I'm British and am always astonished at how elaborate USA coffins grave vaults and crypts are. Compared to over here! Most of us are put in cheap plywood coffins and cremated in a virtual conveyor belt. No dignity.
When I was in the Air Force, I served on the Honor Guard, covered many a Funeral, mostly on the Firing Squad. Many were at Vets' Cemeteries at Calverton, L.I and Indiantown Gap, PA. Most services of any kind I've seen ended before the casket was lowered, but after all our Ceremony and Presenting the Flag at the designated area up front, it was kind of heartbreaking that a couple of guys just loaded the casket into a van to drive away to the actual gravesite. It all varies.....many don't want to see it, others it's a part of the farewell.
My family an I actually requested to see my love one lowered into the ground an of course we were allowed but I had to pay. On top of the 4500$ for a single grave it was an extra 300 to watch the casket get vaulted. I wish I would have never did it,it was so hard burying my 19yr old son ,no parent should outlive their children 😩
Liked the funeral director, who kept the fun in a funeral. "Lets go back and have some chicken", I hope the angel birds are homing pigeons and fly back to their home.
I've always said the vault guys are the black sheep of the funeral business. They do all of the hard work at the cemetery and hardly anyone acknowledges them. I always make it a point to thank them for showing up and doing a great job, and love when I see others thanking them as well. They appreciate it more than you know!
Vaults are required in alot of states now and with a vault you are only put in a four foot grave instead of 8 foot grave my family has been digging graves for over 60 years now
@@majorkira395 yes the coffin is right below the top but totally enclosed in the vault the will probably last well over a hundred years the vault like hers probably had a liner also that looked like a top of the line vault
WOW! As a retired funeral director in the U.K. 🇬🇧 I was absolutely gobsmacked by the whole procedure! Burial in the U.K. is normally direct into the earth. To allow the deceased to return - “ EARTH TO EARTH, ASHES TO ASHES, DUST TO DUST” ! What is the point of wanting to preserve the casket? It’s only a container for the deceased until it is lowered into the earth. In addition, the family may participate in lowering the coffin, after which time, they may scatter a little soil onto the coffin as a token, or even throw a flower. We find this helps enormously with the family’s grieving process. It’s no wonder death in the USA 🇺🇸 is horrifically expensive! As for the funeral company in this instance - absolutely disgusted to promote & advertise the company at such an emotional time! Finally, cremation is just as important as burial. At the end of the service curtains close around the catafalque. Once the congregation leave the chapel, the coffin is reverently removed to the cremation chamber. At no time is the coffin interfered with. At the appropriate time, the coffin is offered into the cremator & cremation takes place. I would add that the choice of container is families choice - it may be solid wood, perhaps a wicker coffin, or even a cardboard container! The family choose what they want for their loved one! Very recently, a number of funeral companies are offering “Direct Cremation “ - where the deceased is removed (from wherever the premises/location) after the family have paid their respects. There is NO funeral service. The deceased is cremated at a day, date & time convenient to the company, & the cremated remains returned to the family in due course. The current price is approximately £1600 !!!! And is proving VERY POPULAR!!!! Apologies for the essay, but I believe it’s important to understand how funeral ceremonies can vary considerably. ❤️
They could have given the guy some privacy, maybe gone off for another part of the family gathering and then come back after it was all sealed. That guy is obviously under intense scrutiny with everyone watching him like that.
