I always appreciate you including the names of the set designers in so many of your videos. a lot of bricktubers just completely neglect the person who designed the set and that's always frustrated me. these products aren’t just manifested out of the ether by lego corporate; designing them is just as much an art form as anything else and they deserve the same credit artists in other fields get. lego designers should have their names on the box!
For some set designers, it almost feels like their way of creating MOCs with a few company regulations. I especially feel that from designers like Niek van Slagmaat or Nick Va's.
I actually agree, give us the names of the designers on the box. On the back of the box in a special area with a gold colored outline, something like:

@@legoman716 initials of some designers are on LEGO elements such as license plates of City cars, but also recorded on Brickset under each set entry.

The US flag is printed backwards on a lot of US military gear and vehicles because it gives the appearance that the flag is "flying backwards" in the wind as it travels. Maybe we can apply that same logic to the side decals.
It does kind of gel--after all, there's no "up" in space, who's to say which facing is correct?--but something about it just feels odd unless it's all consistent 🥴
That's true. Usually more intricate liveries face towards the viewer, though it's certainly on a case by case basis.
The blacktron emblem is a ‘normal’ Triforce. It just looks like it’s upside down if you view the ship head on. Fighter jets place their livery oriented so that someone looking at them from above will see the correct orientation with the top of the design towards the nose cone. The Cruiser uses this convention.

However, the Blacktron logo *is* an upside down triforce, as seen on their base set from the 80's. I'm guessing the original set designer didn't know about this livery convention. 😅

I’m now curious how Slugger feels about the Bionicle anniversary GWP. Knowing him, he’ll probably have some hot take about the matter and talk more about the underappreciated creativity of Galidor compared to the Mixels joints (the latter of which he’s already voiced his distaste for in the Snowspeeder video).

I love your reviews because they cover the MOC elements. The idea that you’ve got your own pieces and can make your own modifications. A lot of lego tubers are like “It’s this way forever!! I can’t do anything about it!!!” i like this!
Yeah, there was a star wars tank that had the top barrel on the bottom instead of the top,and most people complained and acted like they couldn’t just switch

I got mine on the secondary market at a reasonable price as the threshold was way too high. I like it next to the Galaxy Explorer.
It's funny how you, dear slug, make some modifications same as me. Like the reversed front wings. I don't understand why they put it this weird way. Same as the orientation of the logo on the mail box...
On the other hand, i disagree for the stickers on the panels. I left them pointing forward for best whooshing effect. The only problem was to put the two sticker at exactly the same height on the two panels, a nightmare.
I hope the Lego Group have learned and will not renew this kind of nostalgic GWP, but i think i'm too optimistic here...
Yeah I've waited until someone sold the Blacktron cruiser on ebay at an affordable price. They even gave me a thank you card in it.
You might think this is crazy, but i technically now have two Blacktron Cruisers.
I was able to build a second one with my lego collection alone! Well, actuality half came from my own collection and the rest i bought via bricklink. It has no stickers so, think of it as a Blacktron ship that has yet to be labeled.
It’s great they made this set available again recently - It is horrible that they have made the barriers even higher though!! The set is so fun
Not to brag but this, the Bionicle even the forest hideout GWP are still available in my local stores. I guess nobody buys enough lego to meet the threshold and they have even removed limitations. I got the Bionicle one because I bought the new Jurassic Park sets. I was absolutely thrilled since I wanted ti get the GWP but missed out because I forgot it had a limited window.
1:33 Interesting. I just went on the Lego website on my phone, tapped building instructions on one of the models they advertised on the home page to get to the instructions site, typed in Blacktron Cruiser into the search bar & the instructions popped right up. Overall though, I really enjoyed building my copy I got back in January & it goes really well next to my Galaxy Explorer on my space shelf.
Apparently it’s on the website but *not* on the app? Someone must have dropped the ball over at The LEGO Group on this one.

