Are you struggling with F2L but acing the beginner’s method? Let me introduce: Zeta-slotting. I came up with this new way of doing F2L, it combines the idea of F2L and the simplicity of the beginner’s method. This way of doing F2L is so simple, anyone can learn Zeta-slotting in 5 minutes, and with a bit of practice, become a SUB-20 SOLVER!! In this video, I will compare Zeta-slotting to other methods, explain why it’s so good and analyze the specs.

I believe this is a great step in between since once he gets good at this method he will already know 3 cases of F2L so less for him to learn down the road when he is ready and this should speed up his current beginner method. Funnily enough, keyholing is a building block to pseudoslotting, both of which are used extensively even at sub 10 speeds! Especially for pairs 1-3, since you have an empty slot it may be more ergonomic and efficient to use a keyhole (only to solve corners though).

the advantage over LBL is its less moves and the advantage over F2L is its more methodical, you dont have to find two pairs first then match and insert

When I am comfortable with that, I will move on to more f2l cases, and expand my algorithm library. The method I'm using now, is not faster than the beginner method, but it's my way of actually getting enough practice with the case.

Then the bottom had several contingency options for getting the corners and edges. The fastest I could EVER do it was about 3 minutes but consistently around 5 minutes ❤I was very happy.

I personally think that you would be better off transitioning straight to regular intuitive cfop f2l from lbl. You will be better in the long run as you won’t need to learn f2l when you reach the limits of this method. I did a ao 50 and found that my times were way less consistent and about 10-12 seconds slower than cfop. My best single was about 22 seconds and I average about 17 using cfop. I found myself using regular f2l for the last edge to cut down on moves and I found it was much easier to lose pieces when solving. The only advantage I had over cfop was that I had eo done about 50% of solves for OLL. This is definitely a viable method if you don’t want to keep improving in the long run but I do think you are better off learning cfop when you reach a 40-50 second average using lbl

I don't know If you know this technique, but it's called keyhole.
The basic idea is that you turn the d layer for the slots of the corners. The method shown in the video isn't as efficient, as it requires more moves.
Here's an example solve for what I mean:
    L F D' L F2 D2 L U L2 U2 F2 R2 F R2 L2 F R2 F R2 F'
    x2 y

    y U' R' U R // orange-blue edge
    D' U R U' R' // orange-blue corner

I appreciate your dedication to not only make a method but to also put a tutorial online. You explain your method very well and it's certainly a good video, however, as harsh as it sounds, I don't think zeta slotting is particularly useful. It certainly is easier to learn than full f2l and you're correct about lookahead being easier. However, lookahead being easier doesnt make up for the larger move count and worse ergonomics. The recognition of moving the edges to the correct face and eventually taking all the corners put of the bottom layer later is tedious and awkward. There are ways to make this faster, but they're more advanced and require better lookahead, which you would develop learning regular f2l. Furthermore once cubers get to the stage where learning f2l is important, they're probably going to be cubing for an extended period of time where learning full f2l will be way more important in the long run and it will slowly develop over time. After testing myself (I average around 12-14 seconds if thats important), it doesnt seem much better than simply keyholing all the corners and edges which would lower the movecount quite a bit. And of course, this is simply my opinion, im not a world-class cuber and i could be missing something that you have seen so i'd probably take my words with a grain of salt. And just to reiterate, this is a very well made video and i hope you try to do more like this in the future, this one was unfortunately not a hit. If you genuinely disagree with me and have reasons to believe so, I'm more than happy to discuss it and see your perspective

7:12 you can just do U’ R U2 R’ U R U R’ to solve it. It’s rotationless, super fast and you can always have the corner on the right side no matter which way the white sticker is facing so you don’t have to forget if you need to rotate the cube for a certain case.

  • @SamSpeedCubes

Idk, it seems decent, but honestly unless you need to reach a sub 20-25 ish barrier before an upcoming comp it’s better to just keep focusing on f2l because while it might be 92 cases, you barely need to know any of them, if you just keep doing solves and slow solves knowing all 92 cases will come automatically
    Sub-12 solver btw

What you are selling off as "ZETA-SLOTTING" is actually a direct copy of the GOOSE-variant on the RING-METHOD (proposed by, yours truly, Nicolas Goossens in 2007).

