To truly understand why the prequels were doomed from the start read How Star Wars Conquered The Galaxy. Its a great comprehensive book on Lucas, his influences and the development of every era of SW. The original trilogy, especially episode 4, was as good as it was because Lucas hung around his group of auteur directing/writing friends like Spielberg, Coppola (who he worked for) DePalma, Kasdan etc. During his writing process he was constantly getting feedback about his ideas. He had people tell him no, which is vital when creating. An artist needs at least 1 person that can tell them the truth no matter what. By the time Lucas was developing the prequels he could do no wrong. He only had yes men around him that stroked his ego & signed off on everything he did. No one could tell him “hey maybe you should not do that”. Also Star Wars (ep 4) was saved in post by Lucas’ ex wife & her editing skills. After filming everything Lucas thought he had a disaster on his hands until his wife saved him.
@@MrZackavelli Have you read the book? Lucas wasn’t completely hostile to criticism but between his need for full control and those around him finding it incredibly difficult to pass judgment on his work due to idolizing him for the previous 2 decades, production on the prequels was never going to be as successfully collaborative as the original trilogy. Art flourishes under restriction, critical feedback, and simply having another set of eyes on the project. Every artist needs to be challenged, if they aren’t and have free reign financially great successful artists on Lucas’ scale tend to flounder.
I just want to recommend the book Master and Apprentice, it's the Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan story this movie was missing and helps elevate their characters in this movie because you know more about them and where they are at in relation to the jedi.
nope attack of the clones literally has the worst love scenes in movie history. the dialogue is atrocious . and padme cant fall in love with him until he slaughters a tuskan raider village and then she gets hot for him
Ray Park was NOT the voice of Maul guys. It was British actor Peter Serafinowicz who recently played The Tick on the Amazon Prime tv show that just got canceled. He’s a legendary comic actor but was brought in to voice Maul because Ray Park was/is not the strongest actor. Google is your friend. lol 😜
I forgot he was in the Tick. Given how much Nick liked that it's a little surprising he didn't know that. Seems like the random type of thing he would know.
Read the book Darth Plagueis. It brings so much depth to the plot of Episode 1. It basically functions as an Episode 1 prequel/origin story for Palpatine.
So I always thought the Queen makeup was ceremonial (albeit weird), but then got thinking... if Queen Amidala was duly elected, yet nobody recognizes Padme as being the real queen... did she "run for Queen" wearing the makeup? Did she always wear the makeup from birth?

As a five year old kid who was a huge fan of Star Wars, I fell asleep watching this in theaters. To this day, it is the ONLY movie that I have fallen asleep to in the theater. I remember waking up in the car on the way home and my brother being pissed cause he really liked Qui Gon.
the first fight between Maul and Qui Gon I always thought wasn't played out for Maul to kill Qui Gon, more so to serve as an announcement that the sith are back and scare them. The more I think about it the more I believe it because we see that he could have easily killed him then from the ending of the film but instead used one blade as a means to test him. Like had he killed him there would have been a hunt then for him and more jedi would have gone to Naboo but instead he waits until the droids in the city are dead to just walk in and surprise them when opening the door.
As to your discussion around 1:19:00 concerning the 'balance' of the force, what is interesting in this regards is that it seemed; at least initially, that The Last Jedi was going to explore this. The original trailer for The Last Jedi (which dropped in I think early-mid 2017, if I'm wrong then somebody please correct me) predominantly focussed on Luke and his apparent growing disillusionment with the entire idea of the force, implying that the original idea of 'balance' to the force as the Jedi understood it was wrong (actually putting it severely *out* of balance by destroying the Dark Side entirely) and that Luke was determined to put an end to the force as a whole; hence the prominent line of "the Jedi must end". I believe you guys actually discussed this ages ago in your reaction video to this trailer, although I can't remember the exact video. The film that we actually got in the end seemed to abandon this idea entirely, which I thought was a massive dissapointment, and clearly evidence that large parts of the film had been shot or reworked, hence the massive shift in Luke's character in the first and second parts of the film, when he returns to fight Kylo like nothing has changed and resume the same old dark/light paradign. Anyway, great video as usual guys, really enjoying the show!