Good observations of the oversights and modifications! When I picked up mine originally, I noted the clips seemed too rigid a connection to make it modular. One set of clips instead of two could have worked better without tearing the model apart, but new elements be darned. Also, I had a little trouble on the compartment on the back, comprised of banner flags. The clips' orientation took some adjusting to properly connect the flag to both clips per side, and when opening and closing the hatches, it feels like it's going at an awkward angle.
I agree - I had some issues with the middle module as well. 👍
I think the big takeaway is that there *are* design issues here - this set is simply not all it was hyped up to be. 😕
I like that you often mention and give attention to the set designers in many of your videos. That extra depth (some would say power crystal mining levels of depth...) is one of my favorite parts of this channel.

Many/most Blacktron fans consider this a must-have. They have been waiting for a Blacktron set for over thirty years.
I'd argue there is a *ton* of bias in those opinions, potentially blinding them to the more objective engineering failings of the set.
Still, it's not a bad set by any means, but it has issues, as demonstrated in the video. 👍

I love the drawing on the box! I did that for a few Bionicle fans who were looking for the Tahu & Takua Gift with Purchase after I acquired 6 copies.
I enjoy sticking on lego stickers too but I STRONGLY prefer printed bricks! I also really liked the tiled trans-red tiles on the rear wings.
Trans-red tiles on trans-red wings is the optimal solution
One thing I do like better about printed parts is that they generally last - I have some parts with stickers from some of my sets that have been tossed around in my bin of Lego for years, as well as played with in the mud and water, and washed off, and the stickers are peeling/disintegrating on them now!
I can't help but sing "SLUG!" in my head after "It's the Summer of Slug" as a call and response in the intro ;O;
While digital instructions can be useful, it's still important to have the hard copy instructions just in case Lego stops supporting a particular set or the servers are down when you want to build.
That’s true. On top of that, LEGO needs to do a better job archiving scans of their instructions. Currently, everything earlier than 1990 is a coin toss.
@@RRSlugger I was honestly surprised to see older 2000s sets pop up in the Builder app, but I guess still ways to go for the older more vintage to show up too. Luckily there are third party sites to provide some of them.
I pulled the $190 trigger on this thing, but I haven’t built it yet.
I get that they had to replace now-retired pieces with modern ones, but why change the pin connections to clips? It’s not like Technic pins have been retired.

Crisis averted!! In all honesty though, this remake set is just being faithful to the original Invader set, which also had a strange livery orientation to it. So I think there's merits to either system. 🤷♂️
I just pulled my stickers off and put them on the right way. ridiculous how they wanted you to put them on! I can't believe I didn't notice it before!

Finally you've reviewed this set. I was thinking of getting it to go with my galaxy explorer but i never did. I saw other reviews on it and thought that the new clip connection was unique but i prefer the tecknic connection system instead. And im glad you shouted out the person who made it.

I never noticed it before, but these are expertly placed stickers! Would you consider ever making a mini-tutorial on how to apply them this well? (I'm one of these people that nearly died at the amount of stickers in The City of Lanterns set, so I would greatly appreciate any tips for the future)

Looking at videos of the set (yours included) I wasn't too thrilled with the wings at the back of the set. After having a physical copy in front of me I kind of like it though. You can see the black plate through the trans-red tiles and it gives the whole thing a kind of textured look to it that trans-red on its own doesn't. I'd also recommend swapping out one (or both) of the trans-red round plates on the lasers for a trans-red cone
This has been a lot more measured and level-headed take on the set than others. Guess not having the new toy haze helps! I'm still very much of two minds on these new-old lego sets, ultimately finding them a bit too cynical and lacking in terms of creativity since they are just older sets with thrice the parts count. Although I must admit I stocked up on a handful of castle figures off B&P since it is far more justifiable to get those than genuine originals off bricklink in still relatively healthy quantities. I'm sure we'll keep getting more of these, but I think I'll stick with piecing together the original models secondhand.
good PSA yet again, i had to fight the urge to jump the gun this summer to get this one. but ultimately i decided it wasnt really for me. it does still bum me out that i missed out on the forestemen hideout though. that would have been perfect with the things ive been getting over the last year. but seeing that this one actually made a comeback is giving me some hope to pick one of those up without paying "scalpers fee" on it.
EDIT: also want to add i like the small changes you did to it, definitely looks better like that.

