I just found you Maria! ! I am a young female senior and bought a new Gretsch Catalina Club a few years ago was really learning and enjoying and then let it sit for awhile after my beloved mom passed away suddenly. I am now on the mend and ready to back to it. You are my new inspiration Maria and I can't wait to get on this journey with you. Thank you for taking the time to do what you do to help drummers learn. You are amazing! I love your method of teaching!
Thank you, this comment really means a lot. I'm glad I can help you on your journey. Don't hesitate to reach out through my website if you have any particular questions or techniques you need help with. mariawulf.com.
I wanted to comment on your traditional stick video but couldn't because comments were disabled. It was really amazing.. so is this. Really glad to find your channel.
great video, I've been playing for a long time but have never played this, it's been a challenge, simple groove, but to tie it all together as u did takes practice
I absolutely love your teaching methods for drumming. You do a great job directing your attention with your audience (camera) and delivering more than the standard of teaching. Great lesson!
As a drummer that's been playing rock, and funk for years, I was intimidated to dive in jazz, but this beat/exercise proved to be the perfect gateway into that world. Great teaching.
Coming from a Brazilian, that means a lot. As I tried to emphasize in the video, I understand this isn't exactly authentic but it's the style and feel that the pro jazz players capture.
Maria I love they way you have dissected the Latin Rhythms ….. thumbs up to clarifying each movement… I have subscribed to receive more of your insights
Thank You Lord for Jeff Hamilton, i was in a country band 51 years & our group was very fortunate to tour with some major stars and i was amazed at these country drummers from nashville & a few from bakersfield ca because they could play and i mean Great like Jeff Hamilton !!! Thanks again Maria Wulf for hope...
It just so happens that I am I am a drummer also. I’ve always had a love for the drums, and learning new stuff. Thank you for the video. And thank you for the lesson on Samba rhythms . keep up the good work.
I've played jazz and latin for most of my 50+ year career. Your explanation and examples of thte jazz samba are probably the most comprehensive I've ever seen. Thanks for your interpretation of Jeff's method.
So glad that i stumbled upon your channel a few months ago. I've been using a drill that you did a video on. Paradiddles with alternating bass and hi-hat and also with a samba foot pattern. You're videos are getting more polished and that Sonor kit is gorgeous. Please keep the content coming. Thank you for being an Educator!
Nice groove, congrats 😊 and some Brazilian Masters of Samba Jazz that’s really important to listen to are: Rubinho Barsotti, Edison Machado and Argus Montenegro. All the best and success 🎉
@@MariaWulfMusic No problem! I think that the drummer's community must share knowledge as well as help everybody to grow their musical understanding and education. Then, listen to Zimbo Trio first - Rubinho Barsotti ;) Best and success
Yes, it really is. You can take a bossa that is rooted in 4/4 time and take the exact same rhythms and play double (or half note feel) time and it becomes a samba.
@@MariaWulfMusic 🙂👍 .... latin rythmics are great ! we can already entertain the audience if we just "soloing" with some of them ! not need a complicated drumsolo always
Maria- I always read all comments - I am asking to see if any of your videos talk about good cymbals to buy without breaking the bank. I have decent ones now but am looking to upgrade when I feel I deserve to do so.
I actually just recently sent an email to a student with some recommendations. Contact me through my website and I'll email you some ideas. mariawulf.com.
Hi, for me the volume determines my foot position more than speed. For something like this I do a kind of in-between. I only keep my heel all the way down when I need to play really quiet or am on my jazz kit where the bass drum is wide open and very sensitive. There's a lot of nuance that's difficult to explain. I have it on my list to do a bass drum technique video demonstrating all this. Thanks for watching :-)
Hello, this is my first Sonor kit. I knew I wanted one because of always liking the way they sound. After doing much research I landed on a custom made SQ2 made with Beech wood. I also have a smaller jazz kit that's a Yamaha Maple Custom with an 18" kick. I play that one on my Carl Allen transcription video and the Gordon Goodwin Whodunnit.
I agree! Check out my video at 4:50 where I do a slo mo example of how the fingers are moving with traditional grip bouncing. ruclips.net/video/pupvjo-Qycs/видео.htmlsi=BrBV5ojEr3PPw_uy&t=291
Hello. The pattern is in 4/4 time. The HH is on 2 & 4. The bass drum is on beats 1 (x) & 3 (x) & 1, etc. When you add the hands it can sound very syncopated at times.
I assume you don’t want the accents to be played in the right hand playing the ride?. Thats really hard for me. I’m using an edrum kit and i keep triggering a crash if i play it too hard. I get the same with texas blues shuffle. This could take a while to master.
Hello, I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not but actually, yes, the idea would be that both hands are playing the accents. With that being said, it's a great challenge in dynamics independence to try to accent with one limb but not the other.
Hey, I think you're a great teacher, but I think it should have been in sixteenth notes because it is really on the down and off beat and then in-between the beats
Hi Steve, if the bass drum down beats were on all quarters then yes, it would be notated as 'upbeat' 16ths but in this case the bass drum downbeats are on counts 1&3 so the 'upbeats' are notated as 8th notes. This also lines up with the rhythmic notations of the rest of the rhythm section too.

