I like the dice sizes for stats thing. Ryuutama does it too, except you always roll two of them. A sword attack is str+dex, reading a map is int+int, or playing magical music is dex+spirit.
@@dicequeenDi Cofcof Fabula Ultima is a Ryuutama ripoff cofcof, okay the joke was said but I will elaborate, Fabula Ultima is kind of Ryuutama with a lot of miscellaneous mechanics stapled onto the game, gone is the amazing abstaracted battle map in pro of clocks which is one of the laziest mechanics from Blades in the Dark, also since it uses Ryuutamas system as base but wants to expand it into a longer campaign it ends up feeling stale by the point you reach level 25 out of 50 since isn't really a system meant for longer games but one/two-shots about "the time we went to the fair on the next time over" Edit: Also, no I don't hate Fabula Ultima, I just felt a little dissapointed it was literally a FFXIV skin for Ryuutama with non of the charm.
maybe it is because i just woke up, but i could not really follow the line of thought. but my group switched from 3.5 dnd to savage worlds a year ago and we love it.
Mostly just "Hey look go play pathfinder for Savage Worlds!" It's a joint project between the two of em where they use Pathfinder setting + Savage Worlds rules
There's nothing more encouraging than seeing you talk so passionately about the things you love and believe, Di. Thank you for the video Di, you made my day 💚🤎
I'm planning on sitting down and finally read Savage Worlds this year. There's a lot of cool things to be played using those rules, like Stingers & Spores, a fantasy game centered around bugs.
I absolutely love this video. As a SWADE propagandist myself, I can offer a few more selling points. *) Does a full castle seige sound awesome in DnD? Was it still fun after HOUR SIX? Savage worlds has a separate combat system for battles bigger than the party no matter the size (castle, city, country, etc.). The system values your time. *) Remember that moment in Critical Role C2 when a turtle dragon chased the M9 across the ocean? Yeah, that's normal in SWADE and has an even more exciting twist baked in. They're called "Chases," and do exactly what it says on the tin label. *) Do you like rolling for advantage? Technically, all player rolls in SWADE have advantage! We roll two dice and you get to pick the highest value. And, our dice are LITERALLY our stat for doing it so your character will grow more powerful in a way you can LITERALLY feel on the palm of your hands! *) Hate homebrewing guns because of how the players hate how it never feels like they're really using guns? SWADE was built from the ground up with guns and magic in mind. *) Does your party prefer acting out their characters more than tactical combat? Well, mine don't! But if they did, SWADE has a baked in social encounter system for making negotiations just as interesting as combat when you have a table of theater kids (and it's amazing when you see it all come together). ^ Plus, the characters that like acting will enjoy a character building system that can give them actual Plusses and Minuses to personality traits that are system built to be rewarded by the GM. I'd know, I give out bennies like candy and watch players spend them like a credit card!
My all-time favorite system would have to be Dogs in the vineyards dice pool system. It works really well for fluid back and forths between players and the GM especially during combat.
This may be kinda ambitious for just this channel alone but live plays of some of these new systems would be amazing for showcasing them! I'm hoping collabing with other creators looking into new systems would make this a lot more feasible.
@@dicequeenDi maybe an easier approach is just doing a book showcase lol. Just take your massive collection and thumb through them on camera while talking about them. Lucidpixul does this with his artbook showcases if you want an example.
I'd argue classes don't really bring 'much needed' structure to Savage Worlds, but I definitely think its a useful introduction to classless systems for people more comfortable with 5e/Pf
one of the most common walls i hear from players i try introducing into savage worlds (or other free verse skill systems) is 'i don't know what to do without a class'. the class structure isn't great, nor is it necessary, but tbh it really helps new players get into the game
From the little I know of Savage Worlds, I'm definitely interested in it as a system, and Pathfinder does have a lot of intriguing adventure modules. Also, I can't explain why, but the thought that popped into my head was Super Mario World for Savage Worlds. Maybe I need to homebrew that...
@@dicequeenDi It'll take me a while. And not going to be for public distribution, because I'm pretty sure Nintendo will zap it instantly if it gets out there, but I'll see what I can do.
Savage Worlds/Savage Rifts is my current main system. It's the best system I've ever used, and I have played many. Our group is old school, and being stuck in D&D because it's "popular" is not a requirement for us (we are not bound by social media algorithms, we have free will). I haven't supported WotC financially for many years now, because I have a functional memory and have not forgotten all of the BS they have pulled. It's a universal system with several game worlds available. At it's core, Savage Worlds rules are actually "fun". You have a mini-game for initiation and benny tokens used to soften bad rolls or add successes at critical story moments. It's massively flexible in general, and only as complicated as you choose it to be.
Did not see savage worlds coming though it makes a lot of sense, especially seeing how most 5e players wouldn't probably like the crunch from pathfinder 2e coming out of 5e.
it's an EXTREMLY fire system and yes, the pathfinder crunch is something 5e players are often blindsided by and will stay in 5e because of such. it's just completely out of left field. savage worlds is FAR more accessible in that regard
I would go as far as to say that the D&D box is literally a plato's cave analogy. With that being said, I still play some games that fit in the box, but the real answer is to being able to leave it whenever you want too, as well.
@@dicequeenDi do you think you'll bring some game sessions with it? It would be really cool! Also I have an unhealthy obsession with an Italian game producer called Fumble and I'm pretty sure they have some games in English too, I would be ecstatic if you'd look em up
@@dicequeenDi I'm cool with that. I've also been urging people to just try as many different and varied systems as possible. There is a whole world of RPGs out there and I'm so happy to see people finally starting to peel themselves away from the iron (golem) grasp of 5e.
