Who did I miss? Let’s fight!
justin faulkner is amazing
Spencer Prewitt, Matt Halpern, JD Beck, Maden Klause
Louis Cole!!
you should see Echa Soemantri, Legit one of the best drummer in the world
Chris Coleman
Larnell makes me want to play the drums, he's that inspirational.
Add to the list: Gergo Borlai and Roberto Porta
Gergo is incredible. I’ll have to watch a few videos of Roberto, as I’m not too familiar with him!
Mike Mitchell
I don’t even know how it’s possible for Mike Mitchell’s hands to move that fast
Virgil Donati. Arguably the most technically advanced drummer to have ever lived!
I had to learn one of his note-for-note transcriptions once. Was absolutely insane haha. Odd time signature shenanigans. SUCH a great player. I haven’t actually heard of him in a while
Technically astounding but has all the feel of a potato
Virgil has a way with pushing and pulling the feel and messing with the modulation through that and none of it is easy, but it's not impossible either- learning the guitar parts or bass lines makes what he's doing more obvious than algebra behind odd ball lines.
@@mrburger007 What he does is astonishing, but it does leave me a bit cold. I'd rather listen to Benny Greb 😂
@@coolpool1969 Yeah Virgil is technical immense. But I'd rather listen to Jason Bonham 😆
Awesome video, really accurate descriptions of the drummers. Going to see Yussef Dayes in London in August, can't wait!!
Jealous!
Chris Dave, Benny Greb, Gergo Borlai
What about the new school of drummers? Justin Tyson, Andy Prado, Corey Fonville, Noah Fürbringer I mean come on! Let’s open up the path for the future of drums, lets open our ears and minds to welcome a new sound. These guys are definitely shaping the future of this instrument, and very few people are talking about them.
Look at Ramon Montagner’s session videos on Meinl’s channel. Incredible Brazilian drumming, very technically innovative but also disciplined in the sense that he stays musical.
I’ve seen those! That swiping 16th note thing he does is insane
Tim Alexander is probably one of the most underrated drummers out there. His drumming is peak musicality.
Primus! I remember singing "my name is Mud" over and over as a child. Only to realize many years later how epic the drummer was.
Nate Smith and Benny Greb. Very few drummers can match their magical, ineffable sense of groove and pocket. It's a mysterious thing that happens somewhere in the grid that we mortals haven't discovered.
I could listen to both of them play a 4/4 groove all day
In the metal world, Eloy’s been the ‘talk of the town’ for quite some time now…
For sure! Been watching him play for years. I just meant that as his Slipknot thing was a trending topic over the last few months.
Bro such a cool video man
For sheer virtuosity, power, incredible double bass and mind bending rhythms....it’s Virgil donati for me....there are others of course like Thomas Lang etc in that realm...but me for me Virgil is the pioneer for face melting drumming, pushing the boundaries if you will of the instrument....
I’ve always found Virgil more fun to listen to compared to Thomas. Both are absolute machines though
@@brettclurdrums gotta throw marco minnemann in that party
Thank you For adding maison 🔥🙌🏼
Yeah man! I constantly just watch him in disbelief.
Everybody leaves out the great Sonny Emory, Dafnis Prieto, Keith Carlock, JoJo Mayer, Jeff Tain watts
But I get how hard it would be to make a list of the "best' because there is to many not to mention....
Gavin Harrison and Carter Beauford
Awesome video ! 🎉
And ofcourse can't forget El Estepario, this guy insane
Larnell Lewis Just needed 20 minutes to make me fall in love for drums. i listem música and like drums since ever. But it wasn't Nico macbran from iron maiden (The Band of my life), wasn't Jhon Bonann, neither Mitch Mitchel. Was him, Larnell Lewis.
Love it!
The sound of Gavin Harrison's Sonor kit at the Zildjian 400th anniversary celebration alone is as impressive as any of the drummers here.
Gavin Harrison would have been one pick for me, just incredible musicality and feel
I used to have a book of his transcriptions. Was really fun working through those. Maaaad complicated, but soooo creative.
My top five:
1 Larnell Lewis
2 Dave Weckl
3 Benny Greb
4 Nate Smith
5 Steve Smith
I love Yussef Dayes, probably in my top 10 with Steve Jordan, Jost Nickel, Juan Carlito Mendoza, Isac Jamba
Yusseff & Nate smith up there for me. Both have great albums of their own compositions which are so good too 🔥
Yes of course love Larnell & Sput. Gorgo Borlai so great too
They're incredible musicians.
