I just recently was thinking to get my head into UE5 and rebuild that game. Obviously I won't do that, I wish somebody just would and THQ Relic wouldn't mind :D
Oh, I wish I was on stream, where I would answer many questions about this game. First missions are like tutorials and power fantasy. -You can do an automatic production and upgrades, by right clicking them, it will do it as soon as resources and build time is available. -Units have a big penalty to accuracy on the move, but some of them have less penalty or 0 penalty like flamer. -Units have a morale stats, when broken, their speed increases, but accuracy is really low. Some units, weapons, abilities and so on, deals more morale dmg. Loses also inflicts morale dmg and some units or races may be more resistant to it. -There are different armor types, so some units and weapons deals less dmg to some units. -Also heavy artillery units can knock back units to break their formation and often break their morale. -Melee atacks force other units to also get in to melee, unless they have no melee atack option. You want to force high dps, range units to get in to melee stance to lower their dps.... The counter to it, is running away, coz atack on the move does silly dmg most of the time. -You can cap points with one squad, there in no cap speed difference with more and not every unit can cap. You can shift click commands to plan them ahead. -Stances are useful, but maybe more in multiplayer or vs modded AI which then can kite. -Building listening post on points grants you 50 resource points to lower the time in which they return invested value. Also they can be upgraded with gun, which gives even more resources. Points which are held in your hand for along time, are going to give less resources until minimum is reached, but idk if it works in SP. -There is a simple cover system. -Buildings have armor types too -Markers on the maps shows general direction of a mission objective. -Commander has a different armor type, so he can tank more. Abilities and more power to him, comes from upgrades and tech. And btw.... Orks are a space fungus, which was made to fight for a race of old ones, which is no longer there. Edit. Play only on its hard mode, normal mode lower enemy HP to 50%....
Don't worry. When he was streaming, he didn't pay attention to comments that were actually helpful 95% of the time, so your presence would neither help nor hinder Grubby.
Making sure Heavy Bolters are on Range stance and Stand ground Stance keeps them from constantly moving and redeploying. Angelos is a melee Commander. Make sure the squad you attach him to is set to melee also.
you can right-click on the squad addons (add more units, add special weapons) to auto add them when available, much better than having to queue up loads at once for each squad. Shift-queue any orders, _very_ important to get good! There's a _lot_ of tactical complexity that requires a lot of playtesting and experimenting. love this game!
@grubby theres alotta nuance to the game that isnt explicitly explained in the campaign. Morale is a big factor in the game and flamers primary effect is reducing morale which makes a units combat effectiveness worse. Position your squad and proper squad building is important. With heavy bolters if you just right click your squad will move to the range that ALL unit types will attack. This is why if you want a heavy bolter squad dont right click to attack l, as this will move them closer than they need. They are better to plant.
There are rumors that CA is working on Warhammer 40k Total War. If it ever comes to pass, it is likely to be absurdly good considering the Warhammer total war trilogy
OMG, Grubby playing DOW1!! ❤ DOW2 is in my personal opinion one of the best RTSlike games, but it is very different from DOW1 and nlt a full RTS. It is a lot more like CoH and focused on 4 squads per map campaign and missions So if you wonder why there might be so much love and hate at the same time for DOW2, it is because it wasn't a full RTS like what the DOW1 playerbase wanted. But it is still the best game of its type, just not an RTS
Thank you for this video! As far as I am concerned, DOW2, while lacking the classic basebuilding aspect of DOW1, has much more tactical depth (with more abundantly available directional cover, garrisons, more vulnerable vehicle rear armor, vehicle-snaring via av-grenades or setup teams, suppression effects, jump troops that knock back or stun units on landing, commander-dependent global abilities, unit reinforcement only around certain structures or transport vehicles, etc.) and more interesting ability gameplay (including energy/mana management (e.g. for shields, invisibility etc.) and combo/skillshot potential) than its predecessor, and I've played all expansions, on- and offline. Its hero focus (with different combat roles and wargear options) allows for more varied and personal playstyles. Also: destructible environments and the presence of actual line-of-sight/shot-blockers, which the first game does not have, make for a more exciting and visceral gameplay experience, imho (especially the latter is such a massive upgrade, given that in DOW1, units simply shoot through (!) solid terrain)! It does have a few engine-related issues, as other Relic (RTS) games do, though. Anyways, DOW2 Retribution with the Elite Mod is still great fun in online pvp.
Elite mod is great, adds a lot of content and fixes a lot of balance issues the base game has. I used to play it years ago, but saw recently that there are other mods popping up since then with tau and necron playable.
"This is actually a pretty damn good game" That's An Understatement! This is still arguably my favorite RTS game of all time. And that is comparing it to stuff such as SC1, SC:BW & SC2, WC3, CnC:RA 1 & 2, CnC3: TW, AoE1, 2 & 3, and DoW2, etc etc (I've played a lot of RTS games, these are just a few personal highlights). Whenever I get the good'ol RTS itch, THIS GAME, DoW1 and it's expansions, is still the game I keep finding myself returning to.
