  • JS Bach's 'Fantasia in G Major' BWV 572 is often known as 'Piece d'Orgue', and here it is played at Winchester Cathedral on 11th August 2022.
The opening section uses the Nave coupled to the Choir with echos on the Swell coupled with the Solo.
This was performed live after a Choral Evensong in this wonderful space.
    I hope you enjoy! :)

I love this exceedingly beautiful composition. It truly touches the soul. The first time I heard my church organist perform the piece, I was deeply moved.

Bach's skill at building on a simple motif until that awesome moment when the alla breve section arrives - rather like arriving on a sunlit plateau after a climb in the alps and striding out, energised until the reprise of the opening but in a descent to the home base. Hugely impressive as piece of musical architecture and brilliantly and sympathetically interpreted, Richard, as always. I'm still on a high after listening to this. Thank you.

How nice to be in Winchester Cathedral! It was interesting to see people moving around on the monitor while you played - I'm sure they were blown away. Love you alternated manuals and changed the ending from being bombastic. Superb job!

Brilliant. You make it look so easy with your hands and fingers seemingly effortlessly in exactly in the right place t the right time…… but I know it isn’t effortless or easy….it is the result of careful planning of fingering and hours of practice. Thank you for the music.

    Marvellous Richard!😊💯
Liked the echo effect at the start!
p.s I have a wish, when I was little there was a very good French children's series which aired here in Sweden called il était une fois ( l'home )Once Upon a Time (life) or Det var en gång -tidernas äventyr (Swedish), the intro to that series was
J.S. Bach - Toccata und Fuge BWV 565 a mighty organ piece indeed.
My wish is, if it is possible if you may play that organ piece on a church organ please.

I'm entirely sure what it does (it's all changed since my time there!), but it does have a CD player/recorder on it.

Very nice. I love the manual changes in the first part. I'm learning this piece for a wedding soon. I thought the fast sections would be harder, but I found the middle section to be the hardest. Do you play in your socks instead of shoes? I taught myself how to play in high school with no shoes and when I got to college my professor made me play in shoes. I still like to play without shoes.

I’d like to make a suggestion to any organist performing this piece. Beginning at 1:56, there are multiple layers the remainder of the piece, but when everything is played on one manual those inner voices are mixed with everything else. One instance is at 4:47 and those beautiful inner voices don’t stand out as they should.

To make so much noise when the organist is performing, is disrespectful. In Norway the congregation remains seated until the voluntary is performed.

Never come to the USA. You’ll be sorely disappointed in the congregation’s chit-chat…

Yes, if people want to hang out and chat, why go to this? It's wasted on them.

I remember getting a message when playing at the end of a service, to play more quietly as someone was trying to pray! C'est la vie..

Does the Choir division contribute anything to the plenum when coupled to the Great, or is it strictly an accompaniment division?

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  2 года назад

Yes it can add something to the plenum, with appropriate care. In the Quire it is very present so I’d suggest using it separately to the Great (and Swell) plenum, but in the Nave it would be wise to bring through the choir Mixture (along with some of the Nave division).
