I had always imagined Julian Sands playing the part of Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast from the novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child when I read those books years ago. 😢
I heard a story of a man who had climbed Mt Baldy almost (or over) 800 times and he ended up dying on the mountain. As someone who loves hiking and has gone out alone, these stories are having me think twice. May he rest in peace 😢❤️
Same. I get to go so seldom though I usually go for it when I can. Admittedly, I am not as confident or competent as I was at 25. I may be smarter and better prepared, but I don't have the endurance I used too.
In the fall or winter, the air up those mountains gets cold very quickly when the sun drops over the peaks. Also, it is easy to become dehydrated because the cold tricks one's body into not registering thirst. We hiked a couple miles from Baldy Village the November before Julian Sands hiked; I was reminded of how it might have be easy for him to have become dehydrated if he was not drinking enough water.
Just make sure you have a satellite phone. You ain’t gettin’ it from AT&T or Verizon, either - they have special, dedicated carriers for them. I’m looking into getting a sailboat, and the first thing i looked into was survival equipment. They have packages for service, but it’s roughly $50/mo., on top of the device (which isn’t made by Apple or Samsung).
My husband loved hiking and we went on our first trip to hike Mt. Baldy. He also previously dared himself to hike the Santa Monica Mountains (the backbone trail) for a full 24hrs but he did have some friends meet him at certain ppoints. I guess if you are going to hike alone at least provide people your route and time frames.
It's been almost 40 years since I first saw Julian Sands in The Killing Fields. I thought he was one of the most beautiful men I had ever laid eyes upon. He was also a very talented actor who kept busy throughout his four-decade career. So sorry that he died such a terrible and lonely death.
Such a tragic story. RIP Julian, and I know this may sound shallow, but young Julian Sands with his long blond hair, was one of the most beautiful men I’ve ever seen.
I was reading about Julian Sands when he was declared missing. An article had said it was a surprise ice storm & there were 14 other climbers who needed to be rescued. Julian Sands was not amongst them. He was reportedly John Malkovich best friend, they'd grown up together, etc. Malkovich reportedly said that whatever happened to his skilled climber friend, it was quick & unrecoverable. The way you covered this tragedy was respectful & compassionate.
As a 90s teenager, I was a fan of Julian Sands (I remember first watching him in the 1989 film 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬, on VHS). Ever since his disappearance in January, I had been checking for updates. Thanks for this overall summary of events, Dr. Grande.
Hiking can turn deadly very suddenly. Please make certain that people know where you are going and take extra clothing, water and food. Have something to start a fire. A small GPS unit could save your life. Rest in Peace Julian.
He was taking chances. The top of Mt. Baldy is called "the devils backbone" it's narrow with drop-offs on both sides! The day he was up there, that trail was also covered with ice and snow. I'll do that trail in the summer, but not in the winter. Lots of people have died there from falls and uncontrolled slides.
He probably had some thrills about the challenge of going up there under harsh conditions. That’s my guess. Perhaps he had done it before without issue.
We had hiked a couple of miles from Baldy Village (a good sized group of people) in November before Julian Sands disappeared. It got really cold when the sun went over the peaks. We took a hand held radio with us to test the reception, which was spotty until we got down the mountain to about 3,000 feet. I would not hike Mt. San Antonio alone without a GPS, and never with less than a group of at least four experienced hikers.
People would be surprised how quickly someone can get into trouble. I have gotten into trouble just by hiking on slopes that were unexpectedly icy on the surface. Sometimes the sun melts the snow in the afternoon, and then the melted snow turns to ice overnight. You might think that you're taking a leisurely morning stroll along a gentle slope, but before you know it, that slope is a little steeper than you think, and it's iced over. It can get kind of scary. I've slid dozens of yards that way more than once, unable to get any traction. If that happened in the wrong place, it could end badly.
i used to live in a highrise on Doheny Avenue at Sunset Boulevard, and would wAtCh the sun come up over those San Bernardino Mountains every morning. i did not know Mount Baldy by name until today. Sad story, of Mr. Sands, tho it’s ᵃ remarkable way to go out.