So glad you mentioned Danny by far my all time favorite his drum parts are out of this world 🌀
He’s a great player.
If you like Garstka, check out the new Tigran Hamasyan records! Oh and Casimir Liberski - Cosmic Liberty, ah stellar (pun intended) modern jazz album
Metal guy here just saying that that Spencer Prewitt from Archspire should be on this list. He is the fastest drummer in extreme metal. Also Navene Koperweis and Jamie St Merat.
Watching a few videos of them now. Wiiiiild
A couple of drummers I like the moment are Thomas Lang, Marco Minneman and Benny Greb!
German and Austrian power haha
Hard not to make a bigger list. There’s many more…two off the top of my head are Mark Guiliana and Aric Improta.
My top 5 favorite drummers
1. Larnell Lewis
2. Thomas lang
3. Calvin Rodgers
4. Eloy c
5. Thomas Pridgen
Malcolm Catto. he's really a producer and involved in many projects. he's not choppy, but for me he plays beats with the same magnitude as, say, the funky drummer. playing linear stuff doesn't stay with me. powerful beats stay with me for years.
I’ll need to check him out
Robert 'Spud' Searight
One of my favorite drummers, actually!
Maaan thats a good video there. I appreciated all of your honest opinions. But if we put them in a concept like ‘’todays drummers “ Danny Carrey shouldnt be there. Dont get me wrong i worship Danny but if we talk “ at the moment” Mark Guiliana , Ari Hoenig , Marcus Gillmore these guys changing the shape of Today’s Not only jazz music , Music in general. Very cool content by the way. Thank you
Thanks for watching! Yeah it was more of a joke kind of thing, because actually pinpointing "the best" drummers isn't actually possible. But year, LOVE those jazz guys you mentioned.
Chris dave : hi.
Ps i didnt watch the video yet but hes a magician.
Oh and the feel of questlove. Hard to beat his work with dangelo when it comes to feel.
Oh and ari hoening when he play freaking melodies... On drums ! It think hes the best at that.
"Oh lets play billies bounce, ari take the head !"
Chris Dave is incredible. Also LOVE Ari Hoenig!
I think when it comes to musicality and expression there is no better drummer than Brian Blade
My pick is vinnie he is a chameleon. Can play so many styles and can play with the best musicians in the world. In concert, in a studio session... if any of this was transcribed. He can sight read and play it.
Number 2 from sleep token 🤘🏻
I've loved watching his videos and demonstrations on Drumeo.
Morgan Simpson is my pick. his drumming with black midi is extremely good. its sad they seem to have broken up now though..
You had many of my inspirations on here but I'm personally missing Morgan Ågren, Richard Spaven and Travis Orbin.
I'm a huge fan of Richard Spaven! :)
Riccardo Merlini’s technique is extraordinary…fastest hands on the planet by a long way…faster than Buddy Rich even. Totally mesmerizing and his explanation of how he does is right there for all to learn. Johnny Rabb is one of the most technically proficient drummers ever and one of the most inventive and creative. Michael Schack is a super powerhouse, a walking encyclopedia of music, audio genius and all 3 standout humans!
All 3 of those guys are incredible. I grew up trying to mimic Johnny Rabb Roland videos haha
Ricardo is fast, but all of his 300+ bpm videos are bs. It's more a controlled tremor to be honest. And his covers and improvisations are just not good enough. Don't get me wrong, I acknowledge his skills and respect the guy, but he is so fucking overrated.
@@brettclurdrums aren’t we lucky :) then there’s Manu Katche’, Stewart Copeland, Gavin Harrison, Billy Cobham, Matt Chamberlain etc etc it’s crazy how many amazing drummers there are
But can they play Back in Black?
All great drummers of drumismus. Shows also your taste. There are plenty „best drummers“ in the world who play different styles of music.
If you want dig deeper into music and be amazed by something new for you, and hopefully challenging the stupidity of the idea of a „contest“ you’ll find them fast. Just for a good start a name: Tyshawn Sorey
Maison Guidry is the King! Jay Kalo is also great!
Jay Kalo's solos are out of this world.