I was trying learn how to play samba in a small jazz combo (without any other percussionists), and this tutorial is the best resource I could find.
Great teacher and musician.
You a very good teacher
very good tutorial!
Excellent job. I’m a hard rock drummer 45 years. Love the Jazz Samba, gonna work on it. You really taught that well! 👏👏👏
You are the best instructor on yt. Wow

She did a great job in making that groove fairly easy to learn. Much respect.

I think what makes her so great at teaching is she doesn't flood you with to much information all at once. She's a really great teacher
Hi, and thank you for the feedback. I've been teaching all levels for quite a while and have been working on dialing it in.
I love how clear, steady and organized you are with your instructions. Extremely helpful thank you!!!

Great drumming, sister! Bravo!

Great videos! Thanks @maria. Simple but so effective. Learning so much 👍 you earned a subscriber.
Good lesson! I like the articulations on the snare.
Thanks for all of your advice and contributions. I appreciate you doing this video on the jazz samba.

That's a beautiful finish on that kit.
Isn't it. I'm glad I splurged. It actually makes me want to practice.
I love it.
Hi Maria, I would love to learn more jazz. Intro to jazz music 😅 🥁
Hi, that is my plan. At some point I'll be making a series of Jazz Drumming 101 videos.
♥️🥁♥️🥁♥️🥁♥️🥁♥️Thank you! ❤️🥁❤️🥁❤️🥁❤️🥁❤️
Super! Sehr gut!
You studied with Hammer?? Would love to chat about that with you. Great feel Maria
Yes! Summer camps, small groups and a handful of 1:1 lessons. It was the basis for the foundation of my playing and I'm forever grateful.
Very nice 🥂

Hi Maria, very cool, I'm almost there :) How do you play the right foot at that speed? Heel up or down?
Hi, for me the volume determines my foot position more than speed. For something like this I do a kind of in-between. Nice Sonors
Maria what I notice you entertain with a Sonor Kit what kit do you prefer?

Why do drum instructors not show some slow motion shots

Did i miss the notation for the bass part. Is it 3/4 time? bass hat bass, 123? or is there triplet rest?
Hello. The pattern is in 4/4 time. The HH is on 2 & 4. The bass drum is on beats 1 (x) & 3 (x) & 1, etc. When you add the hands it can sound very syncopated at times.
@@MariaWulfMusic Thanks for your answer really appreciate that. So the feel of the triplet on bass is just due to the fast tempo yeah? I subscribed.

Dylan Elise
Not quite Anika Niles level skill but basic level
Idk...I love seeing/hearing female musicians.
Technically it's fine but it doesn't sound what it should sound like the rhythm isn't there.
Sorry, but this is not samba, there is no swing or rhythmic division with tambourine notes
Ouch...
