- The Last Leg | England to Sicily Road Trip Part Three
We left our overnight accommodation in Rome and headed off south to the town of Cosenza. On the way down we took the Bonneville of the trailer and rode into Naples for pizza.
And then onto the final stretch; the ferry from Villa San Giovanni to Sicily.

Germans make the rules, British stick to the rules, French bend the rules, Italians say “what rules?” Ride safe, love the apartment, such style! Loving this adventure.
This is spot on!😆👌🏻
Racial stereotypes but I do think it's spot on where driving is concerned . Ever driven in Thailand or India ?
@@specialized500 I live in Thailand. I ride a motorbike every day.
@@specialized500 no? But seen Indian roads on TV, looks totally bonkers!!
@@user-sw2lv3zp6o Yes but that doesn't mean it's not a dangerous place to drive or ride .
As a Neapolitan living in the UK I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay in Napoli! You've summarized it's unique qualities and quirks perfectly. You're basically surrounded by history and wonder almost everywhere, but everything is drowned in the utter chaos of the Neapolitans just being themselves and following their own rules
Thank you both for bringing a slice of your Italian travels to us here in the UK on a Sunday morning whilst I have my home produced honey on toast with my fav Italian coffee ☕️
Oh that sounds glorious- enjoy, Jonathan🙂🍯☕️
freddie, you should be a tv show host, youre so good at this!!
Absolutely. They would be great for an updated version of "Wish you were here...?"
Such an amazing trip down south to Palermo 🤩 You’ve such an eye on details of the beautiful things, moments, the accommodations & People, without bothering anybody. The cutting, the music, the views … 😮 it fits so well together: a big complement to Monica for the perfect 🎥!
This was my sunday morning breakfast 📺 - can’t get any better ❤ Ride safe, take care of the stuff & have lots of fun, you wonderful 2 ✨
Thank you so much PW- I’ve shown this to Monika🙂🙌🏻
I, to this day, 10 years later, still feel my greatest achievement in life is returning a hire car to Naples airport after a week on the Amalfi coast and a few days in Naples, unscathed. Absolute bedlam. Wacky Races. Worst experience was 4 lanes of traffic on cobble stones with a tram line in the middle filter into 1 lane after traffic lights. Was just a race to get there first when they went green. Absolutely unreal.
I feel your pain Chris because we’re staying directly above a tram line here, and it is incredible watching the desperate attempts of gridlocked cars to clear the tramline before a tram arrives!
" Ok Monica we're going to do half & haIf". I must admire your appetite; an entire pizza each.
Pizza in Italy is a single serving. It's far, far healthier and lower calorie than the American style pizza you commonly get around the world.
A fully loaded Italian pizza rarely goes towards of 1200-1300 calories, while a large pepperoni from dominoes is around 2700, for reference
Cake for breakfast? I can't think of a better way to start the day.
Then again "I stop for cake" is my riding motto.
I love the madness of Italy, I’ve done loads of motorcycling there and never stop laughing, rules what rules. It sticks two fingers up to the health & safety crap of the UK and is all the better for it.
It's ok getting rid of health and safety regulations if you don't mind dying I suppose
Haha yep- I cannot disagree with you Mark!🙂
Never have your music selections been more perfect than for the gloriously mad 2 riding scenes in Napoli. My head was bobbing to the hectic beat, leaning for the gaps and twitching from the overtakers just watching on my laptop. Bravo, molto bellissimo.
Like you, I always had an impression that Sicily was a small quiet island. The buildings in Palermo are much bigger and taller than I would have expected. Excellent filming Monica !
As an italian fan of yours I suggest you to stop a couple days in Torino (Turin) while traveling back home. It’s a really nice and quiet city to visit, with lots of history and a nice cuisine. But most of all you can find an outstanding Automobile museum, that you’ll love. Have a nice holyday in our crazy country :)
Loving being along on the trip. The last time I drove in Palermo the cars were 6 abreast on a 3 lane road. Italians definitely make their own rules. Hope the rest of your trip is just as good and nothing gets stolen!
I don’t think it’s changed much since then😆
Thanks Steve!
