Favorite song of all time. Makes me cry every time. Imagine playbacking to this while it's on full volume through your headphones while you're walking in the Scottish highlands. One of the greatest feelings I've ever experienced.
In "Chess" the musical the tempo is a bit peppier, but the piece concerns a person asked to defect, to betray his country. "Why would I leave her?", he sings after considering the greatness of his nation and its sacrifices for him. It is definitely not funereal at all, but a reasoned love song. "Where would I go?" He has made his decision -- if ever he really had to -- to stay.
I fell in love with the instrumental version because we used to play it with the orchestra. After the performance I looked it up on RUclips. Now i love it even more. I'm Dutch. Twentse to be specific. But I've lived in Oslo for 5 months I got homesick so Ik left early. So glad I didn't know this song back then. I would have ran back on day one.
i began to like this song after watching the musical at the princess of wales theater. jai from BGT did a very powerful performance on this song. the message is so intense that leaves me to tears. beautiful song.
I'm singing this song in an audition for the chance to go on a complete paid trip to New York City and see 3 Broadway Plays and take several theater workshops at the Juliard's college up there. :P Wish me luck people!
@@cristian.martiinezz7037 wow never thought I'd get a reply 7 years later 😂👍 yes made it and it was an awesome trip, ended up moving to LA instead of NYC to do film school, loved the experience!
I've always loved this song, but right now as we near voting day for Scotland's independence it is even more significant to me......I am Scottish but I want us to remain as part of the United Kingdom and it is the United Kingdom I think of when I listen to this song.
Good on you! I know the vote passed and you remained part of the UK and I know that was for the best. It is nice to see a true Scotsman who knows the best for his country was to remain connected to mine along with the rest of the UK. The UK and Scotland are better off as one thing not separate.
Simo2009BORO I was thrilled when the results came through. There's too much divisiveness in the world today...united we stand, right?!!! Voting No cost me dearly....I have a son who has washed his hands of me because of this. Alex Salmond and the SNP have a lot to answer for....they're far too radical to be in charge of Scotland and I just hope that at the next Holyrood elections they don't get a majority because if they do they are going to continue to fight for Scottish independence and I'd absolutely hate that.
no he didn't, he's inconsistent with his control of breath and has little to none musical skills... it's a melodramatic piece with exaggerated brass and a firm melody so people like you can wrap your brain around it without thinking or doing any work..

Jai McDowall did an amazing rendition of this on Britain's Got Talent, this song is just beautiful.
The best version of Anthem is by Jai McDowall. IMO. No wonder he went on to win.
It makes me so sad this beautiful song, serene and dedicated. "Chess" is a deeply emotional work, brings me tears.
This song is awesome. I love it!

A Scandinavian like the song's composers Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeous, who are Swedes and members of the singing group ABBA.
