that makes sense. I'm thinking someone like Nick Kyrios could try and use it every now and again.
It is funny that I played few months ago doubles against one of the opponents who was just 3.5 Usta player and he had this crazy pancake serve, which I encountered first time in my life and I was pretty shocked by it!
This serve should actually be called the “reverse twist”. I first encountered it against two players from Kollegal in South India, who used it all the time, so I got used to returning it. It is effective only when 1) you are consistent 2) you use it as a surprise thing. This grip change at windup needs to be practiced slowly at first, the reverse wrist snap can really hurt your wrist if you don’t strengthen it along the way.
But the way you are doing it is amazing ! Good luck with it on the tour, but they are pros for a reason - to be used tactically only!
I do a normal “American twist” where I brush up and out, SW to NE and as a right hander it kicks up high into the backhand. The reverse twist is more like a wicked lefty slice that you don’t expect from a right hander. Now if a lefty does this Reverse Twist that can also shock a lot of people!!
I just realized that a body serve would be really good too if you disguise it well and could be a higher % option
Mix them up and your opponent will be completely helpless.
When I was playing in the 1970s and 80s we called this an American Twist serve. Where instead of a traditional slice serve, you angle it the opposite way. I could hit a damn fine one myself that was clocked at 115 once. I got a lot of aces from it. I'm surprised more players don't learn it and employ it.
This is not an American Twist. He's hitting it with a pancake grip on the inside of the ball. Completely different action and effect.
115 is female territory.
average first serve speed Djokovic 120mph, Federer 117mph, Nadal 116mph. sliced serves are always slower too, but stil very efficient with good placement
I love that serve. I wonder how many times you could use it in a match before a high level player ( like top 300) would recognize and hit good returns off it?
In my experience, no matter the level I play against, when I pull out this serve 2-3 times it makes them a little bit more unsure what serve I’m about to hit. And that makes my “normal” serve a lot more effective, because they get slightly slower at reacting to all serves
Taylor Fritz did it successfully to Fuscovics the other day
@@grimson yea, just saw a Rune video with him practicing it.
@@Simon.Freund I do this type of swing serve sometimes, The advantage you have with this is you can open up the gap more with using different spins and speeds with the slider and cutter serves. It also makes them unsure about the T. But I also do a more shorter serve that dumps down on such a ridiculous angle by the netpost sometimes so I dont always drop it down deep in the corner or halfway up the service line and this serve when it goes that extreme can pull people metres off the court to try to get to the ball. You can pull them 15-20 feet outside off the court which is a little nasty.. But I'm only at club level and already starting to pull people off the court with it. For the whole idea of slice serving to me is to get the opponent off the court so i'm going one more level up than just having the opponent sitting on the baseline and just swing and miss the ball. But you obviously have a more higher level of the swing serve developed because its hits the ball quite flat and has pace so it reminds me of a slice smash because the serve I do is still a little bit loopy. I've not seen any coaching lessons yet on how to put more flat into the swing serve to turn it from a loopy swing serve into a more flatter swing serve like what you have it at now.
But as a starting point I have been finding out how to hit the ball more flatter through the court now with the slice smash than with using my the normal smash... And starting to use that more to shut down the weak short sitters up at the net. So I could probably add this slice component to my swing serve to flatten the serve out more. Because I noticed with the slice smash that it opens up more of the court.
Oooioijoioóiiiiiioopipooooiooppiioiop
I was practicing the infamous pancake and hit it with so much spin and so far out, I think it’s still going.
haha, what you practice you improve!
This Angle and dynamic Serve is smooth. Amazing Stuff.
Absolutely epic man. Epic. I would imagine if one starts recognising this, it won't matter... they'll be stretched out so far that you could be a serve and volley king of the new era.
Cheers!