Ngl I wouldn't call it rules lite at all xD it requires too much on the players to know to use it effectively. Vs a real rules light system just being "roll a d6! On a 5 or 6 you succeed"! It kinda sits on a comfy middle
I’m glad to hear more people talk about savage worlds it is a very good rule system and you can run lots of different things in it as long as you’re not focused on being really nitty-gritty but it is really good for like pulp adventure stuff. And if you really want to it can be a pretty dangerous horror game or survival game. It is just about how you use a lot of the optional rules. I also think a lot of the setting books are pretty cool
Excellent video, Di. Love the editing, the energy, and the passion you showed. Honestly, I'm pretty curious about Pathfinder. This has made me tempted to look up the rules and character sheets
I've loved Savage Worlds ever since I stumbled onto it from Serenity RPG/Cortex over a decade ago. So far I've not yet tried SWPF (I've gone for other SW fantasies, such as Hellfrost, Tyrnador, Gold & Glory etc), but sometimes my clicky finger does get this terrible itch...
I've wanted to switch from D&D for some time now but mostly because I don't want to deal with high level campaigns and the powerscaling of them, which is why PF2e isn't the perfect choice either. Thought about going with The Dark Eye but it's a bit too extreme (stuff like needing 10 combat rounds to reload a cross bow). Which is why games with rolls like that might not be for me but I'll take a look at other stuff in the genre.
I just invested $150 into pathfinder e2. Got the core book and dm book. And printing the core book ain’t cheap. Also 200 pages reading into core book I can’t walk away from this commitment.
Ok the idea of using dice for stats its nice, I played a oneshot of Shadow of the Demon Lord but its like 3/3 in the box, just a darker setting and a different take on classes (its different enought to be simpler, better even, but still) but it only uses d20+mod and a bunch of d6s and I need a use for all my dice. And a setting thats very fantasy sounds cool... Havent gotten the time to try other ttrpgs tho, gonna have to make a list that goes all year long
; w ; i always really wanted to LOVE Shadow of the Demon Lord but yes it's 100% in the box. i still haven't opened up my copy and it's sitting on my shelf for like, it's 2nd year
@@dicequeenDi While I would recomend it for people who only care for "dnd" as the only ttrpg they know or want to keep the "same" experience but not suport wizards in this very moment. I understand its like keeping liquor bottles in an alcoholics house, so I can see why you would avoid it (for now) and focus on more distinct systems, as someone who has already tried and liked other systems (like Call of chuthulhu & BESM) I like to think I am above relapsing to dnd as I already looked for other stuff to play every couple of months.
Very nice video! I have considered Savage World as well tbh, seems like a fun system, I also been considering PF2e straight up, as well two Japanese TTRPG those being Ryuutama and Sword World 2.5, honestly I wish more people talk about TTRPG from all over the world, I only discovered Sword World through sheer luck, and its honestly a very interesting 2d6 System that if anyone like JRPGs and or Anime they will most likely fall in love with the aesthetic. I recently joined a OneShot as a Nightmare (A race of Horned Humanoids mixed with some monster influence of sorts) that is a Fighter 1/Fairy Tamer 2, allowing me to cast some cool elemental magic as well fight in the front lines! The sheer customization is very amazing
@@dicequeenDi I def wish that there are more English Speaking channels speak about the game cause honestly, it is amazing imo so far just by skimming through Core Rulebook 1, been using a fan translation which includes all core rulebook, supplements, replays, etc
If you're looking to try a D&D alternative due to the ongoing OGL fiasco, I would strongly recommend 13th Age by Rob Heinsoo (the former Wizards designer behind D&D 4th edition). There is enough crunch to keep powergamers interested, but it's also simple enough that roleplayers and casual TTRG fans won't be annoyed by the amount of game knowledge needed to play. We've run several highly memorable and fun campaigns using this system and gotten new players into tabletop roleplaying with it, so would definitely say that it is a good d20 system.
Dang. I just bought Pathfinder 2nd edition. I didn’t realize it was keeping me in the D&D box. But I’ll still check out Pathfinder for salvage Worlds eventually. I used to play Starwars 2nd edition and loved the d6 system they had there. Also, I was looking to create my own role playing game. Do you know any open game licenses I could use that isn’t a d20 system?
; w ; dont feel bad about enjoying pathfinder 2! it's a good game! please support paizo, but also pf for savage worlds still supports paizo too :D it's not an open game license perse, but Lasers & Feelings uses a ccby 4.0 license and there are like a MILLION Lasers & Feelings games it's great
How much would the players need to actual invest into the game knowledge to actually play this Savage Worlds system? With D&D mostly everything is in the GM/DM 's hand and the player do the bare minimum, if at all, to understand the system.
hmmmmmmmmmm here! this two page comic covers the main rules, plus all the side rules and stuff in the book. www.uptofourplayers.com/ready-to-roll/savage-worlds-rules/ plus the game only costs 25!
