Maybe it wasnt in cash in her bedroom but in a bank account that her dad had cosigned with her. She thought she would be able to get it out but couldn't. Or maybe if it was in cash at her house her dad had it put up and when she wrote the note she thought she would be able to get to it but could not and she just had to leave.
Yes, it is very frustrating. Just because a kid is old enough to hold down a job or have a driver's license does not mean that they are ready to be on their own. Even after they turn 18, most of them are really not ready to face the world without at least some occasional help from family. Because police assume every older teen or young adult disappearance is voluntary, it means kids in that age range are especially vulnerable to Catfishing and trafficking. There are federal and state laws these days requiring them to start looking for even young adults that go missing, up to the age of 22. -- Suzanne's law. But I don't think that law existed yet when this young woman went missing. And even now, after Suzanne's law was passed, it is still often very difficult to get local law-enforcement to help look for a teenage or young adult missing person.
On the one hand, missing person calls are almost always unconnected to a crime so it is understandable that they don't immediately treat these cases as suspicious. On the other hand, I watch a lot of these crime vids and a lot of time the officer who takes the call tries to persuade the family that she ran away with no evidence to explain the mistake, and with the "runaway's" money, clothes, and once even car all left behind. They really get tunnel vision from most of those calls being false alarms, when I first noticed how many stories feature this stuff I was flabbergasted that it happened yet again. They definitely should create criteria where the officer MUST treat it as suspicious if there are indicators like those
I noticed that too. Why can't they take a few hours to look into a missing person instead of always concluding the person ran away? What are the statistics of missing persons reports that turn out to be hoax or someone voluntarily ran away?

Thank you for covering this case. This is one of the first cases that got me into real and true crime. Being hurt by family and controlled is so hard to deal with. It is very sad that when she finally got away from her stepfather, it was not in the way she or anyone would’ve hoped.

I think the members of the judicial and law enforcement systems are in desperate need of continuing education that includes courses in psychology. It would be a great side gig for Dr Grande to pursue.
I had the same question. Unless the biological father had been abusive and dangerous to his own child, and had been given no custody rights whatsoever by the courts as a result of him being a danger to her, ie not even supervised visitation, you would think he would have still been involved in her life somewhat. And if she went missing voluntarily because of the behavior of the stepfather, even if her bio dad did not have custody, why wouldn't she have reached out to her bio dad for help regardless? Maybe the reason she reached out to her aunt instead of her biological father is because the bio dad was also problematic in some way.
@@EmilyPucker -- I get that, but even in divorces where the new parent legally adopts the stepchildren, it doesn't necessarily mean that the other biologic parent is completely excluded from the children's lives. The fact that she kept in touch with one of her aunts and reached out to the aunt instead of the biological father makes me wonder if there was also a reason she didn't want to be around her biological dad either.

Hi, Alissa’s sister here. There are a few inaccuracies in this video. Happy to clear them up and provide more context if you’re interested. Otherwise, thanks for talking about Alissa.
If step-daddy was guilty, why didn't he destroy the cellphone and launder the saved money? It seems that he had all of the time in the world to do so, and if he was so controlling of her every move and had access to her room, he would have known about or found those items. He also had to know how suspicious it would look that she left the items.

