44:00 JM8 is thinking about Juan Pujol Garcia, Agent Garbo. He was a Spanish double agent and part of the British double cross project. He helped sell the lie to the Germans that the Normandy Landings were a diversion and that the real invasion was in the Pas de Calais. Interestingly, he got really lucky on D-Day and communicated a message to his German handlers that the landings were happening that day, however the radio operator fell asleep on duty. He subsequently flipped his lid at the Germans, who were so apologetic that they continued to believe his reports that a greater invasion was incoming into the Pas de Calais area later in the month. They then awarded him the Iron Cross Second Class, which is very funny. His service ended when he was "arrested" at the end of June by the British. The Germans never found out that they'd been made.

I think most 3D platformers are bright because you need to be able to see where you're going. Several levels (especially the first one) in Psychonauts are dark and grungy and it can be difficult to see your drop shadow.

Just got to the part of the discussion around horror themed 3d platformers and a game that come to mind is Alice Madness Returns, an Alice in wonderland game adaptation going for the early 2000s edgy look. Haven’t played it personally but it’s a favourite of the gfs leading to her tattoo and my knowledge of a horror themed 3d platformer

Giraffe Town is probably the best horror I've seen in a 3d platformer. Course the final boss botches it (from a horror standpoint).
Because you'll be spending so time on trying and failing challenges, the horror in a 3d platformer has to be mostly a quiet kind of horror that is unsettling to be immersed in, punctuated by short peaks of the thrilling kind, but not allowing you to linger on it.

Yahtzee is right about Super Mario World. Even though Marty is also right about all the secret exits and stuff, but you can 100% beat Super Mario World without finding any of it and it is a complete game.

Space Marine being compared to Gears war isn't surprising, but I like that one has a focus on melee over shooting.
I've been waiting to play it for a while now.

I got some ceramic pulp fiction funkos, back before funkos were a thing. Much better quality than the current iterations.

What Yahtzee said about Silent Hill 2 being affective for having a forced camera and that a controlled camera would ruin the horror is something I also really feel about the Until Dawn remake. They've been pushing a new fully controllable "cinematic" camera from the announcement and it's always sounded like a terrible idea. Until Dawn is more cheesy than SH2 (not always intentionally frankly) but the camera in the original was clearly chosen for atmosphere and for a good reason. It's just going to be a thing no one likes once they realize how much of the game it truly removes.

I heard that Thor joke before in the Sandman. From Thor, even!
Though speaking of ARGs in games, Startropics was a formative game for me and it famously had that letter that came in the box, which you had to dip into water for an ingame password.

I had to go look up Mr. Mosquito instantly regretted it. Also as someone who used eat a ton of nuggets because they were cheap and easy. The quality has gotten even worse over the past 5 or so years. Point is they were garbage to begin with and now I don't even know what to call them. So it's no surprise Yatz's kids don't like them. Means they are smart.

I wouldn't have thought you guys would be in the group that say tank controls are bad. The new TR games are what plays like arse, relying on the game to magnetize you to every ledge. In TR1-6, you knew if you could make a jump or not. You had to look around the environment and plan how you moved through the stage. Tank controls don't feel clunky to me at all and the "modern" scheme in the remaster was awful! Silent Hill 3/4 has the option to turn tank controls off but the game is far better with them on due to the level design and the way the enemies move. The way you spoke about TR reminded me of how the Podcast Beyond (IGN guys) only seemed to be knowledgeable about new games and whenever older games came up they just talked absolute bollocks. I know Windbreaker have a bit more about them, but the TR discourse here was pretty shallow.

Exactly, there's a reason Tomb Raider continued to exist even after Mario and Rayman 2, there's something special in how that game controls.
