Also... The guy that said "you're spending too much on listening posts, more cultists early" gave the worst possible advice... Lp1's pay themselves back in less than 20 seconds as they have a completion bonus! Lp2s take less than a minute and a half to pay off the req cost, but also cost energy, slowing down a potential T2 rush. LP3s are the expensive ones that take a long time to pay off and you should avoid unless you know what you're doing.
Building lp's is the most important thing in the game just after capping and decapping points. Cults have good upgrades (nade cults, especially) and you either go lp2's, lord + csm squad and then delayed 2nd csm after getting into t2 or just full mass and try to finish the game in 2 minutes. That's the beauty of this game
Little tip: Always maximise your gretchin squads size to the max straight away to build faster with every squad!!! They're not single workers like in WC3. They're little squads so you need to right click that plus button to maximise each squads total units automatically!
Orks requiring minimum population to progress further is good representation of their lore. As bioengineered humanoid fungus they have some innate understanding of technology and tinkering. Also the more orks there are in specific area the more intelligent they'll become in time due their gestalt subconsciousness and soem more advanced ork types will be born. The only problem is that only very few will live long enough to get actual benefits from that.
ORK lore is weird. Basically nothing they build should work because it's random crap glued together in the shape of what they need. But because the orks believe their creations work they will work despite the fact they shouldn't. See, the ORKs have a secret power of belief, if they collectively believe something to be true then by GORK and MORK it is true. Another funny thing about orks is they believe different colors have different properties. Red for speed, Blue for luck, and Green is the best color. Purple is the sneakiest color because have you ever seen a purple ork before
Thats actually not true but stated that way because the imperium has no understanding of ork technology whatsoever and these statements are usually made from the point of the imperium. Orks go by instinct and their technology is based on science, even if it is a primitive and rough one because of their mental degression.
One of those RTS / RPG mixed games that I absolutely adored back in the days! Seeing the huge demons and other avatars once you tech up to them was mind blowing graphics and feeling!! Absolute gem of a game, one of the best ones ever
At last Grubbsky started his warhammer journey by playing the best RTS game from this lore universe. Hope he takes the time to learn the game more so we see maybe even see him competing in multiplayer!
Great to see you playing some DOW grubby! You should try DOW2 next - campaigns are fantastic and a little more polished. Multiplayer scene is still alive in the Elite Mod community with some new playable factions and units.
Highly recommend the Ork single player campaigns in the expansions Winter Assault and in Dark Crusade if you like the aesthetic, they have some iconic characters
Dawn of War I is probably my favourite RTS (if I had to pick one). And that's really because it oozes flavour. From the voice acting, the sync kills, the music.. Well, that and the army painter.
Happy to see you give it a go. Played both dow1 and mostly dow2 professionally myself for a good while back then, feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Recommend giving dow1 with its expansions a go as it fleshes out each faction a good bit and rounds out gameplay. Whereas 1 is more of a traditional rts, 2 is a smaller scale tactical approach with heavy emphasis on cover (think company of heroes) and heroes, and 3... uh ... well 3 doesn't really have either. Its a big departure and never received much love post-launch so its unfortunately the least appealing of what warhammer 40k has to offer rts wise. Other honorable mention goes to battlefleet gothic armada 2 that despite having only a tiny playerbase left is a total blast with how many factions it has on offer for skirmish/multiplayer all packed in its basegame. Great space ship-combat realtime tactics game.
had III for 4 €. Only after annih. option. Have about 300h in in purely SP/skir. No unit exp, lack of ragdolls, plus many other things, the thing could have been salvaged into playable state. DoW 2 generator gameplay and VP is just not to my liking.
Can you recommend any good RUclips channels with replays? I tried to search but all i get is some dude doing some half-arsed commentary without any understanding of the game.
@@pierredachello6268Don't really know any sadly. Most coverage of dow1 you see these days is usually showcasing stuff like the unification mod or similar which adds so much stuff it may as well be its own game and thus is quite a departure from the original experience. Channel that goes by official mr landshark was one i watched ages ago doing some match commentary. May be hard to follow if youre not already somewhat familiar with dow1.