I bought Eldorado fortress so I got this just recently, unplanned, yet very welcome 😅
The strange orientation for the triforce on the side is the way it is because that was the way they were on the original set. It's like the incorrect color of lights on the Galaxy Explorer.
Awesome review as always! It did spark some curiosity though regarding the instructions as someone who doesn't use the online varieties except for the few alternate builds out there. When I checked today (the day this was uploaded), July 25th 2023, it did appear they had finally uploaded the instructions to the website. I'm around an hour after this was uploaded, so maybe the secret slug has extraordinary influence powers over at the Lego web team XD. That or they just happened to be uploaded in between filming and upload. Either way it was indeed odd these GWP sets were delayed in their instruction uploads. It almost feels like they forgot. (Edit: forgot to note I'm based in US, so I found them via the US website).

You have convinced me to use digital instructions. I loved paper but after starting digital I can see why you like it. With my computer desk I can't d dictate the room for paper instructions and the parts. So since my monitor is on the same desk PDFs are easy especially with a vertical monitor.
Shout out to the old instructions that made trans-res look like trans-magenta or something.
Totally! It's an ease of use thing for me. Especially when the instruction booklet is printed on really cheap materials, haha. 😂
So, one thing just to comment on, I think the design of the front wings is done to give the ship a more aggressive look with the wing angle. I kinda like it, honestly, even if it doesn't really "line up" with the original.
Just as a side note, if you compare it to the original Invader, the side decals as shown in the instructions are actually correct to the printing on the original.
(removed mention of getting one because RUclips's anti-spambot algorithm is extremely overzealous and deleted my comment)
So the reason the instructions tell you to place the stickers sideways actually doesn't have anything to do with it looking nice on a schematic and everything to do with accuracy to the original Invader. Blacktron Invader uses two of part 2345 with the Blacktron logo printed on it however that panel is designed to stand upright and was printed as such, so when it was used sideways as the cover over the central section all the logos ended up in the wrong direction.
Indeed! It’s quite strange, even that the original orientates them that way as the part was never reused. 🤔
Still, the mailbox and rear tail fin weren’t in the original… no need for those to be wrong too, haha. 😅
Those transparent red 2x1 plates on the rear wings feel so awkward compared to the original that had an entirely transparent red rear wings
Even more awkward is that, because they used tiles instead of plates, the rear wings have smooth tops while the front wings have exposed studs. It''s a weird mix of building styles.
Absolute madman commuting to old greys. If some more of the alternate suppliers would at least keep them in stock if TLG won’t .
I had a supplier of the stuff in a nearby city, but I actually bought him out of his inventory. 😅
7:43 I just got one in from bricklink as the set is needed to complete the story of the Star cruiser revival and was only $30 thanks to the rerelease... But anyway thank you for the review and to the viewer who sent it to you! Which all the flaws with the build besides the astect choice of the red arays is very much noramal for modern lego just ask any star wars fan how often Lego forgets it's motto... Still I happy to have it even to just invest in Edit: Also you made me want to build it when I didn't pay it much mind before...
Glad you got to take a look at this set, Slugger. It's something I have been passingly curious in, so I might pick it up if I can get a deal someday. That folding area in the center has always enthralled me, what types of mail can be stored in there?

The sticker application stressed me out... too bad they weren't printed. I didn't catch on to the orientation you brought up, quite an improvement!
This set has a lot of small, strange issues. It's a good thing that they're easy to fix though. I don't trust most modern Lego clips so I would rather swap those pieces out for either Technic bricks (axles or low friction pins might be better?) or one pair of ratchet finger joints for each connection.
Hey slugger, sticking two plates on each other was kind of a symbole of blacktron 1. Btw noticed that today while building the 6987, and at that set there were many steps with this building technic.😢

I was disappointed that there is nowhere to more securely store the robot and mailbox. I expected there to be space for them in the storage module but there are no studs for the mailbox to attach to and the robot has nothing to hold onto and can't sit down without being unable to close the module so you have to lay it down and then they rattle around inside.