Great film. I must be getting old because travelling through Italy looked like hard work. I think Lake Como would have been far enough for me, but it'll be getting cold there soon so I can see why you pushed on south. The British view of Sicily is coloured by watching Inspector Montalbano every week: it's based in small-towns and the countryside and looks gorgeous. Palermo, by contrast, looks like my idea of urban hell (but nice apartment!). Montalbano's house is in a small coastal village called Punta Secca and is now a bed & breakfast. If you have time, see if you can spend a night there, it would make a great episode. Buona fortuna!
Freddie, your poor old bike is sounding less like a Bonnie and more like a pneumatic drill with each passing video. Incredible its still going.
Thanks for sharing your latest Mediterranean odyssey with us moving- towards- winter Brits! Treasure every moment ...
Respect for joining downtown Naples traffic!
It took me a bit to convince myself to rent a Vespa when I was down there. But it‘s the best way to explore that wild hilly city.
For anyone reading this about to ride a motorbike in Napoli: be sure to ride in the direction of Posilippo as well. Wonderful curvy roads traversing the city with amazing views of the bay , islands, volcano …
Insider Tip:
grab some finger food/drink and take it along to Belvedere di Sant'Antonio a Posilippo for an evening snack or dinner. Wonderful view and an adventurous switchback road down the hill when you leave. (no tables)
Loving this series - should include more Monica if she’s willing. Thank you for sharing
Really glad you’re enjoying it, James🙂 I do try my best to get more of Monika in the videos, but it’s not the easiest thing persuading her to be in front of camera. I’ll get there… slowly😆
@@FreddieDobbs As one veteran to another when it comes to the female counterpart of the species, that is the correct way to approach all things. Slowly and pay keen attention to any resistance or warning signs before proceeding 😄
I’ve been to the UK and I’m an avid Triumph owner. I absolutely love the continent as well. I have to thank you on behalf of all of us for the time, camera work, music selection, commentary, and frankly just good humor and taste you bring to the screen. If you have a patreon - include it. Be safe and until your next installment, enjoy yourself

If these two did more long trips in the Fiat 500 id watch all of them! I just got myself a 500 again. I had one about a year or so ago and missed having it so got another.
These videos make me want to take a trip of my own 😎👍
Totally 💯% enjoyable, appreciate the cost breakdown overview as with your loving attention to detail concerning your overnight stays. Thankyou both for being so inspiring to travel…🥰
Greetings Freddie, JUST found your channel. I really am enjoying your videos. Seems you are a lot like me riding and showing the love and joy of motorcycles! Well done! Cheers!
Fellow Himalayan rider here. Love your channel as well.
@@stuartchapman9024 thank you
Yeah crazy road manners including (in Sorrento) a family of 4 on a scooter dad driving with a boy in front of him a mama clutching a small child on the pillion. Followed by a guy transporting a long wardrobe door (maybe 8'?) positioned sideways (the door, not him), plus the usual melee of scooters and mopeds undertaking and overtaking, no helmets, no protective gear. Endless fun. Main danger to cars is people shunting yours back and forwards to get into 'their' space. Park judiciously! Great flat in Palermo - superb.
Thank you for bringing us along on your travels! I miss traveling around Europe so much!
Thanks Philip- Europe really is so fantastic for road trips🙂
Napoli looks gorgeous. I must have seen it in a film, it looks ever so familiar.
Really enjoying this journey.
That looks flipping great! Your going to have a wonderful time, my wife reckons it’s all much better than what’s on the TV. So please to keep her happy 30 min episodes per night 😂
I’m delighted to hear it, thank you Stuart!😀
Love the idea behind this trip and this episode is a cracker. The music choices are varied and inspired and really help make the driving/riding sequences even better. Crack on Freddie and Monica
Thanks Trevor🙂
Thought I'd seen Freddie in Sheffield yesterday, but it was only his dobbelganger!🤣
So jeaulous when I see these videos.
The interior is probably all Sicilian ceramics, make sure to visit some of the towns where they sell them. They are Burgio, Caltagirone, Patti, Santo Stefano di Camastra and Sciacca.
Driving in Italy is crazy indeed, the more south you go the less the lines on the road have meaning and listen for the horn music as you stop to let a pedestrian cross. It's simply not done there 🤣
Keep making these videos and living the life mate. Hope you have a glorious a stay as I did several years back.
Can't wait to buy my own Triumph and do some road trips myself.
God I miss Europe. And thanks for the wicked soundtrack. Love from NZ as always.