I've never heard it to have a bad wrap unless you're near campsites with all the parties that go on. When I went we never slept at a camp site but decided to set up on the top of a rocky hill. In July it was odd having a little snow up there. I don't ever car camp I backpack in. I wanted to show my husband that even though I come from an affluent home we still had to rough it because school required us to backpack for a week for every year.
RIP Julian Sands. I've known his name since I first saw him in the 80s. There was something so loveable about his manner, and he had a gentleman's way of speaking. I will always remember him. My heart was broken 💔 when I heard he was found deceased in that way. No one could have deserved that defeat less. 😢😢
This winter was one of the worst in SoCal in decades, with record snowfall that nobody expected. Having done it so many times before, he knew what to expect from normal winter conditions, but these were far from normal. He was probably still alive after whatever mishap waylaid him the first night, but five days of snow prevented rescuers from finding him in time and eventually did him in.
Why oh why didn't he bring a satellite phone? It's not like he couldn't afford one. This is so sad - I really loved him ever since Room With A View - he made every character he played a major one, even if it was a minor role.
I haven't read a detailed report, but Dr. Grande's narrative makes it sound like the clothes might have been in a pile away from the body. If that's the case, it suggests paradoxical undressing and a death from hypothermia.
Mount baldy is very dangerous. One of my friends from high school passed away there he was hiking and it was icy and he rescued a girl because she was slipping and he ended up falling. I went to his funeral. It was really sad.
As the hikers found him with his boots off and next to a pile of clothes makes me think that he had hypothermia as that makes a person disorientated and they mistakenly think they are too hot and will remove their clothes. A body laying in the open for so long would also be eaten by wild animals. I think he made a mistake by going out totally unprepared for the conditions where he was walking.
Could easily be the case, unless it simply looked like a pile of clothes due to his final resting position (had he fallen) and the tragic fact that all that was left was bones. It must be awful for the people who found him, as well as his loved ones.
I grew up and currently live within 20 miles of Mt. Baldy. Been there many times for snowboarding, hiking and off-roading. I'll be spending a weekend up there next month. It truly is a dangerous mountain, and people from all around Southern California consistently underestimate it due to its proximity to LA and unintimidating size. It's a much more difficult hike than it looks. The weather is unpredictable and the trails are treacherous. Also, despite being in Los Angeles County, cell phones don't always work around there. I lost a friend to that mountain a few years back, and he was very experienced and prepared. Inexperienced people consistently get lost or stranded up there and require rescue. My guess from the moment I heard he went missing is that he slid off the mountain and ended up stranded in a snowy valley below. Because of the extremes in temperature on the mountain - snowy and frigid at night followed by clear and warm the next morning - it's common that the trails get icy after the snow melts and refreezes. Happens all the time. He also went up at the absolute worst time. To say we got a storm after he arrived is an understatement. We got one of the worst storms in recent years during a winter of consistently rough weather. Baldy and other mountains got snowpack we haven't seen in generations. Once that snow came, survival just wasn't possible. The elements were terrible for anyone on the mountain, and help would have been unable to come for week.
I'm from Colorado, a state that is full of hiker and mountaineer types and it always amazes me how so many of these people go out unprepared even after years of experience. They think, oh, I'll just go out for short hike, then the clouds roll in, it starts to snow (obscuring the trail), then the wind kicks up, the temperature drops 50 degrees and there they are in shirt sleeves, shorts and flip flops.
It seems Julian Sands was a little better prepared than shorts and flip flops. 😂 I get your point. Seriously, though, it surprised me to hear that he was observed hiking in black clothing. As a Scouter, we know to wear light or bright colors when we hike/whatever. Also, it seems that he did not leave a detailed hike plan, so it is unknown how long overdue he was when he was reported missing. What I am curious about is if any calls/texts were attempted from his cell phone. The terrain up Mt. San Antonio/Mt. Baldy is hard pack and scrabbly in some places, it is easy to slide out on inclines. 'So many questions.
True, but surprise storms in SoCal are pretty rare. (Although, like everywhere, "surprise storms" are becoming less surprising these days.) And the storm that got Julian Sands came in much harder and faster than expected. But he really should have had a satellite phone. And wearing black is not smart.