I remember hearing about this case in a podcast ("Missing Alissa", iirc) a few years ago. Todd left out *lots* of details (ofc, this podcast was several hours long) - give it a listen! Heartbreaking how hardly nobody cared about her, and he was absolutely guilty only the police didn't investigate until it was too late. R.I.P. Alissa 💔
Her sister Sarah has done great work is raising awareness of missing people cases. She presented a podcast on spotify on missing people…I highly recommend.
Why would she leave her phone and life's savings behind if she wanted to start over? She wouldn't. And her claims about her stepfather's behaviour really makes me think he may have been sexually assaulting her. Whatever he was doing, he is the most likely suspect in my opinion
Dr G posts unlisted YT videos on Patreon that members can see, and eventually months later they’re made public and so suddenly appear in RUclips feeds.
Looking at the homicide timeline (Professor Jane Moncton Smith) for domestic abuse murders the death coincides with the major trigger that Alissa was separating from him. She had made tentative plans to move to California and had saved the money. If he was such a control freak then he would not have been able to accept losing control over Alissa.
The biggest clue the cops should have picked up on from the beginning that this was not a runaway was saying she took relatively small amounts of money from her sister and father yet left $1800 of her own money.
His Daughter stated he tried to marry his Wife’s Sister, his own SIL after his Wife passed away. He placed video cameras 📹 in Alyssas bedroom, recorded her at work, etc. Creepy!
One item that is inescapable is that he truly did receive a call from Calif. at the stated time. If he had staged it in an attempt to corroborate his story there would have had to have been a co-conspirator placing the call. But there is no evidence of that. In addition, he brought a lot of needless attention onto himself for a person attempting to cover up another crime that he'd committed. Runaway teens can get into a lot of trouble all by themselves and there appears to be as much evidence pointing to that as to the stepfather.
I used to eat at Jack in the Box all the time when I lived in Maricopa and still often when I lived in Tempe. It's unfortunate that the investigations are so muddled. Once a case is prolonged like that, it can be so much harder to get the truth.
It's extraordinary to me that the police just assumed she was a runaway. Yes, she left a note, but that was probably intercepted by her stepfather (maybe why he picked her up early from school) She certainly wouldn't have left her money, especially after mentioning her savings in the note, and that should aroused them to the possibility that it wasn't so straightforward.
I'm sure the "assassins" were not union members, especially not United Auto Workers. They can't do anything for more than 5 minutes without taking an hour-long donut break.
I think he's 1 million percent guilty. The fact he had her sign papers that he's never abused her, alone is a 🚩
Why would she steal $300, but not take her own $1800. That is the most suspicious thing, imo