M
I don't think I've ever seen it done on the deuce side, that was amazing lol
Yep, great serve. I used to hit this serve back in the day thinking it was an American Twist, but it wasn't called that and I still don't know the name of it. I wonder why it isn't used by more players as I always though of the opposing spin to be really effective as it spins the opposite direction and throws people off. Plus, I always felt you could put more pace on it cause it feels somewhat like a flat serve but your coming around the other side of the ball as your jumping into the court. Great serve by the way, hope your career takes off like your serve does. Your game looks solid...certainly, the serve is and you hide it pretty well.
Reverse twist is the Correct name of this serve
It seems to me it would be especially effective against players who stand ten-15 feet behind the baseline to return.
Having hit this serve before many times, I can say that I never got it this dialed in or hit it at this speed. It is no small feat. Just an amazing weapon you’ve got there.
well, he doesn't show you the times it didn't work
Amazing serve!. Naruto´s run at the end was funny.
Unbelievable dude, you gotta learn me that! Hope you make it to the top 100 and pull out this serve once in a while at the top ATP tourneys 🤞🏽
You don't get out much do you?
ANOTHER DUMB RUclips POSTER.
Just because the serve is not used by professionals .......BECAUSE THEY CAN SEE IT COMING AND ANTICIPATE IT ......does not make it "unheard of".
Just another RUclips poster looking to make a little money .......somehow.
.
Power and spin together!! That’s amazing!!
Excellent screwball serve!
I was able to hit a similar one with a decent level of consistency, but at a much slower speed (I play at a much lower skill level too), and it was funny to see the frustration in my opponent.
I guess even at much lower racquet speed they couldn’t pick up the difference in the head’s direction
Here's another one. I used to be a sports and rec officer at a boy's detention facility. The less dangerous boys would come out for tennis. One of them one night, accidentally hit a serve where he tossed the ball up, came through with full power too early, and barely clipped the ball with the top of his racquet. The serve receiver peeled back expecting a full paced ball coming at him, but the damned thing just lobbed over the net and basically bounced twice inside the service box.
This kid then set about replicating this serve and after some practice over a couple of weeks was able to actually pull it off quite often. Like the pancake, when it came off it seriously messed with your head.
The motion is disguised so well!
Is the grip you using for the service between continental and eastern?
It’s gonna be a must-learn technic in the future tennis. Only coaching that service make you a millionaire!
Simon, I'm wondering if you could create some videos going through points of you and other pros, thought by thought. What I mean is that seeing how you see points and try to set up points would be super beneficial to people like me, a 4.5 USTA. Examples like: opponent forced you to hit a defensive shot, opponent is now going to capitalize and hit a hard angle, how in this point did you read body language or use previous points as info to predict where the shot was coming? Predictions like this happens all the time in high level tennis, so getting a glimpse of that thinking as someone at my level is extremely useful
Basically all "reading body language" or any type of tennis tutorial on RUclips is for lower level players, and I am having a hard time gaining any useful info as a high 4.5 usta player, trying to push 5.0 before the year is up. But you already create really good content and informational content as a pro, so I'm hoping you can be the one who saves us all lop
got some in the pipes for next week which I think you will enjoy 👊
you need to do a video on how to do your serve!
More in depth course comin soon!
I used to do this on accident when I first started playing. Pretty cool to see someone genuinely use it.
i like how he just started running like that at the end 😅
So I learned playing tennis in late 80s and when i got to Highschool I met 2 Italian brothers that were Open players at the time. The older brother was power and had 1 handed back hand and disciplined. The younger brother was a two hander backhand and flashy as hell. He taught me how to hit that serve in 1990, along with tweener, behind the back, around the back/side. He was so creative I haven’t seen many players creative like him on non-pro level. But yes great serve for sure my friend! (It’s like a version of American Twist is what we called it even though technique is different from what you will see from pros). Btw as a right handed player i liked hitting this serve in the add court to swing out wide. If i did hit on deuce court i would hit down the T. Cheers
awesome. obliged the endearing 5 second interruption. liked and subscribed. keep it up!!!