Who was that? I don't remember hearing that, my friends uncle worked on the Hateful 8 he did something with the photography, but that movie was filmed mostly in Colorado and a little in Wyoming and he said the conditions were crazy
You're kind of assuming the companion will be some sort of survival expert. A companion doesn't make much of a difference if you're both ill prepared. You'll both die. I would argue you don't need company. You need a satellite phone, locator beacon, and appropriate clothing and gear.
@@MakerInMotionAbsolutely. As a matter of fact Dr Grande covered 2 cases of couples dying in the wilderness from lack of preparation. They both had their babies with them and one even brought their dog.
I so loved his acting in “Room with a View”. What a talent! Having lived in the SoCal area my entire life and in the shadows of Mt. Baldy, this hit hard. It is funny how one’s parents’ words never leave us. My late father always told me that the Los Angeles area mountains were especially treacherous as folks did not take their hazards seriously and folks often visited them unprepared and ill informed. In the 70s my father joined our youth hiking club as we gleefully summited Mt. Baldy. I vividly recall the day, but sadly no one took pictures of such events in those days. I see the mountain daily as I drive here and there, and my dad’s words resound with that lovely view as I remember the tragic loss of Mr. Sands and so many others through the years.
Wow this really saddens me. A Room With a View still is my top 10 fave movies of all time. I'm a Gen Xer, who typically detested period pieces but that one really got to me. 😢 RIP, Julian.
I think this was the first period piece movies I ever fell in love with, and it had much to do with Mr. Sands. In high school we would pop this into the VCR during girls' weekends and rewind the pond/creek bathing scene over and over.
That would be a terrifying way to go. Being trapped somewhere all alone and dying this way is so sad. I can't imagine dying by murder, being lost on a mountain (or anywhere) alone, or eaten by a shark. My heart goes out to his family, the feeling of being so helpless to find your lost loved one has got to be so painfully excruciating. Thank you for another interesting case, Dr Grande!! ❤
it was no suicide mission but my first thought would be did he (knowing that he had no other way out of the canyon) leave a msg or last will? maybe it's kept private but very sad to know he died alone. I do think he didn't think he was going for a long hike and his wife was expecting him down the mountian that same day....possibly the reason he wasn't carrying a back pack. love the coverage of his final day on this planet Dr Grande!!!! Means alot coming fr a Julian Sands follower and movie lover RIP Mr Sands 🏔🌚🌹
I did really enjoy this video Dr Grande. I was a very important reminder that just because we think we know a place; doesn’t mean we can let our guard down. Excellent analysis!
This has nothing to do with Dr Grande’s excellent video, but it’s just one of those “oh really?” Things. A couple years ago fell into a “rabbit hole” reading everything I could find about the Guinness family. It started with a book about Tara Guiness, who was the guy “who blew his mind out in a car “ in the Beatles song A Day In The Life. Julian Sands wife, Eugenia (I think that’s her name) is a distant cousin of Tara Guinness and one of the Guinness “heirs” (there’s a lot of them so I don’t really know how much they actually inherit. Her mother was the author Lady Caroline Blackwood who was something of an “it” girl in London back in the day. Eugenia is a writer herself. Her younger sister Ivona wrote a book about growing up with their mom which was fascinating. I think it’s called “Why not just tell the truth?” And it refers to the fact nobody would ever tell her who her real father was (she found out as an adult when she and the three likely candidates took DNA tests). Anyway I just wanted to share that. RIP Mr Sands. I really hope your death was not as painful as Dr Grand thinks it was. 😢
Dr. Grande, you left out the possibility of a *medical emergency* leading to his death. At his age, even if no prior health problem is recorded, there is the possibility of something like a heart attack or stroke that leads to someone’s incapacity. In this case, he would’ve been stuck in the miserable conditions that you outlined.
No matter how amazing your health, how experienced or how young you are you should never hike alone. If something goes wrong you have absolutely no one to help you. It's the same with diving and thats why you have diving buddies. No satellite phone just suicide.