Hey Big Kev. If you want more info on the Rule of Two and who started it, read the Darth Bane novels. They are good and do a good job making the creation of the rule make sense.
The way I interpreted the midichlorian explanation was that its more of a marker for how force-sensitive someone is and not the cause of the force powers themselves
Man, I tried my hardest NOT to watch the new SWTROS trailer 'cause I don't want to get spoiled by anything, but the crew's watch-through convinced me I was doing a disservice to myself, especially Tim's claim that it made him cry 3 times. I've gotta say, the previous trailer did it for me, filling my heart with splendor & rekindling my love for this iconic series, but sadly the new trailer just doesn't strike the same chord. The music is epic & the scale is palpable, though the first trailer is hands-down the best Star Wars trailer ever released & was the first one to ever make me legitimately bawl my eyes out. I truly wish I stuck to my guns & didn't watch this 'cause now I'm not nearly as stoked for the film's release as I once was.
Qui Gon and Anakin werent being chased by Maul prior to the fight outside of the ship. They were being followed by a probe droid, which Qui Gon realizes and slices it in half. Realizing their whereabouts had been discovered, Qui Gon and Anakin rush to get back to the ship so they could eacape.
Unsure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the Podracing section was inspired by Formula 1. George Lucas is a huge F1 fan, and everything from the pre-race ceremony, to the sound design and the race drama is all very F1. Just a fun fact!
He may have wanted to put things into this that would appeal to a younger audience than the originals, but he just didn't have to do that. 6 year olds loved the original Star Wars as much as their older siblings. The kids in 1999 would have been won over without the Sesame Street level humour. Although one might argue that George's infatuation with baby humour started with Return of the Jedi.
I wish you guys cut the watching of EP.9 trailer bit out, potential future spoilers but more so I for one am not watching it so I can go in as blind as possible into the cinema to experience it for its entirety. With that out of the way... it’s time to listen to the EP.1 in review! 🔥
I really don't understand why people hate the Midichlorian line so much. We already knew that not everyone can use the force. All it does is add a small detail as to why. To me it really doesn't take much away from anything
Even growing up with these movies as a kid I loved all of the political stuff and the more convoluted plot. I always thought it was extremely compelling, I guess I was always destined to study Political Science and International Relations in college 😂😂
The Maul fight is my favourite in any of the movies but god do I hate the end of it. Maul should've easily been able to do what Obi-Wan did to Anakin in RotS, I think this is basically a meme at this point but he had the high ground...
The prequels are my childhood. But this movie isn’t as bad as everyone say it is. Ranking 1. Empire Strikes Back 2. A New Hope 3. Return of the Jedi 4. Phantom Menace
Interesting point regarding the Gungan victory/celebration music at the end of the film... It's the Emperor's Theme in a Major key, at a higher tempo...
So....I know this is more of satirish review...but I would say a good 80% of your 'negatives' and complaints are actually explained. It's funny and enjoyable to riff,..but just so you know, the answers and logic behind a lot of this is out there is you follow up with it
The only reason to start with Episode 1 is by the time you get to Episode 4 you get into the true awesome Star Wars. Of course first time watch in order of release.
No, that theory was debunked by Matt Martin of the Lucasfilm story group. He mentioned that the Dark Side is a not-reliable narrator and that Anakin was seeing his worst fear influenced by the Dark Side.
While I still think Midichlorians are an explanation for the force we do not need overall, it wasn't as big a travesty as some have made it out to be. Midichlorians are microscopic lifeforms that live in all living cells, so literally everyone has them, but some have a higher concentration which explains why not just anybody can use the force. A person with a low midichlorian count could trust in the force with all of their being and still not be able to lift rocks off the ground. Midichlorians aren't what the force is made out of, they are just a way that some people are able to commune with it. Again, we would have been fully satisfied just thinking the force is mysterious, so I don't think we needed the explanation in the first place but as far an explanations go its not as terrible as you might have thought.
