- I finally got around to doing a reaction to Matt Garstka's playthrough of "Red Miso" by Animals as Leaders! In this video I do a breakdown of his playing, stylistic choices, musical approach, and his gear setup. This was a fantastic video and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the master @drummusician at work! I personally learned a few things myself watching him play, and I highly encourage you all to check out his channel, social media, and his website! All links below! If you enjoyed the reaction please do no hesitate to talk to me in the comments, and please like as well as subscribe if you haven't already! Thanks so much everyone for watching!

Also he breaks down the song writing process in this video too. I discovered this gem after I uploaded my video! ruclips.net/video/0mjZANuOuek/видео.html
I love his explanation of the ending.....guitarist Javier Reyes telling him he had to end the song with "some of that Matt Garstka shit". LOL
This channel deserves more than 6k followers.
this is very kind of you to say. i appreciate your words
Yesss!!! This is what I've been so keen to see!
Hands down one of the most phenomenal drummers of the age. His ghost notes just speak to my soul.
There's just something about Animals As Leaders and Matt's drumming, that just leaves you feeling smarter by listening to it 👌🏾🤣
lmao! yes i can agree with this!
One of my favorite drummers and band in general.
the musicality is absolutely top notch with these guys
you have the best ''react videos'' I have seen so far, instructive and pertinent interventions. thanks for the work ! keep up!
At 6:26 you write "that bass sounds so good". As far as I know they don't have bass in Animals as leaders. The sound you think bass is actually the other guitarist Javier Reyes.
But they record bass in the studio. Other times they use synth and samples bass.
@@terran236 But the part referred to is absolutely not bass, it's the lower register of the guitar as they would play it live
@@Mackathne are you talking about the distorted sounding 8 strings fair enough. But the problem is an 8 string guitar is all about the overtones rather than the fundamentals. That's what the bass guitar is for. That's what I was referring to.
Bro, that sounded smooth af. Great breakdown of his playing
appreciate that bro!
4:59 That Always Sunny edit got me good 😂
Such a great video. Love how direct you are in your explanations, I learned a lot from this video that has made me appreciate Matt's drumming even more than I already did.
i appreciate this bro! also grateful you took the time to check out my video too.
Your knowledge and cohesive analysis, as well as the ease of presentation, is phenomenal dude.
Subscribed and will be diving deep into the channel. So glad I stumbled upon this.
Love your reaction and commentary. Matt Garstka is one of my favorite drummers. I would to see you do a session on Gavin Harrison as well, Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief, King Crimson.
im glad you dig the video! and i will certainly add these recommendations to my reaction list!
If someone asked me to show them my favorite drum video ever, I would probably show them Red Miso
Definitely a fair thing to say!
Animals as Leaders are turly something else, what an incredible track. That was beautiful to watch, lol I got mesmerised. I loved the analysis, and I am always impressed with how you can feel out time signatures that I find truly astonishing. It just feels off kilter to me and I can never place my finger on it lol. Great reaction as always, love the analysis, and I particularly loved the breakdown on what samples are and how he had his kit set up.
im really glad for this! Its comments like this that help reassure me that Im doing the right thing as far as making videos like this. there's always so much more I can talk about but its difficult to find the balance of what to do for the audience.
@@DrumlionMusic hell yeah I always appreciate your analysis so as much as I'm a singular voice in this torrent of weirdness that is RUclips I will be up for it :)
Matt is one of my favorites.
Thanks, awesome reaction and breakdown, very useful too, best one yet. Matt is incredible. That sauce bit had me in stitches. 10k subs around the corner🤘
i appreciate you and im really glad you enjoyed the video! your support has always been very helpful to me and i thank you for that
Great reaction video! Well done sir 👏🏼 Love your thorough explanations and input. Definitely helped me notice things I hadn’t previously noticed while watching this play through.
thanks so much! i appreciate your words!
Great video. Dudes sick man. Rediculous creativity.
completely agree with you!
Good stuff man. Love to see how the drummer is thinking and working. Very good song. Keep it up man. l am loving learning more about drumming.
im so glad you enjoyed the video friend!
Matt is freaking awesome ! Heavy hugs from France 🇫🇷 🤘 ❤️
absolutely, and thank you friend!
Great video sir
appreciate this!
Dude, what an awesome reaction. You are so well-spoken and knowledgeable. Great stuff
this means alot to me. Thank you so much
@@DrumlionMusic Youre very welcome
Loved the editing and breakdowns. I died on the "highest compliment from musician" xD
Don't be afraid to pause more the video to explain to us, lowly mortals, the magic going on. We're here for that (at least, I am). Instant subscribed :)
i really appreciate this! and ill keep your words in mind. i try to strike a balance with the pausing because ive been told i pause too much, and in the analytics all the video dips are during when i talk. but ill try to keep in mind there are actually people out there like you, that appreciate what i have to say. so thank you so much
Nice🙂thank you🥁🤘
of course!you're welcome!