@@ohsweetmysteryI would suggest that you ask yourself why you had the need to insult someone giving good advice. Sometimes it's so easy to be cruel, especially to someone you don't know on the internet.
Dr. Grande, here's a tip for you. Did you know that there was a juvenile murder inspired by a Julian Sands movie? A 14-year-old boy, Sandy Charles, who killed a 7-year-old, Johnathan Thimpsen, and then boiled his flesh in imitation of the movie “Warlock”, one of Sands' cult classics. You should cover that case!
wow, never heard about that, how awful! Yes, I think Grande would be great at discussing the topic of media influence on people and children who kill. Even with his wicked sense of humor, he handles tough topics with sensitivity.
Wtf, how strange that I have never heard of this murder considering how extremely rare of a child to boil another childs body, he must have been totally insane.
Since Room with a view I knew his name and liked him very much as an actor. His lonely, premature death makes me sad. Thanks for your analysis, that also was like a beautiful obituary, Dr. Grande.
Thank you so much for covering this. I was very saddened to learn he had "disappeared" hiking the mountain. I remember when I was a teen, I had such a crush on him, especially seeing him in a Room With A View. He was very unique and very gaunt and handsome. Apparently, Ann Rice wanted him to play LeStat in Interview with a Vampire, and he very much would have fit the bill, but the studio wanted a "bigger" name so they got Tom Cruise. Anyway, RIP dear Mr. Sands. I am sad to know has final days were painful, I can only hope he passed out quickly and thereafter died.
He would have been a beautiful and perfect Lestat. Especially with Anne Rice wants you!! The kiss in Room with a View will forever be one of the most romantic cinematic kisses ever!!
@@hnybee113My favorite passionate kiss was between William Hurt and Raoul Julia in 'Kiss of the Spiderwoman.' It's my favorite film AND book, excluding mathematics books (I'm a mathematician 😊)!
I was very fortunate to see Julian Sands reading excerpts from Harold Pinter’s “comedy of menace” plays & writings. Sands came alive on stage at Chicago’s Steppenwolf theater. That precise British accent was perfect. Attractive, full of gravitas , Sands also shared personal stories about Pinter. It was quite the evening.
As a person who has trekked up Mt. Baldy many times I can see how this scenario has repeated itself many times over the years. There are areas that the trail traverses that have very steep sides. In the summer it is ice free and safe. In the winter if you slip on the ice you might not stop for 1000+ vertical feet. You will be likely be severely injured or dead when you do stop and far from the trail, likely obscured by trees. Access is easy and you can summit and easily be home for dinner. In the summer on a weekend there will be many people on the trail. Some winters there is little to no snow. All this leads to a false sense of security. As soon as I saw the title I knew it would be in the winter months. Sure enough January .
I was saddened to hear that he was missing, but glad for his family and those who cared about him that they were able to have his remains. Rest in peace.
I climbed Mt Baldy once and it was not easy coming down. Perhaps his age was a factor as well. Some things we do in our 20s, 30s and even 40s will not be same in your 50s and 60s. Sometimes people push that envelope because they may be fighting the reality of the age factor that that can change everything
This was really underreported. I told my bro when it was happening because he was kind of a fan of his, we both hoped it would end differently but after a week... It's pretty sad what happened and that no one seemed to care.
How is it underreported, was local news suppose to cover this everyday he was missing . Lots of folks go missing hiking in the San Gabriel Valley all the time. KTLA, KCAL, KABC etc covered his story.
I live south of Mt. San Antonio/Mt. Baldy. Julian Sands' disappearance was not underreported. We heard about it daily for weeks (radio, social media). We had done a short group hike from Baldy Village in November, before Julian Sands' hike: When the sun dropped below the mountains, the air got cold quickly. Mr. Sands went up during a period of rain, and it rained like crazy in the days after his disappearance which may have been why it was reported so often.
@@georgiegirl8345omg me too. It saddens me greatly to know he has passed and alone. 😢I’m glad people did not give up hope looking for him, at least his family finally and sadly knows and he can properly be buried per his or his family’s wishes. He was one of my most favorite actors. R.I.P. Julian Sands 🥺😢
I've always enjoyed Julian Sands as an actor.... he was one of those actors who always gave class to the characters he played. I think you did a great job with this video.... tastefully done and great message at the end.