I tried it once, hit my knee and felt like I almost dislocated my shoulder and elbow. Your one is world class
That's a slick serve that has the lefty spin on the ad-side. However this is sort of difficult to disguise - at least for me. I have to use a full-Western grip which would be difficult to disguise and my toss would be much different in order to get the full right-to-left brush action.
Time out. Are you telling us that you serve with a full-Western grip????? NO WAY.
@@donnysworld6774 For this serve...
Love that serve. Would work at any level.
J.j Wolf does the exact opposite serve... and it looks amazing. He does it with a ton of spin like this one too. Upper body crosses the middle serve plane to enhance the effect.. it's cool.
The opposite serve is a regular slice serve I suppose, sliding away to the server's left instead of his right?
0:29 LMAOOO 😂 that guy is so me
Yeah fantastic serve great job!
I used to hit this in the late 90s. It was always good for a surprise.
Tutorial please. I've been trying copying it for weeks but can only get moderate side spin and nothing like when you or Fritz do it.
More in depth course comin soon!!
@@Simon.Freund ❤
I have played in almost all those clubs seen here, with SALK being my favorite. Nice serve btw!
Very impressive!
What are your stats with this serve now Simon? Has there been improvement in the past year? If you could make it consistent that serve is total killer!
I believe I'm able to make it consistently 60-70% of the time!
If you can put 60-70% in…what is the percentage of points you make (when it is in)? What I’ve seen here is 100% of effectiveness! So, can you use it on regular basis?
@@gonzalolibano6505 it depends on a precision
Can you do video of how tennis players should train in the gym
that is insane..Only faced one player with that serve and I hated but no where near as good as yours.. Much respect
This is commonly called the Inside Out serve, never heard of the Pancake serve, BUT, it's an awesome serve. Very difficult to execute, I've been practicing this, and getting closer!
I only saw this once on the pro tour, by Lukas Rosol. Seeing you doing this to great effect, I wonder why it's so uncommon at the high level. It IS a great variation, no?
because if you use it wrong it's very bad for your elbow. also pro's will read this server if you do it once to much :)
Taylor Fritz did it a couple of days ago at Indian Wells.
Dimitri tursunov is another one that has used it
Really more of a needless variation for a player with a good serve
@@sergiosimbula Wasn't that a regular kick serve?
Reverse American i believe. Lots of pros have it in the repertoire but I'm assuming losing the range on the standard serves to add this one was more negative than positive. You seem to have it fully locked in!! Great job. I use this in platform tennis and its just ridiculous as its a harder read on the ball and much more action off the screens :))
I would think that would be something that everybody should learn, higher level players anyway.
Think about if the pros learned that serve, it would change the game completely. Right now you have to cover only one curve direction... Suppose it became standard practice for everyone to learn both directions? You might even have to narrow the width of the court, or at least the service boxes.
That serve is 🔥
thats a pretty decent reverse
She's a beauty, Simon. I see you've got it down on both the Deuce and Ad. Do you incorporate it frequently, or do you save it for big points?
It's a lot about how I'm feeling. So no real "tactic" to it, I play it more off feel
Ha! I gotta try it. It's very similar to reverse cut drop shot in badminton! I do that a lot so maybe it will translate well. Small difference in racket weight ;) (310g vs 87g...)
Amazing serve! Please talk about your tips!
Rosol does this serve with great effect!
absolutely brilliant 😊😊😊
Great video. Great serve. Keep em coming 🏆
I wish Fed used it when serving for the Wimbly title against Djokovic in 2019
I've tried this long ago, but never did it well. Great jobs!!
こんなにキレのあるリバースサーブは初めて見た!!
The first guy he is playing against is Jacopo Berrettini (Mateo’s younger brother)
Great, but can you tell or try to explain how to achieve the effect? Thanks very good !
Www.pillar.io/Simonfreund if you wanna check it out 👊
The Twist-Serve is really old fashioned. People used it in the 60s. It is described in many textbooks and was part of the certified educator exams. Nothing new, but anyhow really cool 😎 ... Perfectly shown in this video 👍🏻
Awesome serve!
