My father was in the first battalion of the Irish defence force in 1938. Irish speaker with Irish name.when I researched I thought it wasn't my father because of the name.

Having worked with the Irish Defence Force in Cyprus with a blue beret, I was impressed with their professionalism. I thought they could have had better kit, and they seemed to have few officers commissioned from the ranks which seemed to be a waste of some very well motivated NCO's.

Well put together, lets hope that national budgets will provide funding for a sovereign nation to maintain its sovereignty without the assistance of Eurocrats and those not elected outside the State.

Was it not nineteen sixty eight when the actual troubles started.
Ireland wasn't friendly with the British during the emergency years.
The British and the Americans had blockaded Ireland because of our Neutrality and because we won't give our ports to the war effort.
Dev and Churchill actually openly expressed their differences and their dislike to one another and barred Irish citizens from joining the allied forces.
This is what had been told to us.
The Irish confiscated aircraft, jeeps and other military vehicles and equipment from the allies when they crossed the border or landed, air and crossed into Irish waters and held personnel of the allied and axis personal within the Curragh camp for the duration of the emergency.
The military isn't as well trained as it used to be especially basic training, if watching the recruits program on rte.
Now they're going to change the name of the ARW which I do believe is a big mistake.
I believe that an forsa Cosanta Inial and an Slua Muiri should be reinstated to compliment the Defence Forces of Ireland, the Reserve Defence forces should also be a separate force for both the naval and army with also a new reserve and establishment of a air defense arm of the Aer Corp in a PDF and a Reserve role.
Better funding of the Defence Forces and reinstate the apprenticeships within all areas of the DF Civil and Militarily. Facilities should be reestablished as training posts either as joint Garda Military training facilities self contained with first response medical search and rescue and rapid response units of the DF and of an Garda Siochana. DF - army aircorp naval coast Guard Civil Defence an FCA an Slua Muiri plus other new elements. An Garda- Garda Reserve, Special Branch, SRU and community and traffic units.
Based within the Northwest and along the border area would have their own joint facilities.

@@chopchung I get what your saying but a lot of wars aren't just minerals it's power and control too but ireland is actually wealthy and rich but it all goes to the private sector and the politicians and rich people which is why a majority of ireland is people struggling with buying or renting houses even electricity and heating is hella expensive here

Service of the state??? To dedicate 21 plus of your life to an organisation that's consistently shit on by successive governments, and to obey bullies and predators who see the men and women they command as nothing but stepping stones to further their own careers, to turn a blind eye to blatant bullying, harassment and assault.
Service to the state indeed, and to add insult to injury, when your time is done your cast aside.