I play almost anything, and sometimes I like a D&D-like, probably because I started with D&D more than 40 years ago(!) with the legendary Red Box. Despite /loathing/ Vancian magic, my brain is hard wired to like levels, hitpoints, and the rest of the baggage that goes with a D&D game. Decades of World of Darkness or Ars Magica (hands down the nerdiest magic system ever invented) has never completely cured my addiction. Savage Worlds has its place - I loved 50 Fathoms, was a playtester for Freedom Squadron, occasionally played in person with the couple who wrote Savage Rifts, and the guys who wrote East Texas U went to the same high school with a friend and once ran a mini-con to raise money for a buddy with heart problems. And I have played bonkers one-offs, like a game where we were actors in a Godzilla movie, or an awesome Bureau 13 version that didn't get published because they didn't have funding. I know the game, really. But sometimes it just doesn't work. Savage Supers sucks - fire and cold powers are just labels, and the powers totally lack any feel of awesome. The generic Fantasy rules simply bored me. I'm willing to try Savage Pathfinder, but after some really bad attempts, my home games are *really* resistant to Savage Worlds. I'd have better luck getting buy in for Villains and Vigilantes, and one of my players has swore to punch Jeff Dee right in the face the next time they see him. (Since both hang out in the Austin, TX area this might actually happen.) I suggest, instead, some weird but amusing variant of Powered By The Apocalypse. (I like either Bedlam Hall or Monster of the Week, but YMMV.) Character gen is a breeze - everyone grabs a playbook, make a few choices to customize your character, and you snag a few d6s from your absurd pile of collected dice. Done. Adventures are generally episodic and simple to grasp, character advancement is easy, and the most awesome feature possible: after a few advances, you RETIRE YOUR CHARACTER. No issues with power creep, no older character having mad powers compared the newbs, nothing. A few months and you are done, to pick another PbtA game or to springboard off the new and different game type of play to try something totally different. Play kids investigating supernatural weirdness in Bubblegum Cult, a Fate Accelerated game. Play Blades In The Dark, where everyone plays a member of a criminal gang and uses a new system based on PbtA. Go old school with Call of Cthulhu, playing totally normal humans facing mind blasting creatures from beyond space, who will probably either drive you insane or kill you, not necessarily in that order. Hell, play Honey Heist, a glorious one page game where the players are planning an elaborate heist requiring split-second time. Also, every player is a goddamn bear. Wearing a hat. (Not only is that a real game with attractive VTT tokens on sale, it has really great support on Foundry. The world is weird.) Golarion is a fantastic setting. But if you really want to enjoy it, play Pathfinder. Too much of the background material is found in good looking, well bound books that are at least one half mechanical crunch by page count. Also, if you can you find a copy (and a group), play Nobilis 2nd ed. It's a physically gorgeous book, looking like some art book sitting on your coffee table, and it's totally lacking any random elements. None. No dice, no cards, no precarious Jenga stack. Straight resource management. You can either do a thing or not, unless another player contests you, in case you expend precious resources that are hard to replace to outbid them. And each player is the embodiment of some idea - like Whimsy, or Ink, or Gaming Conventions - and have power over that concept. The big bads are creatures from outside your creation that are trying to wipe out your concept from reality. If they manage to ritually destroy the Lord of Blankets, then blankets are gone as if they had never existed. Just an amazing game, that I would play tomorrow except it requires a really exception person to write and run the games. /end advertisement
some points personally: 1. i'm not a big fan of pbta's personally. i feel their genre/series emulation actually limits character agency as all your actions become framed around facilitating the genre/series it's based on. you can't just punch a guy it's "escalating the moment" you can't just cry it's "pulling on heartstrings". this encourages a type of play i just don't personally like 2. pathfinder's ruleset is not necessarily tied to the setting. yes, many abilities are written with IP laced into it, but it isn't necessary. 3. pathfinder for savage worlds is STILL pathfinder, but it uses an engine i prefer over regular pathfinder as with pf1 i was used to 4-8 hour fights of attrition and ngl, i'm not in on that lmao. sides, they're adapting its main setting/campaign books to savage worlds which is extremely hype ngl. 4. i appreciate your recommendations, but what i'm suggesting here i suggest because i feel it'll be the best thing for the average player to actually jump to from 5e
@@dicequeenDi 1) I'm not actually a big fan of PbtA either, except as a fill-in because the player that was supposed to get the spotlight this week didn't show up, the ungrateful wretch. (And the Addams Family meets Downton Abbey setting of Bedlam Hall is hysterical as a one-off.) But it exposes players to some useful ideas, and the automatic sunset clause means that even if a group inexplicably want a PbtA campaign(?!?), their favorite PCs are going to go away in weeks at most. Most of the games I suggested taught some useful mechanism that opens up the world to more and cooler systems. (Though I still hold to Mutants & Masterminds or Champions for superhero games. You really need serious crunch during character creation. After that anyone can enjoy it, but building an enjoyable and balanced PC the first time needs a brutally nerdy system. It's pretty much two very different systems that are inexplicably close friends.) 2) You like SW to get your friends, acquaintances, and random people on the bus out of the D&D box. And that's great! But the ease of SW to adapt to *anything* means that a lot of convention games are based on some conceit that was much funnier in the author's head, and that's another player lost to SW. I think of those other systems like getting your friends to play Lords of Waterdeep as a boardgame. It really isn't that great a game once you get past the fairly shallow D&D theme, but it's a fabulous gateway game to teach worker placement games. I'd much prefer something like T'zolkin, but unless your players like Central American history and the Mayan calendar, you aren't gonna get it off the shelf on game night. (My mom, who actually does have a degree in Anthropology and a specialty in South American religions was more interested, but be honest, that's pretty rare.) 3) No, you're absolutely correct that Pathfinder's setting isn't tied to the mechanics. But the books are selling half of the column inches in a pricey printed manual for material you don't care a tiny bit for. That's a pretty expensive ask unless you convince Paizo to sell either system neutral or SW specific setting books. Who knows, Paizo is prolific in pushing books out the door, and they do already have most of the material written...some of the fluff in the new cheaper paperbound format might just show up on your shelves. Who knows? At which time, I will happily withdraw my objection. 3) A contrary point: A bunch of players dumped their collections of PF1 when PF2 came out. While a few subtle changes happened between editions, the used books are *much* cheaper, which also helps. And bundle of holding occasionally repeats old sales on PF offers on pdfs, good luck. I actually like the idea of SW Pathfinder, but worry that the typical broke-ass gamer won't be able to get the full experience. But happy gaming to you and your group, no matter how it works out. I just hope your viewers don't run into groups that already have given up on SW because of a different setting or GM.