Sending all my best🙂👋🇳🇿
Great video Freddie
What an amazing experience riding through Italy reminds me of Mad Sunday at the Isle of Man TT 😂
I think I’ll be well prepared if I ever try Max Sunday!
Hello Freddie and Monica, nice trip through Italy. Be sure to visit the filming locations of the police series El Comisario Montalbano. It will be fun.
Loved that programme. The location and the ladies plus the way it’s filmed
Wow Palermo. I was last there 15 years ago visiting my in-laws. I stayed for a month in a small town called Santo Stefano De Camastra in Messina. I also stayed at the Grand Hotel. Miss lounging out at the cafe's with family and friends. I remember the food ( Pasta ) and Sword fish was amazing no matter where you ate at. The Sicilian hospitality is unlike any other. I think the only thing I was disappointed in was their breakfast offerings. I'm a big breakfast NY kind of guy and a pastry with espresso drove me crazy after just one week. I missed my full size cup of coffee and big hot breakfast platter. lol Your video has me thinking, It's time to go back.
Thx 👍🏻
I imagine your loyal Fiat to be somewhat protected from vehicle theft by being right hand drive. Fingers crossed, great commentary by the way....
So happy you got there safely 👏 those roads look crazy…and the 500 still keeps soldiering on 👍 great video and enjoy…you deserve it 👍🇬🇧😎
Thanks very much Alan!🙂
Cute appartment in Cosenza.
And the Palermo place looks truly wonderful. Goosebumps!
(I'm a Italy fan ;) )
Brilliant series Freddie and Monica,I’m up early on a Sunday morning in sunny Essex just to watch your post.
Your vlog is like waiting for your favourite weekly fix of a series on net flix.
You are both outstanding. Chris from sunny Essex👏👏👏. Ps,been watching you both from the start of your channel.
Thank you Chris and hello over in Essex👋
Hugely appreciate you staying with us for all this time!🙂
I could palpate your nervousness in Napoli, but thanks for showing it us. I have ridden a scooter along the amalfi coast 2 up that was hairy and many years ago. I have also ridden through Northern Italy and totally different and relaxing
Glad you made it ,looking forward to watching stage 2 of the adventure
6 words: We love what you guys do.
Those tan riding jeans are nice. The tiny attic bathroom is wild!
Visited Messina a couple of times from our cruise ship, we found it tired and dirty, not the best example of a Sicilian town for the tourists.
Another excellent vlog from you both, most enjoyable.
Fantastic!!!
Fantastic as always! 👍🏽
Another great vid,it reminds me when i was first married and before we had a family,we went to Naples and then we stayed in Ischia(an island in the bay of Naples)which is fantastic, lovely locals, lovely island but i find since then that i am very critical of pizza because you just cant beat pizza from that part of the world !!!!,look forward to your future vlogs, all the best.
You've nailed it again with the music Sir.
(And thanks for taking the time to do the music credits)
Loved joining you on this trip Freddie and Monica. Freddie's way of explaining everything and the enthusiasm is just captivating. Looking forward to see what your next two weeks has in store.
Man whoever is editing these videos is very skilled! The slick transition at 13:30 of the Fiat starting to the music playing was incredibly smooth and seamless! Keep up the great work!
living the dream, warm rain loving the video
Not surprised how many times you mentioned how bad the driving is out there. I experienced that when I visited Sicily a few years back.
Great to follow your trip Freddie. Take care and enjoy!
Love the video as always thank you
Amazing stuff,enjoy😊
Have fun guys
Your travels are very entertaining, thank you.
Another brilliant video guys so love your content

Joyous Souls. I can't fathom words elsewise or more for you two. Thank you for bringing us all along. Grazie.
Thank you DH🙂
Great episode , Italians do what they want on the road , it’s chaos but that is normal for Italy
Hope the car and the Bonneville are secure
Love how the channels going, Freddie and Monica you're doing great
Awesome video and awesome content can’t wait for the next video Thank’s Freddie and Monika

That was a good vlog.
Thanks for sharing for sharing your trip you guys. It's great quality content!
My wife's from Tunisia and it's a similar feel.
Cheers from Canada Freddie and Monika!!
Enjoy your stay in Italy! Amazing videos! Thanks Freddie. I bought this year a new Tricity 300 and I start enjoying riding a bike again after a long time. I”m thinking to ride it around Europe, camping and enjoying the views as well. Your journeys really inspires me… thank you!