Or you could, like, just learn intuitive CFOP. Yes, maybe technically there's 95 cases, but each case breaks down into smaller sub-triggers that are all intuitive and shift the relative positions/orientations of pieces in useful ways. So you're not really "learning 95 cases" so much as learning how to intuitively make the pieces do what you want. There's only like 4 of these sub-triggers, and they are only *3* moves each, so intuitive FTL wins hands-down there. Your three zeta-slotting cases can be attacked with the same set of sub-triggers, yielding solutions that are identical to yours. So really, you're doing F2L by doing extra work to set up this "belt plus corners on top" situation, and then applying algs to handle the three possible configurations. This is conceptually identical to beginner's method, which has you do extra work to solve the corners, then use algs to handle the different edge orientations. The whole point of learning intuitive F2L is that you don't have to do *any* extra work before forming the pairs. You just form and insert them directly and intuitively. This gets you the lower move-count of "real" CFOP F2L, and also high TPS because you do these sub-triggers *so many times* that you also get really fast at them. I'm all for playing around with different methods, but I don't see any actual benefit to zeta-slotting. It's just a subset of intuitive F2L with some extra steps to force all your pairs to be in the subset of cases that you've chosen to call "zeta-slotting".

There is a problem in the method where the corner separation actually does not separate corners into two layers
If you have 4 white corners and you insert the last middle layer edge using a 3 move trigger, a white corner is bound to end up in the bottom layer, it just so happens that in your example the white corner ends up being solved
If the white corner is not the corresponding corner for the edge then it's still fine since it will be kicked out later when that edge is paired , but if it is the right corner and not twisted properly you would end up with a twisted corner in slot, which is not addressed in this method
So you would have to either add 2 more algs or change the way you do last edge (but you'd have to be careful with how you introduce pairing - if it's too similar to beginner F2L they might as well just learn that)
From a more fundamental standpoint, F2L in CFOP is an essential step to understanding how pieces move on the cube, especially with the concept of pairing edges and corners together, which this method does not provide, so this would not be great for cubers who really want to get fast
For people who just want to get a little bit better they can learn keyhole, which is quite efficient, uses the same edge insertion technique as zeta-slotting, and more intuitive
So, not really convinced that this is as game-changing as you say it is

It works 99% of times. There is a variable that you will have one bottom piece in the right slot, but with the wrong orientation after solving the rest of the 3 corners. @6:23 if the bottom corner piece (red, blue and white) which is a match for the (blue, red) last piece that you're trying to put in the correct slot so all 2nd layer is solved, is in the wrong orientation, you will have that corner unsolved because that piece ( red, blue and white) will not come up again for you to solve it correctly. On your video ( by luck )you have it in the right orientation, but it by any chance that piece was not lined up correctly as in your video you wouldn't be able to solve it. Keep doing it, and it will happen. Sorry to say but this method DOESN'T WORK ALL THE TIME.

full f2l only has 42 cases for last slot?? also it has around 42 percent lower movecount and i dont think it's any slower than edge first. like full f2l, zeta slotting also has bad edges so those cases will not be very fast since you either need to rotate or use FU moves to insert the edge. and once you have inserted the edge, there are 5 unsolved cases, not 3. i dont think this will be the best way to do f2l, since full f2l has lots of advantages, but its not the easiest either because beginners know only a few algorithms, one of them is the sexy move, and beginners method f2l is literally just sexy moves u moves and rotations so it is easier for a beginner

First of all, this is a method for beginners and F2L is in every way better. As I said, this method sits in between The Beginners Method and F2L.
Secondly, full f2l, as in no matter where the 2 pieces are, have 94 cases. And as you said, there are bad edges, but if there is a bad edge, you would take it out and put it in again so it’s a good edge, so there are only 3 cases.