I used to be an adrenaline junkie...liked taking risks. Til I took a few that cost me more than I could afford. I’m still adventurous but I calculate the risks. Dying is not on my bucket list 😊
I think this doesn't seem like thrill seeking per se but more like what Dr Grande said, he had gone up there so many times he started to think nothing could happen to him in there and didn't prepare sufficiently.
@@pamelapamper I read most car accidents happen close to home, and household accidents are common. Yes when you’re guard is down you can make mistakes sometimes fatal ones.
I was hiking on the PCT trying to hike up mount baldy. I got lost. Very lost. I knew there were lots of people somewhere close to me, but it took 2 hours to find the trail again. I was never happier to find the summit and 40 hikers were there sitting enjoying the view
I'm not meaning to be patronising, but please ALWAYS carry a map, know your exact route, and take a proper compass (know how to use a compass too), so you know the direction you're going in. And unless there are known magnetic anomalies in the region you are hiking, ALWAYS believe what your compass is showing, despite what your brain might be telling you. (Speaking as an ex-mountain guide)
oh man I wasnt aware of his death. It come a a sad surprise. Even though I haven't seen him in much lately his work left enough of impression to make it even more sad to know he never will assist in entertaining. RIP.
IMO Julian Sands' best role was as the great pianist and composer Franz Liszt in "Impromptu." The rest of the cast was great too: Hugh Grant, Judy Davis, Bernadette Peters, and Emma Thompson. The story was a hilarious satire set in early 19th C. France, with celebrities like Liszt invited to stay and be pampered at the country estates of star-struck nobles. My description isn't doing the show justice -- Watch it if you get a chance.
RaysDad ~ you beat me to it, i was just about to say that! his portrayal of franz liszt was brilliant. and the way his hair swayed while playing the piano, ah gorgeous man! may his memory be a blessing! 🕊️ thank you kindly dr. grande for doing this piece on julian sands. xx
Mt. San Antonio/Mt.Baldy is almost 40 miles from Los Angeles, in San Bernardino County. It is due north of where I live and is best hiked in groups. The air is thin, windy, and icy in the winter. May Mr. Sands rest in peace.
What you are saying is so true. Things can change with age. What, in the past might have been easy on your body and your reflexes might be keen. These traits can deteriorate with age. It is a good idea to keep the stages of life in perspective to avoid fatal danger or serious injury. He was great in Room With A View, a classic film! Wishing him peace in the next world!
My good friend met him at an airport in 1990. He was very kind and gracious to her. I remember when she told me we both screamed and we were in our 30’s!
I was stationed on Mt. Baldy in the early 70's, on a Nike missile base. We were at about 5000 feet. And yes, the surrounding terrain was challenging. I was there for 18 months and during that time I had to take part in 2 search missions to find soldiers that had decided to go exploring. They were both found quickly because the search began right away based on the rigid schedule we had to follow. They were missed right away. And yes, we were strictly forbidden to go exploring, but everyone knows how impulsive and cocksure of themselves young men can be.
I've done Baldy many times. Had a few sketchy winter hikes myself and could easily see where things could go horribly wrong. There are actually crashes planes relatively close to where he was found.
I live near Chino, CA and Mt. Baldy is a beautiful backdrop to my town. I recognized Julian Sands as soon I saw his picture. Very sad story. Rest in Peace Mr. Sands. Thank you for covering this Dr. G. Every winter there’s a demographic of families that drive up towards Mt. Baldy to see the snow. That’s always concerned me about all of the mountain towns out here. People park on the side of the road and let their kids use very thin and disposable plastic spheres (or homemade sleds) to ride down the sides of ridges. I do hope both lay people and professionals realize the dangers involved with ice and mountains. 🙏❤️❄️☃️
Well I'll be darned... I didn't know Julian Sands was born in Otley, West Yorkshire or grew up in Gargrave! (which is in North Yrks) 😲 I'm originally from North Yorkshire & lived near the village of Gargrave & worked there for a few years. I read all the news of Julian missing, very sad. His son searched again in June & apparently - in an area only meters away from where his father's body was found! What a shame he didn't have a GPS tracker, etc. I don't agree with you saying he died a 'horrible & agonizing death'... NO PROOF OF THAT WHATSOEVER!! it could have been instant, or shortly after he fell, a heart attack, or even once hypothermia set in would be quick.