Ohhh, nice Dawn of War content! I believe that DOW is one of the most fun RTS games to play (but I just don't like the reinforcement mechanic, LOL). It's enjoyable to command a squad instead of a single unit, and the morale mechanics are also great. The lack of reinforcement for Gretchins kinda triggers me, LOL. Early on, Orks should just focus on capturing points (listening posts) and spamming banners. Sluggas are just there to increase your population, and to capture points, they are just cannon fodder. I rarely play Ork, but it's a fun race. It's like Zerg in Starcraft, in theory. The Zerg will overwhelm opponents with a Zergling rush, but in reality, you just sit back and expand, LOL. But anyway, GG, it was fun to watch!
There is a modded AI, which is harder, smarter with player like behavior and builds and can be set up in many ways. This mod is "Dawn of Skirmiss SS AI 3.2", you can set up atack delay, tech speed, lvl of "dancing"(kiting), early harassing toggle and so on. You definitely do not want to play vs something else than "hard" difficulty, coz others give you and AI some cheese bonuses without mods.
Watching those 2 DoW 1 videos was painful though. Maybe actually playing the tutorial isn't a bad idea? It is tedious at the start, teaching you about camera movements and what not but the basics of key mechanics are actually very well explained. At least after you learn them you will stop hotkey spamming around and let your units do what they suppose to 😂
Hey Grubby, DoW is a great game if you just want some mindless fun, but if you want actual competitive matches with an RPG element to it you should try DoW 2 Elite MoD. It still gets frequent updates to this day, and its very well balanced. Also, I know you like heroes/factions with simple mechanics so maybe you should try space marines/necrons instead of orks for now, if you plan on sticking to DoW 1. Edit: Oh and the damage output indicator is not very accurate. The damage a unit deals is highly varied and that number means almost nothing. It is not like in warcraft where it just shows you how much damage a unit deals per hit, its more like how much damage this unit deals on average taking into account rate of fire and varied enemy armor types.
I highly, highly recommend you try out Lords of Everquest It's from late 2003 and was supposed to be a direct competitor to War3, but sadly failed quite hard. The game imo is really good tho, and definitely worth a try!
You needed to get your Gretchens to maximum size and developed a Waagh Tower network while you went out and got resources and Choppas/Shootas. As you build WAAAGH! you then go for the better units and some siege when you assault the bases. You effectively play Orks like you do the Zerg: Overwhelm the enemy with cheap, replaceable units. You also didn't have a hero out on your 2nd game when they did.
fwaghwgads! I missed you playing more DoW? Love that you restarted skirmish when you lost :). When the multiplayer scene was active, ah it was so damn competitive in 1v1! I still brag about taking games off of Select, he was considered unbeatable with eldar in Winter Assault expansion. This has got to be my #2 favorite rts behind broodwar, or at least right up there with wc2/3. The factions are oozing with identity and excellent voice acting... So glad you got to experience Chaos too! DoW2 was fairly good but too close to Company of Heroes. Dawn of War 1 really was unique and I hope you get a chance to play some fierce multiplayer and a nice comeback or tug-of-war. Wanna 1v1? :D
You've probably already seen people clarify but just in case DoW1 is a proper strategy game in the CoH template, DoW2 is a smaller scale tactical game which inspired a lot of poor knockoffs like C&C4
Defintely get the Winter Assault and Dark Crusade expansions, game is basically incomplete without them. Soulstorm, the last expansion, is not very good, although adds two more playable factions and some new units, so you may want to try it too eventually.

I think it's incorrect to call DoW a 'real-time-tactics' game. It blurs the lines a little; but if you put it on a spectrum, it definitely leans much more noticeably on the RTS side of that spectrum. More so than DoW2
I'm surprised how strong the AI is. Granted Grubby is playing the game fairly blind but still, the strength of their very first armies has been pretty one-sided.
DoW1 AI has a pretty good build order, so the first few minutes it's very strong (even at lower difficulties). Later on in the game it does not spend it's money well though. And it has big issues with engagements (like in the last game where it ran it's whole army through grubbys base without engaging). Sometimes it just runs from fights that it could easily win.