Peter Serafinowicz is the voice of Darth Maul.He is indeed English. You might know him as the recent Tick and "bunch of A-holes" guy in the first Guardians".
Qui-Gon - "He is to be trained then?" Mace Windu - "No, he will not be trained. He is too old" Qui-Gon-"No, fuck you. I will train him." Yoda-"Anakins fate will be decided later." Ughhhh, what?? Didnt you JUST decide his fate by saying "No, he will not be trained? What happened in that 10 seconds of dialogue that changed the council's mind?
Balance of the force means exactly what it sounds like. You had a million Jedi & only 2 Sith, the Force (always seeking balance) is going to balance it out by bringing about the destruction of the Jedi order. Of course Palpatine & the Sith taking over the galaxy puts the balance out of whack completely so the force responds by making Luke & Leia. It goes back & forth throughout the ages this way.
Tim raises an interesting Point, why did Yoda Flip on Agreeing to Obi wan training the boy. Qui Gon -> Dooku -> Yoda Ultimately Yoda's teaching's led to Qui Gon's actions via his Master Dooku.
I understand all of the arguments for why this is a bad movie, but I think it's such a meme to nitpick on each little thing as if it's the worst idea ever. Like, why is Anakin being born of the force less interesting than his mom being a slave who doesn't know who the father is? Why are midi-chlorians worst than "nah, man, just believe and you can do it"? The force was never really explained as a faith thing as much as a nature thing that a faith was built around. You had to open yourself up to feel the universe, basically. Midi-chlorians don't change that, but it explains why not everybody in the universe can use the force. It also opens up the opportunity for others to use the force without believing specifically in the Jedi or Sith religion.
I’m actually reading the novelization of this movie and I appreciate it a lot more, although I still think it’s the weakest out of the prequels. There’s a lot of little details that make the story more believable. For example, a probe droid spots Qui-Gon and Anakin as Anakin is saying his goodbyes. Qui-Gon destroys the droid and is like, “We need to get the FUCK out of here “
I absolutely LOVE the fact that all these guys complain about how stupid stuff is with THESE movies, and it's the SAME problem a LOT of people have with the new movies. Good ideas, but stuff doesn't work. This franchise is a joke now.
People in the twitch chat were freaking out that it was totally obvious that the dice was made to be rigged on red. How was that obvious? If you caught it, HOW was that supposed to be clear for the common audience? Wtf? I Was flabbergasted by that fact and then I looked at the chat and people were going off about how obvious it was.
I watched the Phantom Menace a couple of days ago, and that shit is trash and has been trash since. It’s frustrating because there are so many elements here that could work, but they don’t focus on one certain thing.

This movie is still better than Last Jedi
Unsure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the Podracing section was inspired by Formula 1. George Lucas is a huge F1 fan, and everything from the pre-race ceremony, to the sound design and the race drama is all very F1. Just a fun fact!
Theses are the best. Love when a new one comes out!!!!
He may have wanted to put things into this that would appeal to a younger audience than the originals, but he just didn't have to do that. 6 year olds loved the original Star Wars as much as their older siblings. The kids in 1999 would have been won over without the Sesame Street level humour. Although one might argue that George's infatuation with baby humour started with Return of the Jedi.
imo this movie ages so much better than attack of the clones
I think the reason the Yoda and Mace Windu accompany the chancellor to Naboo at the end is essentially to continue investigating the Sith.
Honestly I think TFA might have the best music for me. Rey's theme is beautiful and Kylo's theme is so epic.
HOW THE HELL ARE THEY STILL MAKING GOOD TRAILERS WITHOUT SPOILING LIKE WAY TOO MUCH?
Looks like they learned from the Marvel trailers
The theorising for what the prequels could have been is awesome. Maybe another video in that!