I enjoy your random rants into the void! Comments for the algorithm! But seriously cool pointing out savage worlds, I've been meaning to get my group into that but we're big old pf1e nerds xD also pf2e xD.
@@dicequeenDi maybe whenever you feeling it's a rant while editing, you could put an black hole or something in the video. Perhaps I'll come up with something more substantial later on xD
I've been playing Savage Worlds for a few years. With the OGL mess, I've been seeing a bunch of other systems, but none of them do what I like about SW. I end up wanting to homebrew them to be more like SW
Just try other ttrpgs. Pathfinder has been my go to since it's inception (pf1) since it's more balanced (a.k.a I can play my wizard as best I can and not overshadow the ranger completely). Also makes weapons interesting. Setting is amazing. Dungeon crawl classics is something that makes me feel nostalgia as if I had played ad&d. Shadow of the demon lord is amazing but in a dark setting (soon to get a brighter setting in 2023)
I love the concept of this series! Let's discover new systems! I don't like the Savage World system, but maybe it was just because of the bad GM (for once I wasn't the GM)... However, Kids on bikes/brooms is great! I love it and it's really easy to adapt for other settings! I'm also learning Fate Core which is another universal system that looks really fun! And you can have most of the PDF for free because you pay as much as you want/can! (Please people support good game creators)
We will have to wait for ORC to see but I still think 2E can be played without even thinking of D&D. Heck lets take video games, I don't think about D&D when I play Wrath of the Righteous (Pathfinder 1E rules with mythics), but I do when I play Baldur's Gate. As long as people move away from Wotc I'll be happy about it :)
agreed. it's possible but i hear enough ppl calling ffg star wars 'oh star wars dnd' or blades in the dark as 'rogue dnd' that i have very little expectations of the average player
Ironically...I've been playing and running Savage Words since it came out. But going into that space was more to my liking for Deadlands, Flash Gordon, 50 Fathoms and Holler. I've not been into the epic fantasy for a long time. So I was not that into Savage Pathfinder.....even though I read it and see it has a great design, I'd use it for "d20" style games.
Personally, I use GURPS books as a reference/mining library, but don't actually play GURPS all that much. Don't get me wrong, I own *hundreds* of GURPS books, but I prefer faster systems for easier play. GURPS has a high learning curve for new players.
Continue, good to see more folks getting away from D&D finally, as someone ringing that bell for some 15 years now, love seeing this new energy coming in, puts a smile on my face. But go deeper, there's just so much, innovative stuff out there, savage world is fun, but it's really quite the same box still. Engines are a failed system, as they try to box too many experiences and narratives only by setting changes, there's better design patterns around, for people coming out of D&D, forged in the dark (and blades in the dark) as well as some pbta (and probably Dungeon world) are great entry points, that do change massively relationship at the table due to rules that control the fiction much more effectively
i mean i agree going deeper, but innovative doesn't necessarily mean good. and i'd very much argue that sw is sufficiently out of the box as its designed more like a hollywood action flick than the grit for grits sake d20 systems
@@dicequeenDi well, yeah, but in this case I do mean good, and I get that out if the box is relative. Imho The D&D box is more than d20, classes and dungeons, it's the relationships at the table, how authority and capacity to create fiction is regulated and how the games explicitly create fiction, and those innovations are 10 to 20 years old already and have made their way in the more mainstream games, but there's touching games out there that rewrite completely the roles at the table. I'm just an old radical here for rpg's, Just want to see a million small games, by a million designers, doing a million kind of stories better than any single game can make 2
Savage Worlds is cool but Golarion always felt a bit too theme park-y for my tastes, a bit of a mess geopolitically. Still a solid recommendation, though.
Rather than framing it as wacky and wild, consider framing the explosive dice as deadly and dire. If your simply rapier stab explodes, it's inside a blow right into the vitals. An unexpected, sudden, extremely dire shot neither you nor your target were expecting...
Hey, Dice, do you have a Discord channel? Or just Twitter, TikTok and Twitch? I'm kind of wondering about bouncing ideas for my original TTRPG system, especially since I'm kind of stuck with something.
So agreed on d20/OGL putting players in the same box as D&D. I have always been torn regarding the OSR especially. On the one hand these folks are writing things that are amazing, true, but on the other hand, their work still supports D&D and WotC/Hasbro. So yes, play non-d20-based games. There are at least a dozen better than D&$D.
it's a tough pill to swallow ngl. osr folks feel they're in their own world not supporting dnd (dnd is a folk tradition spiel) but inadvertently drive people back to the more commonly played d20 systems :T
@@dicequeenDi OSR writers use the OGL because most of their audience uses D20 rules, or are at least most familiar wth D20 rules. It's nostalgia as much as anything. The people that see games like Palladium and Hero System as their nostalgia, they are the lucky ones. It's never too late to play another game. There is more to tabletop than D&D, M:tG, and WH40K.