Here my guess. Alissa did write the note and planned to runaway but Michael discovered the note before Alissa could leave. They argued and Michael lost control and killed Alissa. It doesn’t make sense she would leave without her cellphone or the money she had saved.
That isn't a bad theory, but how do you explain the mysterious phone call from a pay phone in California?
@@jamesbowman6925 - Maybe he had someone he knew make the call?
@@jamesbowman6925he got someone else to place it
Wouldn't an ex-cop realize that was an obvious sign and at least dispose of the cellphone?
@@jamesbowman6925 i commented this elsewhere but it’s speculated that he had a plan to pay someone to make the phone call and then sue the pay phone company to show the phone call came from California to exonerate himself.
he was a cop, remember that. a conniving one too, he basically got his cop buddies to help him illegally adopt alissa from her bio dad after her mom died.
Thank you for covering this case. This is one of the first cases that got me into real and true crime. Being hurt by family and controlled is so hard to deal with. It is very sad that when she finally got away from her stepfather, it was not in the way she or anyone would’ve hoped.
3,000 videos, Grande is a beast
Following this instructive channel from Goiatuba-GO, Brazil.
Never thought I’d see a Dr. Grande video where the doctor mentioned my hometown of Torrance.
So tragic. This poor girl should have been protected. I wonder where her biological father was.
Kendal Rae had her sister on her podcast - in-depth & super informative episode.
Rip Alissa 💔
That stuck out for me as well. Police not finding that alone suspect shows their blabtant incompetence.
Then they decide after years and no evidence to charge him... Ridiculous.
Sad!! Great job Dr.Grande!!
Wow, you're working hard today, Dr. Grande! I won't be able to watch this or any other videos this weekend (I'm only here after getting the notification). I'm looking forward to a very interesting Monday morning coffee, as I'll get caught up on them all then. In the meantime, thanks, as always!
We appreciate how well you articulate your insights, Dr Grande. Keep working hard.
Hello Dr.Grande.God bless you🙏🏻💞
I think the members of the judicial and law enforcement systems are in desperate need of continuing education that includes courses in psychology. It would be a great side gig for Dr Grande to pursue.
Yes, continuing education!
I agree with you completely, Dr. Grande. I was wondering how Alyssa was disruptive.
... puzzling how this all went down.
Very Sad non the less.
I am wondering why....after the mother died, why did Alissa not go live with her bio dad?
Just wrote the same
I had the same question.
She was adopted by Michael. He, not her bio dad, was her legal father.
Or even her aunt in California.
Whaz up doc, can you Rock?!!!
I Thank you for your ability to bring a lil humor and light into the darkness of some of our human behavior.
You are Appreciated!
I've heard about this case on another true crime channel. Michael thinking he was losing control of Alissa was behind her disappearance and death.
‘Shocking news that made sparks fly’ - i absolutely love the way this man weaves in the driest, deadpan jokes to his videos. Dr Grande, you’re a legend!
Dr. Grande! I haven’t commented in awhile but just wanted to let you know that I love your videos and really appreciate your research and sense of humor! Thank you!
She has $1,800 saved but doesn’t take it with her and takes $300 from her stepfather instead.
As judge Judy would say, if it doesn’t make sense, it’s probably not true.
Thanks for the update Dr. Grande. Poor Alyssa and Sarah.
Thank you king for going off
Omg I am so mad about this!
No evidence??? 😮
Come on!!!!
Poor Alyssa 😢
Very proud of her sister ❤
Great video Doc.
You are spoiling us!
In the note, she allegedly left and said she took $300 dollars. The handwriting could have been analyzed if police had acted earlier.
As always, thanks, Doc!
Love this guy and the way he analyses cases
I watched that trial, was so disappointing
Dr. Grande, please cover Jaleayah Davis. Killed on thr highway in the appalachaian mountains. It is a coverup.
It Was two uploads today! Conscientiousness off the charts!
Nice work, thank you.
I really like your channel, Dr. Grande! 👋😌🙌
Dr Grande! ❤
Good Afternoon, Dr Grande. 👌
What a strange case. His attempts to investigate/publicize the case would be an incredibly risky bluff. How ridiculous to charge him without evidence when that would obviously lead to the outcome it did.
Always, thank you 🙏🏼
He told Sarah that he would confess on his deathbed.
Could someone please convince him that he only has a few days to live!
Why are you so sinister??? You don’t know if he has done it or not. People are so stupid.
@@seveneyes8335he definitely did it
For some reason , we all think Dr G does all the work on his own.
Envy is a horrible personality trait
Hi, Alissa’s sister here. There are a few inaccuracies in this video. Happy to clear them up and provide more context if you’re interested. Otherwise, thanks for talking about Alissa.
If step-daddy was guilty, why didn't he destroy the cellphone and launder the saved money? It seems that he had all of the time in the world to do so, and if he was so controlling of her every move and had access to her room, he would have known about or found those items. He also had to know how suspicious it would look that she left the items.
Ex colleague at the Cop shop!
Parked outside as Steppy went for Daughter
Typical Snatch & Grab scenario......Copper would've been in Home before and would be High ranking for search not to be done....Cold case reopening at time of Retirement.
Mere suspicion is not enough to convict people of a crime.
Such a tragedy, poor girl!
I love your play on words.
This one was tough to figure . I agree with your assessment
Was a notary present for the “I never sexually assaulted u” contract?
He made multiple contracts with more than one kid and they were all creepy.
Been dying to know your take on this case
“It sounds like he was worried about someone going postal on his way to the mailbox” 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Watching this on my night shift
Thx for the content always top quality
Why would she leave her phone and life's savings behind if she wanted to start over? She wouldn't. And her claims about her stepfather's behaviour really makes me think he may have been sexually assaulting her. Whatever he was doing, he is the most likely suspect in my opinion
This is what happens when you leave a man alone with children. Dangerous stuff! RIP to that poor girl❤️
There are four comments on this video each one month apart and it says it was just posted one minute ago...wth?!
Dr G posts unlisted YT videos on Patreon that members can see, and eventually months later they’re made public and so suddenly appear in RUclips feeds.
@@Big_Tex Makes sense now. Thanks for the explanation!
I remember this story, very sad and yes all signs point to him.
Creepy!
Dr Grande is guilty of double jeopardy today 😄
Cannot tell what you are trying to say.
@@eadweard.2 videos.
I know of this case. How could he get away with this?
It's extraordinary to me that the police just assumed she was a runaway. Yes, she left a note, but that was probably intercepted by her stepfather (maybe why he picked her up early from school) She certainly wouldn't have left her money, especially after mentioning her savings in the note, and that should aroused them to the possibility that it wasn't so straightforward.
she left her $1800 behind??? nobody is going to run away and leave their money behind
What an absolutely creepy man.
I'm sure the "assassins" were not union members, especially not United Auto Workers. They can't do anything for more than 5 minutes without taking an hour-long donut break.