All anyone really has is their favourite drummer's whether they prefer technical players or groove oriented players looking for what inspires us and what we want to learn to play the type of music we want to play
Nailed it on the head here, man!
I like Billy Martin from Medeski, Martin & Wood
Did you go to jazz fest? Yussef Dayes was epic
Just missed out unfortunately
LARNELL !!
Such an inspiration
I like Thomas Haake and Baard Kolstad. El Siberiano Estepario is maybe the most entertaining.
I think El Estepario does really well on social media, but I'm not entirely sure if he'd be as entertaining when watching him live. I may be wrong though. He's an incredible drummer. Also just a prime example of how far hard work can get you.
Louis Cole ! So creative
Check out his clown core stuff lol
Yussef Dayes is almost pop status in drummer world and I'm a big fan, have most his records and got to sign them too. You should check out his earlier band with his brother United Vibrations. Check their Boiler Room. You're welcome.
For sure! Will check that out
@@brettclurdrums ruclips.net/video/QPceama9r1E/видео.htmlsi=EDvUEjli_XcDPwxP
where are Marcus Gilmore and Ronald Bruner Jr????
The last was a joke, right? Anyway, I agree with a lot of the names, and a few, although very good, I wouldn't say are up there with the "best in the world," but won't call them out. Off the top of my head, I'd add Mike Mitchell, Dan Weiss, Chris Dave. Maaaaybe Eric Moore or Isac Jamba. I'm definitely forgetting, like, 2 dozen others.
el estepario siberiano has to be in this list , even if he isn’t in a significant band like a lot of these other drummers , his pure techichal skill is unbeatable and the grooves that he comes up with are just crazy . He’s also a great entertainer and that’s why he probably has so many subs . And the crazy thing is that he’s not even 30 yet.
@@aalmonte4927 He might be. But my issue is that while his RUclips videos often border on mind-bending, there isn't much to go on outside of those videos, and you will never look better than in the videos you upload of yourself. I'm not a metal head, so there's that, but those metal projects he's been a part of seem very... generic.
Danny is a great composer, a master of polyrhythms and limb independence but I agree that he’s probably not among the top 0.1% technically speaking.
Definitely a joke haha. I do think it’s true that the other drummers on the list could be replaced in their bands while Danny Carey couldn’t though. But yeah, there are like 300 drummers that could probably be on this list 😂
You guys should check this one out: Jonathan J. Ludvigsen
I haven't heard of him. I'll need to check him out.
The lack of Ron Bruner Jr, Sput, and Dave Weckl really surprised me.
Sput is one of my personal favourite drummers actually. And then Dave Weckl is just out of this world. Probably should have included them haha. But this is why “best drummer” lists are an endless cycle. Too many to choose from with too many variables
@@brettclurdrums agreed
Kendrick scott and perin moss for me
I have to check them out!
what do you think about jay kalo, sarah drums, they are very expressive, do you think they are up there?
LOVE Jay Kalo’s drum solos 👌🏻
RONALD BRUNER JR. nuff said
Jonathan Blake
Add Tomas Haake 🎉
Probably the biggest acknowledgement of a great drummer is when you think " hey, i could do that". The greatest drummers, or i should say ARTISTS in general, they make it look EASY. I don't know what to even call that. .. is it having that "IT " ?
Baard Kolstad from Leprous
The rabbit hole of the drums are deep. The best drummer is the most highest paid.
Carter Beauford anyone?!
Carter is the man!
I could listen to Carter playing for hours
Chris Coleman
my most favorite drummer
Senri Kawaguchi
Aric Improta
Clay Aeschliman
He's amazing
Chris Dave, Thomas Pridgen and Mike Mitchell… Aaron Spears (RIP)
Ronald Bruner ??
Calvin Rodgers
@@That0T Calvin Rodgers is out of this world. I'm doing a drum festival in South Africa with him, ZackGrooves and Kaz Rodriguez and I'm crapping myself about it haha
Steve Gadd
One of the greatest!
Marco Minnemann
Totally! One of my earliest memories of him is watching him play with a band while they were wearing space suits.
nekrutman?
Andy Fisenden
Thomas Lang
I don't believe most popular drummers are the best ones! My favorites are Eric Moore II, Maison Guidry, Mike Mitchell, Chris Coleman, Tony Royster Jr.!
