I admire the care and professionalism you show to the dead. People don’t know how much work goes into preparing a graveside service. I worked part-time at a funeral home for three years, so I know how much manpower goes into this field of work. One thing I would like to ask is if you prefer steel vaults or concrete ones? The funeral home where I worked used concrete only.

    • @336ballistics2

I personally prefer steel over concrete vaults, but then again that’s what I have the most experience with.

@@jkdodge they ALL do NOT leak... IF... there is no damage to the unit when placed in the ground. Concrete vaults are sealed around the underside of the lid and coated with water proof material on all outside surfaces. Steel is also painted and sealed as well but micro cracks over time will lead to rusting out and failure of the water proofing and the entire unit. Concrete will not rust out. Now that said there is a concrete liner that some cemeteries use which is very cheap and only has a flat concrete slab placed on a concrete box with no seal. It is meant only to stop the ground from collapsing and not meant to protect the casket from possible water damage or the elements.

Technology. Vaults used to not be sealed like they are now. They would just drop the casket in and lower the lid down with metal hooks. Problem with that is bodies get exhumed alot for forensic examination to determine if a person was murdered or not. Being that murder has no statute of limitations, a body can be used to provide evidence after several decades. The better a body is preserved the more helpful it will be to find out if that person actually died (coroners are wrong alot). Unsealed vaults tend to flood and well, you can guess how that's going to be after 20 years.

I take 2 of the younger generation men and they lower the vault by squatting down, then two others come from behind and take the poles and lower the rest of the way, I leave the chain in the grave. Then, unlike most services, I have the family put some dirt in. The after they leave I finish with the backhoe.

This is a complicated process indeed for this kind of grave-lowering device! The cemetery where my parents are buried and where I will be also, the vault is put in the ground BEFORE the graveside service, the "grass" is placed down, and wood is laid down around the frame of the grave, then the grave-lowering device is placed on top! The lid of the vault is kept on a truck and after the casket is lowered after everyone leaves, the device is removed, the grass is removed and the vault lid is brought up on a truck that has a crane device on it. There are chains on the crane with hooks on the end. They attach the hooks to the lips on the lid of the vault and it is positioned over the grave, then lowered down to close the vault with the casket already lowered into the vault. It saves SO much time! This set-up is far too involved but it works. I guess it depends on cemetery's preference. This might not have cost them much money as compared to the other way.

That is not a true "vault" . It is a grave liner. A vault is a box that a lid is placed on after the casket is lowered in. Grave liners are when the casket is placed on a base or directly on the earth then the liner covers the casket. Both keep the weight of the earth from caving in the casket. Metal caskets will rust, fatigue, then collapse. Wet climates will ensure this. The collapse will cause a dent over the gravesite. A true vault encloses the casket.

here in the uk we just have two straps, one under the head end and one under the foot end of the coffin then you have 4 bearers who hold the straps and lower the coffin down at the same time, by hand. so much quicker. ive been a bearer seven times in the past and always done it that way and it has worked excellent. i do admire the extra care that goes into lowering a coffin or casket in the US. also we dont normally use vaults. there is no need for that added expense when the casket or coffin is never to be seen again. good video on how you do things across the pond.

Vaults are not required by law where I’m located, however they are typically required by the cemetery’s where the bodies are laid to rest.

Lots of people have issues with accepting the notion of water and soil and other nasties reaching their loved ones in the earth. Some vaults in theory do seal the casket away from all that. But I think the vault is more to keep the grave from caving in, as it otherwise would once the casket succumbs to the elements. Will the vault last forever? Probably not.
      Great video!

minister Christopher middlebrooks church boy That's ridiculous. People pollute enough during life, why continue to do so after death? America needs to seriously reconsider its priorities. I have specified a cardboard coffin for my ultimate disposal, I don't want to be entombed in concrete, metal or plastic for eternity and add to the worlds issues any more than I have to!

Why are there handle rails on the vault? For appearance only?

This is absolute pains-taking meticulous work. However, it seems very extreme to me. If the weight of a vault is between 2,300 and 2,700 pounds, would it be easier to counterbalance with an immovable object, to lower the vault, instead of the, as I said before, meticulous system that is utilized in this video? This video shows great care, indeed and skill, but but seems that it could be done easier. Even 4 strong men could lower a 2500 lb vault with the casket enclosed.

"Yes, I absolutely agree with you on that, but please remember, the person who is deceased will never see all the fuss just for digging a grave, Our Lord Jesus Christ was buried in a simple mountain side tomb, simple cremation and ashes spread at Niagra Falls is super cool"!!!! 😎

I absolutely agree that obviously the person being buried doesn’t see any of what we do, but the family does and we try to do the best to be respectful to the deceased and their loved ones. The type of burial we set up for is purely what the the family of the deceased or the deceased themselves requested prior to their passing.

Our local cemetery’s method is a billion times easier.a boom type vehicle that lowers the vault in the ground and puts the lid on after the casket is lowered in the vault. They could bury 3 people while he does one

    • @markrocovich2234
      @markrocovich2234 2 года назад

The old method of putting the bottom of the vault in the ground first had its problems..dirt would get into the vault while the casket was lowered into it, and more dirt would get in while putting the lid on the vault..Now..the vault bottom is raised above ground level, the casket is placed inside, the seal tape on the vault lid is removed and the lid is set on the vault channel, sealing it..The entire consist of casket and vault if then lowered into the grave..A much neater result..

all I can think about is the amount of tripping hazards next to an open hole....
as a worker, we are taught to clearly mark open trenches and holes and remove all tripping hazards when possible, this guy is like “here let me pile up some unsecured boards then cover them with this pretty green sheet of broken ankles right next to this 6 foot deep hole”
My supervisor would also be wondering where this guys safety glasses are...