Yeah, I'm gonna keep playing D20 fantasy games. For D20. Because I like the system and I like fantasy. I'm all for letting people know about alternative systems and settings. I'm not ok with ytelling people it's wrong to play what they enjoy. Especially when you're comparing what they like to something that will _literally kill them._
mind you im 7 months late and hindsight is 2020...i dont think the pathfinder cant escape dnd take holds up even then. granted im someone who fully left dnd just cause i got sick of the chaos of homebrew unchecked, but this feels defeatist that you cant escape dnd by going to another d20 fantasy set. Peopelk SHOULD STILL play savage worlds cause its such a cool rules medium system no doubt.
I fully and totally support your efforts in general. I also think you should continue to work on editing your videos; it requires a set of skills that will only be improved over time and with continued work and effort. I have some quibbles (albeit minor) with going with Savage Worlds, but that has far, FAR more to do with GMing style and personal philosophies regarding TTRPGs (I prefer a 'right tool, right job' approach when choosing a game system). However, I think that discussion is way out of the scope of what you're trying to do, and I feel that my spare change on this topic may inadvertently harm your efforts, which is absolutely the last thing I want to do. This said, please keep going. Even if your reach is small, you're making an effort, and you would be surprised with what a solid, positive impact you can make on someone by your efforts in introducing them to new things.
i am also a 'right tools right job' person, but remember that these videos are also aimed at people that dont know those things and there's a major focus in just *getting them out of the door* without trying to high mind em part of 5e's dominance is its extremely low difficulty in get onboarded. its so easy its practically a slip and slide. if every conversation about trpgs came with a * it'll scare people away from trying new things by means of choice paralysis *"but by the way here's all the theory about this and you should consider all this info BEFORE picking a game."
@@dicequeenDi Indeed, which is why I didn't want to expand any more beyond a difference of philosophies. Because of my philosophies and viewpoints on this topic, I realize that my "Okay, so what are you looking for?" is not necessarily good at this time, or this topic... ...okay, crap... I think you may have given me an idea, but now I have to think about whether or not I want to implement it, and if I do, how to go about it TT_TT
I've looked at Savage Worlds, but I had problems with it. Artificer (3.5 version) is my favorite character class, and you just can't do that in Savage Worlds. (Not very well, at least, with how they handle magic items.)
Are you looking at the Savage Worlds core book? Pathfinder for Savage Worlds might have additional options that might help you. I have a few of the Savage Worlds scifi setting but haven't had time to check out their Pathfinder conversion but it looks promising
PF2e is just better than D&D 5e. The real reason people go back to D&D is because content creators never cover other games. This is because they kind of have to due to it being the only game new people know about (due to main stream recognition). Ironically this makes it so if I go looking for a PF2e game, I’m going to have to settle for something like 5e. If more GMs just pushed other games, the community would naturally follow for lack of D&D tables. It’s definitely a sort of toxic cycle despite a lot of people really wanting to play other games. I straight up just told my players I’m playing PF2e (all dnd players). They did it and now don’t want to go back.
pf2e is really good yes, but i'm still concerned its too much in the dnd-box and much like how many pathfinder people went back to 5e before starfinder/pf2e was established, i'm afraid it'll naturally have people slip back into dnd
I wouldn't say that. I still play pf and all. But it ultimately supports dnd systems and keeps their claws into us. Part of what helps fight that is playing it but also letting people that play with you your feelings on the matter. Sometimes talking and sharing is all you can really do
as someone that started with 3.5 and moved on to pf for its QoL changes, i couldn't disagree more xD 3.5 was a bloody mess with design choices the creators regretted years onwards. monte cook has way since disavowed ivory tower design as trash. i think you need to pick up better games
@@dicequeenDi It was the only version where you could actually build a character instead of having the handholding of Normie editions where even expecting the player to assign skill points is considered to be too much freedom. Nobody disavowed 3.5 except a handful of millennials who had no business working at Wizards. Everyone good who worked there died before they could see their brand turned into a skinsuit.
I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding the culture of the OSR space when you talk about "the box." The situation with people going from 3.5 to Pathfinder to 5e is a thing that, plainly, just does not happen in the OSR community. People don't go back. It is a space of DIY creators with a culture of zines and indie products that has never needed the OGL as anything more than a formality. It's the distilled folk tradition of fantasy role-playing, where system NOT mattering is one of the core assumptions.
if you honestly believe people don't go back, you're either willfully or accidentally blind to the plethora of people that go back to 5e majorly because either 1) it's easier to find games for or 2) their friends play it over OSRs. i've explicitly been hired as a 5e proGM by and for people that wanted that experience despite them having tried any number of OSRs. i'm not talking about people in the creator space making their games. creators do what they do, but a lot of the players that slip through the cracks and into the comfort food that is d&d&mac&cheese. and there are far FAR more players than creators.
Err no this "in the box" ism is complete nonsense.. do you play TTRPG'S is in the box!? Do roll dice.. you're in the box!?.. Pathfinder Second Edition A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAME TO THE ORIGINAL PATHFINDER.. this she mentality nonsense is not relevant at all. Cut the "in the box" crap and go play Pathfinder Second Edition.
The dnd-box is a framework theory of mine that d20 systems naturally end up driving customers back into the arms of dnd. Part of the strength of dnd is its extreme lack of onboarding friction. It'll always be easier to get into a dnd game due to an obscene amount of people that know how to play it/will teach it, as well as the sheer number of games. The average person will see d20mod systems as similar enough and will often slip into them. Plus? The average person also won't vibe with the crunchy maneuvering of pf2es manual stick shift gameplay vs automatic. The more walls of difficulty and complication pathfinder has, of which it has many, the more pf2 hopefuls will simply slip back into the comforting familiarity of 5e.