Your living the dream Freddie please keep sharing really enjoy your honesty and Monica with her amazing camera skills and those pizza’s looked mouth watering good
Another great episode Freddy and Monica! The upstairs bathroom reminded me of the movie Elf😄.
Enjoy yourselves there I think you will....plus I think you fell on your feet with the apartment it's huge and gorgeous......look forward to seeing you in the next episode......
Another great video, with some lovely sites, great editing too Monika. I honestly don't know how to drive or ride the bike in Italy. I drove there once and never again, thanks for sharing your experiences.
So nice following you along on this trip😀 I was actually in Naples a few months back and would not have wanted to ride my motorbike there 😅. Amazing country, enjoy your time in Sicily!
The volcanos ( must be the Island hopping) are erupting again. This is absolutely glorious travel documenting , I'm so bloody hungry after seeing those pizzas. The " what rule" rules for driving would have me wearing adult diapers. Sicily is beautiful. Again never tired of your sojourns. Great wrap up and love the apartment.
Hello from rainy cold Ireland 🇮🇪 Great to see you back on the road freddie ! You're a travel vlogger , and a great one at that! You and Monica are a tonic on these cold evenings .
So glad you've embraced your Irish passport 😉 safe travels
Another fab video, thank you!
Thank you!🙂
The little largest island in the Mediterranean..yes I am appreciating your channel most enjoyable thank you so very much indeed bravo grazie Mille ciao ciao
Fantastico
Fred, Sicily is BIG ! I think you’ll be surprised. Have a great time 😎
I loved this content. Thank you very very much. Basically the trip cost £100 a day. 😊 Not bad for food fuel and hotel. 😊
And...holy crap...that apartment!!! HA!! It's gorgeous...and ... huge!!
I didn’t realise apartments were made this big!
Thank you Freddie and Monica, love your videos, so real and colourful...a fellow biker in Ipswich!
Thank you Kim. Please do wave if you see me in Ipswich!
wonderful
We have been to palermo this summer and it was beautiful. There are a lot of hidden gems but two places you should definitely visit are I Segreti del Chiostro inside Palermo and Cefalù, a smaller town in the east. Have a wonderful stay!
Freddie you make these long journeys look easy . The reality it's a long slog but if you enjoy driving I'm sure it's great. Would be nice to spend 2 months doing such adventures Ade
wow, your 500s done a few miles, great car
Don’t envy you driving in all that Italian traffic. But wow, what a lovely, big apartment! Enjoy Sicily. 🙂
Great video
I’ll give you credit man
I could never ride a motorcycle to Naples and drive to Sicily
You both have courage
Thank God🙏☝️ you both made it safe and blessed in your destination Sir Freddie. Enjoy your weekend. Ride safe and God bless to both of you🙏☝️
Thanks🙂
Hi , great riding through the traffic , to a pizza the size of a bed size table . Bon journo , usually means a payment for parking please , look out for Pinocchio , he will want a large coffee for security parking so nothing gets stolen . We only did that route once in in a 49 TON VOVO once , then changed to the east side of Italy , far less traffic ,although a little longer , down to catch the ferry to Malta , across into Sicily , load 50 tons of fruit , back in to Malta , back to Toranto , to load grapes for the UK . It is a magic place down the south , have fun and enjoy . Thanks for your video .😃
What an incredible trip that must’ve been!
We’re deciding what route to take back on the return trip, so very good to know the east is quieter🙂
I was a bit nervous of what may happen if I didn’t pay the security money… I didn’t pay in the end and luckily all good! Although everyone who turned up to park seemed to have a one minute negotiation with the man patrolling
I drove a 250cc bike in Taipeh, Taiwan, for a year. It was 30 years ago and total madness. Hundreds of scooters/bikes at every traffic light. You had to be first in line. Turning green it was a race to the next stop light etc...Accidents everywhere...
Great channel, great journey! I've driven from the UK to Malta, thankfully taking the ferry from Genoa to Sicily. Are you planning on popping over to Malta, lovely architecture, a mix of Italian, British and Arabic influences. Perhaps not as chaotic as driving in Italy though road signs tend to be treated as mere suggestions and you will likely come across cars and motorbikes from the 1970s in immaculate condition. Driving with familiarity on the left, I think both you and Monica would enjoy it. Definitely worth a visit having come so far!