I think, the logo orientation selected, because it's launched like a classical rocket. So when "parked" on the planet, the minifigs would see the logos in the correct orientation. Like the NASA and USA flags on the space shuttle or the USA flag on the Saturn 5.
Maybe! There's certainly a case to be made for that.

It seams like this will probably be a small fad of lego instead of a continuous one. I doubt the next set in this line if there is one will have as much buzz as the previous ones.
Hopefully! I felt like I was cutting against the grain on this one by simply not saying this is the best set since sliced bread, haha. It’s pretty good! That’s about it, in my opinion. 🤷
@@RRSlugger I’m assuming lego is waiting till their 100th anniversary to do something actually massive like remaster old sets from throughout the ages which is why they didn’t do a theme like that yet.

I've only seen the Blacktron Cruiser in photos and videos like this, but I have the original 6894 Blacktron Invader, and honestly, I think it looks better than the remake. The new GWP feels weirdly stretched, especially near the front. The original cockpit canopy was a 4x6, but the new one is a tapered 4x10! The effect of this is rather like playing an old 4:3 video game on a modern 16:9 monitor - it just looks off. I don't necessarily think they should've tried to make it closer to the original, though; imo it would've been better had they leaned into the differences and just made it an entirely new Blacktron I vehicle instead of a remake that doesn't quite match.
And as for the clip connection system: they totally should've used technic pins so it'd be compatible with the other Blacktron I sets. Missed opportunity, there.

Indeed, there are limitations to the GWP sets, though it seems inconsistent? The Bionicle GWP had prints, so who knows. 🤷
@@RRSlugger As I understand it, 2 exclusive prints is about the limit on a typical GWP budget - and that IS how many the Blacktron set has! One minifigure torso and one sticker sheet is two prints.
So many stickers but cost is always a factor, yeah the original orientation was objectively wrong.🤔 I also see nothing wrong in changing the design especially when it comes to parts not made or common to the era, build durability is always welcome.
I find it funny that compred to someone like Jang, you're complaints are basically all the things they praise. (aside from stickers)
Haha, I doubt Jang praised the shoddy engineering of this wing joints! Most reviewers I’ve seen haven’t mentioned it at all, actually… makes me feel like I’m going crazy. 😅
Your sticker placement seems so "right" that if you didn't call it out specifically, I would have assumed it was done correctly, and maybe even that the box art had an error!

I’m actually kind of digging how the rear red wings look, the tiles give it a satellite mirror-type texture. But this is just one slug’s opinion!
Yeah! Some blending of the two wing types would be interesting to experiment with. 😊
The black wedge plates underneath the clear red tiles make them look too dull for my liking. I'm not sure why they didn't use opaque red wedge plates instead. The wings look a lot more vibrant with them.
I was waiting for the galaxy explorer to go on sale or something, and then this became a gift with purchase and I decided to get it. Unfortunately I had to spend 200€ while the explorer was 100 so I had to get other stuff to get this. And that feels like a miss, the two sets directly reference each other with their scanner displays. It would have been perfect if you would only need to spend 100€ i.e. one galaxy explorer to apply.
All that aside, I like it. Especially without the center section. Also the original side flap sticker orientation would make for good banners in case of a rebuild?

1:50 Are new bricks always highlighted in the instructions? I haven't build a modern set in quite a while so this is new to me. 😮

The insanity of slug has brought upon us another insane upload, and boy is it a good one like always, although I don't really understand your beef with that one piece, i personally find it as regular as any other brick, though i maybe don't find it as horrific since i didn't exist for the majority of the 2000's and grew up in the 2010's

I think if Lego stopped making the smaller remade Lego sets GWPs they would sell more sets and would get more sells on the sets

But about the decal orientation, isn't it just as a reference to the original? I suppose the panelled stickers do allow for a better look, but yeah the orientation is mostly the way it is in deference to the original. Also the panel on yellow looks GOOD and that they had a Bluish Grey tile in there instead of yellow, or AT LEAST black is utterly baffling to me...!
On the radiator fins: I found trans-red pieces WITH the trans-red tiles gives the best result. :)
The side panels definitely align with what we see on the original, but then the mailbox and tail fin stickers are just… wrong, I guess? It’s very strange. I think the graphic designers really struggled with this one. 😕
Yeah the Mailbox in particular is just weird... Unless someone was a BIG Zelda fan...!