@@dicequeenDi And this is where you're wrong. I became a fan of Pathfinder Second Edition before this D&D fiasco came about.. I was a fan since 2021 and I have absolutely no intention of going back to Dungeons and Dragons in any version.
And I'm glad for you, but this video isn't for you then. I LOVE pathfinder/pathfinder 2s stick shift level control and crunch. My best memories are playing pathfinders 8hr sessions for 3 months straight. But that is not the average person. That is not the average 5e player. You need to be able to see that your experience =/= other experiences or interests. Lmao even starting this response with "you are wrong" is wild.
@@dicequeenDi No less wild then telling people "your almost right".. also if you're trying to engage D&D refugees into what is a poor man's substitute of Pathfinder Second Edition, then you should have prefaced your video with "whilst I agree that Pathfinder Second Edition is a good game, I would also like to suggest this game" and you also didn't mention the intent the video by missing out "this video is for D&D refugees only" and not for veterans of Pathfinder Second Edition. I have watched afew recent videos that you've produced, and you seem to go on a "I hate Paizo" tangent.. and this box thing is just another tangent that further dilutes the message. If this is your niche then fine.. I will no longer watch your videos.
We don't need an alternative to D&D. No. Stop it. They went to D&D from Pathfinder because D&D 5e is a better system. I'm not switching, I'm boycotting until wizards gives in and gives a real OGL. Watch the Dungeon Dudes episode on this and stop pretending people would like other games better if they tried them.
and if they dont give you a real OGL? you just drop all trpgs? or just keep playing D&D? then this video isn't for you. keep doing what you're doing, but this isn't your corner of the internet
these edits are ass
(...should i do em more or just rant into the void??)
Please talk about more savage worlds
keep doing them, you'll improve over time like newbie gms tend to do with rpg systems :)
No more half-assed edits. We're going to need you to put your entire ass into those edits moving forward.
More post D&D is good, and rant when there's a good reason to
edits all the time. even half ass edits are still better then nothing
I like the dice sizes for stats thing. Ryuutama does it too, except you always roll two of them. A sword attack is str+dex, reading a map is int+int, or playing magical music is dex+spirit.
yup! Fabula Ultima does the same! consider playing that if you want Ryuutama with a bit more combat
@@dicequeenDi Cofcof Fabula Ultima is a Ryuutama ripoff cofcof, okay the joke was said but I will elaborate, Fabula Ultima is kind of Ryuutama with a lot of miscellaneous mechanics stapled onto the game, gone is the amazing abstaracted battle map in pro of clocks which is one of the laziest mechanics from Blades in the Dark, also since it uses Ryuutamas system as base but wants to expand it into a longer campaign it ends up feeling stale by the point you reach level 25 out of 50 since isn't really a system meant for longer games but one/two-shots about "the time we went to the fair on the next time over"
Edit: Also, no I don't hate Fabula Ultima, I just felt a little dissapointed it was literally a FFXIV skin for Ryuutama with non of the charm.
Ryuutama I want to try that
maybe it is because i just woke up, but i could not really follow the line of thought.
but my group switched from 3.5 dnd to savage worlds a year ago and we love it.
Mostly just "Hey look go play pathfinder for Savage Worlds!" It's a joint project between the two of em where they use Pathfinder setting + Savage Worlds rules
There's nothing more encouraging than seeing you talk so passionately about the things you love and believe, Di. Thank you for the video Di, you made my day 💚🤎
I'm working on my own Savage Worlds setting, hoping to become an Ace under their licensing program this year.
I BELIEVE IN YOU FAM
I'm planning on sitting down and finally read Savage Worlds this year. There's a lot of cool things to be played using those rules, like Stingers & Spores, a fantasy game centered around bugs.
yes! i'm glad you're getting into itttttt!
It works really well for fluid back and forths between players and the GM especially during combat.
that's your favorite? that's actually kinda wild to me. i've never heard anyone say its their favorite xD
This may be kinda ambitious for just this channel alone but live plays of some of these new systems would be amazing for showcasing them! I'm hoping collabing with other creators looking into new systems would make this a lot more feasible.
I WOULD LOVE TO BUT GOD IT'S SO MUCH TO DO
@@dicequeenDi maybe an easier approach is just doing a book showcase lol. Just take your massive collection and thumb through them on camera while talking about them. Lucidpixul does this with his artbook showcases if you want an example.
Best Pal Brigade. Savage Tokusatsu. RUclips.
It's not the PF setting, but it's a really fun story using the Savage Worlds system.
Maybe I need to homebrew that...
holy fuck that's insane. i have to see that xD
It's massively flexible in general, and only as complicated as you choose it to be.
its honestly one of the best systems period tho i'm kinda biased ngl xD
Did not see savage worlds coming though it makes a lot of sense, especially seeing how most 5e players wouldn't probably like the crunch from pathfinder 2e coming out of 5e.
it's an EXTREMLY fire system and yes, the pathfinder crunch is something 5e players are often blindsided by and will stay in 5e because of such. it's just completely out of left field.
savage worlds is FAR more accessible in that regard
Loved it. I've just gotten into Savage Worlds myself (Savage Rifts, actually), but I didn't expect this one from you. Very good take.
= w =
it's honestly my favorite rpg of all time
I would go as far as to say that the D&D box is literally a plato's cave analogy. With that being said, I still play some games that fit in the box, but the real answer is to being able to leave it whenever you want too, as well.