Dr. Grande ! I absolutely love your voice, it’s so calming and helps me get to sleep. Maybe in the future you could make a 2-3 hr compilation video of a rain/dark screen with your audio?? 🎧🌧
I remember meeting Julian in London back in the 90s. He was so tall and graceful… He reminds me of some ethereal elf from a Tolkien book. He was soft-spoken, kind, and gracious… a true gentleman. RIP
my favorite movie role he played in was "warlock", he really fit that part, however, i did like his role in "gothic", a ken russell movie, all of ken russell movie's are eccentric, weird, electic, artsy, but i like that, never boring.
Julian proved that any man was capable of being a romantic hero in A Room with a View and he also taught us in Warlock that even the most terrifying being could be frustrated by mere mortals even though the mortals were admittedly not very bright. There can’t be too many actors that could have played both of those roles and understood exactly what was needed to make them great.
Has anyone seen the 1993 movie, "Boxing Helena"? That's the movie i know him from. It appeared to be cheaply made but included a popular song of the day. That movie shocked me, & I have never forgotten it, probably because I was just out of college, single, & living alone. I may have to watch it again!
Yes, my roommate & I saw it. Like you, we were in our 20s & just out of school. It had the same effect on us too. It was eerie & dark, but Julian Sands was perfect for that role. He is missed. Rest in Peace JS, Memory Eternal.
It astounds me that you can just keep belting out videos that are this well-researched and well thought out at this pace. It inspires me to find an outlet for all the things that I have to say about all the topics I research just for my own interests. In regards to this particular video, I think it's a very respectful look at the situation. And in general when you have so many possibilities for what could have led to the same outcome, I think that quantifiably demonstrates all the risks that were being stacked up here. Risk stacking is something that is talked about a lot in aviation, as well as the "Swiss cheese effect", where each layer of safety is treated as a different slice, and the more you have and the fewer holes there are, the less likely it will be for at least one hole to line up in every single slice, creating a clear path through the stack. In general though you can apply the Swiss cheese effect to any risky situation. In this case, he didn't have many layers in the stack (since he lacked certain gear or a satellite phone), and there were lots of holes in it - poor equipment choices, hiking right before a storm in winter, being alone, hiking in a particularly perilous area, etc. The more barriers of safety you have, The less statistically likely it is for something bad to happen.
I didn’t see Julian sands in many things but I enjoyed his performances when I saw him. I am sorry to hear about his accidental death. I hope others take his warning to be prepared, not lackadaisical, seriously.
I live very close to Mt. Baldy. Love Julian Sands. When he disappeared on the Mountain it was particularly snowy and cold at that time. He died doing what he loved.
Very sad. Always liked him although he seemed to suit very particular roles. Always interesting to watch. Wish he’d been in a few more movies. I predominantly remember him in late 80s early 90s films.
Very well said, Dr. G!!! The saying "pride comes before a fall" seems to sum up what happens to people who get too confident and do dangerous things unprepared. So sad for Julian's family, but it sounded like he was doing what he loved. . .
First saw him in Rose Red, then as I grew I saw more and more of his films and absolutely loved what he brought to his characters. When I first heard of his disappearance and the circumstances I knew that it would not be good, and am so saddened we lost such a man. The elements are no joke, and should never be taken lightly, even for those with experience. Stay safe out there everyone. 💔
Boxing Helena! He was a favorite of mine. I hate that he (or anyone) suffered but somehow his disappearance was a seemingly appropriate way for him to go. RIP, and thanks for the memories.
I met Julian Sands at a climbing gym in So Cal in the 90s. He was quite friendly and we had a short conversation about his upcoming project, "Leaving Las Vegas". Having also climbed Mt. Baldy numerous time, I've seen my share of unsafe practices and ill equipped climbers. The mentality being, it's in So Cal so how dangerous can it be. Same can be said for San Jacinto near Palm Springs, especially during the summer months when temp reach three digits. RIP Julian Sands.
