I asked my late husband to perform this song in his concerts - love the meaning - ...every time the audience was in tears.....
As we live through this dark moment in U.S. history this song holds deeper meaning for me.

I have listened to both Tommy and Josh carefully. Both are great singers! They each have very different voice qualities that make them hard to compare. Josh is a lyric baritone, Tommy a tenor. Tommy is strong, clear, good intonation. Josh, being a baritone with extended upper range, sounds bigger, richer, fuller, and he also has great intonation. When Josh "unleashes the beast" as he says, he has the power of a 747 on take off. This was a common comment on his Anthem at the live RAH production in 2008. People who had never heard him were stunned! Rarely does anyone get standing ovations in the middle of a production. It comes down to personal preference, but I prefer Joshes version because of his good emotion, and the very quality of his baritone voice. He is just unique.

Whoever orchestrated this version NEEDS to do the whole score! This number gives me chills EVERY TIME!
It sounds good here, but there are far too many instruments than they could afford to have in a traditional orchestra pit for regular performances.

Dang, Josh! You sang the heck out of that song! I have heard many versions, but yours gave me goosebumps! You NEVER cease to amaze.
I must admit, this song was not on my radar until I fully comprehend the lyrics. It made such a huge impact on me that I started to savour the song more intensely rather than casually. Then, Josh bowled me over with his breath- taking vocal elevating the song to be included on my Play List.

I bought the Stages CD for my Dad in 2018 it was his first time he had heard Josh Groban sing and he was hooked to the point of playing the cd endlessly personally don't blame him but he passed away 3 weeks ago so many songs he had not heard Josh singing such a shame this song was his favourite right until the end so fitting for my Dad such a strong song for a strong man love you always my wonderful father xxx
As a child of the 60s I have never been a nationalist and anthems generally make my flesh creep. But this one, precisely because it is not the anthem of any country (although in the story it is sung by a Russian about his own country) is worthy of every country. "My land's only borders lie around my heart!" brings me to tears every time I hear it.

Why do anthems give you the creeps? I’m a child of the ‘60s also, and never had that reaction to our national anthem. Just curious.

When you say our national anthem, are you referring to the Australian NA? If so, one example will do. How do you feel about the words "for we are young and free"?

I always want to stand when I hear this song. In the context of the play, the singer is singing about a specific country but the text is moving to anyone with a homeland. And your performance is stirring.

Czechoslovakia (which by the way doesn't exist since it peacefully split into two independent countries in 1993) has an anthem that was written by a playwrighter back in the 19th century. This song Josh interprets was written for the musical Chess (meaning the game chess).
In other words - you don't know, since you didn't answer the question, just gave a smart-ass reply.
I do - Josh played a role of a Russian chess player in the musical, so the anthem was written to represent that country. And yes, I am a smartass, thank you for the compliment!

When my mom passed away on Halloween 2020 this song became special to me because I think that the she and her in the song can be translated into love for one's mother country or a mum as well. I may not be expressing myself correctly but for me there has always been a lover in equal measure of my mother country The US and the countries of my ancestors Ireland and The UK as well as The Commonwealth.
As a Humanist I've arranged to have this sung at my funeral. Life is to short for all the fighting that's going on in this world of ours. Just wish Josh Groban couldn't be the soloist!!😊

I love this version, but I grew up listening to the original with Tommy, hearing it on vinyl, watching him on TV performing the Anthem with a huge choir and, just wow. There's no comparison really. All kudos to Josh for an amazing version though.

If you watch an older rendition of him singing this song compared to now you will notice a difference. I prefer this version. He has embraced a kind of mixed pop-operatic style that make him much more unique and stand out more compared to other singers.
Every time I hear this and Josh Groban I think of my Hungarian heritage and Budapest.

I am a huge Josh Groban fan and can honestly say there is nothing in his repitoire that I don't like. However I do have my favorites and this is probably No. 1. I play it so much I am sure my neighbors know the song off by heart too. He is such an amazing singer in so many genres of music. I just wish he would come back to Australia when this pandemic is over, and do a lot of concerts. It has been too long.