I literally said that on stream today too xD
@@dicequeenDi Great minds think alike lol

By the way, well done on your journalism of the D&D beyond server. It's really great that you spread the word on what's going on with the mods there:)
YES! Urge to play Savage Pathfinder grows all the more!
I WILL FIGHT FOR IT TO THE DEATH
@@dicequeenDi I'm cool with that. I've also been urging people to just try as many different and varied systems as possible. There is a whole world of RPGs out there and I'm so happy to see people finally starting to peel themselves away from the iron (golem) grasp of 5e.
I had forgotten all about Savage Pathfinder! Thanks for reminding me.
IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITES DAWG GO PLAY IT
I like Savage Worlds it's rules lite but still has enough interesting character options to be fun
Savage Worlds is lit! I'm glad more people are discovering it!
its one of my favorite games!
@@dicequeenDi I've been playing since 2004 or so, and I love it so much that I starting writing professionally for it! XD

We had one session, and then decided to play BESM instead. XD
Kinda missing ttrpgs with all these news...
Haven't gotten to play since our dm had a new baby...
AYYYYYYYYY. consider that a really good besm alt is OVA RPG
The edits are great, but ranting into the void does have a certain charm.
DO YOU PREFER ONE OR THE OTHER HELP ME
Thank you for showing off SWADE! Love the system. My group has played a ton and it's a lot of fun for a quick, dirty system.
This channel is on a mission
; w ; that's extremely nice of you to say thank you
Savage Worlds is a fantastic system...
...for one shots or short campaigns. I have found that the system lacks a bit for spanning campaigns.
short campaigns is plenty tbh! i'm used to campaigns of 3-8 sessions at most. a spanning campaign is mainly a buncha short adventures woven together
Which is why games with rolls like that might not be for me but I'll take a look at other stuff in the genre.
please consider savage worlds! it does great with this
ICRPG might be a good option too, if I remember it correctly
I just invested $150 into pathfinder e2. Got the core book and dm book. And printing the core book ain’t cheap.
Also 200 pages reading into core book
I can’t walk away from this commitment.
hm, i will try it out. i have this idea for mid collapse rpg were i use location from google maps. there nothing more scary the irl places.
savage worlds is REALLY good for modern pulp
Savage worlds is my go-to system for gaming. It's a great system especially if you're into DIY gaming.
SWORD WORLD is good taste peak. i played like... 3 sessions of that? super good
@@dicequeenDi I def wish that there are more English Speaking channels speak about the game cause honestly, it is amazing imo so far just by skimming through Core Rulebook 1, been using a fan translation which includes all core rulebook, supplements, replays, etc
We've run several highly memorable and fun campaigns using this system and gotten new players into tabletop roleplaying with it, so would definitely say that it is a good d20 system.
its good but its still majorly in the box ; w ;
Do you know any open game licenses I could use that isn’t a d20 system?
; w ; dont feel bad about enjoying pathfinder 2! it's a good game! please support paizo, but also pf for savage worlds still supports paizo too :D
it's not an open game license perse, but Lasers & Feelings uses a ccby 4.0 license and there are like a MILLION Lasers & Feelings games it's great
BESM 4th Edition. That's my jam.
Yeeeeeeeee
How much would the players need to actual invest into the game knowledge to actually play this Savage Worlds system?
With D&D mostly everything is in the GM/DM 's hand and the player do the bare minimum, if at all, to understand the system.
hmmmmmmmmmm here! this two page comic covers the main rules, plus all the side rules and stuff in the book. www.uptofourplayers.com/ready-to-roll/savage-worlds-rules/
plus the game only costs 25!
(Since both hang out in the Austin, TX area this might actually happen.)
I suggest, instead, some weird but amusing variant of Powered By The Apocalypse. The world is weird.)
Golarion is a fantastic setting.
/end advertisement
some points personally:
1. i'm not a big fan of pbta's personally. i feel their genre/series emulation actually limits character agency as all your actions become framed around facilitating the genre/series it's based on. you can't just punch a guy it's "escalating the moment" you can't just cry it's "pulling on heartstrings". this encourages a type of play i just don't personally like
2. pathfinder's ruleset is not necessarily tied to the setting. yes, many abilities are written with IP laced into it, but it isn't necessary.
3. pathfinder for savage worlds is STILL pathfinder, but it uses an engine i prefer over regular pathfinder as with pf1 i was used to 4-8 hour fights of attrition and ngl, i'm not in on that lmao. sides, they're adapting its main setting/campaign books to savage worlds which is extremely hype ngl.
4. i appreciate your recommendations, but what i'm suggesting here i suggest because i feel it'll be the best thing for the average player to actually jump to from 5e
It's pretty much two very different systems that are inexplicably close friends.)
2) You like SW to get your friends, acquaintances, and random people on the bus out of the D&D box.
(My mom, who actually does have a degree in Anthropology and a specialty in South American religions was more interested, but be honest, that's pretty rare.)
3) No, you're absolutely correct that Pathfinder's setting isn't tied to the mechanics.
Me and my roommate are are starting a Pathfinder 1e.
AYO GREAT START

Got me interested in Savage Worlds, going to have to ask my gm about running a game
HELLA. pf for savage worlds is a whole thing and a half. my latest community post will also teach you how to play it!
Shadow of the demon lord is amazing but in a dark setting (soon to get a brighter setting in 2023)
yaaaaaas i love Golarian so much. DCC is also really solid too tbh
(Please people support good game creators)
its not a perfect system (especially for ppl that like grittier games) but its perfect for me
Thanks for the recommendation I'll "persuade" my DM to run it >:E
:D
A comment for the push vacuum.
