@@Warchild0311 Eloy's great but Matt's got more finesse and is more versatile. I'd say Eloy is the best metal drummer out there, but overall, Matt's concepts and execution edge him out slightly. I do love Eloy's Brazilian influence into his playing....makes it totally unique!
Matt did a breakdown of this song and how he came up with the parts on his channel. That last fill was instigated by the second guitarist, Javier Reyes who said something along the lines of "you can't just end the song, you have to throw in some of that Matt Garstka shit!" LOL
No bass player. It's two guitarists on 7 or 8 strings and the drummer. Tosin Abasi developed thumb slapping for the guitar and that's why it's so thumpy and bass-y. They're amazing.
kids a genius, please dont apologize for going back and relistening to parts, having these songs broken down and having someone with a music background as blown away by this music as I am makes me want to keep watching these videos. more asl please
He has playthroughs of almost all songs of the new record. All insanely great. You really can‘t go wrong there. But favorites are Monomyth and Gordian Naught. There is also a great live version of The Brain Dance where you can see the full band.
“I don’t know what time signature that was in right there…” - Tony and every AAL fan. Awesome reaction, man, I really enjoyed you adding what you could. Easy sub for sure
6:55 I love your genuine reactions and the way you break it down. My dad is a drummer of over 40 years so I appreciate all the drum reviews without actually knowing what's happening on the technical level. It's been great introducing him to new music that I find from this channel. He also just casually says he is going to text and ask his friend Mr. Dennis Chambers if he knows who this beast Matt Garstka is lol. Thank you for the videos.
Love your endless wealth of technical knowledge about all things music and instruments. Pretty rare to have a reaction video channel with the amount of chops you have as a band teacher, it's great stuff. Another drummer I feel like you might get a kick out of is Chris Turner, who's primarily a metal drummer who just released a solo drum album. Any of his one-take playthroughs for his current album are brain-shattering!
Good call on Chris Turner. As well, if you want to go deep on Garstka's influences (which overlap so many of mine / why I find such an affinity for MG), it goes something like this: - Dave Weckl - Chris Coleman - Calvin Rodgers - Stuart Copeland - Dennis Chambers - Vinnie Colaiuta
what's crazy is he composes everything in protools before sitting down and attempting to play it. Apparently this took a week to get clean and show ready
Matt (alongside recording amazing playthrough videos) actually has transcribed all of his drums parts for the album this song is off and has it on his website. I am a guitarist and I picked up a copy because I wanted to see his mind on paper like that. I highly recommend checking them out!
Garstka recently put out a video of his thought process when creating the metering for Monomyth. Matt's in-depth analysis is a great look into how his drumming brain works. Highly recommend!
what a band they are. Matt is absolutely next level as is their lead guitarist tosin abasi. I would love to see you check out monomyth play through next!
in your video at 5:15 where you go back to replay that one section. That particular blast beat that Matt plays is so damn cool with specific accents within the blast beat making it very very unique. there was a podcast i saw with matt where he said he would like to incorporate more blast beats within his music but with accents. super cool
Got news for you, there is no bass players. There are two guitarists both of them being eight string players and Tosin Abasi has otherworldly techniques that cover slapping and pulling reminiscent of base technique and other percussive techniques mixed with alternate picking legato you name it. This is a group for those that simply love the art of music for the technical as well as the aesthetic and sound aspects
There was such a cool Thall moment in the middle there. Very un-AAL, but really nice. Speaking of Thall. Check out Vildhjarta, their new album is so interesting. Their sound is specific to them
Great reaction, great drummer, great band. They definitely make people scratch their heads and grin. If you're into more instrumental bands, The Arsitocrats will seriously blow your mind. Marco Minneman is Gaska, with more time playing.
I remember seeing in an interview somewhere (I think it might have been with Javier? its been awhile)...where he talked about how working with Matt and Tosin is crazy because they are so technical. Matt will come in to recording with what looks like a page of hieroglyphics that is just time signatures and things he wants to play lol
The Meinl channel has a ton of well filmed and produced content, and it doesn't hurt that some of the best, most boundary pushing drummers are sponsored by them. Highly recommend the playthrough of "Ancient Kingdom" by Brann Dailor of Mastodon. Great drumwork and a completely gorgeous kit. Love the content, keep on keepin on 🤙🤙🤙🤙
Matt is a Beast among Beasties as a metal drummer/composer. But seeing him as a guest on VF Jams with Ghost Note behind him elevated him to absolute #1 in my book. His delicate and complex style there is like contrasting Mitch Mitchell to John Bonham... only Matt is apparently BOTH! 😳
He can’t just be a human and modulate between duple and triple pulses, he’s got to throw quintuples in there too. Also I think those syncopated hits you were trying to feel out were giving me the sense that they took a more traditional duplet-grouped rhythm and just sort of converted it to a quintuplet pulse and let the accents fall on the nearest equivalent beat.
Thanks for doing this reaction. I adore Matt's playing. Next on the list of drummers is Gavin Harrison! You won't regret it, he's the next drummer alive.
somehow missed your reaction to this. matt is for sure that guy that is your favorite drummers favorite drummer. i would say gavin harrison, thomas lang, vinnie colaiuta, and a few others are in that category. the least known guys relative to the mainstream that require a certain level of understanding to comprehend and appreciate.
Animals as leaders, your favorite bands favorite band. Well, if you’re into progressive stuff. You’ll often find some big names sitting in the audience at their shows.
You should check out Dirty Loops, Its a Quincy Jones produced band fusion band but with super catchy pop hooks. Work Shit Out should be a great song to react it
Matt is insane and one of the best drummers alive right now. I highly recommend looking up Blake Richardson of Between the Buried and Me for another monster drummer unlike anyone else. He has some sick playthroughs of new songs like "Fix the Error" and "Revolution in Limbo"
Hey Tony. I marched with David Vaughns, Jeff Barber, and others in the 90s. I study Garstka's music on the daily - he's currently my biggest inspiration and influence for where I'm headed next. Most of this song is, believe it or not, in a very straight forward 4/4, 7/4, and 3/4. The super interesting work surrounds the displacement and modulation groupings. Also - you probably know this by now, but there is no bass player. Two 8 string guitarists who are on the same level, or higher, than Matt is, on their own instruments respectively. Lastly, I'm finally working on a channel as well, and, if you're interested, will reach out for some collab when it's up.
Oh shit! Dave was a tech when I marched. I see him pretty often when we have him as ax guest judge for Seahawks Drumline auditions. Same with Jeff here and there. Let me know when your channel is up and rolling