Dawn of War still one of the best RTS game series ever made. To this day, I play atleast once a year the whole of Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, every single race. And it's such fun every single time. Also the lore is great. So much of it.
Yep. (I think the Soulstorm Stronghold missions are the best designed campaign missions of the series, the problem is they're wrapped in Soulstorm, which the devs were never given time to finish... Which leaves Dark Crusade as the best overall.)
Grubby, I'm very happy to see you started playing this game, allow me to give you short tips that will help you in future levels: units in Dawn of war are 3 types: Infantry (Light Armor), Heavy Infantry (Heavy Armor), Vehicles and Buildings (Fortified armor). in addition, Infantry have HP and Morale, when units Morale drops, they miss their shot and their effectiveness is greatly reduced. Flamer is only effective to reduce enemy Morale, so don't use a lot of it as it's not effective against anything else, Heavy Bolter has a long range but requires setup time, and it's more effective against light infantry than heavy infantry. Plasma guns are effective against heavy infantry but has a lower firing rate. and finally, Missiles are very effective against fortified armor but has a very low firing rate and is only effective against a single target.
There is an active community around the soulstorm expansion if you are looking for multiplayer. The loved campaign is Dark crusade. I hope you enjoy my favorite game of all time.
Grubby, the RTS gaming legend...has only in the past 2-3 months played for the first time ever WH40k: DoW and Age of Mythology. Dude has seriously been in tunnel vision mode ever since WC3 and DotA came out lol.
Huh? is this parallel universe? But to be honest I thought about Grubby not mentioning DOW in his talks about RTS games and what not, felt as if he missed it completely, somehow
My childhood…and adulthood.. so amazing to see people picking the game up for the first time. This game was made by relic to answer your question early on. Lets hope they bring it back and don’t kill it like they did in DOW 3…
The Soulstorm expansion's global conquer campaign had me enthralled to beat it with every army. Loved it and glad I got to experience it before it reached too old to play status.
mr landshark has a whole community of people playing this game. They teach each other how to play and hold tournaments and post it on youtube. They also play with mods that balance the game further and add more playable factions.
17:00 thats kinda the idea with a squad i guess, they keep close, thats why you wanna keep 1 squad with close range weapons only and maybe make em go melee only, while other squads focus on ranged heavy weapons, and shoot at range, its all heavily inspired by the tabletop and ig lore, which it shud be
You start here. Before you know, you're vomiting "IN THE NAME OF THE GOD-EMPEROR" "PURGE XENOS" stuff and suddenly, you have 5000 points army in your room, lots of paints and tools you dont even know how to use properly and your bank savings just magically disappeared.
@GrubbyPlays hey Grubby, have You played Age of Darkness? It' similar to They are billions but it's with heroes and in a dark fantasy setting with 3 factions
If you get used to dawn of war and you'll like the setting I recomend you get yourself dawn of war soulstorm and an Ultimate Apocalypse mod for it. It expands your army rooster quite a bit. Also if you want to play as necrons for example in multiplayer soulstor you need to get the expansion that introduces them (dark crusade in that case) same goes for other races.
Grubby, you are indeed late, but it's never too late. DOW 1 is one of the BEST rts of history. It woudln't fit esports, but it's SO nice to play. And now with the mods you can have pretty much all the races and sub races. It's worth digging in, it adds a lot of replayability to a game that's already pretty amazing.
If you enjoyed this kind of gameplay, you should know the modders still support the game, in its later version. So Install "Dawn of War Soulstorm", add Crucible OR Unification mod(both updated recently, supporting singleplayer campaign as well as multiplayer) - and you can play it pretty much forever!
Funny, was recently wondering if you ever played this game. Just like SC, WC3 this too is a game i enjoy till this day along many other clasics. Hope you have a good time. 🙂
The reason you haven't played the game it came out right after I graduated from High School. I'm nearly 38 now. The game will be old enough to drink next year. I remember playing it extensively in LAN parties. Relic's RTS games were unquestioned until DOW3 failed to take off. Homeworld, COH, DOW... They basically owned the genre for a decade. I always preferred their RTS games over Blizzard's.
Halo Wars 1 and 2 are also great RTS. The first one is very clunky on mouse and keyboard, as it was made to be played on controler, but the controler hotkeys work surprising well, even on keyboard and mouse, you just need to take a look at them and try to train yourself to avoid using drag to select, as there's a weird delay on it. But the campaign itself is awesome, really gets the vibes of the Halo Universe. Halo Wars 2 is alot better gameplay wise, keeps the very usefull hotkeys from the first and plays like a proper keyboard and mouse RTS, also great campaign and much improved multiplayer.
Oh my god my childhood it was such a good game i wish they remade this game today. I bet it would be a banger like back then.
Are you sarcastic? Companies dont make games today like back then. Check out what blizzard did with reforged
I just recently was thinking to get my head into UE5 and rebuild that game. Obviously I won't do that, I wish somebody just would and THQ Relic wouldn't mind :D
You should try the modded versions. Unification or crucible. They are a very very satisfying experience
Yeah, sadly Relic haven't made a good game since Company of Heroes 1.
Please don't do it