THE ALGORITHM IS A MONSTER WE MUST SLAY
@@dicequeenDi ...can't really deny that.
Mork Borg?
Edit: Also for my own personal opinion: Play GURPS 4e please. It's my favorite system.
Personally, I use GURPS books as a reference/mining library, but don't actually play GURPS all that much. Don't get me wrong, I own *hundreds* of GURPS books, but I prefer faster systems for easier play. GURPS has a high learning curve for new players.
It's a great library for rules and mechanics and ideas. 100% recommend
And those are all indie designers, not corps of any size
i mean i agree going deeper, but innovative doesn't necessarily mean good. and i'd very much argue that sw is sufficiently out of the box as its designed more like a hollywood action flick than the grit for grits sake d20 systems
I'm just an old radical here for rpg's, Just want to see a million small games, by a million designers, doing a million kind of stories better than any single game can make 2
@@dicequeenDi but in general keep up the good work, you are doing good
Can't wait till I'm off work to listen to this.
:D i'll be waiting
My favorite systems have always been things like GURPs & Fate which are not class & level based.... But my players have never liked them. xD
skill systems don't have the class/level framework. ; - ;
pf for savage worlds retains the skill systems but ALSO has the class frame
Savage Worlds is cool but Golarion always felt a bit too theme park-y for my tastes, a bit of a mess geopolitically. Still a solid recommendation, though.
Golarion is pretty cool but it absolutely doesn't try to do anything other than be a kitchen sink setting.
it's a bit, but if you stay your regions you'll have a good time
If there is more I will be here for it! This was great.
i will throw a million and a half systems at yall
Savage Worlds is a beautiful system that I played for many years, but I can't with the extras and whacky randomness. Not in my prime time fantasy.
Rather than framing it as wacky and wild, consider framing the explosive dice as deadly and dire. If your simply rapier stab explodes, it's inside a blow right into the vitals. An unexpected, sudden, extremely dire shot neither you nor your target were expecting...
@@dicequeenDi No problem. I can't with the deadly and dire randomness. :D
Hey, Dice, do you have a Discord channel? Or just Twitter, TikTok and Twitch? I'm kind of wondering about bouncing ideas for my original TTRPG system, especially since I'm kind of stuck with something.
Yeeee on Twitch there's a discord link. Go follow that one
@@dicequeenDi Thanks!
Might as well be Pathfinder but for GURPS.
gurps is pretty solid too, but it doesnt have the cool explodey anime dice
@@dicequeenDi this is exactly the mechanic I am not a fan of in Savage Worlds. I prefer a grounded realism of GURPS.
And for that exact reason I'm a fan of SW xD I like bombastic action and wild fests if heroism
One Roll Engine baybeeeew
Even if your reach is small, you're making an effort, and you would be surprised with what a solid, positive impact you can make on someone by your efforts in introducing them to new things.
i am also a 'right tools right job' person, but remember that these videos are also aimed at people that dont know those things and there's a major focus in just *getting them out of the door* without trying to high mind em
part of 5e's dominance is its extremely low difficulty in get onboarded. its so easy its practically a slip and slide. if every conversation about trpgs came with a * it'll scare people away from trying new things by means of choice paralysis
*"but by the way here's all the theory about this and you should consider all this info BEFORE picking a game."
I recommend Symbaroum as an alternative.
its pretty aite
Nice work!
Danke!
I've looked at Savage Worlds, but I had problems with it. Artificer (3.5 version) is my favorite character class, and you just can't do that in Savage Worlds. (Not very well, at least, with how they handle magic items.)
it's wild to me that you commented about the topic of the video, before the video actually went up fam xD
@@dicequeenDi you were talking about it live on stream, what did you expect lol
@@dicequeenDi You said right above in the description "spoiler alert: it's savage worlds trust me."
Are you looking at the Savage Worlds core book? Pathfinder for Savage Worlds might have additional options that might help you. I have a few of the Savage Worlds scifi setting but haven't had time to check out their Pathfinder conversion but it looks promising
@@crastestpixles5972 Yes, I was looking at the Core Rules. I saw Pathfinder for Savage Worlds on DTRPG, but haven't picked it up yet.
Awesome thoughts.
Glad you think so! i'm goin for BROKE
I agree with this take 100%
:3 a fan of it i take?
@@dicequeenDi I actually don't like savage worlds, haha. I just think that getting people out of their ecosystem is the priority
ohh Fabula Ultima!
IT'S A GOOD GAME GO PLAY ITTTTTTT
How much to get you a better mic?
700$ maybe?
So the answer is to never play anything fantasy based that has anything mechicnally close to DnD?
I wouldn't say that. I still play pf and all. But it ultimately supports dnd systems and keeps their claws into us. Part of what helps fight that is playing it but also letting people that play with you your feelings on the matter.
Sometimes talking and sharing is all you can really do
Ok interesting how many books involved in that?
just one! pathfinder for savage worlds, and maybe the bestiary if you want a little extra. both are maybe 25 on drivethru? 40 if you want physicals
Mmmm..wisdom.

I tried to youtube speedrun but it still look like 8min!

Or, alternatively, pirate the infintiely superior 3.5 books and evolve past D&D: Normie Edition.
as someone that started with 3.5 and moved on to pf for its QoL changes, i couldn't disagree more xD
3.5 was a bloody mess with design choices the creators regretted years onwards. monte cook has way since disavowed ivory tower design as trash. i think you need to pick up better games
The Waffle House found its new host.
it subsumes me
Nonsense! lol
yessense
And I like the crunch and mechanics of PF2.