The most efficient serve ever 🙌🏼
I can hit this serve inconsistently, but can hit the flat serve on the other side of the axis pretty well. Do you have any tips, technique-wise, for how to hit this serve consistently? I've played my entire life.
Funny to have this lefty serve as a right hander.
Very nice.
Edit it so you also show some of them in slow-motion maybe?
I believe you once said that to hit the pancake serve you changed your grip to a forehand grip on the take back from your normal continental. In these clips it looks like you’re only using a regular continental grip and making contact after full pronation has taken place. A swing path that is to the right of what would be used for a flat serve is being employed. It’s almost like your contacting the ball at the beginning of a flat serves follow through. Is this more or less correct? I might have to start playing tennis again just to learn this serve.
pancake madness.. Fritz must have seen some of your vids lol
The reverse slice 😳
Hey Simon, we need a tutorial on that serve! :)
Working on it!! Hopefully have it ready by this weekend :)
@@Simon.Freund subscribed for the big tutorial 👍
Kinda reminds me of many unique plays in sports... You kinda wonder why they haven't been used more. Patrick Mahommes does some fun improvisations. Jump throws, flips, fakes...I served balls like this in high school (not as good or consistent). Just do it.
I’m a lefty and a fairly good server and still might not break the slice out wide on the ad side as well as you do lol
Great. And how are we doing in official matchs?
Basically a lefty slice serve. Lukas Rosol does this sometimes.
Dude, #1 HTF are you doing that and #2 does it ever mess your shoulder up? Great serve that's mind-blowing action on a first serve.
the opponent's reactions are too funny hehe
I wish Federer did one of these serves on match point against Djokovic at Wimbledon, or unreturnable, on grass serving aces should be the easiest thing to do, as someone who has the best serve of all time! Yet after getting taken to deuce, his whole game literally collapsed! One of these slice serves or extreme slice spin serves near the T, surely would have won the Wimbledon match, with that precision of a dime, maybe God was just not on his side, but who knows, miracles can happen, praying for a comeback Wimbledon 2023!
This is an amazing serve grip to use. Why is it every coach and pro tells people not to do this when it actually works!?
Taylor Friz just used that serve in Indian Wells. It was return by his opponent easily.. Against top ATP guys, is not a big deal.
There’s a guy l play with you can serve like that, but he hasn’t mastered like this player. Very hard to return.
basically a righty becomes a lefty! I do this alot when teaching my players to receive a lefty serve, though not as good as this one! Impressive..
Boris Becker used to do this reverse slice serve too
why does every racquet sports youtuber have a signature shot LOL
Very impressive and deceptive. Definitely a legitimate serve that’s different!
Lukas Rosol used it pretty well against Nadal at Wimbledon.
can you serve a normal slice serve as well? Curve ball and screwball....Stan Musial said those were the toughest pitchers he faced.....
Soooo satisfying
How does your 1st serve % look on pancake serves?
I would say between 60-70% :)
A good doubles player
Been doing that serve for years
How do you do the serve at 1:30 as a lefty?
So are you switching your grip more open right as you bring the racquet up? It's difficult to tell, but it just doesn't look possible to do with a closed racquet face.
a right handed serve that moves like a lefty's serve - in baseball that would be called a screwball pitch ,,, movement > pace is the way to go
What grip I should use for a pancake serve? Semi western?
What a stunningly well crafted serve. Not overly big though fast enough & who cares let the spin do the work 😂
Combining this with a good slice serve would be devastating
Nice reverse serve
We call that the windshield wiper serve in table tennis
This is a outside slice, right? Is this the same as the Bubliks serve?
What grip do you use to hit that thing? At my age I’ll probably hurt my arm but it would be fun to give it a try.
that serve has been around for a long time - you dont see it very often because its difficult to control
Epic! Just epic!
Amazing !