To be fair most military aircraft I have seen have there logos facing forward and the original set has the same print philosophy
The original certainly had the prints aligned that way, that's fair. 👍
I think it's a strange choice, nonetheless; perhaps they wanted to potentially reuse that printed piece in the original for a base at some point?
Most military insignia's are simple geometric shapes or circles with no up or down; however, most of the aircraft I've seen feature numbers or text aligned in the direction of the observer, not only aligned to the front.

Dark bluish grey and old dark grey have different purposes in my head. The newer colour looks 'cleaner' so I would prefer to use that for machinery and man-made structures. Meanwhile, the brownish tint of old dark grey looks better on natural rocks or cave walls. Although a castle wall, old house or cobbled road would benefit from having a mixture of the two colours.

It's a shame this set has as many problems as it does, as someone who isn't as familiar with older space themes, it feels like it could've been a good starting place for people who wanted to get into that stuff. And I feel like these problems could've been avoided simply by assigning a different designer who has more experience with like this.
`In the vast depths of space, a single Blacktron Cruiser was making the trip from a secret Blacktron base in the asteroid belt to the black market on the dark side of the moon. It's pilot, the only living thing abord, didn't really know the contents, but that was well above his pay grade. As he soared though the dark void of space, with nothing to listen to but the beeps and boops of his robot assistant and his own off-key whistling. Then, his instrument panel lit up and he saw a flash of light out of the corner of his eye. "Oh shoot," He muttered to himself, worried that the Space Police had found him, but when he looked he saw not a police ship, but a small one-man craft, mostly black and red, but with spots of grey and yellow connecting systems that, to his untrained eye at least, looked like they were all connected to white disks with a red swirl on them, like that mail-order hypno disk toy he had as a kid. He didn't think he had seen a space ship like this before, maybe some new group trying to muscle in on Blacktron's turf?
"Greetings, Blacktron Cruiser, I have come to retrieve a recent purchase of mine." Came a voice over the radio, but no video, this ship wasn't fancy enough to have a video a screen.
"Hello there, unidentified ship, how about you prove your supposed purchase, and then tell me why you're bothering me about instead of letting the cargo arrive, I mean, how would you even know if I was the guy carrying it?" The pilot replied, a moment later, his fax machine started printing out what looked like an invoice (indeed his spaceship lacked a video phone but did have a fax machine).
"As you can see, this purchase is entirely legitimate, and even identifies the ship and cargo container it's stored in." The mysterious voice was right, everything about this seemed totally legit. For a moment he weighed in his head the consequences for having his shipment stolen with a convincing forgery, versus not delivering on a product and decided he didn't care too much. A moment later he ejected the container for the product, apparently a prototype robot or something, and left it there for the mystery ship to pick up.
As the Spyrius Chief acquired the container he mused to himself, "Yes, this will do fine to replace the robot I lost in the Old West, after all, even after all these years robotics has barely kept up with this 'evil mech';" as it was known in some historical documents, mainly from the Space Police. There was a flash, and he disappeared into Time and Space once more.`
Yeah, I added the CMF Evil Mech into here, figured it made sense in terms of the ongoing story I'm building here. And yeah, that was my first description of any kind of the Spyrius TimeShip, which has to stay as purely a .Io file for now, just due to lack of physical resources (money included) to actually build it.

If you feel such disdain for dark bluish gray... I'll take those parts off your hands! I've nothing against old dark gray; it's a fine color, but I'm not going to commit my builds to using a color that's not been made for 20 years.