I think you'd love the meinl studio session video of Chronostasis. It's a project by Matt Garstka and guitarist Joshua de la Victoria, and chronostasis is their newest song.
I love Animals as Leaders! They are beyond talented! I don't know much about the band. Backstory n such. Don't worry about the haters. Please break stuff down more if possible. I think most people are here as a pure listener and don't know a lot of the technical stuff. Great break down. Keep it up 🤘
appreciate you man. and thank you for supporting me
Subbed 😀
Huge thanks for this!
best comment about matts drumming is "his drum set must be haunted ! with all those ghost notes "
Those look like DW's new top of the line pedals the MCD (Machined Chain Drive). Matt's DW endorsement is relatively new (about a year or so?) as he was a Tama endorser for a long time before that. I kinda like how he added a second bass drum but didn't change the rest of the setup leaving both rack toms above the primary kick. Nice reaction and review....just subbed.
Im going to have to check these pedals out because they definitely look impressive as hell. And thanks so much for subbing. Hugely appreciate it
Please check out more playthroughs from him, I suggest Gordian Naught, Monomyth, Thoughts and Prayers or anything from the latest album really
sounds like a plan!
Matt really has way of playing that shows he's been doing pretty much his whole life (to me at least). Guys like that have a way of making the hardest playing seem so much easier than it really is. You can miss a lot when he plays....but shiiiiiiiiiiiit. Like you said...'that's the sauce'!!
exactly bro!
As im sure u would agree, their is Not much that needs to be said. In regards to Matt's next level drumming abilities. Matt is my favorite drummer to watch, when it comes to the Progressive Genre just other worldly skill and technique..💀🤘
not to mention, he just seems like a super cool, and nice guy as well
@@DrumlionMusic i would agree. When u do another Reaction to another one of Matt's videos u should do Gordian Naught..
@@ericdravenX00X someone else mentioned this same song as well. ill have to do that
Bruh, i have no idea what you be talking about drumming wise xD
But i do like watching the videos you do.. cant wait for more black and death metal drumming videos from ya.
thanks! and thats coming too. Matt has been on the list a long time so i had to get him on the channel
@@DrumlionMusic I understand bro.
To be honest i dont always watch your vids when you post them, more often than not i tend to watch a video from one content creator and then just binge watch a bunch of the videos from said content creator xD
Matt is just nasty bro. You should check out Clay Aeschliman from Polyphia. He's done several playthrough's, my favorite being GOAT!
Clay is coming to the channel really really soon...
Subscribed brother!
Please check out The summoning by sleep token, Just beautiful drum work
Definitely planning on it!
Please check out the new breakout band Tallah! Their drummer Max Portnoy is son of legendary drummer Mike Portnoy and his is sooo good! The whole band is amazing and bringing back the nu metal sound from the early 00's, but modernizing it with their own twist! Hard to find a good "drum video", but definitely react to some of their tracks if possible! They just released a new sophomore 2022 album of the year, "The Generation of Danger". The songs, "Shaken (Not Stirred)", "Overconfidence", "The Impressionist", "For The Recognition", are good places to start if you can! 😀
Definitely checking this out!
ASL - Gordian Naught next
I’d like to hear your thoughts on Aron Mellergard in Dirty loops. Might not be your cup of tea but he’s a hell of a drummer. If you check him out I think the song work shit out might do the trick👍. Thanks for the reactions🙏
Ill definitely check him out. Hes been mentioned before and my curiosity is definitely piqued for sure.
Have you checked out August Burns Red? I feel like you'd like Matt Greiner's power, speed and style
i do like August Burns Red, I just haven't done any deep diving on the drumming. Definitely sounds like a solid recommendation to me!
i love how one of the best drummers in metal is essentially just a jazz drummer, it adds such a unique flavor to the genre
Check out Elliot Hofman with Car bomb
Have you checked out Blake Richardson?
Hes on my reaction/recommendations list actually
Sauce!
🤣
7:00 another way to describe what you’re saying is Matt Garstka isn’t a drummer, he’s a percussionist. lol
lmao, yes. this also true!
They don't have a bass guitar, they use 2 8-strings.
The hats and smaller effects cymbals sound great but I don't like the crashes and china. It could just be the mix, but they sound pretty unpleasant to me.
really? ill have to go back and listen and see if anything stands out about them
Let's be real, a zubaz ensemble makes you a more proficient drummer.
lmao! maybe i need to update my wardrobe then
There is no bass guitar in Animals as Leaders..
so what is Javier playing?
ok i deep dived into some research on this. Tosin said they are using a guitar to essentially emulate a bass sound by manipulating it in Cubase. Sonically it sounds like a bass but they are using a guitar. so thank you for bringing this to my attention. i definitely needed more explanation on what i was hearing sonically though.
Great video my friend 👊👊🇺🇸🇺🇸 great seeing you as always!!
thanks so much! appreciate you!
There is no bass
There is only two 8 string guitars no bass is involved crazily