Emphasis on Maison Guidry bc he’s NOT HUMAN 😂😂
Vinnie Colaiutta?
One of the true GOATs
Danny's the 🐐 for sure, ii from Sleep Token is super creative and so clean
Some drummers that needs to be consider;
Jojo Mayer
Louis Cole
Thomas Lang
Anika Niles
El Estepario Siberiano
Brett Clur ;)
Louis Cole is one of my favorite drummers🙌🏻 love his Clown Core stuff lol
Thomas Lang is one of the best
@@pablogaldino9753 He's good, but not that good.
Jay Kalo
BILLY COBHAM. the only man to have defeated GODZILLA openhanded.
Lol!
With Me Being A Good Drummer I Never Judge A Drummer Who’s Playing By Himself I Judge Drummer When They’re Playing With Accompany Of Musicians,,,,Ps, This Is Why Steve Gad,,Dave Wreckels,,Dennis Chambers And Other Within That Greatness Stands Supreme,,,,🏰🇺🇸🇯🇲 Mr. KeenObserVatioN PhD,🇯🇲🇺🇸🏰
ii from Sleep Token.
Chris Dave
Richard Spaven
Robert Sput Searight
Yoni Madar
Yoni's technique is out of this world. Would love to see him playing with a band.
Eloy Casagrande no contest
Go watch Anything from Morgan Agren…we’ll wait while you make a new video 😂
I love that 😂 will go check him out right now haha
@@brettclurdrums Morgan is who Thomas Haake goes to for advice!
morgan simpson of black midi
I can't believe I've never heard of Mason Guidry, and I watch a lot of drumming videos! I wonder why some phenomenal players go under the radar and are kind of ignored by the mainstream drumming community? Mitch Mitchell, Virgil Donati, etc. Maybe they are just too hard to get your head around and are too esoteric. People just don't understand what they are doing!
Yeah I think Maison Guidry is kind of like strong coffee. Some people just won’t get into his playing as it’s quite niche
II (2) Sleep Token
Lars takes the cake
Can't deny his impact, though. Haha
I think you’re getting ‘best drummer’ confused with ‘favourite drummer’.
By all means, enlighten us for we are mere peasants😆 For real though, who is this best drummer then? If you can actually mention someone new to me, I'd gladly check it out
@@Tminus89 what the fuck are you talking about?
@@waltonbrown Your comment sounded like you disagreed with the chosen drummers. Or did you just mean that there really is no best drummer because it's always a matter of taste? Anyway I was wondering if you'd name one drummer or not
@@Tminus89 Yeah, Clur’s question is simply dumb arse stupid. Certainly we have favourite drummers, but ‘best’ drummer, thats bullshit.
@@waltonbrownI did mention in the first 30 seconds of the video that lists of best drummers are “usually a bunch of nonsense”
Nate Wood
zach hill
Drumming has turned into a sport, and that has nothing to do with music. There is no way to determine who is the "best" drummer, nor should there be. Drumming is an art form, and art is subjective to one's taste. Should the best drummer be the one with the most money made by playing drums? Or the fastest? Or how about the slowest drummer, is there a category for them? At least you qualified with "...at this moment.", because if you're simply judging by speed and complexity to arrive at your conclusion then there is always someone else out there coming soon who will achieve that goal. My favourite drummers are all in successful rock bands from the old days, and to me they are the "best" at what they do in their bands. And I've yet to see anybody hold a candle to Peart and Bonham.
Missed my boy chris turner! From oceans ate alaska and his solo stuff too
Maison looks difficult but it`s not, Duplantier plays exercises, Carey is overrated, the rest pass although in the rnb/jazz/funk category i`d put Mark Guiliana, he`s way more versatile and live he`s a demon. It`s good you didn`t put Estepario in here.
The whole idea of “best drummer in the world” is ridiculous at best.
You cannot leave the actual best drummer in the world off this list, Dave Weckl. Other greats to mention must be Dave DiCenso, Keith Carlock.
And don’t forget about Vinny Culotta then there’s that German dude I can’t member his name he’s wicked
Too many great German drummers to count haha
Sorry son you’re not even close number one virtual Dani number two Thomas Lang number three Matt Garska! nobody touches these guys although your guys impressive, he ain’t even in the same ballpark!