I've always been a fan of Sands. He never seemed to achieve the stardom I thought he deserved. Beautiful summary, doctor Grande. Rest In Peace, Julian.
Thank you my friend. It was your awesome portrayal of the ultimate evil that gave me my nickname that has stuck with me since high school. May you RIP.
I used to backpack & climb in the Rockies and at a minimum I always had crampons & ice axe and a bivy sack with insulation and a signaling device. Doesn’t weight much if you get the right gear and winter in the mountains is no place to go ultralight in.
If conditions mean that an ice axe is needed, then a course on how to use an ice axe (a winter training course) is vital too. There are too many stories of people being "prepared", but not knowing exactly how to use their equipment.
RIP, Julian. You always added an element of class to every movie and TV show you appeared in.
Who is this guy?
I agree completely. He was always a unique presence in his movies; always classy and always good
I had always imagined Julian Sands playing the part of Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast from the novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child when I read those books years ago. 😢
he was really good in that Danzig Western

Malkovich reportedly said that whatever happened to his skilled climber friend, it was quick & unrecoverable.
The way you covered this tragedy was respectful & compassionate.
As a 90s teenager, I was a fan of Julian Sands (I remember first watching him in the 1989 film 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬, on VHS). Ever since his disappearance in January, I had been checking for updates. Thanks for this overall summary of events, Dr. Grande.
I was gonna mention that film. I still have the VHS tape.
I really enjoyed watching that film. There was even a video game based on it.
It doesn’t quite hold up to the test of time but I remember watching it as a kid and absolutely loving it
i used to watch warlock 2 all of the time, it was on late night cable all of the time.
Warlock 2 for me! Loved it and had it on VHS.
Yes, people become absolutely too confident in their skills. You have to take precautions.
I enjoyed his acting and feared for his life when he went missing. My condolences to his loved ones.
He was the Warlock! 💫
That and Boxing Helena made him famous in my circles as a teen for sure.

Yess.. a Jack Black/Probot call-back 🎉
Great movie actually...👍
The one and only!
Mount Baldy has a bad reputation. A well deserved bad reputation. Julian Sands is only the latest victim. Tragic.
i used to live in a highrise on Doheny Avenue at Sunset Boulevard, and would wAtCh the sun come up over those San Bernardino Mountains every morning. i did not know Mount Baldy by name until today. Sad story, of Mr. Sands, tho it’s ᵃ remarkable way to go out.
Went there to drink beer and smoke pot with some friends back in high school. Glad we didn’t test its terrain in our inebriated state
I've never heard it to have a bad wrap unless you're near campsites with all the parties that go on. When I went we never slept at a camp site but decided to set up on the top of a rocky hill. In July it was odd having a little snow up there. I don't ever car camp I backpack in. I wanted to show my husband that even though I come from an affluent home we still had to rough it because school required us to backpack for a week for every year.
Sad, I had no idea he passed, I very much enjoyed his acting.
@@GetSicRiCHyou could see Mt Baldy from sunset blvd?
That's true...One of the worst winters we've had in CA.
@@jamesbowman6925. Absolutely.
Mount baldy is very dangerous. One of my friends from high school passed away there he was hiking and it was icy and he rescued a girl because she was slipping and he ended up falling. I went to his funeral. It was really sad.
That is so sad 😢
My condolences, I hope you are feeling better now.
Thats exactly what i thought when i heard that, he got disoriented and lost and hypothermia
So sad.😔🙏
David Paulides has covered this many times
Could easily be the case, unless it simply looked like a pile of clothes due to his final resting position (had he fallen) and the tragic fact that all that was left was bones. It must be awful for the people who found him, as well as his loved ones.
@@ambrosiaemryssunfire4868thank you for the information! x
The eye movement and general look Dr. Grande gives when he says he's "only speculating" never fails to incite this tickling laughter inside my tummy.
same 🤣
This was an incredible tribute to Sands. Extremely respectful. I've heard his story before, but I've never heard such a poignant way of honoring him.
