Josh sang this song at his Stages concert in Toronto on Sept 22, 2015 and I can only describe his performance as stunning and flawless. Part of what made his performance so great was not only his voice but the stance he took. He buttoned up his suit jacket, threw his shoulders back and stood tall. The way he presented himself while singing the song totally matched the words he was singing. Together with the choir he sang with, the finale of the song awe inspiring.
I love his marvelous posture, perfect breathing, and quiet hands. Everything is in his voice and his face, as it should be. A finished artist in every respect.
It's interesting listening to Josh then, and Josh now. His voice has matured, but there's an edge and an intensity in the early days that he doesn't have now - it's all smooth and rich now. Hard to know which I prefer, but I love them both.
Coming here 2 years later lol. I know what you mean. I kind of want to hear his operatic notes again though... But I love his voice then and his voice now.
He would do operatic tenor roles as Calaf in Nessun Dorma, Rodolfo in La boheme, Tamino in The Magic Flute, Alfredo in La traviata, Manrico in Il trovatore, The Duke of Mantova in Rigoletto, Faust in Faust, Hoffmann in The Tales of Hoffmann, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Nemorino in Leslir d'amore, Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca, Radames in Aida, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Canio in Pagliacci, Don Basillo in The Marriage of Figaro, Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte, Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville and Don Jose in Carmen.
Love his voice! Have been a Grobanite from the very beginning. Seen him in concert 3 times he is an amazing talent! He could sing the phone book and make it sound magnificent.
I still don't understand why people insist on commenting on this just to say someone else is better.. If you don't like this version, go listen to a different one. I think Josh's rendition is brilliant.
Stunning vocals. Handsome face! Great performance. Goosebumps! What can i ask for more? He is a legend! Always amazing. God gave him so much gifts! 😍😍😍
This is truly the greatest rendition ever. With Josh's beautiful, clear, rich, majestic, powerful voice, this song is finally given justice and recognition worldwide that it for so long deserved. Thank you so much Josh and it's an honor for me to hear you sing.
No it is not. Josh is a great singer, but lacks the emotion and experience of Tommy Körberg. Listen to Tommys original version and you will understand.
are you kidding? The song was written for Tommy Körberg. This is the best version there is on the planet earth: ruclips.net/video/1xnpfwTkfV0/видео.html

@fille 48 it's good but I personally feel that Joshs more longer held phrases and added vibrato in some sections are just better. However, I'd say I was wrong to call it ass. He is clearly much better than that.
beautiful. my chorus is singing a choral version of this song. today, we watched josh groban's version. i fell in loveeeeee with this song and his voice
My sweetheart... I'm crying - I can't decide because of joy or sadness... even because both... Stunning... You're the BEST Voice ever after. I love You!
@SOAPtheOPERA I agree with you 100% - who cares if there is a slight 'wobble' on his G's, to me its just the raw passion and emotion that he is putting into the song. I love his voice and can listen to it for hours. I sing this song myself and struggle for a perfect G but I don't care as I just love the song
Tommy Korberg you receive the power behind the song. With Josh Groban you receive emotion with the power. Those two are the best one's I have ever heard singing this song. No one can seem to beat them.
I have the dvd of the original chess show back somewhen in the 80ies I think... to see this fantastic musical being performed again with THIS cast is such a great thing!!!
I'm doing this song for my recital. I'm 18 and i've had people tell me this is too high caliber of music for me to be doing yet none of those people have ever heard me sing. I'll see if i can upload the video when my recital is done and just for kicks i might ask my principal if i can perform it at graduation this year since i'm a senior.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video! :) This video takes me back in time when I was in my 20s...I had the honor of playing Florence in a musical review of "Chess." I love this song, especially "I Know Him So Well!" :) I will eventually be adding "I Know Him So Well" to my RUclips Channel. This wonderful song brings back so many wonderful memories! :) Thank you again for sharing this lovely video! :) I subscribed to your channel. Take care and God Bless! :)
Monumental talent. He will be as famous and beloved for his unique voice as Luciano Pavarotti was famous and beloved for his own voice. They are apples and oranges but the level of quality is comparable. To think, Josh Groban has his whole future ahead of him.
@LankySpotlighter93 : It conveys emotion, depth in the music. One composer even wrote his music with one of the strings of the lead violinist tuned off by half a note. It can enhance a feeling of melancholy. In this particular recording, the criticism of the flute was that it was "painful"... in light of the feeling invoked by the lyrics, what a wonderful addition! If intended, it is actually a touch of genius.
If Josh Groban was the star of the Los Angeles Opera or Metropolitan Opera, he would play operatic baritone roles such as Marcello in La boheme, Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, Morales in Carmen, Figaro in The Barber of Seville, Valentin or Wagner in Faust and Papageno in The Magic Flute.
Very beautiful - have a look also at the Welsh version sung by Rhydian with the same excellent choir - it's different - whether 'better' is the listener's choice
For some reason, I like the fact that the only real difference between their suits and Josh’s is the tie color- or at least that’s how the lighting makes it look. Don’t know if that’s standard procedure for backup singers and the primary performer, but somehow it just works.
@MsConstantGardener I guess it is a matter of personal taste, because I listened to Mr. Korberg sing it and although I will admit that he has a wonderful voice, I definately prefer Josh Groban. He is AMAZING!!!
@LankySpotlighter93 Easy to be an armchair critic, you may well be able to perform this song but I doubt you could perform as well as Josh under the circumstances and you probably haven't done it in front of such a large theatre audience, not to mention a worldwide audience given that this was a Royal performance and all..........
It's tough to hear any version other than Tommy's for me as I grew up listening to original cast recordings. Same way Colm Wilkinson is the only Valjean for me and Michael Crawford is the only phantom. Although all credit to him josh covers it nicely.
It's about patriotism. Anatoly is accused of deserting his country and sings this song to put across the point that the borders aren't what truly matters but that in his heart he is still loyal.
Great rendition! I think Körberg is great but just because he was the first Anatoly it doesn't mean he is the best ever. Besides Josh, there are, for example, Michael Ball, Julian Ovenden and Ramin Karimloo, and they are as good as Körberg, but in different ways. And I love listening to all of them! \o/
@Maybenextyear1 It's even more ironic/heartbreaking than that: His character sings that he can never leave Russia (or technically, the Soviet Union) in his heart, even as he is *emigrating* from there and requesting asylum in the U.S...
@LankySpotlighter93 Chris, your version is good (for a 16 year old) but the best principle in life is to respect those who excel at their profession. Implying that your version is better than Josh's is a slight insult. I think Josh is a hugely passionate singer and this is shown in this performance. I think you should simply aspire to be as great as Josh!

I love this. I play it over and over! But Josh could sing ABC's and I'd love it.
What a gift we have been given in him.

That's just the surface meaning. The final line "My land's only borders lie around my heart" is about his new found love for Florence.

Backed by the excellent Welsh choir 'Only Men Aloud'. Well done Josh Groban - fantastic.

Yvette Campos yes. John Owen Jones has the power of Josh Groban, but he can also get up there without strain.