1:52:10 I believe Obiwan learned the high ground technique from how he defeated Darth Maul. So he knew what to do in. Ep.3.
It’s so funny now that I’m getting older I really appreciate these movies lmao❤️
Andy's sound effects are on FUCKING point
Patton Oswalts bit about the prequels is glorious
Even growing up with these movies as a kid I loved all of the political stuff and the more convoluted plot. I always thought it was extremely compelling, I guess I was always destined to study Political Science and International Relations in college 😂😂
1:38:20 Almost made me fucking cry, that was so FUCKING good Nick, Jesus!!
Oh also Maul's voice is not Ray Park it's the "what a bunch of A holes" guy from Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Maul fight is my favourite in any of the movies but god do I hate the end of it. Maul should've easily been able to do what Obi-Wan did to Anakin in RotS, I think this is basically a meme at this point but he had the high ground...
No watto, no watch :(
31:56 holy shit Andy (also when Plot gets kicked off for anyone who wants a timestamp)
The prequels are my childhood. But this movie isn’t as bad as everyone say it is.
Ranking
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Return of the Jedi
4. Phantom Menace
There is Clones and then this.
Interesting point regarding the Gungan victory/celebration music at the end of the film... It's the Emperor's Theme in a Major key, at a higher tempo...
There should be another podcast within a podcast that ranks all the ships/fighters in the series.
in regards to the 'high ground' situation, i think they said something about how Obi wan learnt from this situation
Who’s watching in 2023! 🎉
One thing about Anakin's dad, its canon that his dad is Palpatine who used the force to impregnate her
No, that theory was debunked by Matt Martin of the Lucasfilm story group.
Qui-Gon - "He is to be trained then?"
Mace Windu - "No, he will not be trained. He is too old"
Qui-Gon-"No, fuck you. I will train him."
Yoda-"Anakins fate will be decided later."
Ughhhh, what?? Didnt you JUST decide his fate by saying "No, he will not be trained? What happened in that 10 seconds of dialogue that changed the council's mind?
I love this video and Nick's Jar Jar impressions!
Is that explained in the movie?
Tim raises an interesting Point, why did Yoda Flip on Agreeing to Obi wan training the boy.
Qui Gon -> Dooku -> Yoda
Ultimately Yoda's teaching's led to Qui Gon's actions via his Master Dooku.
Darth Maul was voiced by Peter Serafenawicz who was they "they look like a bunch of aholes" guy from guardians of the galaxy
KC Hammer Yeah, and he is hilarious. Played the Tick perfectly.
Fear leads to drugs, drugs lead to VH1 behind the music. 😂😂😂
The first time I saw people clapping in a theatre was at the end of Step Up 2.
The best thing to come out of the prequels is that Samurai Jack Anime style cartoon short that introduced Asaj Ventress.
Love that cartoon, but it is not the only good thing. Episode 3 is the best Star Wars movie.
26:05 I kept hearing "hanging brain" rather than "hanging braid" and was so confused for a minute...
Qui-Gon destroys the droid and is like, “We need to get the FUCK out of here “
I collected the Pepsi and Dew cans too, Andy ... Until most of them exploded bc teenager me didn't understand CO2 pressure. 😆
I absolutely LOVE the fact that all these guys complain about how stupid stuff is with THESE movies, and it's the SAME problem a LOT of people have with the new movies. Good ideas, but stuff doesn't work. This franchise is a joke now.
1:14:38 that is actually NOT Greedo but Wald. There is a deleted scene with a mean kid Greedo, but its not this kid.
John Williams also reused some Star Wars music in Harry Potter.
Kevin obviously doesn't know how temperature in space works
I watched the Phantom Menace a couple of days ago, and that shit is trash and has been trash since. It’s frustrating because there are so many elements here that could work, but they don’t focus on one certain thing.

“Impressions go far here”
The room with a hole is the plasma flow chamber that controls the power toTheed city. The laser walls are to activate if the is a power surge
One time for Andy and the shoutout to Lester B Pearson!! Six guy in the house!