@elliebellie7816..Nicely stated..😉👌
Basically I think no one should ever go hiking alone. Quinten Tarantino's longtime editor also died while on a hike alone, of heat exhaustion.
Who was that? I don't remember hearing that, my friends uncle worked on the Hateful 8 he did something with the photography, but that movie was filmed mostly in Colorado and a little in Wyoming and he said the conditions were crazy
Agree
Where is the line between taking a walk and going hiking?
Well said! Thank you for sharing such pleasant memories😊.
He was wonderful and I just loved that film, too. I'll always remember him as George Emerson.
@@vbrown6445 Yessss!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
"His final act was a somber reminder to honor the majesty and the dangerousness of the mountain that he loved." Drop that mic Dr. Grande!
I did really enjoy this video Dr Grande. I was a very important reminder that just because we think we know a place; doesn’t mean we can let our guard down. Excellent analysis!
Exactly.
as a fellow west yorkshireman i am proud of his acting success and happy his body was found
This has nothing to do with Dr Grande’s excellent video, but it’s just one of those “oh really?” Things. 😢
I’ve been a fan of Julian Sands since the 1980s, when I saw him in A Room With A View. RIP Julian. You will be missed. 😢
Me too, I had a crush on him from A Room with a View. So sad. RIP, Julian, you are missed.
Let me guess, you have had 15 covid booster shots and wear a mask 24/7.
Good advice! There are numerous stories, too many to mention in a RUclips post, of lone hikers going missing.

I didn't hear of that one. I loved that movie. How horrific. People are monsters.
wow, never heard about that, how awful! Yes, I think Grande would be great at discussing the topic of media influence on people and children who kill. Even with his wicked sense of humor, he handles tough topics with sensitivity.
@@morticiaheisenberg9679 me too, he was truly scary in that film, as a child it terrified me more than any other psychotic villain.

He would have been the perfect Lestat. RIP Julian.

Sure enough January .
yes...at same time this happened a hispanic woman who had summitted many times...slipped and fell off the mountain.
I was saddened to hear that he was missing, but glad for his family and those who cared about him that they were able to have his remains. Rest in peace.
Thanks for covering. I'd not heard about his missing case. I enjoyed him as an actor.
This is such a sad case. I've been a fan of his for a long time, and is surreal to see that this is how his life ended. RIP.
This is the first I’ve heard of this. Saddened to know this.

I had such a crush on him as a kid since Warlock, and even more so for the creepy Boxing Helena. RIP
I've done Baldy many times. Had a few sketchy winter hikes myself and could easily see where things could go horribly wrong. There are actually crashes planes relatively close to where he was found.

Hey this is a good one to cover, Dr. Grande. I was sad to hear what happened to him. I look forward to your analysis!.
What a grotesque ending for the supporting roles actor.
I’m literally hiking in California right now, and the fog is so thick, going to run home now!
Hope you're ok! 🤞🤗
Well said . Stay aware and be prepared. As you mentioned any chanfe in condition can supply the saddened results that dont end well.
I've seen this guy in so many movies. It's crazy that he is missing.
He’s not missing anymore they found him dead.
A good dramatic actor went out in a dramatic way. He left a mystery behind him and went out famous. RIP Julian Sands.
You forgot to mention Warlock.
Very well said, Dr. G!!! The saying "pride comes before a fall" seems to sum up what happens to people who get too confident and do dangerous things unprepared. So sad for Julian's family, but it sounded like he was doing what he loved. . .
You don't know what happened, stop assuming.
Very well presented Dr as always. I used to climb alone completely without proper equipment until I got older.
Room with a view… one of my favorite movies. RIP.
Boxing Helena!
He was a favorite of mine. I hate that he (or anyone) suffered but somehow his disappearance was a seemingly appropriate way for him to go. RIP, and thanks for the memories.
Great movie
My friend was an extra in it.
He probably didn’t want it.
@@Mortthemoose - I have been through four different mountaineer courses, I assure you I know how to do an ice-ax arrest.
RIP Julian Sands
Sad end but a respite from crime. Thanks Dr. Grande.
