Saw them most recently at Swanfest. They absolutely killed it. I’ve seen I think 2 or 3 other times before that and I feel like they’re only getting better live.

Saw them a few months ago i think? Cant remember, but it was in Atlanta and saw them perform their new album and play some older songs (Cafo, Physical Ed, Ectogenesis) and it was great. I had been waiting to see them for years and every show I would book for got canceled. We were the first there by about 5 hours, and got front of the show. It was a fantastic time
Seen them once 10 years ago in Australia on the "Weightless" tour, just after Garstka joined the band. It was truly incredible and exceeded my very high expectations.
Parrhesia is a masterpiece of a record. I do understand primarily modern metal listeners may not get into this record. However, if you also love prog and jazz fusion, this album is like crack. Matt Gartska craftsman on the kit, insane composer in the pocket, and can fuck with everything rhythmically.
Love that you paused to mention his cymbal work. Its what stands out in this new album the most to me in regards to matt. he was already exceptional on older stuff but he took the cymbal stuff on another level on this one. So playful and delicate its a joy to listen to. regrading the writing, matt mentioned that Tosin starts most of the songs out with his guitar part but there are some exceptions, like monomyth, where matt came up with the beat first and the guitarists wrote over that.matt alks about a lot off background stuff on his youtube channel.

Just graduated from school and this album feels like a breath of fresh air , of accomplishment, and also it just feels great to hear something new from one of your fav artists. The energy you will carry with you after hearing this is extraordinary & seems to get better and better with time. I love that feeling. Thanks for covering these for the drummers . I guess its no different than the air when it gets cold signifying the change of seasons but im grateful for both and i am excited to live every year once again since its another year i can listen to this stuff.

El elstepario i really good simetimes outstandind but compering to Garstka in general and in particular is way lower rank drummer but still top Level drummer;)
@@zielon82 Estapario played all AAL songs quite some time ago, he can play play. The question then comes to, can he write amazing music too? His new song is pretty awesome with Serj, catered more towards general audience since he has quite a sub base.
Your dissection is on point, fantastic content. I’m sure you have a lot of Between the Buried and Me fans who would want to see you react to their drummer Blake Richardson. I’d suggest their song Extremophile Elite or Specular Reflection, both are great to show his talent
For a full band performance, check out their live streamed performance from Anaheim back in 2020 during the lockdown. It was a virtual performance and was well lit and is probably some of the better live footage of the band.
Matt has been on one of the latest episodes of The Downbeat Podcast by Craig Reynolds, drummer of stray from the path. Matt explains there some of his influences and also how Animals writes music. Maybe interesting for you to check out.
I've followed him since Berkeley and he's had a stubborn resistance to jazz and traditional grip..there was this competitive thing between him and another student who was traditional grip so it always felt like he was trying to prove you could do same with match grip, so tho I haven't seen traditional jazz, he has had a affinity for afro Cuban, other afro centric and Brazilian, probably flamenco and tabla type ryhtms too,but iv only seen him do literal seconds worth of anything swing related,but world music he's said he learned alot from, tho since he graduated Berkeley there HAS to be video of him doing jazz bc he would have had 2 or 3 semesters at least in jazz there, so no doubt he can do it,but like I said stubborn resistamce
Just a quick note I mention in loads of AAL reactions. There ARE bass tracks in the songs. If you check the production credits they're either played/programmed by the band or guests. I believe Misha and Nolly of Periphery have contributed in this way. :)

I recall seeing/hearing him, I think, in the VF Jams series with the VF All Stars... coulda been the Zildjian series... either way, I was blown away by how tasty and light parts of his set were. INSTANTLY became my favorite metal drummer, and put him on my all-around all-time short list!
You should check out Matt Greiners Zildjian Live. First thing that popped in to my head when you brought up drummers like this playing with elite jazz players.

“What is the creation process like for these guys? I’m always fascinated with groups who are this progressive…”

Matt said in a drumeo that someone already had transcribed a song and it wasn't correct. lolz According to Matt sometimes Tossin gives him some ideas like he did for the splashed in Red Miso. I wonder if was the same for this song in that splash section? From being a percussionist myself. I can hear that he plays his drums like a musician would!! WHOA!! My alter ego has done the same, although maybe nothing to write home about!? Hmm....

Re: the composition process its very interesting how they wrote the first song on madness,arithrophobia, it was Matt's idea,(tho he admits most of the songs start with an idea from tosin) and 'it was an exercise in all the things you can do in 4"..he's asked on his channel for teaching ideas and ib been pushing for him to explain and demonstrate what he means by that in re: to arithrophibia,or whatever that 1st song is called,hopefully he acquiesced to my request one day,but im probably the only one who asked that

Hello from New England... I would imagine a drummer of Matt's chops understanding of meter and the knowledge and creativity on how to manipulate it would know how to read and write music...I'm of the age where we had daily music class in grades 5-12 so although I have been taught a certain level of thoery it's been many a moon since those days lol..I'm a very different type of drummer than this scientist...Im extremely physical (Broke a wrist fingers and the outside of both hands lol) with sweat snot and vocalations flying every where..My technique is solid but I'm a heavy hitter and wouldn't even approach trying to learn a song of this caliper...Peace ✌️

No bass technically, tho they drop the 8th string often essentially into the bass clef range AND Tosin has played bass on the albums , not sure about this one but joy..def

Would you be able to react to some of the pieces from Garrett Williamson, songs of his include "Settle it in Smash", "Get Along" and his own rendition of "Jump Up, Super Star". He very much inspired my passion to pursue music and it would be awesome to hear other musicians perspective on his compositions.
