Jang, Jang, Jang! You missed the best function on the set! The two engines separate off of the back and can connect to the shuttle pod and sensor array portions respectively, giving them booster rockets. Then the Cargo Box can be placed between the cockpit and engines to make a ship similar in size and function to the Blacktron Invader. Finally, those pictures on the back of the instructions aren't alt builds, per se, they are similar recombinations of the sets using these modules and the technic pins.
Thanks for pointing that out. The compatibility between all the different Blacktron sets is one of the best things about this LEGO theme.

The two nozzles can be disconnected too and, one of them, be connected to the cockpit module or the rover container, etc.

This takes me back. I had one of the blue space sets from around this time when I was a kid. Those nose pieces are very familiar and those printed slope pieces. The texture of the slopes were a dullish texture and the ones with buttons and controls were favorite pieces as were anything that hinged that could make something move. That buggy is pretty cool. I also had a castle set and a smaller castle set from around this time.

This is still one of my favorite LEGO kits. I love the asymmetrical design and how all the Blacktron kits could interlink. For '87, this was killer!

Most everything Lego does is symmetrical but this isn't. It stands out. I like it. I have it saved on my Bricklink wishlist so someday I'll get it.
If LEGO rereleased this set, they'd add like fifty spring-fire missiles and stud-shooters lol

I used to have a lot of these sets, and I still have some of my original pieces! I always remember having to rebuild things though because they would fall apart (easy for destructibility though). So great seeing this put together again!
Wow....what a flashback. This set was my absolute favorite back in the day. Spent hours playing with that bad boy. Love the channel!

...Actually, I'd love to see LEGO redo this set. We haven't had a decent space theme outside the City theme for a long time. It would be nice to return to the original.
Having had this set as a kid, the engines are also connected with pins. I used to take them off and attach one to the cockpit section for a small interceptor.
I had that set in 1987, when I was 10. That buggy was my favourite buggy design from the time, and I probably remade that one dozens of times. I actually have some of the parts from this set still in a box of lego my kids play with now. Great set.
I remember this set having an an awesome space station alt build shown on the inside of the box lid that I spent an entire Christmas break once trying to duplicate. I wish Lego would go back to those alt build suggestions to extend play value and encourage kids to be creative when rebuilding with their bricks.

This was the first Lego I bought with my own money as a kid. It was pretty expensive back in '87. I loved Blacktron. It was so cool compared to regular old Space. Thanks for reviewing this. Brought back a lot of memories for me.
I do miss all that good old stuff like Space, Castle and Pirates and I hope Lego will one day go back to their roots. I had the big wheeled Vehicle from Blacktron and it looked so cool. I also like the M-torn and Ice Planet series.
The Millenium Falcon taught me that asymmetry was cool!
I love the old space sets since I grew up playing with them. I have the LL928 and the opening cargo hold with the buggy was the best play feature ever IMHO. It's still with me to this day.
hey Jang. Thank you so much for reviewing the gem. I totally think it could be done today. It just warmed my heart to see this even though I never had the Black Tron sets as I went into my dark ages in 1984 ish. This is my favourite set from this theme. Thumbs up man.

Each of those rocket sections on the back also disconnected via technic pins/beams to attach to the cockpit or other modules. Favourite set from my childhood after LL928. So cool to see you review it!

Oh snap... I actually had this one. Or at least maybe the next version of it. I remember building this in the late 80's or early 90's. I absolutely loved these old space sets.

This is one of the bigger sets I had when I was young. I really liked this one.
i remember a friend having this when i was a kid. great set. im surprised its that old - i was born that year.
I have this set! And the crawler vehicle, the Battrax I think they called it? I always loved how they were designed to be modular so you could mix and match modules from the different sets without disassembling them.
Incidentally, you missed something... The big engines on the main module are removable with the same Technic pin-hole system as the other modules. That lets you add them to the cockpit, sensor, or freight module to make a more complete smaller ship.

I was lucky to get this set. My uncle gave me his old collection of classic space Lego sets and this was one off them! It is a really nice set
I believe blacktron is ready to make its triumphant return!
To me they only made sense in relation to Futuron. ...and I doubt they would reboot a full space universe. :(

Hi Jang, just wanted to take a moment to say that I think it's cool that you keep an eye out for these "blast from the past" sets-- certainly an adventure to see a set that was released before I was born! (Mostly unrelated: I read the snippet on the origin of your nickname the other day...interesting story)
you forgot the tail engines with the seats, they come off as well and allow reconfiguring to add engines to the different various combos this set can do!

Would really like to see Lego producing a Remake of the Blacktron Series, i loved it when I was a Child!
I do have a minor post-hoc reasoning for the 'holes' on the sides of the old LEGO Space stuff. Their cabins are not pressurized, so the canopy and frame are just to deflect debris, and comfortably protect and house a figure, while using only as much material as needed.
The same reason why I have trust issues with the Battrax :D

This is my favourite set ever. I'm curious as to why you didn't show the the rear parts could also detach a be recombined with the cockpit and other front module to make entirely new ships. I think this is the coolest part of this set, especially since the modules are interchangeable with 3 other Blacktron 1 sets.

I still have this set and in amazingly good shape [along w/ my 1970s classic space stuff]. One of my favorite more "modern" classic space sets and I too love how asymmetrical it is. I just recently re-built this back up and the two wing-man "pods" don't take as much effort to remove as they did for you; wonder if the condition of the bricks in yours is different?
I love the black and yellow color scheme and was always hoping they would do a black and green one [which they didn't, but I'm doing some MOC'ing with that scheme].
It would be awesome if they brought back themes like Blacktron with modern twists!
The front part attached to the cargo part looks like a prototype for the Phantom from Star Wars Rebels =)

A Blacktron revival would be great! It may have been before my time, but I'd certainly like to see such a popular theme return as the new space-themed line!
I guess it would conflict with SW, so they won't do it as a full series. :( ...and with SW plans ahead for the next several years, well...
Throughout this review, I kept mistaking the megaphones in the middle for those inbuilt-stud-shooter pieces.
I just found out about blacktron, futron, m-tron, etc. and I kind of wish that they were brought back. I would love a blacktron III with modern day sets
id love a cool new space ship with a cargo box like that. idk why but I'm na sucker for cargo bays and containers.

I know Futuron was around when this came out, but I think the original Blacktron guys to me are very fitting bad guys for the original multicolored Classic Space astronauts to be set against.

Loved Blacktron, probably my favorite space theme, especially the original Blacktron: I think the pure yellow + black is a winning combination. My favorite Blacktron set though was 6941. 'Thanks! Yes it is pretty common, especially in MOCs that try to optimize performance. The steering mechanism is pretty unique though.

Most of this set looks really awkward to me. I like the modularity of it, and man that cargo crate is a really cool idea(I wish there were more cargo freighter ships in Lego). As always, great review, I look forward to more!

Blacktron figs look best with the yellow visors, IMO.
It would be great to reboot Blacktron, Mtron, Futuron and Unitron in modern sets. The Unitron Monorail (6991) is a set I love in particular and would love to see modernized.

I think the "sets used to be better" is a valid point while criticizing late 90's / early 2000's sets. You know, when the "Jack Stone" sets were supposed to replace the Town/City line. Sets nowadays, even the more play oriented sets such as the Ninjago or Elves, are designed with many small pieces and details. I dare say this is the best era for Lego fans ^^

That one is really cool, I bought the parts for it from Bricklink recently and it is really cool :)
But, the yellow 2x2 tiles with the grille pattern on the back are ridiculously expensive, they cost about 15$ EACH!
